Calvert-Lewin injury latest as Everton’s budget FPL midfielders catch the eye

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Scout Notes from Gameweek 4 with analysis of Everton v Burnley.

EVERTON 3-1 BURNLEY

  • Goals: Michael Keane (£5.0m), Andros Townsend (£5.4m), Demarai Gray (£5.6m) | Ben Mee (£4.9m)
  • Assists: Townsend, Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) x2 | Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m)
  • Bonus (projected): Townsend x3, Doucoure x2, Keane x1

CALVERT-LEWIN INJURED

Everton manager Rafa Benitez confirmed shortly before kick-off that Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) could be out for “two or three weeks”, but did warn it could be longer.

“He has broken his toe. He was training with problems and playing with pain. He had an injury the other day to his quadriceps and we have to wait two-to-three weeks, maybe more.”

Calvert-Lewin had been playing through the pain barrier but the England international now faces a spell on the sidelines, with Everton facing Aston Villa (a), Norwich City (h) and Manchester United (a) before the next international break in October.

EVERTON CHANGE SHAPE AS BUDGET MIDFIELDERS IMPRESS

As a result of Calvert-Lewin’s injury, Benitez switched to a back three formation with Richarlison (£7.5m) leading the line, flanked by Demarai Gray (£5.6m) and Andros Townsend (£5.4m).

However, Everton struggled in their new shape and lacked intensity until they moved to a 4-3-3 on the hour mark. That signalled an instant improvement, with Townsend and Gray adding to Michael Keane’s (£5.0m) earlier strike.

It’s now three goals in as matches for Gray this season, though it is worth noting that they have arrived from just three shots on target, while Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) produced two assists and also had a goal disallowed for offside.

Demarai Gray’s goal attempts in 2021/22 (shots on target in green)

Meanwhile, it was a quiet night for Richarlison, who ended the match with just one goal attempt and was replaced by new-signing Salomon Rondon (£6.0m) on 81 minutes.

The Toffees won their opener against Southampton once Benitez switched his system at half-time, and his tactical changes were key to Everton remaining unbeaten once again.

BURNLEY STRUGGLE WITH EVERTON CHANGES

A well drilled Burnley side impressed for 60 minutes at Goodison Park, but struggled to cope after Everton’s changes.

Before that, Ben Mee (£4.9m) had converted from a Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) cross, netting on his 200th Premier League appearance.

Elsewhere, Chris Wood (£6.9m) missed an early big chance, as he couldn’t get a head on a lovely Dwight McNeil (£5.9m) cross, though his off the ball movement and running in behind was good for the opening 45 minutes.

Following the defeat, Burnley are still without a win and sit 18th in the table with just one point from their opening four matches.

“We are quite a wise group and they know you have to make it happen. We had a mad six minutes which cost us. We did not respond to their leveller and it killed our performance. A lot of it was right.

The challenge you have in football is that you are searching for the first win but if you come off it a little bit, give the ball away cheaply and they score. The yardages are important when you are on top, you keep up the pressure.

Last year home and away form changed, we kept the stadium quiet but our group is wise enough to know fans change quickly. That is part of being in the Premier League.

Last season we had injuries and were stretched. The performances are not far away but the margins are tight. We are performing well as a team but we cannot keep having a soft 10 minutes against Brighton and a soft six minutes here.” – Sean Dyche

EVERTON XI: Pickford, Godfrey (Gomes 61), Keane, Mina, Coleman, Allan, Doucoure, Digne, Gray (Iwobi 88), Townsend, Richarlison (Rondon 81)

BURNLEY XI: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundsson (Lennon 76), Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil, Barnes (Vyrdra 76), Wood (Rodriguez 86)

After DCL injury my team is a little bit bare at the front, meaning that I have NO playing striker...

    Sanchez
    TAA-Shaw-White-Ayling
    Salah-Raph-Bruno-Greenwood-Benrahma
    DCL(*)

    Steele-Antonio(*)-Tsimi-Perica(*)

I need to sort it out and thinking of some moves.

Who would you think score the most in the next 2?:

    A) Bruno + Bamford
    B) Bruno + Jimenez
    C) Ronaldo + Traore (-4)
    D) Ronaldo + Torres (-4)

I would go Ron and Gray.

Morning everyone. I was thinking about how a template is starting to form with TAA close to essential, Salah of course, the rush for Luk and Ron double enabled by the 4.0/4.1 defenders and Gray. With the exception of Torres as a bit of gamble, there are no City attacking assets currently nailed. Add to that the DCL injury too. I feel the margins for gains are becoming slender. What does everyone think?

I think the bigger issue is the LUK v RON debate.

I think some are going to realise that LUK may be the better option if you are only going to have one of those. LUK is 1 mill cheaper and CHS are arguably, the better team so investing in their players makes more sense as they are fixture proof.

Having both of them does really weaken your team imo.

Interesting point. Agreed on Rom being potentially the better choice over Ron. I hit the WC with the Ron / Rom double act last week and ended on 84pts this week. So I would say rather than weakens, this duo limits your selections and as many are saying, 433 is really the strongest choice. I think that the premium defenders can easily outscore the mid-price mids this season. Add the rotation risks of Torres, Jota, Greenwood etc. too and the midfield choice is not that bountiful anyway.

Agree with this. For me Lukaku looks the much better option from GW 7 onwards and I'll go without Ron for a while from then on. Gray / Gallagher / Traore etc are going to hurt you if you have to play 3 of them every week long term.

Yes, totally get everyone talking about Rom being the better choice from GW7 onwards, but, if Ron is banging them in big in gws 5 and 6 it might not be as easy to hop off.

I don't think having both of them weakens your team. U can just opt out of having Salah. They both outscored him last week didn't they.

Bear in mind Salah was away at Leeds, Ron played a weakened Villa.Utd we’re at home to Newcastle so comparing over this one week not really fair.

Leeds have conceded the joint second highest amount of goals...they were torn open again and again. Mane just failed to capitalise.

Agree with this completely. That should have been a baseball score. Leeds have looked totally unconvincing, especially in defense.

Anyone who had planned a GW7/8 WC feel like moving it up to this GW? I've got DCL, Antonio, tsimikas, coufal all 4 whom I wanna sell, wanna bring in Lukaku, but also bring in one city & Leeds attackers for their fixtures against Leeds & Southampton. On WC I can do all this, which I had anyway originally planned for GW7 or GW8
    Here's my team

    Sanchez/Steele
    TAA/Shaw/Coufal/Ayling/Tsimikas
    Salah/Gray/Benrahma/Greenwood/Brownhill/
    Antonio/DCL/Ronaldo

Lukaku isnt that good against good side. I will wait befor gw 7 and see if ronaldo Does well in tough matches. If he does, i will move to ron, luk, bam. If he doesnt just swap ron for luk

Spurs aren't who they used to be 😛 and he's in a team that creates more chances than he's ever gotten. He might not score a lot against City but he'll do well against Spurs. And then it's a sea of green.

Spurs are 14th in the table on XGc - they haven’t been defending well

Kaku is a good finisher (131 goals from 124 XG)

Put those two together… Kaku has a good chance of returns

Whats the early captain choice for next week? I'm leaning towards CR7 if WHU play their first 11 in EL.

    Salah the obv second option.

Woah, nice one. I've dropped down to OR 776. I fancy CR7 against a post-Europa Hammers defence - although I'll wait to see their line-up for that game. I wouldn't be averse to Lukaku against the Spuds defence though. Unlike me, you've got Salah. My view is that won't be an easy game for Liverpool but I expect Salah to be the popular pick.

I just think Liverpool are a different beast to their three recent games. Their form is better at Selhurst and I feel - at this early stage - that we're looking at a result closer to theirs vs Chelsea.

Salah for me. United are a bit less impressive on the road and West Ham can just sit deep and try to rely on attacking on the counter. Without Antonio to hassle United's backline that might be the best way to try to come up with a result.

Getting Ronaldo on WC then downgrade to Lukaku is the sensible thing to do right, team looks better without Ronaldo but not having him in that game v Aston villa worries me

Guys have Antonio dcl benrahma. Earlier plan is to do Ben to raph free. Now my options are

    A) dcl to bam free
    B) dcl and ben to bam and raph -4

And I have to play coady or allan next week also cuz I like to keep Antonio.
    Suggestions guys

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Ramsdale
    James TAA Cancelo Marcal
    Salah Raphinha Sarr Gray
    Ronaldo Lukaku

    Steele Gallagher Livra Scarlett

Concerned it's a bit light in midfield but with Firmino due back soon can't see many great options in the 6-7.5 midfield bracket. Cheers

Am I good to go this week? Used my FT to do DCL > Bamford & benching Antonio for Sissoko.

    Sanchez
    Trent - Rudiger - Marcal
    Salah - Jota - Torres - Traore - Sissoko
    Bamford - CR7

Bench: Steele - Williams - Livramento & Antonio

I feel it’s now or never to decide on the up top double premium - price rises will make it unachievable

I can’t bring myself to do it - such a sacrifice to the team!

Yeah of course and then it’s shite

Confined to playing Allan/Williams every game or alike - switching between two budget 6 mil midfielders - and they will die out

If you do it now. You can have it. If you wait, you can't have it.

Williams is okay for a few games to save up to 2FTs then you can switch other players about.

It will only work if willing to go without Salah. Cant see how a Salah-Luka-Ron trio will work over 8-10 games.

Currently we do have cheap options in defense and mids but they are unlikely to continue their form.

        Prefer Sarr

Gray has 3 goals from 0.91 XG (and no assists from 0.4 XA) - he's not going to keep doing this

Sarr will have penalties and is a better player - can see him doing a Sarr-special somewhere in the next 3 games with a brace or treble return & kicking on from there, he's too good for Watford

In fairness, the lockdown happened immediately after that game & project restart absolutely killed Watford for the last 10 games

He also would have had 3 penalties in that spell but Deeney obviously took them

Sarr took Watford's last penalty so he *should* be on them now - will help him in these next 3 fixtures

      Romelu Lukaku vs Spurs

      Played : 9
      Goal : 1
      Assist : 2
      Won : 1
      Drawn : 4
      Lost : 4

Lukaku has played against Spurs for three different clubs now, but he has only ever managed one goal - and one win - from his nine meetings with the North London outfit, making for his worst record against any club he has faced seven or more times in his career.

Would mostly be Vs an excellent poch spurs while at everton and west brom, Chelsea is a different proposition and spurs these days are dreadful. Nuno has form for managing to be defensive and getting results but I can't see them stopping Chelsea

His career finishing rate vs XG is actually quite good (131 goals from 124 XG)

Spurs are 14th in the table on 7.1 XGc, they've benefitted from a lot of luck and poor finishing to have only conceded 3 goals

I'm firmly behind team Rom for that particular match-up
