Scout Notes

Is now the time to sell Everton’s value-for-money FPL midfielders?

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Everton v Watford.

For a briefer summary of all six of Saturday’s games, click here, while the footer at the bottom of this piece will direct you to our detailed Scout Notes on the other Gameweek 9 action.

EVERTON 2-5 WATFORD

  • Goals: Tom Davies (£4.9m), Richarlison (£7.4m) | Joshua King (£5.5m) x3, Juraj Kucka (£5.5m), Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Demarai Gray (£5.8m), Michael Keane (£5.0m) | Craig Cathcart (£4.4m), Cucho Hernandez (£5.0m), Dennis x2, Joao Pedro (£5.4m)
  • Bonus: King x3, Dennis x2, Keane x1

BENITEZ’S HONEYMOON OVER?

Everton’s attacking assets have offered us some excellent value for money this season but we might be reaching the jumping-off point for Andros Townsend (£5.7m) and co, not just because of Saturday’s freak 5-2 loss to Watford.

Depending on your view of the backlines of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, the Toffees’ favourable fixture run has, or soon will, come to an end.

Rafael Benitez’s troops sit bottom of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty from Gameweeks 10-18, meeting all bar Manchester United of the ‘big six’ plus Leicester City and Brentford.

Demarai Gray (£5.8m) still found a way to deliver his fifth attacking return of the season with his assist for Everton’s opener but it was a largely lethargic offensive display for the third home match running, with injuries perhaps finally catching up with the blue half of Merseyside.

Salomon Rondon (£6.0m) yet again flattered to deceive in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m), while Abdoulaye Doucoure‘s (£5.8m) first no-show of 2021/22 was felt at both ends of the pitch.

Yerry Mina (£4.9m) was arguably the biggest loss, as the out-of-sorts Michael Keane (£5.0m) and Ben Godfrey (£4.8m) served up a horror show at the back.

“Today was not about [the injured players], we had enough quality on the pitch to win – and we were winning. It is up to us to manage the situation and improve that. Some players were a little bit tired but it doesn’t matter, it is not an excuse. We have to be better – especially when you are in control of the game. You can’t make the mistakes we made.” – Rafael Benitez

While Gray, Townsend and Doucoure have been success stories in Benitez’s traditionally strong start at a new club, Lucas Digne (£5.3m) has arguably been the biggest FPL flop of the campaign: the France international averages under 1.9 points per match after a ticker-topping opening nine Gameweeks.

A positive was the goalscoring return of substitute Richarlison (£7.4m), at least, with the Brazilian’s comeback presumably now meaning that Townsend’s stint as penalty-taker has come to an end.

KING LEADS THE LINE FOR NEW-LOOK WATFORD

After seeing his new charges thrashed by Liverpool last weekend, Claudio Ranieri had a full week of training with his Watford squad and set his side up in a 4-3-3, following the disastrous wing-back experiment of Gameweek 8.

Ismaila Sarr (£6.3m) was back in the right-wing role that seems to suit him best but somehow he missed out on any attacking return after a rare off-day and early substitution, leaving a quartet of sub-£6.0m forwards to do the damage.

Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) hadn’t even started the game but replaced Sarr to bank three attacking returns and move up to sixth in the FPL forwards’ points table, while the corner-taking Cucho Hernandez (£5.0m) – again preferred on the left flank – and substitute Joao Pedro (£5.4m) each chipped in with an assist apiece.

Star of the show, though, was Joshua King (£5.5m).

Deployed in the middle of the front three, King racked up a total of four big chances and an expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 2.13, totals beaten by only Christian Benteke (£6.3m) in the Gameweek just gone.

“For a striker it is confidence. I had a horrible season last season. Any striker when you start scoring gets confidence.” – Joshua King

The Norwegian has now quietly amassed six attacking returns in his last four appearances for the Hornets, although like Everton, King and his teammates languish at the wrong end of the Season Ticker over the next six matches: they’re probably a ‘hold but don’t buy’ for Gameweek 10, after which comes a particularly nasty set of five games:

The good news for owners of Armando Broja (£5.0m) et al ahead of next Saturday was that, despite an improved defensive showing, the Watford backline still managed to concede twice to a below-par Everton; that makes it nine Premier League matches without a clean sheet for the Hornets.

Dennis will miss that match against the Saints, meanwhile, having collected his fifth booking of the campaign.

Everton XI (4-4-1-1): Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Godfrey, Digne, Townsend, Davies, Allan, Gordon (Richarlison 60). Gray (Iwobi 77), Rondon.

Watford XI (4-3-3): Foster, Ngakia (Nkoulou 76), Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Masina, Tufan (Pedro 64), Sissoko, Kucka, Sarr (Dennis 64), King, Hernandez.

    Is this worth a -8 ?
    Ronaldo > Toney
    Gallagher > Foden
    Semedo > Trent

      Good move!

Have Foden/TAA, thinking Vardy/Christensen to Toney/Cancelo for -4 this week, then Havertz to Son next week

      The bottom two are.

At around the same price and all under £7m and some closer to £5m there are 10 forwards with better form than Toney going into the next set of games.

Haven't checked but I'm guessing they include these sinners.

Benteke - very far from nailed - missing loads of chances but looking better and 9 in last 18 starts or close to it
King - ? backing Watford on basis of 30 minutes
Broja - ? fitness and lame attack
          Dennis - banned
          Daka - not a starter
Nacho - up a price bracket really
          Maupay - Maupay
Edouard - likely nailed but City and risk of oop
Hwang - intersting call for sure
Rodrigo - playing poorly in a poor Leeds attack

          Missing one

            Yep... Most of these. Thanks.

There are actually 15 guys, 5 with the same form.

The OP just needs to go strikers, form, under £7m on the transfer page. I find the browser has better functionality than the app.

Thing is with that form tab it skews just one or two returns in the last 3 matches or so). Bit of an issue for me especially at that price bracket where returns typically fall randomly - very few of them are the types you'd back to return on a consistent basis. I'd look at season form (with fixtures) by preference.

(Much the same can be said with the watchlist ticker on FFS which weights the last 3 over everything else - I imagine it is lazily borrowed from FP.)

Doing something analogous simply spreading the moves out. In your case I might wait on either Foden or TAA a week. Wolves have a very solid home fixture and Palace are one of the strongest defensive units in the bottom half and no guarantees Foden starts just before a week with both CL and United.

Hey guys, how does this team look?

    Ramsdale Steele
    TAA Dias Cancelo Azpilicueta Livramento
    Salah Raphinha Benrahma Saka Brownhill
    Vardy Antonio Toney

    1 FT
    1.1 ITB

Was thinking of doing Benrahma to Mount?

    Thanks!

You have bench cover and Liverpool are scoring backloads and Jota has much more consistent threat than Mount.

Broja is more of an enabler. Will have this team with 0.6 to spare after I make the moves:

        Sanchez
        TAA Cancelo Rudiger White
        Salah Son Gallagher Mbeumo
        Ronaldo Antonio

        Steele Broja Livra Gilmour

If any of Vardy, Mbeumo, Raph won't be available for the weekend, would you:

    1) Play Livra and keep FT
    2) 4.4 to Broja and play him, bench Livra
    3) Transfer out the injured guy

    1. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

      2 is not for me

1 makes most sense I guess depending on set up. That said Vardy has a wretched record after injury and if he's out then he becomes a very possible sell depending on where you go. Also I'd think of moving Raph too. For all his ability and eye test he's stuck on 32 points in a poor looking Leeds attack. But again it depends on where you go - the only moves I see right now are up a price bracket

        I think this is right.

Vardy can struggle to shake off an injury and for all the quality that Raphinha has and the fixture the form is a concern too. Leeds attack is lacking.

Out of the 3, you would think Raph was the worst. So Raph out to Foden/Bernardo a good transfer imo. Otherwise save and play Livra

I think playing Livra is fine. The problem I have is that Duffy is my other playing sub, who might not play and won’t get any points if he does. So I may need cover for Cancelo and Chilwell

Watched Brentford last match. Mbeumo got plenty of good chances but Brentford aren’t that lethal when it comes to finishing. They are a good mid table side but not good as westham, everton imo. Not sure doubling tripling up is a good idea for the fixtures ahead. May be just mbeumo or Just toney

I don't think its about how well they play, its about the quality they have and the creativity. They are not very creative, but they do control games and are a tough opponents to play against. So its a matter of fixtures here imo.

    2. ZeBestee
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

Yes makes sense. They played well in that first half, controlling the game without creating real threat. Mbeumo tried but only had half chances. I think they do well against teams who don't sit back, teams who attack them. Would be interesting to see how they do against easier fixtures.

      Reece Azpi T.Silva Rudiger Chilwell

That's what I expect vs Newcastle

Azpi is preferred at RCB, not RWB. He played there because Reece was recovering, just like Alonso while Chilwell was recovering

This is why Chalobah has had so many starts recently. RCB pecking order is Azpi > Chris ≥ Chalobah. Azpi only plays RWB to rest Reece, and Azpi himself will get his occasional rests as the preferred RCB (so Chris/Chalobah comes in)

Chris covers both RCB and central CB, resting Azpi or T.Silva. Rudiger has Sarr as his backup, with rare rests. Chilwell was meant to be rotating with Alonso, but it seems Alonso is now a backup too

Interesting to see Tuchel settling on a preferred back 5, after last season's spinning tops 🙂

This week looks like a Nice team for me, so i would stick and then maybe do some changes next week? Ings and Pukki is not my cup of tea but in this week, not the worst, Leeds not good and West Ham is difficult but also a game which is difficult to predict, West ham a bit on and off defensively, and you dont know if its 0-0 kind of fane or 4-2 kind of game. Mids looks fine and def also good.

If Foden continue to starting for city and this is city, he will become the second owned mid in the game?? What do you think? This guy is good

Yes he is good, but playing for Pep, it will take a lot to be highly owned.

Still think he gonna play like 7 out of 10 games which is enough for me plus he has potential to come on and do damage aswell. Had him last season and it didnt go well but hopefull pep gives him more opportunities this season and sees him as instrumental to this city side

He finally has a role that nobody else plays as well: CF

Last season, he had proper competition everywhere Pep played him. Now, Aguero is gone, Jesus is at RW, and Torres flatters to deceive when fit (ignore the hat trick)

KDB can play there, but it involves removing his best asset (assists) and demanding something he's never been the best at (short-distance shot accuracy)

Sterling only ever looks like a false 9 - not a proper striker - when he plays there. Grealish isn't so comfortable either

So this means there's a good chance Foden has taken over the Aguero role (see stats too), but with the flair of a midfielder. So, Messi CF role?

I think Pep has recreated his Messi (not that he's as good as Messi, but he's playing that role) at CF, since City refused to pump the cash for Kane, who offers the same qualities but is already proven and more accurate than Foden

He'll surely get his rests, of course. Even KDB isn't immune to that. Sterling, KDB, Aguero, Sané all got rested even when they got around 200 points

He's not nailed but he is first choice, a key Pep player right now and fantastic when on the pitch. You treat him like Jota - bring him in now and leave him for the next 10~ weeks.

3 huge red arrows in a row, although I feel my team is looking pretty strong..

    Meslier
    Trent Dias Rudiger Semedo (Duffy)
    Gallagher Raphinha Salah Son (Bissouma)
    Vardy Toney (Dennis)

No free transfers and 1.8 itb could do Raphinha to foden -4? Depending on injuries..

Everybody in that Chelsea team except CF has attacking threat

I have Rudiger and almost sold him for Chilwell for -4, only to have Rudiger get an assist by being *fouled in the box* for a pen, and not from a set piece

If you have one of the other nailed 4, find a way to double up with Chilwell. If it's sideways, please let it be for free

    Hi All,
My squads not in bad shape, but I find myself wanting to take a hit this week despite not necessarily needing to. My thinking is that it'll pay back over the next few weeks.

    Considering ASM & Shaw > Hwang & Cancelo (-4)

Worth the hit or just do the ASM move? Obv waiting on Raph/Vardy news like everyone else first.

    Sancez, Steele
    TAA, James, Shaw, White, Livra
    Salah, Havertz, Foden, Raph, Brownhill

      It's still Mbeumo

OOP, shooting a lot, set pieces, fixture block that runs for ages, team has better attacking stats, absolutely nailed for starts, pedigree as a goalscorer for years until long Covid (lower level, but still)

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

ESR has exploded only when Arsenal met teams in a pretty bad state, and his stats and performances dip annoyingly against everybody else. This is why you see ESR benched often in FPL, but not Mbeumo. Mbeumo and Brentford always look dangerous, even against Liverpool (scored thrice) and Chelsea (Mendy counted saves)

This question is unlikely to exist by GW13, imo. Arsenal still has a lot to prove against good sides that turn up in that game

I'll put it this way: ESR is a better first sub, Mbeumo is a better starter

Bamford to Jim; doesn’t return from international.
Jimi to Lukaku; injured and doesn’t play.
Lukaku to Vardy. Plays first half and blanks.
