Raphinha and Marcal injury news as £4.5m FPL forward Gelhardt stars

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers.

For a summary in brief of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here.

Leeds United 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Rodrigo (£6.3m) | Hwang Hee-chan (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Joe Gelhardt (£4.5m) | Raul Jimenez (£7.6m)
  • Bonus: Rodrigo x3, Hwang x2, Stuart Dallas (£5.3m) x1

RAPHINHA AND MARCAL INJURY UPDATES

FPL Gameweek 9 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 7

Raphinha (£6.7m) is an early injury concern for Leeds United’s plum-looking Gameweek 10 clash against Norwich City, having limped out of the Whites’ draw with Wolves.

The Brazilian was seen on crutches and wearing a protective boot in the aftermath of that game, with Marcelo Bielsa unable to offer us much after full-time.

“He received a knock, we don’t know the extent or gravity of the injury.” – Marcelo Bielsa on Raphinha

There was at least a more positive update from the player himself, who said he was “fine” in comments posted on social media. We should have a bonus press conference from Bielsa on Monday ahead of their EFL Cup clash with Arsenal, so we may hear more news on the Brazilian way in advance of next Saturday’s FPL deadline.

Kalvin Phillips (£4.8m) was back on the bench at Elland Road, meanwhile, but the 7.0%-owned Marcal (£4.6m) missed the game for the visitors, even if his calf injury doesn’t sound serious and he could be back for Gameweek 10.

AIT-NOURI ADVANCES

Coming in for Marcal was Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.3m), one of the early pre-season bandwagons that had long been forgotten about by the time Gameweek 1 kicked off.

Marcal had started all of Wolves’ first eight league matches at left wing-back but has flattered to deceive for some time, particularly in possession.

Bruno Lage’s change in that position at Elland Road was enforced by the Brazilian’s injury so it’ll be interesting to see who the Wolves boss plumps for against Everton next Monday, with the cut-price Ait-Nouri impressing at times yesterday.

The average position map below shows just how more advanced the young defender was compared to Nelson Semedo (£4.9m, number 22), with Ait-Nouri’s total of 21 final-third touches unbeaten by any of his teammates and three times more than Semedo racked up.

£4.5m GELHARDT MAKES HIS MARK

Leeds fans will know all about Joe Gelhardt (£4.5m) from his exceptional displays for the under-23s and he has finally got his chance in the Premier League in the last two Gameweeks, with his latest second-half cameo on Saturday showcasing his talents.

Racking up an eye-catching 11 penalty box touches in under half an hour (as many as any forward in Gameweek 9), he twice went close with rising efforts from inside the Wolves box before a weaving run brought about the stoppage-time penalty that Rodrigo (£6.3m) despatched in the absence of the injured Patrick Bamford (£7.8m) and the substituted Mateusz Klich (£5.5m).

The length of Bamford’s absence will likely determine how much game-time he gets but the Whites looked better with Rodrigo dropping deeper behind Gelhardt in the closing stages.

“In the initial minutes of the 30 that he played, he had very few contacts with the ball. But in the final 15 minutes, he got the penalty and he had options to score one or perhaps two goals. And I have the impression that him alongside Rodrigo in the second half created enough chances to win the game.” – Marcelo Bielsa on Joe Gelhardt

Armando Broja (£5.0m) looks head and shoulders above any £5.0m-and-under FPL forward at present but the teenage Gelhardt is one for the watchlist for FPL managers eyeing up a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 in the longer term.

HWANG/JIMENEZ LINK-UP DELIVERS AGAIN

Raul Jimenez (£7.6m) set up a Hwang Hee-chan (£5.7m) goal for the third time in as many Gameweeks, even if this latest ‘assist’ was of the Fantasy variety after the Mexican had an effort blocked.

Lage’s troops have scored seven goals over the last four Gameweeks, having found the net only twice before that.

And yet, Wolves’ attacking stats are otherwise on a downward trajectory. Their rate of shots in the last four matches is down over 9.0 per game, with shots in the box also markedly reduced despite encountering some favourable opposition – although big chances, perhaps significantly, haven’t been too badly affected:

Above: Wolves’ goal threat stats from Gameweeks 1-5 (left) and Gameweeks 6-9 (right). Most figures given are ‘per match’.

With four goals from just seven shots, Hwang’s goal conversion rate of 57.1% is unsustainable in the long term – so Wolves’ less gung-ho approach is something to monitor going forward.

Leeds XI: Meslier, Shackleton, Llorente, Cooper, Dallas, Klich (Gelhardt, 62), Struijk, James, Raphinha (Summerville, 54), Harrison (Roberts, 45), Rodrigo.

Wolves XI: Sa, Kilman, Coady, Saiss, Semedo, Moutinho (Neves, 89), Dendoncker, Ait-Nouri (Hoever, 83), Hwang, Traore (Podence, 75), Jimenez.

Broja is such a talented player. Quite unusall to be 1.91m and at the same time to be quick and quite agile. Potential value of the season.

Ah you're too strict. I take your point, but people play this game in varying degrees of fun/competitiveness. Most play to win a ml with a bit of gw bragging banter. Nothing wrong with it & nothing wrong with the OP.

There are just varying levels of interest. Cheers for the stats. I thought his ownership was lower.

It all depends on context. Ronaldo is for sure better at scoring goals than Firmino, but he doesn't give much to the team & other players have to work extra hard. Pogba is better at attacking than Hendo but is awful in the midfield when it comes to defending and workrate. Would rather have Henderson in the midfield, without doubt.

With Fabinho there and that defence behind him you don’t need 2 defensive minded midfielders but hey each to their own. Interesting the different perspectives

I think Vaarane, Pogba and Bruno are the only United players that could actually claim a starting position if added to the Liverpool squad, managed by Klopp. I don't think Klopp would want to play DDG or Ronaldo, but I could be wrong.

If you could guarantee City ine up, I'd love one of their mids but still so much chopping and changing and uncertainty. Will Foden just continually rotate moving forward? Or would Pep allow someone to cement the false 9 role? Where does Gundogan fit in when KDB slots back?

I definitely think that in the sustained form he’s in now - Foden will play at least 3 out of every 4 games. And, at his price, he’s a brilliant option even when he misses that odd game here and there

I can see Havertz dropping to the bench next GW for several reasons...
    1) Small chance Kaku will be back
    2) He was totally anonymous in the 7-0 victory - and by that I mean he wasn’t even helping the score line by assisting the assister or making clever runs to make space for others (let alone scoring/assisting)
    3) Tuchel’s comments before the game saying he doesn’t have good stats and decisive contributions (he was right!!!)
    4) During the game I noticed Havertz get the ball in a dangerous position and did nothing and the camera cut to Tuchel who looked disgusted and made a comment to the coach next to him (probably something like “God, Havertz sucks these days doesn’t he?”)
    5) He was hooked early despite being someone who could have done with the minutes under his belt and being someone who no doubt needs a goal for his confidence.

These are the reasons I’ve already moved him on for Foden. But, fair enough of you wanna take the chance to keep him for Newcastle. He may even do better if he comes off the bench rather than starts

All good points but just can't sell him before Newcastle. Think he will reward owners

        Foden has CPL though.
And honestly, judging from yesterday, even 15mins of Foden is better than 90 from Havertz (which he won’t get anyway).
But like I said, fair enough to keep too I think.
Just don’t be shocked if he’s benched and Ziyech comes in...

He was subbed because he was starting to get clattered a bit later on and its important we don't get another player injured. It was to preserve him as Hanley had been all over him.

You might be right. I just have a feeling (based on the above).
But, I’m not even that bothered if he starts. I’m riding the Foden wagon for the medium term now...

If fit, he will play. There is no alternative number 9, and Tuchel won't want to change the position of Mount or CHO. He was marked closely by Hanley throughout the first half, but still managed to hold up the ball occasionally. He kept the defenders occupied, and so was one reason why the wider players had so much room. He came off early as Tuchel didn't want to risk an injury to him as well as Werner and Lukaku, and some heavier challenges were starting to occur (vide Gibson). Lots of players are going through slightly 'switched off' phases currently, a hang-over from back to back Prem seasons followed by the Euros. He is quite capable of scoring at any time against Newcastle.

Fair points. But I still can’t shake that feeling.
I’m not sure Tuchel shares your analysis on Havertz performance yesterday - but who knows right?

I’m still happy with my decision to sell early - but maybe I won’t be saying that after Newcastle game!

On one of the occasions you mention he was cross that James hadn't overlapped. I think you are reading too much into it. Sometimes they show managers being cross at a non-contemporaneous moment anyway, as it's good tv to show someone having a hissy-fit! So it can be a different move even!

On point 4 he was raging a couple of times. Gesticulating.

      You may well be right.

Still injured (again) after heavy tackle while playing for USA. Minutes will be managed very carefully when he returns.

Yes my son has him in our mini league, and I'd somehow ended up with Mount! Ho Ho! Tho he's still well ahead!

That’s where one’s luck plays a huge part in this game over skill. You could have all the skills in the world but when it’s not your day it won’t be.

I mean, Chelsea scored 7 for the love of holy mary!
Couldn’t get more unlucky than that.

Almost 10 goals to be specific 😆

I need big performances from Trent, Reguillon, Salah, Benrahma, Ronaldo, Antonio and Toney.

In saying that, I’d love a United win to nil more than anything.

I’ve got TAA, Salah, Toney & Vardy in today. Predictions?

      TAA - blank
      Salah - goal + assist
Toney + vardy - one of them scores

      Reguilon - blank
      Benrama - blank
      Antonio - goal
      Ronald - goal

My predictions mean nothing but given how many good players you have in today’s games I would imagine you do ok.

Forget who Abra Dubravka is on here but that minus 24 is on its way to paying off 🙂 🙂

A tidy 21 points from new boys Chilwell and Livra yesterday for a net 19 point gain (less anything benched Trent gets)

He won’t score every week - *checks Chilly recent scores* -
Oh scratch that. He scores every bloody week this lad!

      Haha... definitely.
I particularly remember selling Son before Man Utd because he’d apparently done his hammy.
That cost me 20 odd points plus all the rest after that until I got him back...

If you watched the Leeds game, you would have seen the most impressive 1 point performance of the season from Raphinha. His dribbling was sublime and his passing was incisive and pinpoint - he had the run of the pitch. He also tracked back and recovered numerous balls that frankly he had no business going after - he wanted to be on the ball that badly. It would be a shame if his injury is serious.
