Cristiano Ronaldo scores the only goal of the game as Portugal rack up their third straight win to secure a place in the EURO 2012 semi-finals, with a showdown against Spain or France now awaiting Paulo Bento’s men. A 12 point armband haul leaves Fantasy managers with a dilemma ahead of Germanyโ€™s game against Greece this evening, though โ€“ with Joachim Lowโ€™s side expected to chalk up a comfortable victory, many are likely to gamble for enhanced returns.

Portugal 1 Czech Republic 0
Paulo Bento named the same XI that started all three group games yesterday evening. The 1-0 win earned Portugal their first clean sheet of the tournament and, with every member of the back-four picking up an extra point thanks to the recovered balls rule, Fantasy owners of the likes of Pepe and Fabio Coentrao benefitted from a seven point return. Pepe is now tied with Ronaldo as top scoring player for Portugal with 20 points, while Joao Pereira has proven to be the best value of Bentoโ€™s players to date โ€“ the 6.0 priced right-back has now accrued 17 points.

Joao Moutinho picked up his second assist in four games after supplying the cross for Ronaldoโ€™s match-winner, though it was Raul Meireles who was his sideโ€™s key creator; the Chelsea midfielder provided four goalscoring opportunities. Helder Postigaโ€™s tournament may well be over after the forward was stretchered off with what looked like a hamstring injury โ€“ he left the proceedings on 40 minutes having failed to manage a single attempt, with 7.4 priced Hugo Almeida set to be handed the lone striker role in Bentoโ€™s 4-3-3 for the semi-final on Wednesday June 27.

Cristiano Ronaldo has an incredible 82% of the votes in the Captain Poll after his brace against Holland in the previous match and justified our faith with another outstanding attacking display. The Real Madrid man had eight attempts over the 90 minutes (Nani had three in comparison) and, in addition to finding the net, also hit the woodwork twice for the second game in succession.

For the Czech Republic, Michal Bilek made a single alteration from the side that saw off Poland in their final Group A match. With first-choice playmaker Tomas Rosicky still unavailable due to an Achilles problem, Bilek dropped Daniel Kolar and handed Vladimir Darida a start in โ€œthe holeโ€ behind Milan Baros.

Mid-price midfielders Petr Jiracek and Vaclav Pilar had received plenty of investment prior to the match after bagging two goals apiece in the group stages but as an attacking force the Czechs were virtually non-existent and managed a mere two efforts over the entire match โ€“ wary of their opponentsโ€™ pace on the counter, they rarely committed many men forward and were content to sit back and frustrate. The tactic ultimately proved their undoing, with popular picks such as Petr Cech (26.8%), Pilar (27.4%) and Theodor Gebre Selassie (19.6%) all exiting the competition after a thoroughly insipid display.

copy pasted from a german media site

When Miroslav Klose is on the pitch, Oezil’s influence is greater as the two can link up. Oezil’s decreased influence in the side is a result of Gomez’s starting position. Gomez is a true finisher; he has also grown into a team player. However, his passing and harrying isn’t quite like Klose’s. Loew has to make a choice now: he can either go with the finisher or go with the hard-working legend.

Keeping these things in mind, I think this will be the starting line-up:

    Manuel Neuer

Jerome Boateng- Holger Badstuber- Mats Hummels- Philipp Lahm

    Bastian Schweinsteiger- Sami Khedira

Thomas Mueller- Mesut Oezil- Lukas Podolski

    Mario Gomez”

At the end of the day, playing Gomez has worked for them so far, and I feel the greeks are going to pack the defence so lowe will want a cool head infront of goal to make sure when they get a chance, they'll score aka Gomez.

Mario Balotelli is expected to return to the starting XI for the England game, but Thiago Motta is an Italian doubt.

Reports today are claiming that he will replace Antonio Di Natale from the start against the English outfit.

Doubts over the presence of Thiago Motta revolve around his fitness given that the midfielder is struggling with muscle fatigue.

Should he not pass a fitness test then Prandelli will consider using Bologna’s Alessandro Diamanti, Riccardo Montolivo or Antonio Nocerino – both of Milan.

In terms of formation, Prandelli currently favours the 4-3-1-2 ahead of the 3-5-2 he used in the 1-1 draws with Spain and Croatia.

Ironically, with recovered balls a factor in the Maccy D game, defensive midfielders actually have value.

      I think I'm going 12 + 3 (1 goal, 1 def, 1 mid) - I think the chance for a sub is probably worth the 1-2 mill.

Whilst you've got to decide today if you're going to go with 4's throughout there's a 4.4 Portuguese def so you could hold off making a decision and use him as a bench filler for an .4

Moved up to 38th in the world, and had Ronaldo (C) last night. I have Muller and Gomez tonight. I'm winning my mini leagues by about 60 points, but I want to see if I can push for top 10.

    Do I
    A) Stick with Ronaldo
    B) Take a slight risk and switch to Gomez
    C) Take a big risk which could pay off massively and make Muller captain?

    Thanks!

I see a lot of requests for stay on Ronaldo as captain or twist to another player (mostly Gomez)...

IMO, one should twist... Come on, one of your captain choices should be able to score a goal and get the same points as Ronaldo...

If you do not trust any of your other players, either you didnt build a good team or you lack confidence...

what's the point in sticking with 6pts anyways

let's say that you C mf player who pick up a CS and 5rb(you loose only 2 pts in total)+there is a possibility that he can ship in with goal or assist as well

It's not that simple. I striker could score and get a yellow(or red card) and end up on 8pts, 4 less then Cr7. Then you HAVE to twist on day 3/4 event hough you might not have great (c)choices.

ML leads and what your rivals might be doing could also effect your decision.

Not to mention the rumour Gomez might be replaced by Klose....
