Meet the Manager: Seven-time top 10k finisher reveals his Gameweek 4 Wildcard

In his latest Meet the Manager episode, Joe (@FFScout_Joe) chats to Tino Waked (@tinowaked) one of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers of all time, with seven top 10k finishes across his 13-year career.

His stellar run in FPL includes four top 4k finishes as well as a top 500 end of season rank.

Could an incredible eighth top 10k season be on its way this time around? At 23k heading into Gameweek 4 he certainly looks on course for a strong year once again.

Tino reveals the secrets to his success over his career and how dividing the season into a safe and steady first half and risk taking final few months has helped him.

The statistics available at Fantasy Football Scout have also aided him, as he runs through his favourite to look out for in each position. This research works best when combined with the eye test. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has curtailed his ability to watch games from his home in Egypt recently.

The health crisis has also seen fans absent from stadiums, a factor that has disrupted his usual close attention to home and away form.

Even though he is riding high in the rankings this season, he has taken the uncharacteristically early season, bold move of Wildcarding.

Fixture swings and the addition of Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Manchester United’s Christian Ronaldo (£12.5m) to the game have prompted him to make the move.

But will both of these elite strikers make it into his final draft, or just one?

The Meet the Manager series is where Joe chats to FPL managers with a strong record of success, an interesting view of the game and are offering the community a unique insight into Fantasy management.

Joe’s chat with Tino can be viewed below:

    Thoughts on this -8?

Bruno, Son, Ings, Scarlett --> Ronaldo, Torres, Raphinha, DCL

    Would give:

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Coufal
    Salah Raphinha Torres Benrahma
    Ronaldo Antonio DCL

    Steele Ayling Gilmour Tsimikas

It is possible that out of the four players you are bringing in, not a single one starts, for various reasons...

I've got a question that I doubt will get answered but I'll ask anyway.
If I planned my ideal week 12 team, with the intention of slowly getting to it with transfers only (kind of what Seb did in his article), what buffer would you aim for in terms of budget. i.e. if I have an ideal week 12 team that I created using prices now - how much do you think I would need in the bank to cover price rises? 1m? 0.5m?

0.5 would seem heaps imo. Time the transfers to minimize prize increases.

Difficult to say. Somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0 sounds about right. There is very little chance planned transfers will work out as planned for that length of time though - things always crop up! Good luck 🙂

Thanks, fairly different responses above but I was thinking 0.5 to 1.0 as well. Created a really nice week 12 squad with 0.3 itb which seems fanciful on both counts, but I tend to take a hit every 2/3 weeks normally so don't mind sticking to that.

I guess the secret will be being flexible within one team - i.e. I want Semedo, but in reality Marcal could be just as good, Stones over Dias, that sort of thing.

Just trying to plan ahead and hold that WC for 15/16 no matter what.

Any time I look at it any depth, I just feel the transition weeks like 7/8, and 12, can be just a -4 or -8 whereas I think 15 (it's really 16 and week 15 would likely just be dead-ending my team in the extreme) is something where I would need 7/8 transfers.

Also I know second wildcard will be like week 37 so the later the better really.

I'm targeting a WC in gw16. Utd and City have great fixtures swings. I would stock up on Spurs players from gw12-15, and gw16 is a good time to ditch Leeds and Wolves assets as well.

agreed - its easy to bring in chelsea assets for united ones in 7 (shaw, greenwood and ronaldo to james, mount and lukaku).... current team certainly doesn't need a wildcard, so Im aiming to hold as long as i can - 14-16 look good weeks to do it due to some key fixture swings again, but i will wilcard earlier if needed.

I just think comparing Semedo (and Traore) to last year might be a bit dangerous. Lage's system is surely going to see a big increase in the numbers for both of them.

Some of the positions Semedo is taking up are insane, it's like Cancelo on crack. Marcal does not quite mirror the movement on the left but certainly not a bad alternative at all.

You'd be lucky if your planned transfers work out exactly as you hope 3 GWs into the future, let alone 9 GWs down the road. Don't look so far out imo.

Loving this 3-5-2 WC team. Mostly template but little Maverick with Tierney & Traore. All inputs/critics are welcome 🙂

    Sa
    TAA | Shaw | Tierney
    Salah | Torres | Jota | Traore | Raphinha
    CR7 | Antonio

    Bench: 4.0 GK | Duffy | Williams | 4.5 Fwd
ITB: 0.8 to strengthen Bench like Williams ➡ Semedo or 4.5 Fwd ➡ Dennis

Thanks for bearing with me (too many RMTs, I guess)..

Not sure if it's stupid looking forward, may look stupid looking backwards though. He's quite attacking and with their main defence line back against a Norwich side that mustered single goal in last 3, I am hopeful he delivers over next couple of months (fingers crossed!).

I'm an Arsenal fan and hope so to, but the team including the defence is in tatters and what you may gain in attacking returns you'll lose for clean sheet points.

I totally understand your frustration and caution on Tierney and maybe will re-think it now. But many a times these international breaks have been quite useful for teams running low on confidence to break the losing streak. Hopefully Arsenal gathers some momentum too, sad to see them at rock-bottom. Best of luck mate.

I have a heap of Arsenal supporting mates and every season, literally every season, they have their heads in their hands for most of Aug/sept- And then things start to get better. Admittedly last season, not much better, but they always get better.

I think Tierney is decent, non-template pick.

I`m Juggling between Torres or Raphina as it would free up funds leaving .7m itb

I need advice, midfield i am finding tricky, see below WC..

    Sanchez
    Cresswell / TAA / Shaw
    Salah / Grealish / Raph / ESR
    Ronaldo / DCL / Antonio

    4.0 / Livra / Williams / Sissoko

I want City cover and feel like Grealish will be consistent with the odd haul too, dont like Torres with Foden & KDB both back in training. Could rip it up and go 433 but always preferred 343.

I do like it, guessing you'll be on board then Ronaldo - Lukaku transfer gameweek 7 aswell.

My only gripe is that you've got Street. When i play WC i like my whole bench to play, normally a 4.5 defender 4.5 midfielder and 4.0 defender but guess with the 3-5-2 structure it doesn't allow this.

    Serious Question.

IF and I know its a big IF right now as we don't have any concrete news, But if Firmino is injured for a decent length of time - 4/5 gameweeks - Is Salah still essential in our teams? I've been watching a lot of content and people seem to think Salah isn't a 12.5m midfielder when Jota is on the pitch.

I've also heard that Salah's stats with Firmino are much better than with Jota, but I think a mid getting 20+ goals per season is worth more than Ronaldo or Lukaku even with extra pt per goal, CS bonus etc.

Also you might find it hard to get him back in if you have no other premium mids

The notable thing with Salah and TAA with the introduction of Elliott is that TAA is drifting inside a lot and Salah is drifting wider a bit, Nothing to do with Jota/Firminho.

But it hasn't affected Salah's output at all.

    Sanchez
    TAA - Livramento - Shaw - Veltmam
    Salah - Bruno - Barnes - Raphinha
    Ings - Antonio

    Foster - Ayling - Brownhill - Scarlett

3m in the bank and 2 transfers.

Tempted by Ronaldo, but if i do this below then i still have Fernades + Lukaku
    Barnes > Gray
    Ings > Lukaku

Or is it best to downgrade Fernades and spread the funds?

Surely clean sheets com into the equation - therefore it might be worthwhile to find the extra £0,5 for Sá, Meslier or Schmeichel. De Gea even, if he nails the spot.

Reckon these international "injuries" are so players can come back to their clubs and get ready for GW4 early.

Anyone heard any news in regard to the fantasy scout H2H leagues?
I have found my name and new league, but in the wrong division.
Are they still working on it?
I notice they have started scoring but heard no news on official start.

I asked about it after GW2 (because I couldn't find my name).
Got a response saying they were working on it.
They then added the header at the top of the Community page saying "After GW3".
So I've assumed they've been on it during the IB.

Reading between the lines, I think there were some gremlins to work through - but I'm speculating there.

Why do you think you're in the wrong division? There's no difference in the various divisions across the leagues, and you can get slotted into any of them. I think they try to balance them out based on the finishing positions from the previous season?

      1. ARH
        • 7 Years

Thanks for the comment. You are correct.
I should have said found my new division, but in the wrong league. Was league 8 last year, finished 2nd, so hoping this year in league 7.

        1. Brimble82
          • 5 Years

          My situ was the same.
Finished 3rd in my league 8 division (104 I think), so should be in league 7 - but I painstakingly (on work time!) checked all 64 divisions, and I'm nowhere to be seen!

          Sad times.

They may be still working their way down through the leagues and sorting them out. There were a few anomalies in the top leagues up until a week or so ago, but they now appear to be rectified and haven't changed since.

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    —————Sanchez——————
    -—-Dias —- Reguillon—-TAA ——
    Traore - Salah - Raphina - Torres
    -—Ronaldo — Antonio — DCL —-

    Bench: Fodder x4

One dilemma is Duffy/Jota vs Dias/Traore

I don't think his price is dropping. It's only on -54% and even that has been wrong all international break. But yes, if you buy him now for 11.5 and he drops to 11.4 before the deadline that would be pointless.

      He's not on -54%, he's on +54%
Highly unlikely he will drop, and latest report (via the highly reputable 'West London Sport') is that he should be fit for the wknd.
I'd just get in now if you want him.
