Three budget FPL differentials to consider for Gameweek 13 and beyond

Gameweek 13 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned and somewhat unfashionable picks at Watford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Burnley who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing.

JOSHUA KING

  • FPL ownership: 4.1%
  • Price: £5.6m
  • GW13-17 fixtures: lei | CHE | MCI | bre | bur

Joshua King (£5.6m) has slotted seamlessly into Watford’s attack this season, and has particularly impressed following the arrival of Claudio Ranieri.

Despite a disappointing loan spell at Everton last term, where he could only find 138 Premier League minutes, he has since thrived as the Hornets main centre-forward. Prior to Ranieri’s appointment, he assisted three times against Norwich City and Newcastle United, and has followed that up with four goals in four games under the Italian, including a hat-trick at Goodison Park. It could have been more, too, as he won the opening penalty against Manchester United last weekend, only for Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) to miss.

Notably, over the last four Gameweeks no player in any position – not even Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) – can better him for goal attempts (17) or big chances (seven), while only the Egyptian has more penalty box touches in that time.

Life at Vicarage Road has been anything but dull since Ranieri’s arrival. In his five games in charge, Watford have scored nine goals and conceded 10, with a visit to a Leicester City side up next who have failed to keep a single clean sheet since the opening day. In fact, the Foxes’ 21 goals conceded is the joint-third worst in the division, while the expected goals (xG) tally is only slightly better. The schedule to follow is admittedly tough, but eases from Gameweek 16 onwards, with games against Brentford (a), Burnley (a), Crystal Palace (h), Wolverhampton Wanderers (a) and West Ham United (h) before the end of the year.

King has delivered a string of impressive displays of late, and given his appealing longer-term schedule, could be the pick of the budget forwards over the festive period.

TARIQ LAMPTEY

Why Duffy was benched and Foden’s fine form: FPL notes from Brighton v Man City 2
  • FPL ownership: 0.8%
  • Price: £4.4m
  • GW13-17 fixtures: LEE | whu | sou | TOT | WOL

Tariq Lamptey (£4.4m) has been Brighton and Hove Albion’s stand-out performer since returning from injury, and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet against Aston Villa last weekend, when he was denied by a fine save from Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

The youngster was substituted late on, with Villa scoring twice soon after his departure, as Graham Potter continues to manage his recovery following his long-term hamstring problem. As a result, he surely won’t start every game in December, but providing you have a strong bench, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue, especially given his budget price tag.

Lamptey’s positioning since returning from injury has been hugely encouraging, playing very far up the right flank and often hugging the touchline. Because of that, since making his first start in Gameweek 11, amongst all defenders, only Reece James (£6.1m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) have touched the ball more often in the opponent’s penalty area, with his four shots in the box only bettered by Chelsea’s wing-backs and team-mate Antonio Rudiger (£5.9m).

Albion now face a Leeds United side who have struggled in attack all season, scoring just seven Premier League goals in seven games in the absence of Patrick Bamford (£7.7m). Encouragingly, for those considering investing, their meeting with Marcelo Bielsa’s side marks a reasonably favourable run, too, with matches against Southampton (a), Wolverhampton Wanderers (h) and Brentford (h) in the coming weeks.

Lamptey has been a real threat down the wing for Brighton in recent matches, and with an ownership of just 0.8%, could be an effective defensive differential.

CHRIS WOOD

Scout Notes 4
  • FPL ownership: 1.3%
  • Price: £6.7m
  • GW13-17 fixtures: TOT | wol | new | WHU | WAT

Chris Wood (£6.7m) may have had a slow start to the season, but has now netted two goals in his last three appearances.

The New Zealand international has been a model of consistency since joining Burnley from Leeds United back in August 2017, scoring at least 10 goals in each of his four top-flight campaigns.

This season, he has posted team-leading totals for goal attempts, shots in the box, efforts on target, big chances and penalty area touches, while his performances over the last three Gameweeks have helped his team beat Brentford and take points from in-form Chelsea and Crystal Palace. That’s coincided with Wood and Maxwel Cornet (£6.1m) being paired together up front, a period which has seen Sean Dyche’s side score more goals than any other team bar Liverpool.

Looking ahead to Gameweek 13, Wood could find some joy against a Tottenham Hotspur backline which is still adapting to a new style of play under Antonio Conte, while fixtures to follow against Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Newcastle United (a), West Ham United (h) and Watford (h) offer further encouragement that he can kick-on.

Burnley appear to have moved up a gear in recent weeks, with more confidence on the ball, and given that Wood has scored two in his last three, could be a nice differential pick for our frontlines.

    Wildcard team:

    Sanchez, (Steele)

    Salah, Foden, Jota, Gallagher, (Gilmour)
    Kane, Antonio, (Davis)

Thanks Zenith. It's a good shout but I really like Foden & don't trust Tottenham defence. Think I'm happy with 4 premium defenders in terms of team structure financially.

good but that bench is so poor that you may end up with just one starter and rotation risked players like Cancelo, James, Rudiger, Foden, Jota, (Gilmour) (Davis) just as we run into a huge congestion period

I would restructure and get a playing third striker and a nailed 5th mid.

      Probably 343 something like this

      Sanchez, (Steele)
TAA, Cancelo, James, (Johnson/cheap but nailed )(Livramento)
      Salah, Foden, Jota, Gallagher, (Brownhill/Biss)
      Kane, Antonio, Denis/King /Hwang

Coufal has been fit since GW10, and started in Europa + Cup matches since, while Johnson keeps starting in EPL

Johnson starts in EPL until he plays badly. But once he does have a bad game or two, I'm sure he's dropped for Coufal

Something similar to Tavares vs Tierney atm

Thanks Hotdogs for tea! Great advice & my bench was my reservation. I want 4 ATB & don't see value in the strikers at present. I think Gilmour is to good in Norwich's team to be dropped. You're right on rotation risk but I think the majority are nailed. Risk they get rested on the same GW versus not compromising on my starting 11. I'm happy to gamble for a few weeks to get the players in that I want. (James over Alonso & Jota value is too good to ignore.

Was considering Livramento to Johnson to free up £0.3mil to upgrade elsewhere.

Is Johnson nailed with Coufal waiting on the bench?

Really appreciate the time / detail you've taken in your response.

      Many thanks mate. 🙂

    1FT, 0.4 in bank

    A) Chilwell to James

    C) Chilwell and Foden to James and Jota (-4)
    D) Something else

Yes Christensen & Havertz don't offer value with Lukaku back.

Marcal a rotation risk? Wouldn't want to play Sissoko. Livramento fixtures aren't great from memory.

    In short get:
    A. Alonso + smith-row for chilwell + gray
    Or
    B. just do chillwell to James?

Both moves I'll be priced out if I dont do them.

    Thanks

    Team is
    Sanchez
    Chillwell - cancelo - TAA - reguilion - livermento
    Salah - Foden

    Steele - Gray - Hayden - gilmour

Tuchel will likely give an indication in tomorrow's presser. He was on the bench mid week but Tuchel said only ready to come on at the end of the game but he didn't play at all.
If I had to bet either way right now, I'd guess probably not.

    Ramsdale
    TAA | Cancelo | R James | Duffy
    Salah | Jota* | Mbeumo
    Ronaldo | Vardy | Jiménez

    Steele | Livramento | Gilmour* | Brownhill

    0.8 ITB, 2 FTs.
    16k OR.

    Trade ideas,
GW13: Raphinha & Allan to Jota & Gilmour (0.0 ITB).
    GW14: Hold
    GW15: Jiménez & Brownhill/Gilmour to B Silva/City mid and 4.4 FWD (maybe)

I like the move this GW due to Raphinha being a probable trade GW16 (fixture swing); Jota is also about to go up 0.1, and out of budget.

    Thoughts?

I think the upside is greater.
Allows me to be aggressive also with Jimenez in two weeks time, Raphinha I will have already moved on correctly or incorrectly.

Folks are moving Raph and Foden on for Jota, forgetting how frustrating he was earlier this season, and he's still playing the same way

My aggressive move is to hold Foden. Yours could be to hold Raph, who's scored in his last two matches and has a higher points per match ratio than Jota this season

          1. Gabbiadini
            • 6 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

That is true, yes, but I think a points per minute ratio would be a better representation. The landscape has changed with Firmino's injury.
Ideally, I would hold Raphinha and find funds a different way, however, this is not possible at this moment with my structure. I also am not sure whether I would hold him beyond gw15, it is a punty play yes.

Sure Henry or Gallagher wouldn't improve your points better than Jota over Raph?

Maybe that move happen in GW16 instead?

I won't knock Jota as an asset, but I won't spend two transfers to take him over a fit Raphinha or Foden. They're probably at the same level in likely FPL points, so it's a sideways move to me. That's why I keep talking about improving the Duffy and Mbeumo spots in your XI, for more points

              1. Gabbiadini
                • 6 Years

                No, personally not.

Maybe it is recency bias but Duffy has very good shots in the box numbers (aerial threat) and does Brighton not have a better defence than Brentford?
I can see how he may be perceived as slightly unfashionable, being a CB compared to a wingback selection.

As for Gallagher v Mbeumo, I still like Mbeumo.
Points in the past are points I cannot get and on the face of it, I still prefer the ST over a player in a midfield 3.

I definitely did consider other options will my 2FTs, but these were not really two players I was considering.
I do appreciate your thoughts, it is intriguing to see what angles other people look at it.

                      Touché. Good luck

Always good to have the logic behind your decisions clear before making 'em

You can then revise the decisions on the merit of their logic later, rather than just the outcome

Mbeumo's average position is higher than that of Gallagher's, fact.
Further, Mbeumo is primarily Brentford's most attacking player.

I'm saying it's good to know the logic behind your decisions, so you can revise the outcome based on their thinking process rather than just points

It helps me avoid blaming myself when someone gets a lucky deflection that leads to a goal, for instance

I'm not against your decision. I think the logic has merit. I'm saying it's good to make decisions this way, not based on stuff like fear

I'm far more interested in Duffy to Henry or Mbeumo to Gallagher. Improve actual problems in your XI

Personally, I am not convinced by Brentford defence.
Duffy I still don't actually believe is a bad selection whereby he is still in the starting XI, he has only missed the solitary game.
Mbeumo, yes has not registered the points but he is a sub 6 midfielder playing OOP. I still like this option, the fixtures to are not bad.

Tbh think you haven't got the best balance of funds, so far this season value is most in the defenders, followed by mids and then forwards. 23m on Ronaldo and Vardy seems a big use of funds for meh output at the moment and double fodder mids seems a bit wasteful when a number of slightly more premium options are delivering well (Gallagher, ESR, Raph etc.)

      1. Gabbiadini
        • 6 Years

It is a good point yes, but why trade Ronaldo or Vardy with their upcoming fixtures?
If I didn't like their fixtures then yes, I would be looking at a trade.
It is about projecting forward not so much looking back at what has happened, Chilwell now is also injured.

Fixtures are tricky in FPL. I held Ronaldo on the same basis for the Watford game last GW. Maybe it works out better for Vardy, but he's had 3 shots in his last 4 matches while Raphinha has had 16 for a 4m higher price.

            yes, this is true.
Vardy has looked very poor in his previous outings I totally agree.

Should Vardy turn his form over these next few weeks he seems to me like a longer hold than Raphinha in my team.

Look they may do fine but I haven't been convinced based on what we know, from this season.

In the spirit of the article, here are my three budget players for the next 2 to 4 GWs:

Rico Henry (1.5%): playing at wingback with 2 goals on the bounce, facing the two main crisis teams next - Everton and Spurs. It's then Leeds and Watford next, so some more green 🙂

Cornet (2.4%): the transfer spark who made Dyche an attacking manager out of the blue this season. Spurs, Wolves and Newcastle don't seem in the mood to stop this rampant Burnley attacker, whose goals per match ratio is way up there

Benteke (2.4%): his stats are *screaming*. 16 shots from 3.3 matches, 4 goals in his last 4 starts. Focal point of this buzzing new fearless Viera team. Fixture list continues until at least GW20. There'll always be the caveat of his risk of being benched for Edouard in the big games (like Man U in GW15) so be wary of those, but the upside. My word

Agree. Got Cornet in this week and looking at Tekkers next. Henry definitely going under the radar but hard to fit in with all the excellent defenders around.

PS - You should write articles. I find your comments and insight on here top notch.

        Very kind, thanks! 🙂

I'll be open to writing for FFScout, but I don't have a non-controversial topic yet 😀

I agree with Henry being hard to fit in, but he might be the answer for those who'll risk 5 ATB for one more GW, or those who are taking funds forward for Jota

Yeah, I think for most (myself included) Livra would be the makeweight for Henry. Not sure I want to get rid of Livra yet but given the fixture comparison, Henry looks better on paper.
Suppose a few would also be driven to keep Livra due to the value tied up in him, but that doesn’t particularly matter much to me.
Food for thought certainly for the next 4 GWS

    Current team:

    Ramsdale (Foster)
Trent, Cancelo, Emerson Royal (Christensen, Livra)
ESR, Salah, Mbuemo, Raphinha (Douglas Luiz)
    Vardy Kane Toney

Brought Trent in for Chilwell last night to avoid price movements.
Currently very tempted to take a -12 and get Christensen, Mbuemo and Vardy out for R James, Jota and Benteke/King as these are the options I'd prefer this week and in the long term

Is this extremely dumb considering Vardy has Watford up next? Ever since I got him in GW9 he has looked absolutely hopeless......

Don't touch your team any further

You'd probably remove Kane before Vardy, by this time next week

Transfer priority next GW should be Mbeumo + Chris > Alonso + Gilmour, imo. Your team is nicely set up for 4-3-3 for the foreseeable

Think I may keep as is this week, then injuries depending do those moves for a -8 for the following game week. Fixtures this week for my team seem very nice even if the form isn't exactly there, just praying there's no mega haul from James/Jota and that Vardy decides to turn up at last

    Best move here chaps?

    A) Chilwell -> Alonso (5.6)
    B) Chilwelll -> Reguilon (5.1)
    C) Chilwell -> Dier/White (4.5/4.4) and rotate with Livra

The extra cash could bolster the bench over the festive period, eg with C), Brownhill -> Bowen/Gallagher/Cornet or Davis -> Benteke/King

    Ramsdale
    Trent, Cancelo, James, Chilwell*
    Salah, Jota, Raphina, Saka
    Kane, Antonio

    Foster, Livramento, Brownhill, Davis

I’m weighing up A or B. I think they’re both excellent options, but as you have James, I think I’d lean Reg (especially after the main potential threat to his festive minutes did himself zero favours tonight!)

    Hey DZers

Pretty happy with this starting XI. Bench order correct? Thinking I may fancy Cornet against Spurs over Dennis as 1st on bench. Thoughts?

    Sanchez
    Trent James Cancelo Reguilon

    Vardy Jimi

    Steele Dennis Cornet Livra

That’s interesting. I don’t have Regi in my team for the clean sheets and Burnley have been conceding since they seem to have become a lot more attacking. It’s a 50/50 I suppose.

    Hi guys.
Well have had to play aggressively of late and low & behold it's working out for once, 3 straight greens so have kept the trend and done
Chillwell + Raphinha > Alonoso + Jota for almost exact funds.
Raphinha could of been worth keeping but i think he has been fortunate to be honest, Jota in a much more fluid team.

Set up for a 451 this GW, look GTG?

    Sanchez
    Alonso - TAA - Cancelo - James
    Gallagher - Jota - Son - Salah - ESR
    Vardy

I'm worried about the rush to buy him based on one goal and one assist in the league from 10 starts, and 1G 0A under Conte from 4 starts, with that goal coming against the lowest ranked team in Europa Conference League

I'd much rather miss his next haul than have him for the 5 blanks it took for his first haul
