How Spurs’ FPL assets fared against Leeds in Gameweek 12

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 12 Scout Notes with analysis of Tottenham Hotspur v Leeds United.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, click here, while you can read up on Manchester City v Everton in more detail below.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2-1 LEEDS UNITED

  • Goals: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m), Sergio Reguilon (£5.0m) | Daniel James (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Lucas Moura (£6.4m), Eric Dier (£4.5m) | Jack Harrison (£5.6m)
  • Bonus: Hojbjerg x3, Stuart Dallas (£5.1m) x2, Dier x1, Reguilon x1, James x1

KANE AND SON BLANK

Spurs failed to manage a single shot on target in a lacklustre opening 45 minutes on Sunday, but improved after the break to claim a 2-1 win over Leeds United.

However, for Fantasy managers who had invested in either Son Heung-min (£10.4m) or Harry Kane (£12.2m), it was a frustrating afternoon, as neither player registered an attacking return.

Despite that, they did have shots deflected onto the woodwork, while Kane managed four goal attempts – including three efforts inside the box – which is better and offers encouragement for future weeks, especially given their immediate schedule: Burnley (a), Brentford (h) and Norwich City (h).

Harry Kane’s shot map v Leeds United in Gameweek 12

Following the win, Spurs are now seventh in the table, four points off the top four, which Antonio Conte discussed after the game:

“We want to fight, we want to improve the position in the table. At this moment, there are four teams that, for many reasons, because they are working with the same coach, they invested a lot of money, at this moment there are four teams and there is a gap. I’m not scared about this.

I trust in my players, I trust in my squad. We want to fight to stay close and fight for Champions League. Then if there’s one team that slips up this season or makes mistakes, we must be there to try to do our best.”

ROYAL V REGUILON

Given Conte’s history with attacking wing-backs, there has understandably been plenty of discussion in the community around Emerson Royal (£4.9m) and Sergio Reguilon (£5.0m), and who is in fact the better option for our FPL squads.

So, here’s a selection of key underlying stats from the Italian tactician’s first two games in charge:

“My first goal in the Premier League. We get three points. It’s unbelievable, it’s amazing. And now we continue. When we attack I have to have the mentality of a striker. The gaffer wants that. I have to arrive, arrive, arrive – and also defend. Now I’m dead but I’m so happy!” – Sergio Reguilon

GELHARDT MAKES FIRST PREMIER LEAGUE START

With Raphinha (£6.7m) and Rodrigo (£6.3m) surprise absentees on the day, due to illness and a minor foot injury respectively, budget forward Joe Gelhardt (£4.5m) was tasked with leading the line in his first Premier League start.

The youngster showed glimpses of his ability throughout, ending the game with four goal attempts, three shots in the box and six penalty area touches, though moving forward, you’d expect him to be used as more of an impact substitute once Rodrigo and Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) return.

“He showed personality, he could adapt to the rhythm of the game, they are things that are important.” – Marcelo Bielsa on £4.5m forward Joe Gelhardt

Elsewhere, Daniel James (£6.0m) bagged his second attacking return in his last three appearances, while Kalvin Phillips (£4.8m) lined-up in an unfamiliar centre-back role, which he and his manager touched on after the game:

“Llorente played from the right side to the centre against a player who makes a lot of diagonal [runs]. Phillips played as a right centre-back following Kane whenever he dropped, Pascal played as a left-back marking Moura and Cooper played his natural position of left centre-back. Perhaps you interpret that it was a back three, perhaps what you saw was correct but our intention was to play Llorente, Phillips, Cooper, Pascal with Dallas on the right, Klich and Forshaw in the centre and then after James on the right, Gelhardt in the centre and Harrison on the left.” – Marcelo Bielsa

“To be honest I don’t know why he did it. We wanted to be more defensive with their attacking threat. Me and Liam Cooper went man for man marking. It worked really well in the first half, but in the second half it’s just a lack of concentration that hurt us.” – Kalvin Phillips when asked why Bielsa chose to play him at the back

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Tanganga (Sanchez 68), Dier, Davies, Royal, Hojbjerg, Winks, Reguilon (Sessegnon 79), Moura (Alli 88), Son, Kane

Leeds XI: Meslier, Llorente, Phillips, Cooper, Struijk, Forshaw (Roberts 65), Dallas, James, Klich (Firpo 59), Harrison, Gelhardt (McKinstry 87)

Looks good, in fact very similar to me. I have ESR instead of Gallagher, which is a coin toss, but I like your team with Raph instead of mine (Toney). Guess I need to decide if I want a playing 3rd bench over Christmas, hmm.

    Ramsdale
    TAA | Cancelo | R James | Duffy
    Salah | Raphinha | Mbeumo
    Ronaldo | Vardy | Jiménez

    Steele | Livramento | Allan | Brownhill

    0.8 ITB. 2 FTs.
    16k OR.

    Trade ideas,
    Raphinha & Allan to Jota & Gilmour/4.4 (0.0 ITB).

I quite like this move, due to Raphinha being a probable trade post gw14 (fixture swing); allows me to catch the price rise(s) of Jota.
i.e. it is not just an equation of who scores more between the two over the next 3 GWs, as price rises cancel out the move post gw14.

Obviously, very much pending the availability of Jota, whilst too the return of Firmino.

    Thoughts?

I like those moves as Jota is a better pick than Raph going forward. Leeds are struggling.

This is correct, however, I am looking to shift from Jimenez after he plays Burnley, and hopefully, I'll have 2FTs to use (as I won't be making a trade next week).

I would be more inclined to sell Mbeumo than Raphinha. But i guess the budget doesn’t get you to Jota. Would you be open to sellling Vardy instead of Allan?

I would too but yes funds don't align.
I still think Brentford's fixtures are alright and they did score 3 goals on the weekend.

Probably not no, just because I have held him for a while now and through Chelsea, for me, that warrants keeping him for this next run of favourable fixtures.

    A) my keepers are McCarthy/Steele (rough fixtures)
    B) my defense is TAA Henry Duffy Livra Williams (no City or Chelsea or Spurs)

So I guess the question is: 4 at the back with TAA/Cancelo/James/Chilwell...or...3 (Cancelo, TAA, Chil/James)?

James looks so good. If he was classified as a MID or a FWD it would be a no brainer right?

    The only issue is rotation.

I think you need them all. Chilwell is averaging 9 points a game, second only to Salah, and James is next best after that.

If you don't have double Chelsea def you'd rather hope they don't keep a CS or only your defender gets attacking returns otherwise it's a red arrow.

It's coming sooner than that - GWs 14 and 17 and midweek PL schedules. Chelsea and City will be massively prone to rotation starting now.

If Jota is fit, I would do it. The reason is Chelsea have options now with Pulisic, Ziyech, Mount and Odoi etc all being able to somehow displace him. Pulisic was in the game for less than 10 min and made the difference, Havertz couldn't do it for over 60 min. Werner also coming back soon, and Lukaku to follow. I just can't see him getting more minutes let alone more points anytime soon.

Think fpl really needs to remodel its pricing or tweak the scoring system next year so that attacking full backs/wingbacks are competitively priced with mid-priced forwards which they have been outscoring for some years now

The thing is they have been ok recently, nothing to suggest a haul against Everton. Meanwhile other teams have been ticking off points, Gallagher, ESR, Jimi etc are all better options now. Sometimes we are blinded by fixtures but we ought to look at the way the team is performing, and they were lucky to come away with a draw against Newcastle.

Rage transferred Sarr out last night after his weeks of blanks, two missed penalties and bad fixtures after being very patient and holding so long as well. Think he'll be off pens now and might be injured anyway. Also think better value to be had elsewhere in Watford attack. Hope it doesn't come back to bite me but plumped for Cornet instead.

As last week I have tried to offer a few insights into the games I watched over the weekend. They are opinions only but it might help for those who don’t get to see all the matches: Part 1:
Foxes 0 Chelsea 3: The epitome of change in FPL this year is the emergence of wing backs other than Pool. Chelsea totally bossed midfield and no width offered by Leicester. Chelsea, as against Burnley, tore them apart from wide areas and free running down the centre of the field. With no Teilemans and Suyuncu being a waste of space, RJames and Chilly had a field day with Rudiger having a free role in the Leicester penalty area. Stay clear of Vardy. Come back Nacho!

Watford 4 Manu 1: 2 players can hold their heads up for ManU; Donny and Sancho. Stress ManU out with enthusiasm and they will capitulate. There was zero protection in midfield to look after the inept United defense. Maguire red carded and suffering with the pressure added to their woes. Dennis and King look like good enablers, especially if Sarr is sidelined.

Villa 2 Brighton 0: Watkins is back! A very even match with Villa making use of the wide areas. Manager bounce? I am not sure but Villa a lot more assured at the back and letting Mings move forward too. I can see Brighton continuing to struggle up front and Watkins showing class and energy will surpass Ings IMO. Douglas Luiz makes a big difference.

Burnley 3 Palace 3: If you want a Palace asset, Benteke could be the way to go. He looks like his old, more commanding self. The first time I have seen Palace bullied at the back since Chelsea. Gallagher must get a new set of batteries soon. Cornet is a class finisher and did it again. He is in my team next week along with Guaita and Benteke maybe. Forget about Burnley clean sheets.

Newcastle 3 Brentford 3: Not sure of the quality but I enjoyed the game for sure. Mbeumo another woodwork miss, albeit offside; Toney further forward but lucky with the goal. (Played well though) ASM is going to run riot under Eddie Howe. Don’t expect clean sheets from Newcastle but they will score.

Norwich 2 Soton 1: Are we seeing cracks at Soton? McCarthy was awful and the reason Soton lost. People will be tempted by Puki but not me. The sooner Braja plays in place of Armstrong the better. Commenting on this game is boring to be frank. (I fell asleep)

Wolves 1 Hammers 0: Wolves were a far superior side and Podence made a difference. Bowen was head and shoulders the best Hammers player IMO. Antonio contributions slipping but so was his performance today. The teams play a similar game and Wolves were just better at it. Jimenez could have had double figures and at his price is worth keeping, even against top sides. Hwang out wide and will not get many chances IMO.

Pool 4 Gunners 0: Welcome to the real world Arsenal. They could have scored a couple due to Pool’s high line but Pool were at their attacking best and could have scored a few more. TAA is the best value “forward” in the game. Robbo could struggle to get his place back. With ESR all can see he is good but will he get many opportunities? VVD is back!

Citeh 3 Everton 0: Embarrassed to be a Toffee. A walk in the park for Citeh with Cancelo just about everywhere. I am sure Foden was carrying an injury. He was playing wide and was generally less effective. He left the field early for Mahrez after another knock. Sterling always in the mix and Laporte picking up an early yellow. TBH I would say Bernardo the safest option for points ATM. Gundo promising too. Injury to Gray and looks bad with Richarlison getting a 1 game ban next week. Back against Everton!

Spurs 2 Leeds 1: A game of 2 halves. Leeds energy stopped Spurs in their tracks. Harrison back to form IMO, helped by Forshaw and Phillips centre back. Raphina ill. Spurs wing backs too deep and ineffectual. James played well too using his pace. Game turned on its head second half. Reguilon scoring but not due to being a wing back. I can see rotation for wide Spurs players. Sessegnon is a spoiler in that position. Kane and Son mostly anonymous. Gerhardt worth a short term punt. Leeds not as fit as last year. Kane dead on his feet too.

Excuse the grammar and I hope you get something from this.

That's for sure lol. In your opinion, from past gw, who is going to be our future potential game changer, Jimmy, Antonio, Benteke or Watkins? Last three gws I'm seriously thinking about Watkins, if he can gets last season form.

watkins showed last year what he was about. Even playing wide he is effective and fixtures are not an issue with him. I took a punt last week and so far it has paid off.

that's great to hear. I have him in my draft team since gw1, hope he is going to return for patience. I'm thinking to change my forwards completely in next 3 gws, current Jimmy Armstrong Willson --> Watkins Dennis Antonio maybe, there is still time for Antonio until gw16 to see how does he perform

Great stuff and got me thinking. I'm dithering over Vardy to Benteke but Foxes have good fixtures. Sounds like Vardy's a busted flush whoever they're up against.

As above Watkins and Benteke are my watchlist favorites atm. Cornet in midfield could be a rank changer too. I have harping on about Cornet early on but never took my own advice.

I'm looking to dump Sarr immediately and Raph soon. I was prioritising Jota but you're making me consider Bilva as first in. With a strong bench I can manage Bilva and/or Foden being rested. ESR to Cornet further down the line is in my thoughts too.

Armstrong has been a good performer on the whole so I think that is a little bit harsh considering Broja cameo didn't exact stake any claims.

As for the goalkeeping situation, it is a difficult one.
Forster's performances in the cup were very strong, however, it is widely known he will be leaving at the end of the season when his contract expires. I think it would have to get pretty poor with McCarthy for a rotation to be made, just my thoughts.

And no I don't believe it is "cracks"

Soton should have been at least a goal for the good at HT and yes, McCarthy threw both goals into his own net. Poor individual performances definitely but how they walked away with a loss is quite staggering considering Norwich hardly threatened.

Based on history or last season?

Last season, yes. Southampton's squad was ridiculously thin, coupled with a mass of injuries, yes they imploded.
Covid congesting of fixtures made it even worse.

A viewpoint only. I hear you though. Broja will open up the game for us all. i saw cracks for the first time with Soton. It could be a once off but McCarthy did this last year and did not cover himself in glory.

Of course, Southampton are interested in signing a GK that has been well reported.

Interest is there in Sam Johnstone with his contract expiring at WBA, however, who knows maybe he re-signs if/when promotion is achieved.

Either way, a new GK will be signed for next season (with Forster leaving), January unlikely.

I really fear that before long everyone is going to have the same defence of TAA, Cancelo, James and Chillwell. With that togther with everyone captaining Salah, FPL is going to become a very boring and unenjoyable game. Where are we going to find an edge?

Just an idea to throw out there...

In some cricket fantasy games I play (IPL & world cup tournaments through dream11), your VC scores 1.5x pts. VC is pretty useless in FPL (in my experience so far) & I think this would be an interesting addition to allow for more diverse captaincy choices (safe captain like Salah, more punty VC?)

Son is a strong player too.

Get rid of white or Livramento for James

          White will sell for 4.4
          Livramento will sell for 4.3

          Have ramsdale in goal

Hold rudiger or move to james to have ‘the big 4’

I’m leaning towards hold, could be nice to have the most nailed on defender during busy xmas period

It will also mean I won’t be able to do sarr to esr or Ronaldo to Kane or other moves up the pitch unless it’s for a hit

It’s fine but I think I’d play hwang against Norwich

Either way you are still likely to have bench points

You can’t on the one hand promote a strong squad because of rotation and then get upset when you have bench points like some on here seem to do

If fit and the fixtures fall, you can BB.
