Captains

Who is the best captain for FPL Gameweek 12?

Deputy Editor Tom joined Scoutcast regular Joe earlier today to look at the best captaincy candidates for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in Gameweek 12.

You can watch the video either embedded in this article below or on our YouTube channel.

A certain Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) once again looks like the leading armband option, as Liverpool host Arsenal on Saturday evening.

However, is there a case to be made for Tottenham Hotspur duo Son Heung-min (£10.3m) and Harry Kane (£12.2m), especially given the latter’s fine form for England during the international break?

In our video, we also discuss some of the less considered options, such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m) – who arguably has the most appealing fixture of the round, Michail Antonio (£8.2m), Phil Foden (£8.3m) and Joao Cancelo (£6.5m).

You can cast your vote on the widget of our home page, and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified of future episodes.

Don’t forget to check back for our Captain Sensible article later in the week, which will delve into even more detail on the main runners and riders.

    Which WC team looks best,

    A) Guaita/Foster
    Taa/James/Cancelo/Duffy/Omoba
    Salah/Jota/Esr/Gallagher/Mbeum
    Kane/Antonio/Wilson 0.0ITB

    B) Guaita/Foster
    Taa/James/Cancelo/Duffy/Reguilo
    Salah/Jota/Son/Gallagher/Foden
    Toney/Antonio/Davis 0.01ITB

    A) Wilson/Kane > Cr7/Hwang
Or 4.4 fwd upgrade mbeumo to Foden

    B) Toney/Son/Reguilon > Cr7/Esr/Omoba

I'm leaning towards A. The fact I have exactly zero in the bank feels right and it allows me to keep some discount on the likes if esr.

Thoughts on this wildcard guys and girls?

    Guaita (Foster)
    TAA, James, Livra (Lamptey) (Ait-Nouri)
    Salah, Bowen, Foden, Buendia (ESR)
    Kane, Édouard, Wilson

Slightly different, Buendia goes back to Raphinha next week

I like seeing WC’s ‘a bit different’ but booking in a transfer after 1 week tends to end badly in my experience. Great thing following a WC is having a good chance to roll a transfer if your can.

Him or Bailey could do well under Stevie G but it is a bit of a punt - maybe give him a run of games if your set on keeping?

In that bracket I like cornet for the next couple who could easily swop to another similar priced asset if not performing/fixtures change.

Also moving away from ‘big back 4’ so a different strategy which might be ok with TAA and James in anyway.

      Good luck

Not sure on the best choice here.
    1. Bachmann/Gray -> Steele (or Foster) + Gallagher. Safe moves.
    2. Sanchez/Jimenez-> Guaita/Wilson and just prob WC next GW if need.
    3. WC now and be done with it to get on the likes of Jota, Son, James.

    Sanchez.
    TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo, Livramento.
    Salah, Raphinha, Benrahma.
    Vardy, Jimenez, Antonio.
    Bachmann, Rudiger, Gray, Bissouma.
    2ft, 1.1 ITB. WC. OR about 45k.

    WC Team-potential
    Sanchez, Steele.
    James, Royal, TAA, Cancelo, Livramento.
    Son, Raphinha, Jota, Salah, Bowen.
    Wilson, Antonio, Davis.
    0.8m ITB with this.

I am a believer that the new-manager-bounce is a significant factor for a handful of games after they are appointed. Where they are joining relegation-threatened teams, I would normally expect an improvement in defence, even if that means slightly fewer goals conceded.*

*Note - I have no data to back up this claim.

It's with this in mind that I think we should be reconsidering the fixture tracker at this immediate moment. Our current juiciest three fixtures all comprise new-manager teams. I expect norwich, Watford and Newcastle to have improved performances over the next few fixtures, so I don't think their rating should be quite so blue on the tracker at the moment. Also - crystal Palace appear to be rated poorly for a team that has shown great defensive stats this season.

I think now is a good time to take advantage of the customise tool in the fixture tracker and see if it influences your transfer targets.

New manager bounce is not backed up by data, sadly, especially during the season

It only comes into play when the manager was the only/main problem: good players but bad tactics (Lampard, Ole) or they lost the dressing room (Mourinho)

When the problem is from the board or the player quality, the bounce simply doesn't happen. See Spurs with Conte and Watford with Ranieri, two former EPL winners, then West Brom with Big Sam

      1. Newcastle will still conceded despite and uptick in their attacking intent.
      2. Norwich looking stronger anyway at the back but will still lose most games
      3. Watford remain tosh. Love Ranieri but look at Fulham, similar situation IMO.

Totally agree on Palace - not a green fixture at all anymore; more than just a 'bounce' under Vieira. Could see a slight improvement in Newcastle's attacking output with these favourable next 4 fixtures. But I dont expect much to change at Watford or Norwich

I think it’s a wise move to add an addition level of ‘uncertainty’ when playing these new manager clubs for a few weeks. It’s normal if a new manager comes in to any line of work that people might put a bit more effort in etc, change of personnel and roles.

If you look in championship Forest brought in a new manager and are still riding the crest of a wave despite having relatively poor players. It can happen.

What’s odd is that we have so many all at once so hopefully this leads to some strange results to mix things up in the next few weeks.

Yeah I think a lot of the replies above have a good point about applying a little scepticism to the size of the bounce, but the fact that there are so many (ok, maybe Watford's has already passed/failed) is the exciting factor. Imagine if Norwich, Newcastle, villa and spurs all suddenly start performing well...

Not overly excited by Kane, certainly don't think 7 goals against a couple of pub teams is compelling evidence to sign him. But... I do have Vardy who has a bad fixture, £1.9m in the bank and I'm a Leeds fan so it looks like an obvious move and hopefully some compensation if he does score against us....

    A) Mount to Jota now and roll.1ft. Then Vardy and Toney to CR7 and fodder gw14
    B) Vardy & Mount to Kane & Gallagher (already have Son)

Right smack bang in the middle of this team there’s a troll staring at me, not even trying to hide. Troll to Jota.

        Nooo! Keep Zaha.

Hard to do with 1 FT but if you dont mind a hit, maybe Pinnock & Raphinha -> James & Gallagher

Spurs have Skipp suspended, Romero injured and possibly Hoijberg injured too-good for Raph

Plus he plays on Reguilon more attacking side, so maybe an option or will Conte reign Reguilon in.

When I bought Hwang (got a goal from him too), my exit strategy was to see him as a good sub if his form dried up, until the combined move from Son to Ronaldo involving him in GW16

I now see him as a good playing sub, except maybe vs Norwich

So he's not on this list for me atm. If there was someone better to play against a whipping boy defence, I'd have said bench Vardy... But here, it's Hwang

        Agreed.

Bought Hwang on WC in GW10 as a very decent 8th attacker with a view of playing him in GW13 and 14 if needed

Who would you bench this week? I'm between Raph and Vardy as I want to play Livra, crazy times

    Rambo/Foster
    Cancelo/Chilwell/James/Livra/Duffy
    Salah/Son/Havertz/Raph/Mbeumo
    Vardy/Toney/4.4

Am I right to bench Broja, Raphinia, Brownhill and Foster here?

    Starting XI:
    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Dias Chilwell Livramento
    Foden Salah Gallagher
    Antonio Kane
