Pro Pundits - Lateriser

Are Gameweeks 4 and 7 the best time to play the first Wildcard in FPL?

The Gameweeks are coming in thick and fast and more often than not we forget to sit back and think macro.

Chelsea’s performance on Sunday was incredibly encouraging and with most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers having no Blues assets, a few might be thinking of a Wildcard during the first international break which follows Gameweek 3.

So, I thought it might be a good time to look at the merits of a Gameweek 4 versus a Gameweek 7 Wildcard.

The idea of this article is to help you think about the factors involved, that is all. Whether you Wildcard or not obviously depends on the state of your team and I leave that decision to you.

GAMEWEEK 4 WILDCARD

How much do we trust the Arsenal defence with the good fixtures from GW4? Thinking of ditching White, but am I jumping the gun? Any positives with them?

they haven't actually played a game with their first choice defence yet so maybe there is some hope

I have to get one of Veltman/White out this week. Thinking of holding White. Do you think he comes back for Norwich?

Arsenal are flat track bullies. Clear HOLD imo.

Not having Lukaku for the swing could hurt but having DCL, Antonio and Bamford for Leeds swing should be ok I feel... Really not keen on losing Salah or Bruno as there are plenty of options up front

There are also midfield options like Raphinha and Harrison(?) for example. Supposing many are keeping Salah, there is strong case to drop Bruno for Kaku for the fixture swing.

Look at those Chelsea fixtures again...

      SOU bre NOR new BUR

It might be one of the best 5 game stretches ever. 5 relegation candidates all back to back and Lukaku is the ultimate flat track bully. There is no way I'm not getting him by GW7 unless he's injured.

Fernandes in that same 5 game stretch has:
      EVE lei LIV tot MCY

The difference in fixture difficulty is enormous. You just gotta do it I think.

They don't have anyone like Lukaku really. He will play every game especially if he's in the hunt for golden boot.

Agree really. Fernandes will always find ways to punish no matter the opponent but that Chelsea run is amazing.

Without meaning to, I have a plan that'll get Lukaku for GW7 and it involves selling Bruno for the stretch Camzy has listed.

It's not like I can't cover that spot with a United (or other, better) attacker.

I actually think Lukaku is worth getting before GW7 but with Antonio/DCL performing, it's not AS urgent as it may otherwise be.

          Liverpool play City gw7.

My extremely early thought is to carry 2 fts into gw7... then salah out for lukaku gw7 and wildcard after to get salah back.....

I've seen Ben Crellin plan for that option. Very valid choice.

Salah has played City in the League 8 times. Scored 4 goals, got 1 assist. Can't rule out a return.

I'm personally PLANNING to use the WC, but should I have to then that's a fine plan sure.

Yup. I think I'll switch Bruno -> Lukaku in GW7, will just save 2 FTs so might even be able to avoid a WC.

Since his Liverpool debut, Salah has out scored every other premier league player, yes that includes Kane, Vardy, Sterling, Aubameyang etc. He is second to de Bruyne on assists. I’m staggered people still doubt him and call him greedy.

Since his debut in the 17/18 season:
    Salah 96 goals
    Kane 88 goals
    Vardy 77 goals
    Sterling 66 goals
    Aubameyang 64 goals
    Aguero 62 goals

    But apparently Salah is wasteful

I think he was on the bench only as a warning to Tuchel that he might start. Had he played 10 minutes it would have been a different story. Che will attack from their right side.

I started this week intending to sell him, but now likely won't this GW. Reasons being:

      - Delta still rising
      - Will at least hold value for a couple of GWs (by that, essentially mean less likely to fall to 3.9m)
      - Outside chance he gets an appearance vs. Pool or minutes off bench
      - International Break as Sadio says below.

I don't plan to start him in my squad, so no real dependency. Lucky enough to already have TAA/Shaw/Coufal (+ Duffy, since I sold White) - so not a priority.

I'm keeping, yeah. To be totally honest that's because I have more pressing concerns to deal with but even if I didn't I don't think it's a bad play to hold. Is it really worth using a transfer to bank the 0.1 profit instead of swapping an attacker in your starting lineup? I can easily hide Tsimikas on the bench until I WC and there's always the possibility that Robertson picks up an injury in which case you would be kicking yourself for selling.

Greenwood is there but since it is like this:

              Bruno
              Fernandes
              Red circle
              Greenwood (just at the bottom)

I think Bruno to pogba or Greenwood is viable as it might then allow an upgrade to Kane/lukaku. That spread could quite possibly get you more points. But getting rid of Salah and Bruno is sucicide given ownership and captain points.

Reckon Ings will rise this week. Ings > DCL planned transfer after the current game week but if DCL 8.2 and Ings stays at 8.0 then would need to transfer out White to a 4.0/4.1 rather than Tsimikas

he's 23 and they won't want to demolish Leno's sale value (imo) - I'm fairly confident

Cool, appreciate your thoughts. I'm not massively enamored with Sanchez and see him as a bit of cut price Ederson who will only get 6 points when they keep clean sheets, though far less frequently. But not much else out there at 4.5

Leno's contract looks like it expires next summer so unless they have some way of automatically forcing an extension his value is gonna be pretty low anyway now.

yeah I guess that's true, maybe they can convince him to sign a new one whilst he still starts - yeah the keepers are really hard to choose from, kinda think Guaita could be good

Don't care. It's Chelsea. And Pool don't look that watertight either.

Or starts Tsimikas vs. Leeds as Robbo has been busy in the Internationals.

Doubt it for the records, but stranger things...

    Start Tsimikas or Ayling?

Have both - playing Ayling (Leeds kept two clean sheets vs Burnley and seem a bit vulnerable down their left hand side where Ayling would be attacking)

      I'd personally start Ayling

Without kane, Son is playing up top and also take pens.

With kane its a different story...

Yeah, I’m looking at my team and trying to decide Son in a 352 or without and go 343.

I'm not sure actually. I've read conflicting things. I saw a stat preseason that had Son's stats without Kane being much more of a goalscoring threat. But there is a drop in creativity. I'm not sure.

At least Son will still be a MID next season 🙂

If Spurs get Traore then it is likely that Son will play alongside Kane

I have Tsimi, Veltman and White (boooooo). 2FTs. I'm confident that Robbo will start this week, and I want to keep White (logic, I got him in at the start for gw 4-7 anyway), so either:

    A) Tsimi to Livramento
    B) Veltman to a 4.5 (have to do this today as Veltman facing a price fall).

If B, Spurs defenders are most tempting for the next 2 gws, but who is most nailed? Otherwise Ayling the best option?

    1. Joyce1998

Dier is most nailed but A+B are good transfers

    B) raphinha

I’ve never been great at FPL, so I’m trying to play a bit differently this year.

More aggressive, lots of eye tests to justify decisions, try and be a first mover... etc.

Players I’m super interested in. Any others to add?

R.James - midfielder who gets 4 points for what will be a hell of a lot of clean sheets. Shaw is the same when he starts firing. TAA/James/Shaw back 3 could be golden.

Lukakau - straight bully and proven goal scorer in a team that could win the league.

Greenwood - best two footed finisher in the league? No brainer.

DCL - on pens, proven asset over past few seasons. Loads of crosses coming in for him.

Antonio/Benrahma combo - looks amazing right now.

    Salah/Fernandes/TAA - FPL royalty

Dont know bout the rest but best 2 foot finisher in the league is Son.

2 fts but not actually sure what to do, Wilson over Antonio was a real bad move to start the season but feel like I have to hold as Wilson is home to Saints

    Sanchez
    Taa Ayling Shaw
    Salah Bruno Raphinha Greenwood
    Ings Wilson Toney

    Tsi Tierney Brownhill 0 itb

    Any suggestions?

Cheers for the suggestions, problem with that is tierney to a 4 would leave me .2 short for Toney to Antonio and Shaw to 4 and Toney to DCL .1 short.
