A tap in from Wayne Rooney clinches a 1-0 victory for England and sets up a quarter final showdown with Italy on Sunday June 24. France go through as Group D runners-up despite a 2-0 loss against Sweden that saw Laurent Blanc’s side lose for the first time in 24 games – hardly the perfect preparation for their last eight clash with champions Spain:

England 1 Ukraine 0
Roy Hodgson makes just one change from the XI that started the previous match against Sweden. With his two-match suspension now over, Wayne Rooney made an instant return to the first-team as Andy Carroll dropped to the bench. The United man made the difference up front, firing four shots and scoring the only goal of the match, courtesy of a close-range tap-in early in the second half. Steven Gerrard created three goalscoring opportunities and provided the assist for Rooney’s goal – the England skipper now stands on 18 points and is one of only four players to pick up attacking returns in all three rounds of group matches.

Joleon Lescott’s clean sheet and extra point for recovered balls took his tally to 17 points – at 5.6, he’s been the best value player in Hodgson’s side and, like Gerrard and Rooney, can expect plenty of Fantasy investment prior to Thursday evening’s deadline. While the likes of Lescott has over 18% ownership, Rooney has a mere 4.4% due to his recent ban and looks like a decent differential armband option for day four of the quarter finals.

A tournament that had started so promisingly ended in bitter disappointment for the co-hosts. Ukraine’s Matchday one victory over Sweden was no more than a distant memory, as back-to-back defeats against France and England sealed their fate. Oleg Blokhin tinkered with his starting XI, changing four of his first-team for the must-win match. The front two were changed – Andriy Shevchenko was unable to shake off a knee injury and only made the bench, while Andriy Voronin was also omitted, with Marko Devic and Artem Milevskyi handed the forward roles. At the back, Yaroslav Rakitskiy replaced Taras Mikhalik at centre-half, while Sergei Nazarenko dropped out for Denis Garmash in central midfield.

Yevhen Konoplyanka had five attempts but managed a mere one on target, while both Yevhen Selin and Andriy Yarmolenko created four goalscoring opportunities apiece but England – aided by a bizarre linesman’s call – held firm to chalk up their first clean sheet of the tournament and set up a showdown with Italy.

France 0 Sweden 2
Erik Hamren’s men finished the tournament with their pride intact, after stunning the Group D favourites 2-0. The Sweden boss made a couple of enforced changes – with Johan Elmander and Rasmus Elm both injured, Ola Toivonen and Emir Bajrami were handed starting roles up front and on the left respectively. Seb Larsson was the star man on the night for the Swedes – the Sunderland winger provided a goal and assist and had four attempts on goal, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic rewarded his 17% of Fantasy owners by notching his second goal of the tournament.

Laurent Blanc rested Yohan Cabaye after the Newcastle midfielder picked up a thigh problem in the previous match, allowing Yann M’Vila his first start of the tournament. Out wide, Jeremy Menez missed out despite scoring against Ukraine –Hatem Ben Arfa was the replacement as France kept with the 4-2-3-1 formation that helped them defeat Ukraine last time round.

Karim Benzema was heavily backed for the armband last night and had as many as eight attempts, though failed to muster a single shot in target. The Real Madrid man also created four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates, as did Samir Nasri and Mathieu Debuchy but Blanc’s side passed up chance after chance to find the net. With just three goals and a single clean sheet over their trio of group games, the tournament has been a bitter disappointment thus far and, with their unbeaten record now gone, morale in the camp – and Fantasy faith – will have considerably dipped ahead of the game with Spain next Saturday. Blanc will now need to make at least one change for the weekend – Philippe Mexes picked up his second yellow card and is now suspended, with Laurent Koscielny looking likely to replace him at the back.

Can someone explain how the substitutions work during a gameweek (i.e. the quarter finals)?
Can you make as many as you want as long as the player you are bringing in has not played yet? Also, does it cost any points?

I am just wondering whether to field all of my cheap Czech players as they are playing first, then sub them out for the others if they don't score....

      Yes.

Nailed on. Likely to go all the way and still capable of earning you attacking points.

I see a lot of people going for Gerrard instead but I really don't like that call. England have played 3 poor defences so far. Italy will be a far tougher test and I can't see many (if any) goals for them.

Spain, on the other hand, could run rampant against anyone and France's morale may well be low after that performance last night. Spain could give them a serious beating on Saturday.

Why are you putting Benzema and Welbeck up front?????

Two strikers not reknowned for their strike rate at international level who have the toughest qtr final matchups!!!

Why £112.8m in the bank? Forget this Benzema nonsene and get Gomez in. You need more Spain especially in defence, Alba is a must. German midfielder as well is sorely necessary.

Since i have Boateng i wanted to spread the risk a little and Portugal have been decent at the back and going up against Greece they could as well get a cleanie. Cabaye has alot more offensive threat than M`vila if he plays, which i think he will. Good value for 6,5 imo:)

Portugal are playing the Czech Republic, who are very threatening offensively. Germany are playing Greece. But i agree about Cabaye being more of a threat. I fancied Diarra(5m) to grab a headed goal but his starting spot is in danger of being taken.

I disagree. Group stages are where the 4-1, 3-1s happen.
Knockout stages are more 1-0s, I'm definitely chasing cleanies.

Perhaps, but when teams are down 1-0 with 25 min to go they have nothing to lose and the late goal occurs more often than in the group stages. But then again, a solid defence is a solid defence and the likes of Germany and Spain and Portugal would be my shouts

Yeah me too, they offer nothing at all in terms of offensive points. Go a cheap punt and upgrade the other imo!

Busquets is in there for RB points - he has racked up a few.

Khedira advances just as much as Schweinsteiger but minus the penalty duties so should do just as well for goals/assists.

        Who else do you suggest?

Yeah but he will get you 3-4 points max. Khedira might go forward but certainly Schwein has more quality in the final pass and shot taking. I would consider Cabaye for either of those, and if you downgrade Iniesta (which i think you should look into) then you can get Pirlo or Gerrard, which both have been outstanding thus far.

Have a hunch for Portugal but its really hard to tell at this point. For me either going cheap defenders or pricier ones with some offensive threat is the way to go

Germany & Spain. England have a decent chance and have one of the cheapest defensive options in Lescott(5.5m). Italy also have a decent chance but the price of their defenders probably means that it won't be worth the risk.

The defence and keepers is the the standard. And Pirlo, Sweinsteiger and Cabaye tends to be in a lot. No Pilar is a change though.

tbh, I am focusing on my ML with my friends - 300EUR to win - and I believe that none of them knows this website 😉

I find Kolar as a quite differential - just 0.4% owns him, and he should play again in Rosicky's spot

Personally, I'd leave France well alone. I got rid of my remaining French players last night. I genuinely cannot see them doing anything but get pasted by Spain.

Rather have a £4m Greece midfielder who will probably get you the same amount of points as Cabaye and spend the rest of the money elsewhere.

I'd also go for Iniesta for Spain midfield and see if ye can get Pirlo instead of Alonso

Same as vs Ireland imo. The 3-5-2 one is altered to deal with 2 strikers, and since Spain plays with at most 1, they`ll need more bodies in midfield. Bonucci might come in for Chiellini if he`s injured, other than that i predict the same back 4 as last.
