Scout Notes

Is now the time to sell Everton’s value-for-money FPL midfielders?

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Everton v Watford.

For a briefer summary of all six of Saturday’s games, click here, while the footer at the bottom of this piece will direct you to our detailed Scout Notes on the other Gameweek 9 action.

EVERTON 2-5 WATFORD

  • Goals: Tom Davies (£4.9m), Richarlison (£7.4m) | Joshua King (£5.5m) x3, Juraj Kucka (£5.5m), Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Demarai Gray (£5.8m), Michael Keane (£5.0m) | Craig Cathcart (£4.4m), Cucho Hernandez (£5.0m), Dennis x2, Joao Pedro (£5.4m)
  • Bonus: King x3, Dennis x2, Keane x1

BENITEZ’S HONEYMOON OVER?

Everton’s attacking assets have offered us some excellent value for money this season but we might be reaching the jumping-off point for Andros Townsend (£5.7m) and co, not just because of Saturday’s freak 5-2 loss to Watford.

Depending on your view of the backlines of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, the Toffees’ favourable fixture run has, or soon will, come to an end.

Rafael Benitez’s troops sit bottom of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty from Gameweeks 10-18, meeting all bar Manchester United of the ‘big six’ plus Leicester City and Brentford.

Demarai Gray (£5.8m) still found a way to deliver his fifth attacking return of the season with his assist for Everton’s opener but it was a largely lethargic offensive display for the third home match running, with injuries perhaps finally catching up with the blue half of Merseyside.

Salomon Rondon (£6.0m) yet again flattered to deceive in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m), while Abdoulaye Doucoure‘s (£5.8m) first no-show of 2021/22 was felt at both ends of the pitch.

Yerry Mina (£4.9m) was arguably the biggest loss, as the out-of-sorts Michael Keane (£5.0m) and Ben Godfrey (£4.8m) served up a horror show at the back.

“Today was not about [the injured players], we had enough quality on the pitch to win – and we were winning. It is up to us to manage the situation and improve that. Some players were a little bit tired but it doesn’t matter, it is not an excuse. We have to be better – especially when you are in control of the game. You can’t make the mistakes we made.” – Rafael Benitez

While Gray, Townsend and Doucoure have been success stories in Benitez’s traditionally strong start at a new club, Lucas Digne (£5.3m) has arguably been the biggest FPL flop of the campaign: the France international averages under 1.9 points per match after a ticker-topping opening nine Gameweeks.

A positive was the goalscoring return of substitute Richarlison (£7.4m), at least, with the Brazilian’s comeback presumably now meaning that Townsend’s stint as penalty-taker has come to an end.

KING LEADS THE LINE FOR NEW-LOOK WATFORD

After seeing his new charges thrashed by Liverpool last weekend, Claudio Ranieri had a full week of training with his Watford squad and set his side up in a 4-3-3, following the disastrous wing-back experiment of Gameweek 8.

Ismaila Sarr (£6.3m) was back in the right-wing role that seems to suit him best but somehow he missed out on any attacking return after a rare off-day and early substitution, leaving a quartet of sub-£6.0m forwards to do the damage.

Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) hadn’t even started the game but replaced Sarr to bank three attacking returns and move up to sixth in the FPL forwards’ points table, while the corner-taking Cucho Hernandez (£5.0m) – again preferred on the left flank – and substitute Joao Pedro (£5.4m) each chipped in with an assist apiece.

Star of the show, though, was Joshua King (£5.5m).

Deployed in the middle of the front three, King racked up a total of four big chances and an expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 2.13, totals beaten by only Christian Benteke (£6.3m) in the Gameweek just gone.

“For a striker it is confidence. I had a horrible season last season. Any striker when you start scoring gets confidence.” – Joshua King

The Norwegian has now quietly amassed six attacking returns in his last four appearances for the Hornets, although like Everton, King and his teammates languish at the wrong end of the Season Ticker over the next six matches: they’re probably a ‘hold but don’t buy’ for Gameweek 10, after which comes a particularly nasty set of five games:

The good news for owners of Armando Broja (£5.0m) et al ahead of next Saturday was that, despite an improved defensive showing, the Watford backline still managed to concede twice to a below-par Everton; that makes it nine Premier League matches without a clean sheet for the Hornets.

Dennis will miss that match against the Saints, meanwhile, having collected his fifth booking of the campaign.

Everton XI (4-4-1-1): Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Godfrey, Digne, Townsend, Davies, Allan, Gordon (Richarlison 60). Gray (Iwobi 77), Rondon.

Watford XI (4-3-3): Foster, Ngakia (Nkoulou 76), Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Masina, Tufan (Pedro 64), Sissoko, Kucka, Sarr (Dennis 64), King, Hernandez.

Any ideas what to do with the team this week. Feeling really disheartened after last week with the wrong moves I made.
(replacing Jota with Havertz and removing Captaincy off Salah to Havertz last minute!)
Thinking Shaw ----> ?? is a priority but who is a good replacement (Non chelsea defender). Happy to also take a hit for another move.

    Havertz Kovacic Salah (C) Raphinha

why non-Chelsea defender? Surely Rudiger or Chilwell would be a good shout?

And try not to beat yourself up too much about the Havertz move. I did the same, as did many others. It looked a great move on paper, but it was a gamble, and unfortunately we got punished in the most brutal fashion. Still a long way to go in the season, and missing 30-odd points wont define it. Keep making good moves and there's plenty of opportunities to catch up with double gameweeks etc.

Like it a lot - bit dubious on the Brentford double and would slot Hwang in over Broja and possibly go makeweight in midfield. Anyone playing alongside Jim is going to get consistent chances imo

The other one I'm eying is Kovacic. If he gets the same minutes going froward he's a tempter in that slot.

I'd certainly consider it given it's a makeweight slot.

I'm in the process of moving towards a very similar set up - I'll just be there in 12/13 probs.

But on one scenario I might skip Son and go the whole hog across midfield if Spurs still look gash. Moving towards something like this at the hectic part of the schedule. More punty with funds spread everywhere but flexible in where I go with extra defender/mid/attacker

TAA Chilwell Rudiger Livra 5.0 type
              Mo Foden Jota Raph Mount/Punt
              Antonio Toney plus 7.0 type

On your proposed Son set up I think there's something to be said for Brownhill and cash itb for the very foreseeable unforeseen.

      This is a 5-5-3 formation

There is no right player to bench for the next 3 GWs, and that also means it'll be very difficult to generate funds for a post-WC restructuring, especially after GW11

I'd convert Jota, Mbeumo and Broja/Toney into a premium striker (Kane, Vardy, keep Mbeumo) or midfielder (KDB, Mané, keep Toney) and play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, if possible

      1. Ze_Austin

But if you still want the cheap guys over that premium spot for now, just keep the money in the bank. This template will change very, very soon

        Again.

It’s more the fact I’ve pumped some high upside rotation players into the team. Cancelo, jota, foden, chilly, James could all be rotated on any given weekend.

Bench of 4.0, 5.5, 4.0, 5.0 isn’t too pricey. Just feels like you would start a lot of them every week but broken down by price point it feels fine

I played my WC long ago, and right now I've no outfield player I can drop. ESR missed out last weekend, and I still can't find a place for him after his haul. I did get Livra's points, but now I've bought Chilwell I can't fit him in either. My other current benchee is Toney. I'm almost hoping Raph and Vardy fail fitness tests to make my Starting XI easier to select.

Are you thinking of dropping down to a 4.5 attacker for last place on your bench? Or happy with a playing bench approach moving forward?

        2. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah. This doesn't feel like a problem now, but it can easily become a problem from GW14, when CR7's fixture run starts

I've cleared my bench for GW10. I now have 11 sure starters, Livra as an amazing first sub, and two nailed 4.5 mids

If Vardy's out, I'll sell him for Toney and bank the funds until I get the premium involved in the next big template shift (Kane or Ronaldo)

Pumping your team full of rotation risks doesn't guarantee that you'll get those hauls off the bench when your rotation risk comes on for 20 minutes

Son to 4.5 and Toney to 12m striker is my insurance but I get what you are saying. My 5.5mid to a 4.5mid might give me the cash for future flexibility

Rather think the Cr7 fixture run starts in 16

There is nothing on form to suggest that Arsenal and Palace are great fixtures for attack.

GW16 is when I'm getting him, yes. But the fixture list starts GW14, with Liverpool City Chelsea out of the way

Arsenal and Palace are average to good defences, but not the best. They're not at the level that guarantee stopping a team at the level of Man U's attacking stats, so far this season

                • 5 Years

                Agreed then

But there's so much to happen at United between now and then I'm personally willing to ignore the situation that far down the road. Quite conceivable a new broom will be in who decides that he isn't the one - at least as nailed starter.

And well on more or less any set up there will be a second premium who can be switched into him at a minus 4 at most.

                1. Ze_Austin
                  • 5 Years
                  2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah. I currently have Vardy. With that fixture list, he can easily be Kane instead of CR7

All I'm suggesting is that it's good to prep for this by skinning the bench from second sub, and reducing rotation risks too. There are so many good nailed players atm, with good fixtures, and a clear XI every GW. Hence the suggestion of a third premium to go with Salah and Son for now. Or just keep that cheap asset with funds in the bank for the next template shift

                  1. pingissimus
                    • 5 Years
                    2 years, 5 months ago

Our difference then is largely on bench strategy

I'm looking at the fixture schedule after IB where games come thick and fast. It looks like prime rotation territory and any City or Chelsea is a risk as is Jota if you fancy him - as I do. In that case for me a second sub is valid. That said I've also intentionally played 10 this season for a healthy green arrow so I'm not set on anything.

Who you gonna bench each week?

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

        Fairly straightforward no?

Until last week Livra was well down the list of defenders on returns and not top for value either. He won't get 9 points every week.

The 5.0/5.5 forward is ideal benching material moving towards the busy part of the schedule.

Yes you will get benched points but the investment in the bench is fairly minimal on current budgets.

Livra has returned in 5 of his last 6. He's basically a 5.5 defender on the cheap.

Dubious that those stats will hold up personally - more 5.0 🙂 Equivalent of using Tierney as first bench in my book.

Could be wrong of course. Just suspect that the Southampton cs record is a bit of a mirage and the result of a certain amount of variance.

His next 3 oppos all have very poor defences. With 4 premium defenders and no baggage further forward, I'll reluctantly have to leave him out unless I'm done for rotations (which is why I have no lightweights). But i'm delighted with my 23 points so far for 4m and expect plenty more.
It took him a few games to really get into his stride but he's looking confident settling up and taking chances now - the best is yet to come, I'd say. I just hope he's on my bench the day Saints get done for 9!

        Cheers guys, much appreciated.

On Brentford it will be interesting to see how they capitalise on their good fixture run. Especially the next 3, it does make sense to be on them now but is there a trade off, of new Premier League bounce and beginning to be worked out?

It will be vital for Burnley, Norwich and Newcastle to be in those games as part of their Premier league fight. They could be tough encounters.

Looking again, when will you plan to use lampety? I’d imagine you’d play 3 at the back every week and you have Livra as cover and Sanchez in goal. I’d turn Lampety into a city defender by downgrading Jesus.

Is Havertz actually worth keeping for GW10? I didn't see anything about the way he played that makes me think he's likely to score points, unless the ball basically falls to him in front of goal and he can't miss. His movement was terrible.

Thinking of swapping out for Foden but I know that move could backfire with pep roulette etc. Just feel like Foden is about to go on a bit of a run now.

I’m holding, I bought him specifically for this 3 week run, I think have to back him to come good, although I agree he didn’t look great. I’m more worried Tuchel might bench him.

Yeah a benching is entirely possible too, certainly based on performance. They don't really have anyone else to fill that role though, so he might get another chance. Surely he'll want to prove he can do better.

I have other issues but I can get 11, what do you think of Christensen > chillwell ?

A bit sideways but I have learnt from previous seasons chillwell is almost like Antonio when he is fit and playing just get him he is so scary not to have

Rest of defence is rudiger cancelo Taa livra so which would give me a very premium defence

think its fine. Looks as though Christensen is favoured for the tougher games (away matches and top sides at home) and offers no goal threat anyway. That said, I have Christensen and still think he's a good pick. That defence looks great if you're playing a back 4 (or 5), otherwise some very tough benching decisions.

I think we’ve seen a changing of the guard in the press of Liverpool and jota is being the key guy for calling the press. Klopp likes to play jota is the bigger games in the league, he did vs city. Mane will be back in the team but I think I prefer the saving on jota when deciding between the two. Both excellent picks mind

Same reason as KDB: the rare rest after many games, since they now have good cover

Jota is still the backup. He's been since he came to Liverpool. I know this is hard to take with his points so far, but there has been a reason someone dropped for Jota every single time he played, from international duty to fitness et al. Give Klopp's first three a fully fit run with no injuries or congestion, and Jota's role becomes clearer

Just saw this on twitter from my favourite analyst:

Yh involved in all-round play quite well. Him and Firmino always look good together . Also Klopp is clever. A 1v1 threat like mane is exactly what AWB wants. A guy with elite movement in the box is exactly what AWB doesn’t want.
