The best FPL midfielders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

Having already assessed the best goalkeepers and defenders on offer, our position-by-position analysis of the stand-out Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard continues as we take a look at the midfielders.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

BEST PREMIUM MIDFIELDERS

Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1 2

Having already combined two goals and two assists this season, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the standout premium midfielder on offer.

The Egyptians 13 goal attempts ranks top amongst all midfielders, while he has also supplied three big chances for his team-mates. His immediate fixtures suggest that he can be a key captaincy pick, too:

While the fixtures are good, they perhaps don’t have enough appeal to warrant a Liverpool double-up, which in all likelihood rules Sadio Mane (£11.9m) out, though it is worth noting that he sits joint-top with Salah for shots in the box this season, with 11.

Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) remains one of the most popular FPL picks, though it is harder to make a case for him following back-to-back blanks, plus the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m).

Last season, Fernandes was Manchester United’s talisman, finishing with an excellent 244 FPL points. However, with Ronaldo now in the team, it may well reduce his Fantasy appeal, especially if he were to take on penalty-taking duties.

Also consider…

Son Heung-min (£10.1m) has produced two double-digit hauls already this season, via two goals and four bonus points, though it is worth noting that Tottenham Hotspur’s fixtures do take a turn for the worse following Gameweek 4.

And unfortunately, it’s a bit too early to consider Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m), despite a possible return to the Manchester City bench at Leicester City in Gameweek 4.

BEST MID-PRICE MIDFIELDERS

From Gameweeks 5 to 10, Leeds United sit top of our season ticker for ease of fixture, which promotes Raphinha (£6.5m) in our thinking.

The Brazilian has already delivered a goal at home to Everton in Gameweek 2, with set-pieces giving him the edge over team-mate Jack Harrison (£5.9m). There has also been talk of a possible no. 10 role in light of Daniel James’ (£6.0m) arrival, which is something to monitor moving forward.

However, at the time of writing, there is uncertainty surrounding his availability in Gameweek 4, with possible FIFA sanctions hanging over several Brazilian Premier League players.

Diogo Jota (£7.6m) is likely to earn significant interest if Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) is sidelined with a hamstring injury. The Brazilian limped off shortly before half-time during the 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea in Gameweek 3, and was expected to undergo further tests.

We’re still awaiting an update on that, but if he were to miss a spell, Jota could well become one of the very best midfield options in the game, given his impressive per 90 minutes stats in 2020/21.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ fixtures are about as good as it gets between Gameweeks 4 and 9.

Despite losing three in a row, Bruno Lage’s side have faced three tough opponents in Leicester City, Spurs and Man Utd, and for those eying up their assets, the underlying numbers do point to a change of fortunes.

In his new left-wing role, Adama Traore (£6.0m) has attempted 12 shots and created nine chances for his team-mates so far. How his performances stack up against weaker opposition who will naturally sit a bit deeper remains to be seen, but his goal threat numbers are encouraging.

Francisco Trincao (£5.9m) also deserves a mention, though the fact he was hooked after 69 minutes in Gameweek 3 is a slight concern, especially with Daniel Podence (£5.5m) lurking.

Adama Traore (left) v Francisco Trincao (right) goal threat statistics 2021/22

Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) is more appealing than team-mate Paul Pogba (£7.7m) right now, given the Frenchman’s deeper role at Molineux in Gameweek 3, though his position in the starting XI isn’t 100% clear following the arrival of Ronaldo.

Also consider…

Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) has produced eight shots and created eight chances so far, with a particularly appealing set of fixtures coming up – Wolves (h), Norwich City (a) and Newcastle United (h).

However, if you are focusing on longer-term picks, Mason Mount (£7.5m) is a solid investment given Chelsea’s fixture swing in Gameweek 7. The Blues midfielder has claimed two assists in the first three Gameweeks, and should benefit from Romelu Lukaku’s (£11.5m) excellent hold-up play in the final-third.

Like Salah, Said Benrahma (£6.4m) has combined two goals with two assists so far, though his underlying numbers (see below) do suggest that he might struggle to continue delivering at his current rate in the coming weeks.

Midfielders ranked by expected goal involvement (xGI) delta 2021/22

Finally, we should also touch on Man City’s midfielders, with the usual rotation risk caveats.

Ferran Torres (£7.1m) has thrived up front for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, returning 18 FPL points in Gameweek 3 alone. For some, a run of out-of-position starts for the champions is tempting, but with De Bruyne and Phil Foden (£7.9m) back in training, how many minutes he can get beyond Gameweek 4 is still a bit of an unknown.

BEST BUDGET MIDFIELDERS

Calvert-Lewin on Everton penalties - but Ings stays second in line at Villa 3

Demarai Gray (£5.6m) has impressed for Everton in his three league games for the club, scoring his first Toffees’ goal against Leeds United and following it up by giving Rafa Benitez’s side the lead at Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 3. Now the challenge for the winger is to perform consistently week-in, week-out, something he was often criticised for not doing while at Leicester City.

Emile Smile Rowe (£5.4m) is an alternative option, if you believe Arsenal can kick-on with several key players returning of course.

From the bargain options, Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) has been taking set-pieces at Norwich City, while Moussa Sissoko (£4.5m), Allan (£4.5m), Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) and James McArthur (£4.5m) should at least offer appearance points each week.

Which WC Draft would you pick out of these options?

    A)
    Sanchez
    TAA - Christensen - Semedo
Salah - Torres- Raph - Sarr
    Ronaldo - DCL - Antonio
0 itb & Bench: Ward, Gray, White, Livra
(Gray to start ahead of Raph this week and mostly to cover Pep Roulette)

    B)
    Sanchez
    TAA - Dier - Coady
    Salah - Jota/Greenwood- Raph - Sar
    Ronaldo - DCL - Antonio
0 itb & Bench: Ward, Gray, White, Livra
(Jota if Firm is out for 4-5 GWs, otherwise Greenwood)

    C)
    Sanchez
    TAA - Dier - Coady
    Salah - Raph - Sarr - Gray
    Ronaldo - Lukaku - Antonio
0 itb & Bench: Ward, White, Livra, Gilmour

It'd be great if you just posted the differences between the 3.
I like B, but I don't like Gray to be on the bench. Either have him as a starter, or just take a 4.5 and save money instead

I'm trying to cancel my subscription, which renews 10th September (this Friday).

I get an error message 'Unable to cancel subscription. Please contact support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.'

This seems to be a recurring theme, has anyone had any luck actually managing to cancel?

Never tried although I am a little concerned they withdrew money off my credit card without my permission for membership.

If you read some posts here regarding their responses to this, it appears its akin to 'tough luck, recurring deductions were part of the T&Cs.' Customer service is not on their agenda when there's dollars to be had. This place used to be about the community, then Mark handed it over 🙁

I had another username before this, but switched as my rival found it! Been on here mostly lurking for over a decade, and I loved the 'community' feel. The preamble was great and the business model of Mark etc actually caring was great.

To actively stop people from cancelling membership is outrageous, surely they see this

What's more concerning is they replied to similar issues raised yesterday. Poor guy basically got stonewalled, that money may not mean much to them but could mean alot to others. He posted here, as what else are you going to do when you get given the talk-to-the-hand, and they replied 'stop having a whinge because you didn't get the outcome you wanted'.
Frankly im really getting the impression they are out of touch.

If you used paypal, first thing to do is go into paypal and remove this site as a preferred payment method. Without that it then needs to ask your permission to deduct

I cancelled last week (or at least presumed I did), wouldn't have known how to or the fact they were auto renewing but for somebody mentioned it on here. They could at least email you a week in advance to inform that your account is being auto renewed I guess?

Yeah absolutely. Pretty simple matter to let you know there's a deduction coming up if you choose to stay renewed. However I suspect the reason they don't is the same reason they moved to recurring deductions in the first place.
I'm really tossing up whether to keep it or not, simply due to their attitude to their client base. They aren't ground breaking these days (they used to be), and there really isn't much here that can't be gotten elsewhere

I'm not a member of Hub but they seem more clued in when it comes to keeping their members happy by all accounts. I only come on here for the forum these days (and that's gone way downhill in recent seasons) as there are still as few good folk on here. This will be the first season that I won't renew due to their handling of this membership renewal process primarily.

I'd add here that one of the reasons we added renewing subs is because users wanted to be shown some loyalty for their time on site. Auto-renew was the easiest way, with our current system, to allow people to lock in a price for the lifetime of their subscription

If this is the case, then will you consider a reminder email a week beforehand to remind users there's a charge about to come so they can make a decision as to whether they want to pay that charge?

It genuinely caught me off guard that people didn't notice or know, as it's in the first line of everything we've written on sign-up pages. (If we've missed it out anywhere please let me know and I can add it in). It wasn't something that we tried to bury deep in T&Cs it's in lots of headlines or sub-headlines. I know personally I kind of assume all subscription services are auto-renewal, certainly monthly but also annual, but still I think we tried to make it clear on sign-up. That's worked for many, like GCR above, who cancelled the same day he paid!

We'll be looking into the offering in the coming weeks, I'm sure it'll be discussed

Thanks Geoff, I think it's fairly obvious when you sign up, the issue is more the lack of ongoing notification. I've tried to summarise https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/24087421
The system didn't work for GCR, he used a hack to get around it because it wasn't working for him!

Might I also suggest that if this were actually the case, wouldn't it have been more customer focused to give them the option to auto-renew (yeah throw in your 'hey you keep this price for the lifetime of your subscription' rather than forcing it upon people?
Because what could/should be happening from a customer end if what you say is the case isn't happening

Always use paypal, and as soon as subscribe to anything go into it and cancel the recurring payment. All the robber sites use recurring payments as a norm now, and it is a blatent attempt to make money from forgetful people.

I fell victim to MLB TV and was a subscriber for nearly a whole extra year before I realised.

        How is that sub?

I had NHL.com last year but the games all start too late in the UK for me to really take advantage. MLB at least has more day games so I was considering it. Aside from what you mention, how was the service? Home/Away streams? Easy to use? All the playoff games?

I haven't been through emails yet, always come on site first, but will make sure you get a response if there's one still sitting there. But no need to worry as you cancelled many months ago.

        Hi Geoff,
Thanks for the reply. It says on my profile page that auto renew will be 10th Sept. If I have cancelled then great, but it's still showing as auto renew despite this. Just a heads up as I'm sure it'll be the same for others. Happy to send a screenshot via email if that helps.

Don't get me wrong as i am happy to support the site even though i very seldom give a look into the members area but i was surprised too that my subscription was automated.

Like who ever goes to the trouble of reading the fine print of the T&C's anyway?

Does feel like a bit of a money grab alright and i can see how it would leave a bad taste in the mouths of some people especially if the site does not make it easy for a member to get a refund easily.

Losing touch with the site base supporters with a stunt like that for sure.

don’t think so, Jimenez has never had a high ceiling so not someone you want to take a straight hit on.

Toney scored last week and if we get a goal every 3 games or so on average then that is pretty good for his price. Nice fixture this week for him too

DJ’s style and full on energy is a great fit for Leeds, he is a watch and see player for me but could be fantastic value.

            Not a bad finisher either

Why is Townsend odd? I have him too, looking to transfer him out. He had/has potential for a lot of assists with the amount if crosses he’s been instructed to whip in for DCL and takes some set pieces at an okay price point 5.5.

Just because he wasn’t template doesn’t make it an odd pick lol

I think Sarr has good potential for returns for the next 3-4 but probably not long term, Gray looks a good enabler to me, Traore just doesn't cut the mustard at all.

    Sanchez
Taa Shaw Veltman -- Ayling Tsimi
Salah Benrahma Greenwood Bruno -- Gilmour
    Toney Antonio Ings

    A: Bruno + Ings >> Torres + Ronaldo
    B: Bruno + Toney + Ings >> Raphinha + Ronaldo + DCL (-4)
    C: Tsimikas + Bruno + Ings >> Livramento + Jota + Ronaldo (-4)

With A and C, I will likely do Benrahma >> Raphinha in gw5

Yup, Shaw, Cancelo, James all look better. I currently have those alongside Trent with Sarr as first sub in case of a non runner (such as this GW he'll cover for James)

    3. Exeterslowly

It depends if you already own them and whether they are likely to get you some attacking points buddy

    4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

Also depends what time horizon being planned for

All 3 of those guys you mentioned plus ESR are generally shorter term fixture plays hoping to net some returns in the next 3-5

Sarr also (likely) has penalties, and Traore can’t keep getting 0 returns from almost 0.75 XGi per game in this new role

Gray I’m not convinced on though so shame on me - I’d have ESR before him as ESR is a star in the making & also has great fixtures

Everyone already has Shaw so in 5.5/6.0 defender terms I assume you mean Digne, Dias, Cancelo, James?

Out of those I think the midfielders have good chances of scoring more in the next 3-5 (although I’d prefer Digne to Gray tbf, but don’t want to play a back 4 either)

      1. Andy_Social

My response was based on long-term planning. Generally I like to get a player in and keep them for at least 10-12 GWs, and examine the FDR accordingly. Those budget mids will return occasionally even with easy fixtures, whereas the equivalent-priced defenders ought to get a decent number of clean sheets and the odd return on a string of good fixtures.

plus they are set and forget for me...A Liverpool, United, City & Chelsea attacking defender set and forget seems a decent approach for me rather than going cheap ATB...time will tell

Thanks yes he is on set pieces but don’t like that Norwich team. As you say he is a bench warmer anyway. I think sissoko might be a better choice as he does make attacking runs and has a shot or two in his armoury. What about moder? Don’t know much about him other than he played the last game as a left wing back?

As you say, they're priced 4.5 because they're rarely expected to get you more than 3 points. But there's Gilmour and Brownhill on set pieces and Sissoko as a box-to-box mid. It looks to me as if Bissouma has been nudged forward into a similar role now he's got that new guy in a double-pivot.

Leeds will most likely play into Liverpool's hands so can see a few goals in that...Salah looks the best C this GW for me (hopefully given the Ronaldo hype, and likely far less armbands due to same hype, he mightn't hurt me as much as he could)

Yeah maybe I was thinking of the reverse fixture or even the game the season before. It was 4-3 I think. Still think he would be a good choice. Leeds are not renowned for their defender and a good Liverpool side should beat them and score well?

Yeah if at Anfield he'd almost be certain to haul but still after watching the Leeds games in full they're off the pace that they set last season I feel...could be there for the taken by Liverpool if they don't show improvement

I think its best to go for 4-3-3 right now as there are not many mid priced option.

    Torres? Rotation risk
Jota? Firmino there. Short term pick
Benrahma? Fixtures are tough ahead, rotation risk,
Grey? There is a reason he is 5.5. Good value though.
    Sarr? Hot and cold
Adama? Good footballer, not good fpl wise ( so far)

On the other hand, double chelsea or double city defence can easily give you better points. Say rudiger+James for the upcoming fixtures. City and chelsea will keep most cs this year.

You are not wrong there. A 4-4-3 is my pick as well. There are always pros and cons with popular picks and you have already picked out some cons. Most of them are still good choices though but for me I will be swapping benrahmi out in gw5

I like it in theory but wouldn’t like having two 4.5 mids on the bench every week. Maybe when this seasons 5.0 Soucek breaks out id consider it. Still just think that 3-4-3 is the staple formation personally

I've come to the conclusion that the best way to get the premiums in is to go 4-3-3 with 2x4.5 on the bench as well. It's not pretty, but it does look effective.

Can’t even play FPL without having to worry about vaccination, haha. Resisting the temptation to use transfers now so I can wait until the last minute to hopefully get a good idea of who’ll be unavailable. This just highlights the importance of a strong bench and maybe even trying to bring in players who don’t represent their country.

Indeed - both intl breaks are going to cause havoc

But this does raise the question over how the CL and EL fixtures will effect play.

So many countries are amber and I’d imagine that a large percentage of players aren’t vaccinated

If they travel without special dispensation then they quarantine on arrival in test and release

Anyone going to captain Bruno (C) without having Ronaldo for GW4?

seems the ultimate anti-herd move this GW and could be gold...Bruno v Newcastle, think of how many would captain him if Lukaku & Ronaldo never arrived!

Yep. Either him or Antonio. There has to be a lot of goals for UTD though so expect the points to be shared around.

Did Harrison to Sarr which was a bit silly as just realized afterwards that Sarr has a game with Senegal today...bloody trigger happy fingers strike again!

If Firmino def out for a while then Tsimi to a Wolves 4.5 (playing instead of Livramento vs WH) and then Bruno + Ings to Ronaldo and Jota an option and the hit should be clawed back quickly. A/D 1 otherwise unless get an indication Ronaldo not starting

Cheers. tbh i do not really fancy a hit. so two ft would be optimal

Do nothing until later in the week. Assuming no relevant injury news etc then at that point just do Ings to DCL and roll the other FT.

Using a transfer to move out Bruno at home to Newcastle in itself doesn't feel wise, whilst Lukaku has tricky fixtures for a bit and Ronaldo is certainly not certain/likely to outscore DCL in the coming weeks.

Still don't get how, why & on what basis are people getting rid of Greenwood & Benrahma on wildcard this week?

For me it’s quite simple. I’m going Raphina, can bench Raph and play Ben White. Benrahma has United next week and Europa kicks in.

Getting rid of form players is always high risk. I wonder how many elite players are playing their WC this week? Not many I fancy.

If you're playing a WC you've got to be far more forward thinking. Both are likely to have less gametime and Bennys fixtures aren't as favourable as they have been this far

I concur with you completely. I used to think the same way before so I can get where they are coming from. These thoughts are purely based on assumptions made thinking that as now they have lot of talent in the team and fixtures are going to get congested, so they will not be nailed anymore.

Unlike Torres, in these cases we don't even know how Ronaldo & Vlasic are actually going to fit into their respective systems, but the desire to stay one step ahead of other managers causes you to lose them now itself even when they are in form.
