Richarlison to miss Gameweek 13 as Cancelo keeps up fine FPL form

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 12 Scout Notes with analysis of Manchester City v Everton.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, click here.

MANCHESTER CITY 3-0 EVERTON

  • Goals: Raheem Sterling (£10.6m), Rodri (£5.5m), Bernardo Silva (£7.2m)
  • Assists: Joao Cancelo (£6.5m), Cole Palmer (£4.5m)
  • Bonus (projected): Cancelo x3, Rodri x2, Kyle Walker (£5.5m) x1

CANCELO SHINES

After his excellent defence splitting pass for Raheem Sterling’s (£10.6m) opener, Joao Cancelo (£6.5m) has now produced five FPL assists this season, more than he managed across the entire 2020/21 campaign.

As a result, the Portuguese sits joint-top of the defender standings alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m), while across all positional categories, only Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has returned more FPL points to date.

Against Everton, it was another strong showing from Cancelo, who created two chances, attempted one shot and accumulated 85 opposition-half touches, more than any other player on the pitch bar Kyle Walker (£5.5m).

Joao Cancelo’s touch heatmap v Everton in Gameweek 12

Discussing Cancelo after the game, Pep Guardiola said:

“Since Joao arrived he played good at a high level because he has one big huge quality: he loves to play football. He likes training sessions, he would play football 24 hours a day every single day and when you find a player like that – like Riyad [Mahrez] or Phil Foden – you have a diamond on your hands.

Most of the players love or like to play football but I remember these three examples. Always I see them like little boys playing in the street when they are seven years old. They play football right now like when they were on the street or in school. This is great and that is why Joao has been consistent in his game and that is so good.”

STERLING RIGHT, FODEN LEFT, PALMER THROUGH THE MIDDLE

With Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) and Jack Grealish (£7.7m) absent with Covid and a minor knock respectively, Guardiola opted for a front three of Raheem Sterling (£10.6m), Phil Foden (£8.3m) and Cole Palmer (£4.5m), who made his first Premier League start.

The set-up meant that Sterling was deployed on the right, a role he thrived in, and in addition to his goal, he also thought he had won a first-half penalty, only for it to be overturned.

Elsewhere, Foden ended the day with just one FPL point, as he was replaced on 57 minutes as Guardiola looks to manage his fitness, while Bernardo Silva (£7.2m) bagged his fourth attacking return in his last five appearances.

Ruben Dias (£6.1m), meanwhile, was benched along with Gabriel Jesus (£8.7m), with Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) – who was back from suspension – partnering John Stones (£5.3m) in the centre of defence.

“We had rhythm in our game, they defended really well, so deep, on the counter-attack. In general, we controlled the game. We played the game we should play to beat teams like Everton.

It [Rodri’s goal] was great, the strike was amazing. Great goal. When one team comes just to defend it is always going to be difficult and you have to be careful. Everything is going to be well in the right moment. The quality of the players we have made the difference.

I know him [Raheem Sterling] quite well. Since I arrived, he has been a key player for us. He has to perform like he performed today, and I am happy for him. He did a great job.

He [Cole Palmer] played almost 90 minutes. He has more experience. He is a huge talented player. It was difficult with not much spaces there, but he played a good game, and he will improve in the future as he is so young.” – Pep Guardiola

INJURIES HURTING EVERTON

With Yerry Mina (£4.9m), Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.4m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) out, Everton were already struggling with injuries before today, but saw Demarai Gray (£5.7m) add to their woes as he pulled up with a groin injury in the first-half.

The winger was able to walk off unaided, but will be a big miss if he is set for a period on the sidelines.

One player who will definitely sit out next weekend’s fixture at Brentford is Richarlison (£7.4m), who is now suspended having picked up his fifth booking of the season at the Etihad.

After today’s loss, Everton have now failed to win a single match since Gameweek 6, scoring just four goals and conceding more big chances than any other side in the process. They may have to wait a while longer before things improve, too, with a particularly tough set of fixtures to come.

“I don’t like to lose against anyone, it doesn’t matter about the name of the team. You have to be a threat on the counter-attack in these kinds of games, we had our chances without creating too much, and it was a matter of time after defending before you make a mistake.

We tried, we had two or three situations in the first half where we didn’t do well, and normally you lose these games. Clearly, he [Demarai Gray] is one of our most dangerous players on the counter attack, without him we were missing something, but with the players we had up front we had to create something more.

The goal at the end of the first half changed things, you don’t want to concede, but when you concede you don’t want it to be at the end of the first half. Then you have to take more risks and then you are more exposed, and they have more chances on the counter.” – Rafa Benitez

Man City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte (Ake 76), Cancelo, Rodri, Bernardo, Gundogan, Sterling, Foden (Mahrez 58), Palmer (McAtee 87)

Everton XI: Pickford, Coleman, Godfrey, Keane, Digne, Delph (Rondon 63), Allan (Onyango 90), Gordon, Townsend, Gray (Iwobi 17), Richarlison

So Vardy and ESR/Gallagher or Son and Dennis?

Probably Son and Dennis just because it leaves more ITB.

Should I get rid of Ronaldo and play TAA, Rudiger, James & Cancelo at the back or rather get rid of Toney or Antonio and then only have 3 premium defenders?

I'm guessing you didn't make the mistake of bringing in Havertz for a hit and then captaining him instead of Salah the week Salah scored 24 points.

    Sanchez

    TAA - Chilwell - James - White - Livramento

    Salah - Son - Jota - Mbuemo - Brownhill

    Kane - Hwang - Toney

    2FT no money

Original plan was to do Mbuemo to Gallagher but I'm price out of that.

I've got exact money to do Livramento(or White)+Toney to Cancelo + 4.5 fodder tonight.  It gives me a better first 11, but weakens the bench to only 2 that play, of which one is Brownhill. Is this too much of a risk?

    Any advice here?

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo Chilwell TAA Reguillon
    Salah Saka Havertz Mbuemo
    Kane Antonio

    Armstrong Livramento Brownhill.

    Nothing ITB.

Few iffy looking fixtures this week. Feels like Havertz out even if his fixture is better than others?

    I'm stumped. I've got 2FT and don't want to burn a transfer. 2.1m ITB.

Content with starting 11 but think I should use the free transfer somehow. Street to Dennis to strengthen bench and maybe catch a price rise?

    Ederson (Foster)
    Chilwell, Trent, Cancelo, James (Livra)
    Salah, Jota, Raph, ESR, Foden
    Toney (Antonio, Street)

Any move will have to be made by Thursday. Any suggestions?

both upgrades but I would say A is a bigger upgrade and priority.

Kane is a right pain to own. 12 odd million aswell, so properly draining the money pit. So tempted to ditch, even after 3 GWs (2,2,2)

I know loads will say, he'll improve and get returns 'soon'

Not sure my 464k rank can wait and waste time waiting for him. Especially when Cancelo & James are killing my rank week on week..

I hear you! see post below

i'm prioritising Cancelo first and banking on friendly fixtures given there really is a lack of go to forwards...regardless of price

I don't want Ronaldo either in a few weeks but will assess then when at least there are proper alternatives

btw i'm ranked 475k. plug the holes first then look to make other moves

You've posted about this already and not willing to take the advice so why ask.Just do what you think you need to do to keep sane next week. If that means getting in Cancelo then just do it.

Which "cash cow" should get sacrificed to fund Dias to Cancelo.
    2FT 0.2 itb

    Guiata
    Trent Dias Chilwell White
    Salah Foden Raph ESR
    Kane Antonio
    Steer Livra Gilmour Armstrong

    a) Armstrong to Dennis - unlikely to play the former anytime soon and Watford fixtures turn for the better in a few weeks
    b) Raph to Gallagher
    c) Antonio to Jimmy / Wilson (possibly then bringing him back ahead of 16)
    d) any other

A + B still leaves me 0.5 short of White to James but gotta start somewhere

Rough - Raphinha didn't play, but I only got Gabriel's zero points as my auto-sub, leaving Toney's 6 points on the bench.

Smooth - But my other 4 defenders scored 48 points between them and Cornet and captain Salah also did their bit, so my 80 points total was enough to put me back in the top 100k for only the second time this season.

Smooth: I played 5 at the back and got 57 points from my defence. An interesting experiment from someone who usually tries to go light at the back. I guess I'll keep this tactic for a while yet.

Rough: Nothing from anyone else in the team, other than the standard consistent points from perma-captain Salah

      The rough:
Foden, Livra, Antonio and Mbuemo not delivering.

      The smooth:
Starting Foster over Ramsdale, 41 points from 3 defenders, Jimenez.

81 points so can’t complain too much.

One of those where it turns late on. Around 4.30pm Saturday only thing of note was James points and Id benched Chilwell. Looked bleak.

Then ASM scored, Pool 3 returned, Cancelo today and Raph illness jam for Chilwell. 90 points.

Goes to show never moan till week is over. But I still moaned about Mbuembo hitting post yet again obviously as nobody is ever satisfied in FPL…

Overall a good gameweek. Raphinha not playing and Mbuemo and Son blank were the roughs. Got Antonio's 2 points off the bench.

Rough - my first bench option that has NOT come on for me is a tale of woe

      Week 7 - Mbuemo 8 points
      Week 8 - Livramento 6 points
      Week 9 - Smith Rowe 13 points
      Week 10 - Livramento 6 points
Week 11 - Cancelo 14 points (I played Rudiger instead, he got 2)
Week 12 - Rudiger 14 points (I playted Livramento instead, he got 1)

Took a 4 point hit to replace Raya with DdG and was ecstatic for his penalty save. Saturday was a good day with 72 points and only Antonio blanking out of my 9 players.

Then on Sunday.. Dias benched, Foden hauled off before 60 mins and Son blanked which meant Williams was auto-subbed in for his 1 pointer and only 4 points added. Overall a decent week but could've been so much more.

Smooth Saturday, 73 points. Salah(c), Toney, Rudiger, Trent, Ronaldo, Sarr and new recruit Jota returning straight away. All good apart from Sarr's pen taking!

Rough Sunday, 2 points with White(0) subbing for the benched Dias and Brownhill for Rapha...

So all out for 75. Decent and moved up around 80k to 364k.

Is anyone keen on getting a Spurs asset? Coz for me nothing from that game makes me want one. That shot from Son that hit the post was a crazy deflection, dunno why people on here mentioning that he hit the post without saying his shot wasn’t even on target to begin with.
