FPL Gameweek 7 round-up: Sunday’s goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.0m) scored on his return to Leicester City’s starting XI, as Son Heung-min (£10.0m) registered his third double-digit haul of the season in a much-needed victory for Tottenham Hotspur.

Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) inspired Brentford continued their impressive start, while Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) strengthened his perma-captain status with a goal, assist and maximum bonus.

However, it was a day to forget for those who handed Michail Antonio (£8.0m) the armband, as the Jamaican forward returned just two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Points.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of today’s games but in the meantime, our long-dormant Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

FPL TAKEAWAYS

  • On his first Premier League start of the season, 2020/21 Fantasy favourite Kelechi Iheanacho bagged a goal, maximum bonus and nine FPL points. The Nigerian international registered 12 Premier League goals and two assists in just 1452 minutes last term. As a result, he ranked top amongst all forwards per 90 minutes for goals and joint-fourth for expected goal involvement (xGI). Should he now nail down a spot in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI, he would instantly become an excellent option for our frontlines, ahead of games against Manchester United (h), Brentford (a) and Arsenal (h) after the international break.
  • As for Jamie Vardy (£10.4m), the veteran forward now tops the Premier League scoring charts having netted his sixth goal of the campaign at Selhurst Park. He has blanked in just two of his seven appearances in 2021/22, but despite that, has suffered a £0.1m price drop since the start of the season. Interestingly, Vardy touched the ball just 10 times against Crystal Palace this afternoon, compared to the more involved Iheanacho (32), who regularly dropped deeper to link play in Brendan Rodgers’ 4-2-3-1 formation.
  • Following today’s 2-2 draw, Patrick Vieira’s Eagles remain unbeaten at home, despite a testing run which has included games against Brentford, Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Hove Albion, and of course, Leicester City. The 8.3% owned Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) failed to return but attempted four shots, while Michail Olise (£5.4m) arrived off the bench and scored his first Premier League goal within nine minutes of coming on. He also took on a share of set-pieces.
  • Son Heung-min’s third double-digit haul of the season – via two assists and two bonus points – ensured a big win for Nuno Espirito Santo and Tottenham Hotspur against Aston Villa. The South Korean international was the most advanced Spurs’ player on the day, and was a little unfortunate not to score, as he racked up five goal attempts, three shots in the box and 10 penalty box touches.
  • As for their opponents, Aston Villa, Dean Smith lined his troops up in a 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 formation for the fourth-successive Premier League match. Despite a disappointing loss, there were positives, as differential Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) opened his 2021/22 account. The dynamic between the England international and Danny Ings (£7.9m) is one to keep an eye on ahead of Gameweek 11, when Villa take on Southampton (a), Brighton (h) and Crystal Palace (a). Today, Watkins was the more advanced, and led his team-mate for goal attempts and shots in the box.
  • A dramatic late winner by Yoane Wissa (£5.9m) – his second goal in just 20 minutes of pitch time during the last two Gameweeks – at the London Stadium means that Brentford are now up to 7th in the Premier League table. Bryan Mbeumo was also on the scoresheet, but could have had more, having missed a couple of good early chances for the Bees’. Given that he has hit the woodwork a massive four times already this season, owners may still feel a little short-changed. Next up for Brentford is a testing encounter with Chelsea (h), before an appealing run of fixtures between Gameweeks 9 and 16, when their assets will surely be subject to huge interest.
  • Michail Antonio served up just his second blank of the season on Sunday, as Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) scored West Ham’s only goal of the game against Brentford. For Bowen, it was his third attacking return since Gameweek 5, and as a result, he has now outscored his more popular team-mate – Said Benrahma (£6.6m) – by 17 FPL points to 15 during that time.
  • An entertaining clash between Liverpool and Man City at Anfield ended in a 2-2 draw, with Mohamed Salah delivering yet another double-digit haul via a goal,  assist and maximum bonus. The Egyptian is the top-scoring player in FPL with a whopping 70 points, at least 21 more than any other player. Team-mate Sadio Mane (£11.9m) was also on the scoresheet, with his fourth goal in his last six Premier League appearances.
  • For Pep Guardiola’s side, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) and Phil Foden (£7.9m) both scored and are intriguing differentials ahead of Burnley (h), Brighton (a) and Crystal Palace (h). The Belgian attempted four shots in the box in Gameweek 7, with Foden registering two, while they both shared corner-taking duties with Jack Grealish (£8.0m).

Manchester City’s average position map v Liverpool in Gameweek 7

INJURY WATCH

Despite receiving lengthy treatment during the second-half at Selhurst Park, Jamie Vardy recovered and saw out the game.

However, Brentford weren’t quite so fortunate.

The Bees’ lost Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m) to a hamstring injury during the week, while Vitaly Janelt (£5.0m) took a knock (thigh) during the warm up and missed out despite being named in the starting XI.

Things then got worse as Shandon Baptiste (£5.0m) was forced off with a suspected dislocated shoulder in the first-half.

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 7

The 5.1% owned Harry Kane (£12.1m) ended Gameweek 7 with six shots, a total no other player could improve upon. Despite that, the England captain blanked again, those his performance was more encouraging ahead of his team’s trip to Newcastle United after the international break.

Kevin De Bruyne also features highly, as does Said Benrahma, though only one of the latter’s five attempts arrived inside the penalty box.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) was this week’s biggest non-pen xG underachiever, with a -0.77 total

Son Heung-min also appears on the list, along with team-mates Kane and Giovani Lo Celso (£5.9m).

What happened with Spurs today? Has Nuno got bored of playing defensive football? Son's numbers were v impressive, and I imagine most were only put off getting him in because of Spurs' defensive playstyle.

It was very very obvious that Dele Alli was failing to connect defence with attack. Without him the team was far more coherent.

Ohhh wasn’t gonna do this so soon but I may as well, good time as any.

Started off all guns blazing like many, but I’m noticing sooner now rather than later when my team is looking to start being in trouble.
Not averse to hits as I took a -8 for this latest GW

    Sanchez
    Alonso - Tierney - Rudiger
    Benrahma - Sarr - Salah - Raphinha - Allan
    Ronaldo - Lukaku

Already spurned my WC after 1st IB, but do have 1FT and 3 mill in the bank.

Sarr maybe looking like an issue.
Ronaldo MAY have to go soon’ish as will Alonso
Also TAA should make a return, and Antonio!
Eurgh, I feel it’s a mess all of a sudden and slipped down to 774k! Yikes.

Still near top of my ML’s, Just anything glaringly obvious to start sorting here?
    No need to panic yet?

if anything that we learned from the recent gw is to have a very decent bench.
i got Duffy coming in for TAA but Alonso subbed in by Williams who did not played.

i will plan to strengthen my bench in upcoming weeks, with Williams to White.
      my current def are TAA-Alonso-Livra-Duffy-Williams

for your team, i will reassess on Sarr, Allan and Scarlett. Williams of course.

    is this WC defender template?

    TAA - Rudiger - Cancelo - Duffy - Livramento

I want to have Son in my midfield so cannot afford another MCI/CHE def to Duffy/Livra

about as template as you can get. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Some will also have 2 x Chelsea and 2 x City.

I was initially leaning towards this but there's a lot of value in having Duffy and Livra as 4th and 5th defenders. This gameweek has shown their value coming in from the bench

That’s my defence too. I don’t like Rudiger being there though as he’s not attacking enough. I actually just brought Son with a knee-jerk too.

that is very decent DEF is you can afford.
i would say Duffy/Livra must stay as cost enabler.
who is your FWD? i think if you only choose either Luk/Ron, Son is possible to slot in alongside Salah with that DEF lines.

    Salah, Raphinha, Gray.
    Jimenez, Anto, Lukaku.
    Bachmann, Benrahma, Bissouma, Tsimikas.
    0.2m ITB, -4 taken already.

    Antonio – Hwang – CR7

I got Christensen last week too but in addition to Rudiger as expected the odd benching for the former. Perhaps you could do similar and transfer Ayling to Rudiger for some more assured starts in the Chelsea defence.

I’d do the Son move if you want.
You’ll have 3 starting defenders assuming one of TAA, Christensen or Ayling plays and I think that one would for sure.

Son is the value move to me.

      A good explanation here

But I wouldn't go thinking about the Ranieri at Leicester; more recent was his stint at Fulham where he won 3 in 17 before being sacked - and Fulham relegated.

No real issue but killing time. Any longer term thoughts on this-

    Sanchez
    Rudiger Christensen Dias
    Gray Salah Raphina Jota
    Lukaku Jiminez Antonio

Steele White Livaramento Gilmor 1FT 2.6M ITB

Plan for next GW is Chrsitensen to TAA if fit or maybe Cancello
Longer term perhaps Jiminez down to Toney ( maybe the other WOL forward), then upgrade Gray to someone like Saka or change Jota

    See anything better/ more interesting?

I'd only suggest if you're wildcarding soon, you could freshen up your goalkeeper(s). I got Sanchez from the start due to Brighton's opening fixtures. They've done great but are moving into a tricky patch, and I'm preparing to move Sanchez on.

Bit off topic but since it's the IB, why not. I've noticed that my team always seems to under perform over the crazy Christmas period so looking for some advice on how to better navigate it.... can't completely put my finger on why this tends to happen to me but I do have quite an aggressive style of play so maybe I'm more likely to be affected by the high levels of rotation than others. Do any of you approach the festive period any differently to the rest of the season?

Well done for nabbing the cash out of my grubby hands! 😉

I don't have any strategy as such, but I'm mindful of the extra rotation in an intense period. Expecting key players to be rested, you need a strong bench.

Mind you, there's the additional factor this time of losing the Africans immediately afterwards, so maybe losing Salah a GW early might be an option. I haven't looked into the dates or games yet.

i have to say, one of each is the risk-averse approach and most sensible, might end up with this if TAA fit, granted I've stuck with White over Duffy cause I've had him since the start and give me 3/4 CS of late.

It also depends on your team structure. If you want to play 4 at the back, a double up of Royal or Sky blue makes sense.

If you prefer 352, or even 343, then it doesn't...

They say a week is a long time in football....

Last week I was pretty sure I'd go Lukaku & CR7 up top on my WC, but after this weekend I'm seriously considering the option Vardy, Jimenez, Toney (from GW10).

Yep, pretty good point G. Two weeks of tinkering to do, but I've watched a lot of games the last few weeks (still in lockdown in Sydney) and Lukaku / CHE look tired, and Werner is always gonna try and nick in before Kaku.

Toney looks dangerous and a menace against all teams.

      Vardy is sharp, focused.

Jimenez looks like he is getting back to form and sharpness too.....

Little to much money in D for my liking. Foden will be in and out. Midfield is a little thin.

        If I was w-cing, I'd have a D of:

White, Rudiger, TAA, Cancelo and Livramento.

    Ronaldo | Lukaku

Although one of your weakest players to Mbeumo is a good move i would look at Sarr out instead, gives a little extra cash which is handy if your persisting with the big two up top.

Yes, I would most likely be trading Sarr out just after this per my current plans.
Definitely do not want him from gw12 onwards, however, I think Everton, Southampton & Arsenal are favourable enough.

Watford are pretty poor, yes Sarr is the standout option. They play Liverpool this week, Everton away is a really tough game for Watford, then fair enough The Saints at home but then Arsenal away which is a hard fixture for Watford.

Obviously, they can evolve and change and is situation-dependent but I do like to play for the fixtures.
My last 3 trades of Rudiger, Ramsdale and Cancelo were all planned 3 weeks ago, I just got them a slightly different way. Trent injury made the last move slightly different albeit possibly easier.

I personally would try and find the $ for Cancelo now having seen your team.

My question would be, do you need 8 attacking options?
I would say no. If you want to rest a Gray/ESR/etc. then just play a 4atb with two of White/Duffy/Livramento.

So limited, eventhough can't see him losing his place in the next few after scoring twice last game with Adama and Podence baing a bit meh. Apparently, he was good in the Bundes as well. His connection with Jim reminds me of Kane and son, hopefully we will get something like it.

Well jiminez is nailed af so the other options for the 2 wing positions really are Adama, Trincao, Podence and Hwang. None of them are 'goal scorers' as such, they are more creators. Hwang is the only one there with a proper eye for goal so I think he is pretty secure minutes wise now.

Yeah looks fine for now especially because they've been struggling to score goals. Trincao looks to be a very good player technically speaking but as you mentionned he is not that good of a finisher, and Adama might get the nod when they're playing against teams they would counter. Might be something like Hwayng Jim in most games and then one of Trincao/Adama, but what does it mean for Podence

I liked what I saw on MoTD, reminds me a bit of Son & Kane.

Hwang is very quick and Jimenez is quite a clever player and dropping a bit deeper, I think defences will struggle to pick them both up

One will get 4 PL games
And 1 gets 2 champions League + 1 carabao cup...
Think Alonso might get the premier League ones..

Tough to predict, pick someone and hope for best every week.

I think it will be James/Azpi and Alonso vs Brentford. Hudson and Chilwell vs Malmo.

Makes more sense to start Chilwell v Brentford and Alonso in the CL. Chilwell is going to be well retsed because of no International duties while alonso while alonso is playing for spain

    3. bench boost for every gamew…

If Chilwell is up to speed both physically and mentally there not really a competition.
