Cristiano Ronaldo scores the only goal of the game as Portugal rack up their third straight win to secure a place in the EURO 2012 semi-finals, with a showdown against Spain or France now awaiting Paulo Bento’s men. A 12 point armband haul leaves Fantasy managers with a dilemma ahead of Germany’s game against Greece this evening, though – with Joachim Low’s side expected to chalk up a comfortable victory, many are likely to gamble for enhanced returns.

Portugal 1 Czech Republic 0
Paulo Bento named the same XI that started all three group games yesterday evening. The 1-0 win earned Portugal their first clean sheet of the tournament and, with every member of the back-four picking up an extra point thanks to the recovered balls rule, Fantasy owners of the likes of Pepe and Fabio Coentrao benefitted from a seven point return. Pepe is now tied with Ronaldo as top scoring player for Portugal with 20 points, while Joao Pereira has proven to be the best value of Bento’s players to date – the 6.0 priced right-back has now accrued 17 points.

Joao Moutinho picked up his second assist in four games after supplying the cross for Ronaldo’s match-winner, though it was Raul Meireles who was his side’s key creator; the Chelsea midfielder provided four goalscoring opportunities. Helder Postiga’s tournament may well be over after the forward was stretchered off with what looked like a hamstring injury – he left the proceedings on 40 minutes having failed to manage a single attempt, with 7.4 priced Hugo Almeida set to be handed the lone striker role in Bento’s 4-3-3 for the semi-final on Wednesday June 27.

Cristiano Ronaldo has an incredible 82% of the votes in the Captain Poll after his brace against Holland in the previous match and justified our faith with another outstanding attacking display. The Real Madrid man had eight attempts over the 90 minutes (Nani had three in comparison) and, in addition to finding the net, also hit the woodwork twice for the second game in succession.

For the Czech Republic, Michal Bilek made a single alteration from the side that saw off Poland in their final Group A match. With first-choice playmaker Tomas Rosicky still unavailable due to an Achilles problem, Bilek dropped Daniel Kolar and handed Vladimir Darida a start in “the hole” behind Milan Baros.

Mid-price midfielders Petr Jiracek and Vaclav Pilar had received plenty of investment prior to the match after bagging two goals apiece in the group stages but as an attacking force the Czechs were virtually non-existent and managed a mere two efforts over the entire match – wary of their opponents’ pace on the counter, they rarely committed many men forward and were content to sit back and frustrate. The tactic ultimately proved their undoing, with popular picks such as Petr Cech (26.8%), Pilar (27.4%) and Theodor Gebre Selassie (19.6%) all exiting the competition after a thoroughly insipid display.

So if Gomez scores big, you will then change your captain to Silva from Ronaldo?

Not sure I see the logic there. If you're not moving it to Gomez (assuming he starts), I can't see how you can move it to Silva, personally.

all about the gamble see greece holding germany to 1 or two goals so maybe gomez gets 20 pts but il have ten of them then all i need is a goal and assist off silva to break even in a game i see spain winning 4 -1 or something so silva could be the best gamble long term

If that's the gamble, you're losing out.

If you think Spain are to win 4-1 anyway, then you're committed to changing to Silva. If you're committed to changing to Silva, you might as well change to Gomez first.

You're talking about a goal and assist to break even for Silva, I think that's easier said than done for starters, and in your analogy, that's only to break even!!

Haha ok, I'm not doubting it anyway, but if you're set on changing to Silva from Ronaldo, then you're getting a free punt on Gomez but you feel free to stick to your plan.

                  There's a guy who's living in fear.

Captain Gomez, sit back, enjoy the game knowing you've got Silva in reserve if he doesn't fire.

              That makes no sense!

              You're painting two scenarios:

Scenario A: Gomez fails to perform against Greece, you leave the captaincy on Ronaldo despite the fact you believe Silva will score big against France.

Scenario B: Gomez scores twice against Greece, you switch the captaincy from Ronaldo to Silva.

Either you believe Silva will score more than Ronaldo already has or you don't. Gomez's performance is completely unrelated.

Hec is right - if you think Silva is going to get more points than Ronaldo then you should be committed to the switch in which case the Gomez captaincy is a free punt.

              I'm confused 😕

I'd have thought that no Mexes would actually be an advantage for France. Koscielny is a better centre back, and tends to excel in matches where the ball is mainly played on the floor, as tomorrow's game inevitably will be.

If I could put money on both Ozil and Gomez not completing 90 minutes tonight, I would.

Very worried about Germany being 2-0 up after 60 minutes and then the likes of Klose, Reus, Schurrle and Gotze being given some gametime.

Good point there. Three motivations for Germany - rest for their best players, spreading the minutes to keep everyone happy, and getting subs match ready.

I think there's too much riding on the match both competitively and politically to be too risky with the subs though.

Captains for days 3 and 4 are Torres/Iniesta.... /Alba? and Pirlo.

I take it you wouldn't consider Alba for the captaincy, and you would only captain Torres if he starts?

I think defenders and goalkeepers are very worthy captain options, especially later on in the tournament.

A defender/goalkeeper that keeps a clean sheet will invariably outscore a striker who scores one goal.

You're right, but counterbalancing that, if the match goes to extra-time you have 30 more minutes for defenders to lose the clean sheet (whereas that's 30 more minutes for attacking players to score).

Even if he starts? Captaining him is based on the pattern we've seen so far - you can't predict which Spanish midfielder is going to get points. But whoever plays center-forward seems to have the best chance. Getting all the supply. It's a punt that plays the percentages... in theory

Is it worth taking a flyer on a German defenseman or on Neuer today? Unless there's a goal or an assist, it's basically taking a risk of getting a clean sheet in order to gain 2 points more than CR7

As Jamsiep above has just said Disco, yes it is. But I would prefer Defs to GK's, simply for the hopeful jammy goal threat and RB extras. Seriously considering CR7 to Hummels this evening, although Gomez remains compelling.

Yeah, it would take Neuer making 3 saves for him to get the RB point that the defenders can get, and I don't see Greece getting 3 shots on target. I have Gomez as well, but can really see this one ending 1 - 0 so probably just going to leave it on CR7 for at least one more day

If you captain a clean sheet you will only match Ronaldo's score. Not much point doing that. There is the recovered ball's for defenders but there are also yellow cards to cancel that out.

Can I change back and forth with my subs as long as they haven't played? I have 3 germans on the bench, do I need to bring out someone who has played to use ie. Silva later? Or can I sub for example Silva out for Gomez and sub SIlva in again before he plays?

I think they're making a mistake. That's 40-50k of home supporters they're missing, plus maybe 6k-8k away fans for home games against Rangers. And with no serious competition to Celtic, TV rights rates will plunge from already low levels. Seems a short-sighted view, unless I'm reading this completely wrongly.

The German tabloid Bild is now also saying that Klose will start tonight.

Conclusion: Still nothing definite, but Gómez owners shouldn't confirm him as captain until the line-ups are out.

Bild stir it up sometimes with daft transfer rumours à la Daily Mail, but they used to have good connections to Bayern Munich players and DFB officials (although that's less the case now).

Their reporters were watching the training sessions yesterday in which Gómez and Klose alternated in leading the line. I've not seen a source whom I trust 100% on this one yet though.

Cheers for the news PBJ aka "our Germany correspondent". Training with both center-forwards would be natural wouldn't it if one is regarded as the impact sub if they can't score, and they are playing a team renowned for defending?

I would not be surprised, Klose has had plenty of time now to get to almost full fitness and it would be an easy game to get him going. I wonder if this is what Loew was referring to about having confidence in his team selection.

I don't know if it's been confirmed in the English press but I read on the U-Bahn this morning that Jogi Löw has said he will recall Boateng and that Bender will be on the bench again!

They have TVs on the underground trains and it's basically a loop with news, weather, entertainment and sports news.

I didn't read it word for word but the apparently Jogi said that Bender 'muss wieder auf die Bank' (in inverted commas).

was just about to ask about that. It makes no sense, if Greece saw that team it'd give them a major boost IMO. Creates the impression the Germans think they only have to turn up to win. Thankfully my (c) is still on Ronaldo, if Gomez does start I'll switch him in.

I could easily make a case for taking out Müller (off-form) *or* Podolski (off-form, Schürrle on form) *or* Gómez (Klose is better suited to breaking down a stubborn defence).

It's doing all three changes together that would be brave.

I don't know how you make that assessment of Muller. You're clearly thinking in terms of goals scored.

He has been asked by Low to do a job out wide for Germany, when actually he is much more natural centrally. Nevertheless, he puts his head down and does an effective job out there for the team.

That might not make him a good fantasy pick, I'll concede that, but saying he has 'consistently failed' is lol bad.

No, I'm thinking in terms of games that I've watched. It's not necessarily his fault that things didn't work out this season at Bayern, and I'm not faulting his workrate, but he's lost the creativity and unpredictability that Löw might be looking for in this match. Playing Reus would be a gamble, but not a reckless one.

I'm not that interested in Fantasy Football, by the way, and won't be participating next season.

how likely is it that Bild are way wide of the mark. Surely a guy who has scored 3 goals despite doing very little should stay. Perhaps bringing in Reus and or Schrule will be the key to breaking them down, creating the space and chances for Gomez with pace and movement in behind. As we have seen, he very rarely needs more than 1 chance to score

Yes, they're a tabloid, and yes, they play fast and loose with the truth sometimes, but Bild are highly unlikely to go with a story as big as this without some foundation. They'll be crucified by the other German media if they're wrong.

This doesn't mean that their source is accurate, or that the story is true, but they will have a source for this.

Freshy, so you sold Pilar @ £5.2m for a Greek £4.0m yes? Accept losing the 3 pts because you'll probably do better from other playing players?

Hiya everyone im after a bit of guidance if poss the brain doesn't seem to be functioning very well today, regarding strategy of transfers I understand in order to get the maximum out of your team you need to take forward a few cheapies, I tried to prepare for this by taking Limbersky and Manos into this round with me, along with the cheap Greek goalie of course, question is will I be needing to add another cheap Greek to this lot or have I got enough cheap coverage, any suggestions most welcome (all providing Germany win of course)

    Patricio/Tzorvas
    Hummels/Boateng/Alba/Lescott/Limbersky
    Pirlo/Gerrard/Scwine/Pilar/Manos
    Torres/Cr7/Gomez

One really needs a squad of 12 for a bit of wriggle room for the semis I would have thought.

I don't see him getting many recovered balls with the Greeks hardly attacking so I can see a max of 6 points for him. If you've got the armband on CR7 then maybe stick. I already changed mine to Gomez so can't change back and that's why I'm plumping for Lahm now if Gomez doesn't start.

aye. as a gomez owner and someone who's trebled on german defence, no gomez start means i'm cappin hummels. his goalscoring rate seems impressive for a defender and he looks a wonderful player

Remember how Gomez was going to be rested v the Danes and Klose was getting a chance.

Gomez starts. I'd wager €100 willingly against anyone who would beg to differ.

Ummm.. so if what PB says is true cant really trust the German frontline.. Neither can we trust the spain frontline.. so if that's gonna be the final it may be time to consider two non playin 4.5,5 strikers upfront and pack midfield and defense.. boy are we in trouble

I wonder if everyone here always gives their honest opinion, or if they sometimes advise people to do what they wouldnt fo themselves, in an attempt to increase their own world ranking...

On that note, I have a feeling Gomez will get sent off tonight, so if you captained Nani (1 point), id definately stick!

why you all cry over Gomez anyways??

i am his owner myself but i wanna see good match at euro

and Schürrle Klose Reus lineup looks fantastic

Podolski and Muller are in not so good form

i bet that you never see likes of Schrulle and Reus playing so you decided to complain

both are young ,talented and fantastic players

also Ozil is way more effective when he play with Klose cause unlike Gomez(who dont move whole match) Klose at least try something

it could be brilliant taktic by low to suprise Greece defence

i hope this rummors are true!

i'd agree about the Reus and Schurle bit.. muller and pod been playin badly and those 2 are class.. HOWEVER.. droppin your inform striker who can put the ball in the back of the net after already makin those 2 changes is madness.. cant see klose playin
