How I plan to approach FPL Gameweek 4 and thoughts on the best time to Wildcard

Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The green arrows of outrageous transfers,
or to take Wildcards against a sea of reds,
and by comparing end them?

Like the Dane himself, we all have a decision to make.

Wildcards are flying, some planned and some as reactions to a tumultuous transfer window.

So, I thought I would take a moment to consider what my current plan is, how that might change and where I want to be in a few Gameweeks’ time in the hope that anyone suffering from similar dilemmas finds good company and perhaps even an alternative perspective.

It’s that or find the ghost of a king to talk to.

CURRENT TEAM

Let’s start with the current team. This is the XV that lined up for me in Gameweek 3:

Fundamentally, there is nothing wrong with this. I have one free transfer and £0.4m in the bank. This does not need Wildcarding for its own sake, but, as with many others, the question of can I Wildcard into an even more advantageous position exists.

Late signings such as Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), possible absentees such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m), Callum Wilson (£7.5m) and Raphinha (£6.5m), plus first team opportunities for the likes of Diogo Jota (£7.6m) due to the injured Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) are all relevant and pressing concerns.

As things stand, I am resisting. I am a firm believer that the goal of a Wildcard is to maximise the potential gain between the pre- and post-Wildcard squads, both in the short term and the long term. There is no denying there is an opportunity here, but I do not believe my current team is far behind enough for this to be the optimal moment. I do not consider Ronaldo essential enough to rip up a team for. In fact, I would find it difficult to drop one of the mid-priced forwards for him, such is the value on offer in that bracket currently. Famous last words.

This could change, however. Confirmation that Calvert-Lewin, Wilson and Raphinha, for example, are all out for the coming week could force my hand.

IDEAL GAMEWEEK 7 TEAM

Whatever happens this week, I do have a goal in mind. Whether it be by Wildcard or transfers, the below is how I would like to set myself up from Gameweek 7 based on current information.

Naturally, the Wildcard will get me closer to this (at least without extra transfers and the associated -4 point cost), but it is mostly possible with transfers too.

Some compromises may have to be made, such as forgoing the luxury of Josh Brownhill (£4.5m) to Moussa Sissoko (£4.5m) or even opting for Raul Jimenez (£7.4m) in place of one of Michail Antonio (£7.9m) or Calvert-Lewin, but that is acceptable.

Something of an inbetween would be to forgo the Gameweek 4 Wildcard in favour of arriving at my ideal team via a Gameweek 7 Wildcard instead, meaning that between now and then I need only focus on optimising the gains possible via transfers in Gameweeks 4, 5 and 6.

Whilst this was my original intention at the outset of the season, contemplating and writing this article has made me believe I can actually navigate this period without a Wildcard and thus hold it back in reserve for the future.

This is something that could prove a massive advantage when we see a second fixture shift in Gameweek 13 (notably, the conclusion of Chelsea’s favourable run and the beginning of one of the best runs in recent memory for Manchester United). Considering so many will have used their Wildcards by this point, the extra information we will have available and the potential future impacts of COVID developments, this is something that is very attractive to me.

THE WILDCARD

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6

As mentioned, there is however a scenario where I am flipped from an adamant no-Wildcarder into a fully paid-up member of the Gameweek 4 Wildcard crew. A few dominos need to fall for that to happen.

At least two of the following need to look likely:

  • Calvert-Lewin is not fit
  • Wilson is not fit
  • Raphinha is confirmed out
  • Firmino is confirmed out for 2+ weeks
  • New, as of yet unidentified, injuries

If, for example, only Wilson is an issue from the above, I will simply make the move to Jimenez. More than this however would tip the balance of most optimal route in favour of a Gameweek 4 Wildcard for me. This would then present the opportunity to maximise the fixtures between now and Gameweek 7 ahead of arriving at (a slightly modified) ideal team.

The big one here, especially with a Wildcard, is Ronaldo v Lukaku. Their strengths and weaknesses have been discussed plenty over the past few days, so rather than repeat that I want to build on the great work of others and look at a couple of FPL-relevant projections.

B if you have Ronaldo/Bruno. C if Firmino is fit. Or else A.

Tough, as we don't know how United will line up now.

      B or C.

Probably Jota for me, as he is more likely to start on the bench with Firmino fit.

          Listed here at 75%.
With such a decent replacement available, I'd say Firmino starts on the bench.

KDB and Foden are back in training this week and potentially in line to feature this weekend, for those on WC with Torres (he's a good pick btw), i just wonder if you feel adding two more attackers into the squad will impact Torres mins at all?

thats sort of my point, is the risk with KDB and Foden back still worth the reward. For my the scales and shifted and i wouldnt get Torres on WC

Jesus and Torres have been City's best attacking players.

Without clarity on the Brazil situation, Raph is the least enticing. That said, if we knew all were available from here on, GW is the one with the most question marks I suppose.

    Ings and Barnes to:

    a) Move both, for a hit, to Antonio and Jota. Other suggestions welcome.
    b) Just move Barnes, no hit.
    c) Just move Ings, no hit.

Also got Vardy as a placeholder for Lukaku.

i think Jota is the best option if Firmino out. With Torries i saw KDB and Foden are back in training so wondering how they will impact Torres mins.
I also dont hate shopping around the Raphina and Troare price and saving the money for a future move

I think it depends somewhat on priorities.

For example, Ings is part of my makeweight to get Ronaldo (with Bruno to Jota) and I think whoever replaces Barnes for me, can wait one week.

Is the "combined" uncertainty of starts for Jota-Torres-Greenwood triplet too much risk? Contemplating 3-5-2 on WC.

    TAA - Shaw - Tierney
    Jota - Salah - Greenwood - Torres - Gray
    CR7 - Antonio

I'm looking at keeping him. If I use my 2FTs to swap Bruno to Ronaldo, I don't want to take a hit to remove him for DCL. Had a look at his record vs the bigger teams and he has the potential to return.

Part of the reason we use underlying stats and look at fixture difficulty is so we're able to base our assessment of a team's future prospects off more than limited results in unfavourable fixtures. It's why we're also not rushing to buy Spurs assets despite them being top of the table.

That is why you have Lloris, top of the points table.

Spurs defence would have conceded loads of goals if it was not forLloris and is the reason why Lloris is far ahead of any GK in the game.

Why is that? The stats don't look great (ok I get that it's only 3 games in)

      3rd for most shots conceded
4th for most shots conceded inside the box
      1st for lost tackles

Man City we can forgive but their other games were against Wolves and Watford. It doesn't read well. Looking at the stats they have been over performing. Its unlikely that can continue, but who really knows.

I have and that's why I strongly prefer the eye test to going blindly with stats. Spurs have been lucky to win three games and concede nil; Wolves have been unlucky to lose 3 games and concede three. Going forward, I'd have far more confidence in Wolves defenders/keeper than those from Spurs.

There are two reasons I personally wouldn't go down this route:

      1. You are locked out of quite a few nailed, penalty taking mid priced forwards.
      2. If one of the premium midfielders really starts banging that's two transfers to get them in.

anyone on wildcard tempted to pick de gea? Started the season alright and its his place to loose atm. The run of fixtures is not that scary from a defensive point of view either since United kept most of their clean sheets in the tougher fixtures last season, and I suspect a CS against a tougher team might mean save points and potantial bonus as well for De Gea.

some uncertainties and certainly a risky pick, but I think he could be a really good pick at that price. With varane in and as the defense settles United could potentially be one of the teams with the most clean sheets this season.

for me, its the shaw factor, i would want shaw in my team so then the question goes to do i want a double up? currently i dont, i'd perfer to focus on getting a wolves, city or chels defender and spread the risk a bit.

I understand that, but a lot of people will do shaw->james in GW 7, so then you would only have a double for the next 3 GWs, which is not the end of the world...

    5. TheTinman
      • 8 Years

His place to lose, yes, but that just fills me with dread. It's 2-4 bad performances = 1pts per week then he's out and you need to use a transfer. When you could have had about 6 other keepers who are nailed on even if they have a bad run and they'll probably outscore him anyway

      1. TheTinman
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

He also has a recent history of consistent balls ups.

      2. Deeney-is-a-god
        • 7 Years

thats the thing though, I believe there is a decent chance he will be nailed on throughout the season and in which case I do not see anyone in that price bracket outscoring him. I know there is a risk, but I am not overly keen on any of the other keepers in that price bracket.

    6. Emiliano Sala
      • 7 Years

I really want him but henderson is close to a return. tough CL matches may end to a rotation ?

      1. Deeney-is-a-god
        • 7 Years

maybe, but I think United want to challenge for the league this season and rotating keepers is not really good for anyone. I think Solskjaer wants to have a nailed on keeper he can trust. Then again that is just a guess and if I pick De Gea I can only blame myself if he is benched.

I'd say Hendo could return any time. I hope it's later rather than sooner as I'm getting a/the United keeper when their fixtures turn GW15 and I'd be very pleased if it's Hendo at a large discount.

I cannot see how after the Brazil/Argentina being suspended, and Brazil demanding that English players should be quarantined for 14 days (which is just a ploy to win the game by default as they started the game), that the 5-day penalty by FIFA for clubs not allowing their players to go can't stand?

If it is indeed a rule that Brazil can quarantine UK nationals for 14 days, (then a 10-day quarantine at Croatia for 10 days totaling 24 days), then a 5-day penalty being imposed by FIFA has to become null and void surely? The clubs were just doing what common sense, in COVID times, and FIFA just now looks plain foolish.

I believe there is a real misconception about Adama Traore.

Just listened to PlanetFPL's pod from Sunday and also a few other pods/threads. Most of them dismiss Traore rather quickly as being someone who 'always has good stats' but is a 'terrible finisher'.

This is not entirely true. He was played PoO very often in the past few seasons mainly at RWB. His expected goals and assists have been very low from the past few seasons. He averaged 1.2 shots/90 the entirety of last season. He was playing very wide and deep, and the only stat that Traore was actually outstanding in is completed dribbles - which he's still top of. His actual FPL related stats last season were NOT good.

However, this season from those first 3 games, he's been deployed on the left as an inside forward as part of the front 3. His shots/90 have gone all the way up to 4.0. His xG from 0.1/90 > 0.5/90. I could go on. Yes, he has 0g 0a so far. Yes, he's not going to convert chances like Son. However, he also has not underperformed his xG by more than 0.5g in 3 full seasons.

Point is, his stats from three very difficult opening games vs lei TOT MUN are extremely strong and a big difference compared to last year. His role has been noticeably changed by Lage since he came in for Nuno. If he continues to put up these stats deployed in this position, I firmly believe he will be worth the 6m mid slot.

Here's a Sky report that highlights his new role under Lage and what it could mean going forward:
      https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12382109/adama-traores-change-of-role-under-bruno-lage-could-define-wolves-season-and-the-spain-internationals-career

If I was on WC, I would really consider Traore as a cheap but potent differential. I'm also eyeing him as a potential Benrahma replacement if Benny faces competition from Vlasic and his starting spot comes under threat.

I think Vlasic will be eased in over the European games as a starter and could replace one of Bowen, Benny, or Fornals when he is up to speed.

Same applies to Areola who i think will replace Fabs soon as he has been poor

He's one of those players that gets a label and then everyone notices every time he messes up.

Unlike a lot of other Spurs fans, I really wanted us to sign him. Would have been interesting to see him playing with Kane and Son.

Yep. There are lots of players that once they get a certain label, no matter what, they can never shake it off.

'Kyle Walker always has a mistake in him.'
'Traore has no composure and can't finish.'
'Lukaku is a flat track bully and can't score against the big teams.'

          And sometimes falsely positive ones:
'Thiago is world class and would improve any midfield.'
'Torres is in such great form he can't be dropped. He's the only natural CF at City.'

Also, going back, the first few players I can think of who have been labelled negatively include Titus Bramble, Emile Heskey, Marcel Desailly .. I wonder what they all have in common.

I'm more than willing to change my mind, but so far this season, despite the quality of opposition, he's been presented with multiple open goal opportunities and blown them all. Start by putting a couple away, and he'll be my Benrahma replacement. Right now, my eyes are on Mount.

        Excellent stuff.

On the aspect of Wolves having had tough opening fixtures, sure, that's true. But they may also turn out to have suited Traoré, they were teams that attacked Wolves, which left them more open to fast counters in which Traoré's pace was a big weapon. With the next set of opponents, Wolves are facing more teams that will play conservatively and leave less space behind. So Traoré's numbers from GW1-3 may actually turn out to be be a bit higher than will be the case longer-term.

On Benrahma, I think the time has already come. He has been lucky to do so well in FPL terms so far (and I say that having had him since GW1) and he only got one game as #10 before being shifted wide, Fornals has been #10 in the last two. Vlasic is a specialist #10 really and will likely make that spot his own in due course.

But the bigger picture is that the Irons have Europa League this season and it is about to kick in. Last season we were used to a stable and predictable Hammers team, with early exits in both cups meaning the PL was the only game in town for them. This season will be different and there will be rotation, especially in those three attacking midfield positions one would think. In my eyes Benrahma ➡ ? is only a matter of timing it and if I were wildcarding this week he'd be gone.

It's a fair point. Leicester and United dominated the ball and Wolves' next few opponents are unlikely to do that.

However, the Spurs game is the one that's interesting. Wolves had 58% possession and bossed the game. Traore put up his best numbers of the season against them.

4 shots, 3 in the box and an xGI of 0.90. He has 2.12 xGI after 3 games. So a large majority of the xGI he accrued was against the 'defensive' team not the offensive ones on the break.

I've limited myself to Traore and Sarr as Barnes replacements

Sarr (6.0) - overall good fixtures next 3GWs: WOL, Nor, NEW - WOL ofc the toughest one, however, can see a nice potential for counterattacks. The only noticeable of WAT was during the first GW - over 1.3. Sarr with overall xG: 0.43 and xA: 0.62.
The numbers should be better with the incoming fixtures. Definitely Sarr is their main man, just ofc we can't be sure that WAT will be performing better(?)

Traore (6.0). - imo the best fixtures next 3GWs: Wat, BRE, Sou. Wolves with good xG of over 1.3 each of their games so far - how it ended is another story. Traore with xG:1.5 and xA: 0.61.
He passed the eyet-test. Said that, we can't be sure that they will start scoring, however, they look really good as a team.

Can’t really decide between Traore and Sarr, thinking Sarr will have slightly better fixtures, however, although we saw Wolves playing good football,I can’t be sure how Watford will perform. Surely if they score any, it should go through Sarr but…

7 goals, 17 assists across 6 seasons and 8,125 minutes. Thats one attacking return in 338.54 minutes.
What makes anyone think Traore is gonna be any different this season? Its always the same with Traore and yet people still fall for the same trap, yes he can run, but he cant score and rarely assists.

Even if he hits a tiny purple patch now, and god forbid he gets two attacking returns on the trot, how long do you think that will last?

If you pick Traore, you deserve no sympathy when it all goes wrong

He’s not actually being picked for the season though - it’s mostly for the next 5 or so

He’s never going to win any ballon d’ors but if he hits a bit of form to go with the fixtures and starts turning the XGi into actual Gi then he’s grand for a few GW’s

I guess I can see the tempation for five weeks given their fixtures, and yes he could get some points. Just most people getting Traore is on WC, and Traore is dictating their squad structure to some extent, not many 6mil mids to move to other than Sarr.
When people eventually do drop him, its gonna be for a -4 or 2 FTs

Yeah 6m midfielder isn’t exactly stacked like the 8.0 striker shelf… but the cupboard isn’t totally bare either

In addition to Traore you have Sarr who’s probably on pens now with Deeney gone, ESR who has green fixtures for what looks like the rest of year, Gray who seems to have hit the ground running, and even Mr 150 points himself, FPL favourite Tomas Soucek if all else fails

Plus if he’s being picked it’s likely to accomodate Salah, CR7, Kaku so it gives the team a certain va-va-voom

Won’t be for everyone mind you, but I can totally see the case for

ohhh forgot about Soucek, yes he is a pick and a half and will outlast Ben (Soucek is season keeper material imo, excluding terrible fixture patches).
Sarr isnt bad, dont like any other option tho really.

I am thinking Jimi, people probably can pick holes with that, but I always liked Jimi, honest work.

You clearly do not watch him or did not read the hot topic. They basically stated a whole change in position and style but it doesn't matter because when he was a rwb or rw he had so and so stats (which the stats have drastically changed this season based on the changes)

I read the entire hot post, at first I read only the start but then I was like ok, I will read it all, plus I do watch him play.
He can probably get some points in the coming weeks sure, I just prefer set my team up with the long run in mind.
He isnt for me, but I hope he does well for owners and proves me wrong.

I perfectly understand preferences. I don't have him, I still have my doubts too but basing his criticism on goals output when his role has been clearly changed to a more goal suited role is unfair.

It's not really the case to claim he's suddenly playing a different position, surely? Played as a forward loads of times under Nuno, was definitely not purely a wing-back.
Whatever else might be true and worthwhile in this assessment (which may well be plenty), I can't buy the idea he's been punted up front apropos of nothing. He's always been an attacker, albeit one - granted - used as a wing-back by Nuno plenty of times.

Had a sudden rush of blood and hit the WC button despite having a good start and being reasonably happy with my team. No turning back now and Ronny is up front.

My final dilemma is to go for Lukaku as well (also have Salah) but it would mean TAA drops to a £4.5. Is going without him madness or a risk worth taking?

      ie:
      A TAA & Calvert-Lewin
      B £4.5m & Lukaku

I know Luk's fixtures aren't great apart from Villa but an early WC means inevitable panic otherwise, in 3 weeks.

      Thoughts appreciated!

It's a simple calculation, does Lukaku outperform DCL by more points than TAA outscores a 4.5?

The answer is no, and balance is the winner, yet again.

it's a risk with taa for sure but no risk no reward...change the 4.5 based on matchups every few weeks and should be good to go..dcl might be consistent scorer but is he likely to haul? i think being on penalties does help him this year for sure..on the other side some might prefer having lukaku who might be good for a hattrick or two this year

I'd go with Traore based on the underlying stats and long run of good fixtures.

The question mark for me is whether those underlying stats will hold against teams they'll have less opportunity to counter attack. But for 6m you're not getting perfect picks.

On a WC just go for Traore … you need a punt on a WC and at 6m with those fixtures and the potential and threat bubbling, will add some excitement to your wildcard.
