Pro Pundits - Seb

How I plan to approach FPL Gameweek 4 and thoughts on the best time to Wildcard

Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The green arrows of outrageous transfers,
or to take Wildcards against a sea of reds,
and by comparing end them?

Like the Dane himself, we all have a decision to make.

Wildcards are flying, some planned and some as reactions to a tumultuous transfer window.

So, I thought I would take a moment to consider what my current plan is, how that might change and where I want to be in a few Gameweeks’ time in the hope that anyone suffering from similar dilemmas finds good company and perhaps even an alternative perspective.

It’s that or find the ghost of a king to talk to.

CURRENT TEAM

Let’s start with the current team. This is the XV that lined up for me in Gameweek 3:

Fundamentally, there is nothing wrong with this. I have one free transfer and £0.4m in the bank. This does not need Wildcarding for its own sake, but, as with many others, the question of can I Wildcard into an even more advantageous position exists.

Late signings such as Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), possible absentees such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m), Callum Wilson (£7.5m) and Raphinha (£6.5m), plus first team opportunities for the likes of Diogo Jota (£7.6m) due to the injured Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) are all relevant and pressing concerns.

As things stand, I am resisting. I am a firm believer that the goal of a Wildcard is to maximise the potential gain between the pre- and post-Wildcard squads, both in the short term and the long term. There is no denying there is an opportunity here, but I do not believe my current team is far behind enough for this to be the optimal moment. I do not consider Ronaldo essential enough to rip up a team for. In fact, I would find it difficult to drop one of the mid-priced forwards for him, such is the value on offer in that bracket currently. Famous last words.

This could change, however. Confirmation that Calvert-Lewin, Wilson and Raphinha, for example, are all out for the coming week could force my hand.

IDEAL GAMEWEEK 7 TEAM

Whatever happens this week, I do have a goal in mind. Whether it be by Wildcard or transfers, the below is how I would like to set myself up from Gameweek 7 based on current information.

Naturally, the Wildcard will get me closer to this (at least without extra transfers and the associated -4 point cost), but it is mostly possible with transfers too.

Some compromises may have to be made, such as forgoing the luxury of Josh Brownhill (£4.5m) to Moussa Sissoko (£4.5m) or even opting for Raul Jimenez (£7.4m) in place of one of Michail Antonio (£7.9m) or Calvert-Lewin, but that is acceptable.

Something of an inbetween would be to forgo the Gameweek 4 Wildcard in favour of arriving at my ideal team via a Gameweek 7 Wildcard instead, meaning that between now and then I need only focus on optimising the gains possible via transfers in Gameweeks 4, 5 and 6.

Whilst this was my original intention at the outset of the season, contemplating and writing this article has made me believe I can actually navigate this period without a Wildcard and thus hold it back in reserve for the future.

This is something that could prove a massive advantage when we see a second fixture shift in Gameweek 13 (notably, the conclusion of Chelsea’s favourable run and the beginning of one of the best runs in recent memory for Manchester United). Considering so many will have used their Wildcards by this point, the extra information we will have available and the potential future impacts of COVID developments, this is something that is very attractive to me.

THE WILDCARD

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6

As mentioned, there is however a scenario where I am flipped from an adamant no-Wildcarder into a fully paid-up member of the Gameweek 4 Wildcard crew. A few dominos need to fall for that to happen.

At least two of the following need to look likely:

  • Calvert-Lewin is not fit
  • Wilson is not fit
  • Raphinha is confirmed out
  • Firmino is confirmed out for 2+ weeks
  • New, as of yet unidentified, injuries

If, for example, only Wilson is an issue from the above, I will simply make the move to Jimenez. More than this however would tip the balance of most optimal route in favour of a Gameweek 4 Wildcard for me. This would then present the opportunity to maximise the fixtures between now and Gameweek 7 ahead of arriving at (a slightly modified) ideal team.

The big one here, especially with a Wildcard, is Ronaldo v Lukaku. Their strengths and weaknesses have been discussed plenty over the past few days, so rather than repeat that I want to build on the great work of others and look at a couple of FPL-relevant projections.

Seems like a precaution, probably nothing. Although since I don't plan to bring Lukaku in then it makes my Ronaldo plans a little bit stronger for GW4.

Re-posted as just missed end of last article!

    Current line up:
    Sanchez
    Shaw Coufal TAA Livramento
    Salah Bruno Raphina
    DCL Ings Antonio

Already decided I want Ronnie in for Bruno but who best to replace midfield:

    A. Traore
    B. Sarr
    C. another suggestion welcome.

Will have up to £7.9m to spend on the above but want to retain some funds.

I have him and now dillemma is to pick two of Traore, Sarr and Raphinha.

I stick to Sarr and Raphinha right now. But I cover the Wolves with Jimenez

Son owners how are you feeling about him and would you consider selling for cr7 funds and would you keep on a wc ?

He’s done well so far but us spuds have really struggled to break down defensive teams like palace and they tend not to be the best for son, then it’s Chelsea and arsenal which could be ok

I found it very hard to drop him to afford Ronaldo, but felt it was necessary. Spurs aren't exactly playing breathtaking football and I'm sure they will have a few big results over the course of the season with the players they have, but there are good options around the 6-7.5 bracket that can do pretty well as replacements as well as enabling another premium like Ronaldo.

Yes, I'm selling soon (probably this week) and would not keep if I were on a WC. He was in my GW1 team because everyone was saying Kane was more likely than not to leave, but then he didn't.

My biggest conundrum. I've had him since GW1, and scored well, but Spurs not exactly scoring big each week.
Think I want him for the Palace game, but may need to shift him to create funds to allow Ronaldo/Lukaku, who are more likely to get double figures each week.

Nice article Seb. I appreciate the detailed analysis, but I have to disagree that "the difference between a midfielder and forward here can be ignored for our purposes, with the extra point for a midfielder goal generally being cancelled out by the extra bonus point score for a forward goal."

    Compare Kane's 242 points from 23 G, 14 A to midfielder numbers:

    Son: 17 G, 11 A, 228 points (only 14 fewer points with 6 G, 3 A fewer)
    Bruno: 18 G, 14 A, 244 points (more with 5 fewer G, same A)
    Salah in 18-19: 22 G, 12 A, 259 points (17 more points with fewer G and A)

The bonus for forward goals does not fully compensate for the benefits that midfielders get.

Cheers! Yes that is fair. My brief assessment here was based on the work done looing into Rashford/Martial and Aubameyang at the beginning of last season, where it was shown the position change made no/a small difference due to the mentioned factors.
Definitely scope for this to be a poor assumption based on only those examples, but I think it's close enough for our purposes here with this projection. Although, a more detailed looked will certainly be beneficial.

        Well done Seb.
Also interesting on the above players they roughly average one bonus point per attacking return. Slightly less for Salah who doesn’t quite attract bonuses at the same rate

Last year i've signed up to a yearly FFScout membership, for which i've made a single payment. I was never made aware that this was a rolling contract, which if it was something I knew it would happen, I definitely wouldn’t sign up.

I’ve signed up under the promise that you would have a new members area (which never happened!) and Fábio Borges as a pro pundit (he rarely made any articles), so the quality of the features on offer were really poor and I could access them for free on Twitter, Reddit, etc.

My new membership started on the 2nd of September 2021 without my consent (you choose to ignore the 14-day cooling-off period). I've already exchanged a few emails with Ted in the last few days and my arguments fell into daft ears.

Going through the Resolver website, they've stated the following about this similar issue:

    "
    Automatic renewals
A lot of contracts for digital services have automatic renewals built into them. Generally speaking, you should always check the terms and conditions when you sign up! Anyone providing one of these services should set out when and why your contract will renew in either the T&Cs or in your contract. If you didn’t realise that your contract was supposed to automatically renew, your best bet is to get in contact with the company. Explain the situation and ask if they can do anything about it. If your contract or the T&Cs set out the terms of renewal, you’ll be relying on goodwill to get the charges revoked.
    "

I had a similar issue with Fantasy Football Hub in the past and they've shown a lot of goodwill, cancelled my membership and sent my refund. Because they were so friendly and helpful, a few months later i've committed to the FFHub membership. It seems that FFScout is operating a money grabbers policy, where they don't care about their users unless they're filling their pockets.

I've already raised a dispute with PayPal about this transaction and i hope to hear from them in the near future. I hope that Fantasy Football Scout reviews their position and refund my annual membership.

    Best Regards, Andre

out of interest why do you not release new things more often as you build them? There's obviously a lot of work gone into the new members area but why did you release nothing for a year then loads of stuff at once, instead of maybe like one new feature every month or so?

          Hello,

I'm back after being banned from the website for 24 hours (hello free speech!):

Apparently this was your reply but i can't find the comment elsewhere:

          "
Unfortunately I have to take issue with virtually everything that's said here. The fact that we're allowing you to have your say in our own comments (and also on Instagram, Twitter, etc) I believe underlines that we are an incredibly open and tolerant community. We have also responded to you several times in emails and explained our position, but what you're actually saying here is that you don't like our decision and you aren't getting what you want so you're going to make a huge fuss. The incredible irony that you are supposedly appealing to our 'goodwill' whilst doing this 1. It was very clear it was a rolling agreement - we outlined we were doing this in advance before we made the change well over a year ago. It is listed on the registration page clearly, also when you put your details into Stripe/Paypal.
          "

When i was promised a new members area back in 2020 as an incentive to sign-up to FFScout as a premium member, i don't recall myself asking for a refund or even FFScout offering a discount or some of the membership fee back as the promise wasn't kept. At least it would be an act of goodwill.

I believe that any organisation should be oriented for customer satisfaction, and on this case it seems that FFScout clearly don't have their customers interests as a priority.

I've clearly shown my intention to not be a paid member for the next year, but you've clearly ignored my wishes as long my money is in your pockets the FFScout is a happy family!

FFScout has clearly not shown good faith in resolving this situation as has even blocked me from the Forum section. I don't think this is a way of having an open and direct conversation about the subject.

I was not made aware that this was a rolling membership, as i haven't seen it anywhere. I should have received an email reminder that my membership was coming to an end / renewal, but this hasn't happened.

I hope you can refund my membership as i clearly have no interest in using your services in the near future (even more after the unpleasant exchange of emails and arguments that we had in the past few days).

          Best Regards,
          Andre

I posted this on a previous article, a few bits about last season.

      "
With Chilwell dropping to a very tempting 5.7 this morning, here are a few little tidbits for those considering him regarding his stats from last season:

      - started more games than any other player excepting Mendy, Werner and Mount
      - effectively started 2 out of every 3 games (with Alonso starting the other 1)
      - started only 11 out of 19 since Tuchel took charge (but bare in mind he started both CL semis and the final, and the FA Cup semi)
      - Only Werner and Mount had more goal involvements than Chilwell (8)
      - Along with Silva and Rudiger, he started every game he appeared in so no sub appearances
      - outperformed expected assists (5 assists to 2.8 xA) and expected goals (3 goals to 2.4 xG)"

Overall if he can get a good run of games going there's great upside but I think the likes of James is a much safer pick.

    I'm thinking B

Depends on how much you would change but I think I would just take the -8. It's a long season and you will want the WC later

What do you think about Gray, is he worth the 1.0 more than Allen? I could use the funds to get TAA back in but have the goals been good ones or flukes, is he playing out of position or just benefiting from injuries?

If you need someone to play, Gray is better.

Allen is just bottom priced bench fodder. Gray is picked to be in your 11, in same vein as someone like ESR

Gray is definitely worth more. He's looked very lively and direct and if the strategy continues as pacy wingers targeting DCL he should get good assist potential as well as his own goal (the last one was pretty good).

Allen is a sitting midfielder, I don't expect he'll get too many chances, Doucoure could be an option.

i suspect that Gray will be one of those bandwagons who gets a couple of goals, everyone gets, and he does nothing else.

      pretty low risk though.

      I think he is.

Everton fans have been praising and he's playing his natural position out wide. Allan has the defensive duties (Doucoure probably has more license to get forward).

Competition is Iwobi. So very little.

      Personally think he's great value.

      A lot of typing to say;

Reg Semedo Mount v Chill Shaw Sarr

If you're going to hold them all for a period I think the former.

    Advice greatly appreciated!

    A) 3-4-3 - DCL, Jota, Greenwood, ESR (Ayling, Sissoko, Livramento)
    B) 3-4-3 - DCL, Jota, Greenwood, Sarr (Allan, Duffy, Livramento)
    C) 4-3-3 - Lukaku, Raphinha, Sarr, Ayling (Sissoko, Allan, Livramento)

    Sarr or Traore?
    ESR or Gray?
    Duffy or Williams?

    Cheers..

Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne are set to return to training for #ManCity and could make the substitutes bench for Saturday’s trip to Leicester.

    [via @StuBrennanMEN]

    - Torres nowhere near nailed, maybe for Leicester and Southampton. After that, doubt it.

‘Time to wildcard’ for you maybe. No right or wrong time to use it. Just quite a few are wildcarding him in now, many with an expectation he’ll start up front every game.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t start against Leicester tbh. Spain play again this week and the Pep Roulette. Same thing happened with Mahrez and then was benched the last two.

2fts, 0.6itb, and still unsure how to approach Lukaku / Ronaldo!
Don't really want to knee-jerk Bruno out until we know Ron is starting.
And if Lukaku is fit, obv want him from GW7 but Villa without Martinez could be a bloodbath.

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Digne White
    Raph Salah Bruno Son
    Toney Antonio

    Livra Gilmour Scarlett

    1. Son & Toney -> Ronaldo & Allan (start Livra in 532)
    2. Son & Toney -> Lukaku & Doucoure
    3. Bruno & Toney -> Ronaldo & 6.5
    4. Bruno & Scarlett > Ronaldo & Allan
    5. Bruno, Son, Scarlett/Toney -> Ronaldo, Jota, 4.5/7m
    6. Burn a FT and reassess next week

Ugh, maybe some tried to play different and made a mess of their team (I did this last year and used it GW2 which went well actually).. Or maybe some are playing aggressive to get as far ahead as possible, nice and early.

Where’s the fun in playing the same as everyone else? There’s this talk of Wildcarding GW7/8, as if you’ll win FPL by wildcarding then when really, it’s just a fixture swing for Chelsea and West Ham.

You don't get it, that people have wildcarded during the first international break?

Have you ever played this game before?

      1. Dr. Rog
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

I wildcarded because I was 5 pints down and too close to my computer. Thats a good enough reason as any in my book.

Now I have to justify that, which is no easy task. The best I can manage at the moment is thats an ideal time to catch all the dirt cheap bench players at their minimums (Williams, Livra, Sissy/Happy) and bring in a few Wol/Ars players in advance of their kind fixture runs.

But to be honest if you can stay off the source GW7/8 is the time to play it.

Perfectly viable to play it after a transfer happens that potentially makes Bruno (the second most popular premium in the game) no longer as effective.

          Decent fixture switches...

This GW7 WC, comes down to getting 3 Chelsea, and that's not that hard to plan if you've WC'd this week and have Ronaldo.

    6. Hiiler
      • 2 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

Not all teams are set for 5 GW's. I'm one of the lucky ones who can bring in Ronaldo with 2 FT's. So no wild carding for me. We will see how it goes. But wild cards are there if you need them, so there is no right or wrong place to use them.

Last season I think the best time was right at the end of the year, where there were double game weeks empty GW's and so on back to back. .

    Latest tinker

    Batman
    TAA Shaw Tierney
    Salah Jota Torres Traore
    CR7 DCL Antonio
    Bench: Foster Livra William Sissy

with the plan to bring in Raph Torres as he is probably only good for the next 2 anyway. and the standard plan of working of in James, Mount & Lukaku thereafter.

Key variant: Jimmy+Raph over DCL+Traore, which tbf is always an option for a -4, but Im an xG believer and the latter two are bossing for the time being.
