FPL Gameweek 5 round-up: Sunday’s goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.6m) scored again for Manchester United as Said Benrahma (£6.4m) rewarded his owners with his first goal since Gameweek 2.

Neal Maupay (£6.5m) and Danny Welbeck (£6.0m) inspired Brighton and Hove Albion moved up to fourth after a 2-1 win over Leicester City, while Chelsea kept another clean sheet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of today’s games but in the meantime, our long-dormant Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

FPL TAKEAWAYS

  • Since making his second Manchester United debut in Gameweek 4, Cristiano Ronaldo has registered three goals, 13 goal attempts, 12 shots in the box, five big chances and 3.24 expected goals (xG), all league-leading totals. During that time, team-mate Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) has managed just one attempt in the box, though it did hit the post.
  • Following today’s game, Luke Shaw (£5.5m) ranks 30th amongst all defenders for FPL points with 18. Despite that, his 14 chances created is only bettered by Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.6m), Jack Grealish (£8.0m) and Raul Jimenez (£7.5m), while his average position (no 23) v West Ham United was as advanced as Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) on the opposite flank.

Manchester United’s average position map v West Ham United in Gameweek 5

  • Man Utd delivered 33 crosses into the box against West Ham, their highest total in a single league game so far this season, with Shaw responsible for 16 of them.
  • Benrahma’s deflected effort for West Ham opened the scoring at the London Stadium, his first goal since Gameweek 2. The Algerian now ranks second amongst all midfielders for FPL points, only behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.5m). Next up for the Hammers is a trip to Leeds United.
  • Brighton moved up to fourth in the Premier League table after a 2-1 victory over Leicester City, their fourth win of the season. Budget enabler Shane Duffy (£4.2m) supplied the assist for Maupay’s penalty, and has now provided 27 FPL points across his five starts.
  • It’s now three defeats in five matches for Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes in 2021/22. However, Jamie Vardy (10.4m) continues to produce, with three goals, one assist and five bonus points during that time.
  • It was a quiet afternoon for Spurs duo Harry Kane (£12.2m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m), as Chelsea restricted them to a combined four shots, with just one arriving in the box.
  • Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) made his fifth consecutive start today, as Ben Chilwell (£5.7m) still waits to play his first minute of Premier League football this season. Today’s assist for the Spaniard – his second attacking return of the campaign – means that he is now the top scoring defender in the game.

INJURIES AND BANS

The best goalkeepers for UEFA Champions League Fantasy

Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) missed out for Chelsea today, with Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.9m) replacing him in goal.

The Senegalese stopper was involved in a collision towards the end of Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Zenit on Tuesday, which meant he had trouble diving.

“Edou got a huge hit, we tried everything in the last days but he never felt fully comfortable in diving.” – Thomas Tuchel

Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) appeared to pick up a knock at the Amex Stadium. Despite not being taken off initially, he was finally withdrawn after 79 minutes, with Graham Potter providing an update after the match:

“He was desperate to play, the medical department were ok with it. He extended his knee a little bit. As the game starts to go on, the fatigue might be a problem, but he was desperate to go out. It was a decision for the medical department.”

Elsewhere, Son made a surprise return from injury and played the full 90 minutes for Spurs, as did team-mate Eric Dier (£4.6m).

However, the injuries sustained by Lucas Moura (£6.5m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) in the Europa Conference League kept them out.

After serving one-match bans in Gameweek 5, Japhet Tanganga (£4.6m) and Michail Antonio (£7.9m) will both now be available for their respective teams next weekend.

Duffy n Livra have saved me n many others during last 2-3 GWs. Feel like owning 5 first teamers in defense and gives us genuine rotation options.

Thoughts on how long they could feature and would you you ever sell for something like 442, even if they continue to feature ?

Have my eyes on Livra on my GW8 WC. Could easily end up playing 25+ games this season.

I'm benefitting from both too. Livramento is nailed in a Saints side that is becoming stronger defensively. I'd be happy to start him against most non-elite opponents.
Duffy is kind of living on borrowed time. He'll fade and be replaced at some point. For me, thanks to Liv, I can park him on my bench forever. If you want to ensure all your defenders start, he'll need to go at some point.

No one here knows for sure. My guess is so long as he keeps playing so well, he stays. But the first choice CBs once Lamptey is back should be Dunk, Webster and Veltman, imo.

Anyone see the penalty claims in the WHM/UTD game yesterday? What were your thoughts on them?

    1. WHM penalty claim in second half. Thought they should have had a penalty.

    2. Ronaldo first pen claim. Not for me. Ron was looking for it and was already falling before Coufal made contact.

    3. Ronaldo second pen claim. I thought this was a clear penalty although he had no chance of getting to the ball.

    1. Eleven Hag
      • 6 Years

Thought 3rd one was a pen, don't remember the first one

    2. CapK
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

      Think exactly the same

The soucek incident was totally mental - honestly had no idea what happened - was rumours of offside, but the flag stayed down and ref had no right to call it there if he thought so. That aside, the challenge on Soucek in the box was mad and had no idea how it went against him.

Agreed with the second - ronaldo ran into his leg and was looking for it.

      3rd was a pen 100%

    3. Pasqualinho
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

I would have given Ronaldo’s 2nd one as a pen, but not the first. But upon looking at the evidence for the second one in slo-mo it’s a more obvious dive than the first one. He goes in to the challenge dragging his right foot on the ground to enhance the fall and is virtually horizontal before the contact is made.

James is rotation risk and Benarahma was on the verge of benching I hear before yesterday's goal?

3 premiums don't look good tbh, too many sacrifices to be made for one extra premium that we may never captain

The choice of players is perfectly fine, but even without the rotation risk, I feel 3 premiums would restrict flexibility in making transfers

One advantage is you could easily hop on to another premium like Kane when they hit form

I was being a bit insincere… I know its limitations and it is very dependent on 6m mids holding some form. Least there is Gallagher who is emerging as another option but there is a plethora of 7.5 mids it’s locked out from getting.

    Duffy, Livramento, James

looked at this in depth last night. essentially I ended up comparing something like

      A) Ronaldo + Livramento + (Sissoko + williams)
      B) Bamford + Grealish + (Tierney + livramento)

Without the captaincy A doesnt outscore B imo, and the quality of the bench just leaves you massively exposed.

Was fully convinced initially I'll rotate between Ronaldo and Lukaku depending on fixtures as both are flat track bullies, but having a little doubt lately if I should pick both. Though still leaning towards the former idea. Gonna be my most pressing issue in GW8 WC.

thats assuming the rest of your team doesnt have a surprise benching or injury or positive covid test or whatever. in reality you probably end up playing Duffy and Livra every week (Duffy isnt exactly secure either) and probably also Sissoko type player as well.

Bud that can happen to any team. It won't be happening every week. It just seems like you're justifying not doing this strategy because u don't have it or can't afford it.

    Thoughts on the below?

For GW6: Keep Bruno, keep FT, (c) Salah
For GW7: Scarlet Bruno Shaw to Kaku (c) 4.5 Rudi -4
    For GW8: Greenwood to Grealish

Not the best GW, got only 56 points( my worst so far this season) and my first red arrow. Over all is good still, but still dropped quite a lot places in overall and my mini leagues as well.

58 here, forgot to change captaincy from Kaku ( from previous week), 10 points down the drain.

I didn't trust my initially thoughts, went with more template solution. Good have gotten 9 points more had I not done that.

So very annoyed I opted for Traore over Sarr. Admit my mistake and transfer Sarr in this week with my FT?

Plan is to WC in GW8 so fixtures give me:

    Sarr: NEW, lee
    Traore: sou, NEW

Ideally wanted to roll transfer this week so I had 2 for GW7 to have some punts before the WC but NEW, lee look there for the taking right now.

Traore hit the woodwork and should of had one assist. Fine margins. Also factor in that Norwich are really bad.

Newcastle and Leeds both bottom of xGC which is leaning me that way. Southampton just stopped City scoring at the Etihad.

And Wolves near the top of xG 😉

Saints will play different against Wolves imo. Your call and could pay off well.

This is true, lets hope he gets something then. Southampton dont seem to play that highline anymore which is a shame..

I've made wrong calls every week so far, but I would not do that.
Had Sarr for the first 4 GW's, then I got rid on WC, and look what he did to me 😀
He is a potent player and should return against NEW and/or leeds on paper, but Watford has not look that great offensively in my opinion.
It was more the fact, that Sarr played Norwich, than Watford being good offensively. I think he will outscore Traoré by 4 points over the next 2 though, but I would rather own and play Rüdiger/James/Azpi/AC/Alonso/Silva from GW 7 week in and week out than relying on Sarr and Watford.

Yeah I agree, however if you look at who Sarr has next its another pair of very poor defensive teams. Watford might not be playing great football but when the oppo allows it Sarr looks the man.

Traore up against Livramento will be a tough battle. But I fancy him to do the business against Newcastle.

Been between them and finally picked Sarr so pretty happy. Either way, next two looking great also for Sarr, he should get something.

Keep traore. He is due and sarr scored his goals for next 5-6 week. Nothing but chasing points

Impossible to know how that will pan out over two gameweeks - it's way too small a sample size with too much variance

But over the longer term Sarr is the real deal - he is an actual footballer who has almost as much pace & strength as Traore, but has a serious football brain to utilise them & finishing skills that are light years better (he is an incredibly good finisher overall - you can see this on the eye test from the way he times his runs & poaches goals, but also check out his career goals scored vs XG - waaaay above the average).

Crucially - when Watford eventually get a penalty he should also be stepping up to take it - which will be when the penny really drops with him for a lot of folks from an FPL perspective

Watch his second half here against Liverpool again here ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwSe1x3uVk0 ) - the signs were there in the first half the way he was shrugging off Fabinho, but the two finishes when they came were just sheer class, and he could have had four

Lockdown kicked in straight after this & destroyed Watford, but he kept doing this in the championship last year - and probably won’t be at Watford much longer, so enjoy him while he's there

He's only 5% owned now, but if he stays injury free you can bet he'll be 20/25% + owned by end of the season

But again, over two gameweeks, Traore has the raw physical attributes to smash, but he'll need good luck to override his poor decision making and lack of composure... whereas Sarr can blank, but will need bad luck to override his incredible timing & finishing ability along with his physical power

Longer term it isn't even a question between them, Sarr is so much better

Thanks for such a detailed response mate, very much appreciated.

I am slightly leaning towards bringing Sarr in for the next two, simply because of the above and the opponents poor defensive quality.

Frustrating as it goes against my initial plan but I guess we need to stay agile in this game.
