Meet the Manager: Seven-time top 10k finisher reveals his Gameweek 4 Wildcard

In his latest Meet the Manager episode, Joe (@FFScout_Joe) chats to Tino Waked (@tinowaked) one of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers of all time, with seven top 10k finishes across his 13-year career.

His stellar run in FPL includes four top 4k finishes as well as a top 500 end of season rank.

Could an incredible eighth top 10k season be on its way this time around? At 23k heading into Gameweek 4 he certainly looks on course for a strong year once again.

Tino reveals the secrets to his success over his career and how dividing the season into a safe and steady first half and risk taking final few months has helped him.

The statistics available at Fantasy Football Scout have also aided him, as he runs through his favourite to look out for in each position. This research works best when combined with the eye test. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has curtailed his ability to watch games from his home in Egypt recently.

The health crisis has also seen fans absent from stadiums, a factor that has disrupted his usual close attention to home and away form.

Even though he is riding high in the rankings this season, he has taken the uncharacteristically early season, bold move of Wildcarding.

Fixture swings and the addition of Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Manchester United’s Christian Ronaldo (£12.5m) to the game have prompted him to make the move.

But will both of these elite strikers make it into his final draft, or just one?

The Meet the Manager series is where Joe chats to FPL managers with a strong record of success, an interesting view of the game and are offering the community a unique insight into Fantasy management.

Joe’s chat with Tino can be viewed below:

It looks that way. Tricky for Tuchel to just drop Alonso when he’s been playing so well.

    Thoughts on this wildcard:

    Sanchez/Steer

    TAA/Shaw/Christensen/Williams/Duffy

    Salah/Jota/Raphinha/A Traore/Allan

    CR7/Antonio/DCL

Doesn’t necessarily “matter” it’s just hard to believe. So much interest in Ronaldo’s return (see Utd’s Instagram increase) and so much money potential (see the shirt sales increase) that’s it’s kind of funny that it’s not coupled with a live UK showing.

I'd be interested to know how posting their teams affects their ranks - I imagine it can't be helping - also the pool of good players, whether by copying or not, is clearly getting bigger. Wouldn't surprise me if there are more automated/bot/multiple teams out there now too

I don't know whether there's enough money on offer for someone to go to the bother of running a raft of auto teams.

He's 23K currently and was top 2K in 2018 when there were still many millions of managers playing. The pandemic has been a big factor his last two season ranks as well, but yes, obviously there are more better managers each year.

around 2008 there were about 1mln players. its been steadily growing by around 500k/pa since then.

I started fantasy football playing Yahoo game and not FPL (which still is/was the best format).

I casually played until three years ago so i am one of the late starters. Took me a while to work out chips and hit strategy (still do). Finished 1k last year but was 200k with htree weeks ago. Played too defensive at the end lol.

If only i swapped Zaha for gGeenwood in the triple header for a -8: )

      First impressions:

Not convinced I want to pay 5mln for a Wolves defender - and there are 2 of them in this team!
Why Rudiger? Attacking output is available for 0.1-0.2 more, or similar levels of nailedness for 0.5m less.
Gray has no stats to back him up. ESR will haul.
Torres - last season was a 19,2,1,2,1,17,2,0,1,2.... sort of player so is a frustrating own. Will get rotated for sure and lei che liv in the next 3 doesnt get worse than that.
Dier - is he nailed? and is he worth 4.6. why not White @4.3(soon) or even Williams @4m. he doesnt cover wk6 (Rudiger vs City) well as he plays Arsenal.

I dunno, can’t see that game being high scoring. Toney always in with a shot to score one goal though. It will probably be a 0-0 or 1-1.

No I would keep for one GW. Instead of DCL, I am thinking Bamford fixtures look good GW5 to GW10 (same boat as you) and being overlooked because of Wolves/Arsenal runs

I have White. I haven't held him this long to not start him v Norwich at home! Plus you would fancy West Ham to score against Southampton.

Thoughts on Ramsdale? If he starts vs Norwich and they keep a clean sheet does he keep his place?

No idea tbh. Might be worth the risk with the rest of the def and team.

Will be looking at at a strong defense as well, at least from ~GW7. But four premiums and a 45 is too much imho, so probably only one Chelsea defender for me. There are always some higher value 4.5's emerging - I'll be looking at White or Coady for now. Then Livramento/Williams for 5th spot

      TAA Chilly James Cancelo/Dias (Livra).

Is how I would go in a 4 at the back setup

With that set-up, is one of Chilly or James always play? Ins't it between Alonso and Chilwell?

Chilwell plays 75% of games. The good thing about defenders is they tend not to come on for cameos.

Any suggestions for a Barnes replacement, got 7.7 to spend?
Already have Raphinha and can't get Jota as I already have 3 Liverpool players.

Greenwood and Torres are both rotation risk so not sure if I should go there, thinking of getting Mount in...

      Mount is a decent shout.

If you want to free up funds, Ben/Fornals or Sarr are options.

Also moving Barnes, but next week. Probably for Mount or Jota.

Cheers, yeah would like Jota as well and could delay the transfer to next week and get Jota in but think I want to have a transfer available next week for Benrahma to Sarr

I'd go greenwood, especially vs Newcastle. Think he's less of a rotation risk than Torres for the moment. Mount's another stellar pick

    which move looks best ??

    A. Bruno and Toney > Greenwood and Lukaku
    B. Bruno and Toney > Sarr and CR7
    C. Toney>Jimenez (save a ft)
    D. Tsimikas>Semedo(save a ft)

A or B so tough. Greenwood, Lukaku great this weel, Sarr and Ronaldo next week.

Maybe B, assuming you are playing just 2 premiums. If I don't go, Ronaldo, this week I will wait a while I think

Son + DCL or Ronaldo + Traore

With ronaldo you got a strong captain option that you gotta factor in, think as a pair son and dcl will outscore traore and ronaldo

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 8 Years

agree, if you've got someone else to captain then Son & DCL are better - why I think one premium is best

this wasn't my question (reposting for Camzy) - I mean, I don't see why you couldn't own all 4 but guess that isn't an option

active WC, any suggestion? A bit unsure about Benny and if Lukaku is better pick than Ron

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA / Alonso / Dier (Duffy/ Williams)
Benny / Salah / Jota / Raph (Allan)
    Antonio Ron Jimmy

Need a WC or a (-4) would be enough?

    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA, Shaw, Ayling (Veltman, Livramento)
    Salah, Bruno*, Raphinha, Greenwood, Barnes*
    Antonio, Ings* (Obafemi)

    2FT, 0.1 ITB

I don't like hits but at the worse case, I think Barnes and Ings are -2 hits this week if your incoming players blank, so it is good this week

      1. TheTinman

        How are they -2 hits?

Because both Ings and Barnes out with 2FT is a -4 in total (sorry just the way i think when taking hits, should have explained it better). So if you think Ings and Barnes will blank this week, the two new players coming in, only need to score 2 points more each or 4 more points combined than the ones you are taking out, it has been a success and better moving forward.

Taking Tsi out for Liva just to get Jota in for example is a -4 hit, as there isn't much upside in getting Liva in on the bench to score a zero for your team, kind of thing 🙂

Depends if you wanna get Ronaldo or Lukaku, midfield makes it difficult, downgrade Havertz or Grealish to Sarr/Grey? Im still unsure if I get Ronaldo, will wait few days at least.
