Three budget FPL differentials to consider for Gameweek 13 and beyond

Gameweek 13 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned and somewhat unfashionable picks at Watford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Burnley who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing.

JOSHUA KING

  • FPL ownership: 4.1%
  • Price: £5.6m
  • GW13-17 fixtures: lei | CHE | MCI | bre | bur

Joshua King (£5.6m) has slotted seamlessly into Watford’s attack this season, and has particularly impressed following the arrival of Claudio Ranieri.

Despite a disappointing loan spell at Everton last term, where he could only find 138 Premier League minutes, he has since thrived as the Hornets main centre-forward. Prior to Ranieri’s appointment, he assisted three times against Norwich City and Newcastle United, and has followed that up with four goals in four games under the Italian, including a hat-trick at Goodison Park. It could have been more, too, as he won the opening penalty against Manchester United last weekend, only for Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) to miss.

Notably, over the last four Gameweeks no player in any position – not even Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) – can better him for goal attempts (17) or big chances (seven), while only the Egyptian has more penalty box touches in that time.

Life at Vicarage Road has been anything but dull since Ranieri’s arrival. In his five games in charge, Watford have scored nine goals and conceded 10, with a visit to a Leicester City side up next who have failed to keep a single clean sheet since the opening day. In fact, the Foxes’ 21 goals conceded is the joint-third worst in the division, while the expected goals (xG) tally is only slightly better. The schedule to follow is admittedly tough, but eases from Gameweek 16 onwards, with games against Brentford (a), Burnley (a), Crystal Palace (h), Wolverhampton Wanderers (a) and West Ham United (h) before the end of the year.

King has delivered a string of impressive displays of late, and given his appealing longer-term schedule, could be the pick of the budget forwards over the festive period.

TARIQ LAMPTEY

Why Duffy was benched and Foden’s fine form: FPL notes from Brighton v Man City 2
  • FPL ownership: 0.8%
  • Price: £4.4m
  • GW13-17 fixtures: LEE | whu | sou | TOT | WOL

Tariq Lamptey (£4.4m) has been Brighton and Hove Albion’s stand-out performer since returning from injury, and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet against Aston Villa last weekend, when he was denied by a fine save from Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

The youngster was substituted late on, with Villa scoring twice soon after his departure, as Graham Potter continues to manage his recovery following his long-term hamstring problem. As a result, he surely won’t start every game in December, but providing you have a strong bench, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue, especially given his budget price tag.

Lamptey’s positioning since returning from injury has been hugely encouraging, playing very far up the right flank and often hugging the touchline. Because of that, since making his first start in Gameweek 11, amongst all defenders, only Reece James (£6.1m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) have touched the ball more often in the opponent’s penalty area, with his four shots in the box only bettered by Chelsea’s wing-backs and team-mate Antonio Rudiger (£5.9m).

Albion now face a Leeds United side who have struggled in attack all season, scoring just seven Premier League goals in seven games in the absence of Patrick Bamford (£7.7m). Encouragingly, for those considering investing, their meeting with Marcelo Bielsa’s side marks a reasonably favourable run, too, with matches against Southampton (a), Wolverhampton Wanderers (h) and Brentford (h) in the coming weeks.

Lamptey has been a real threat down the wing for Brighton in recent matches, and with an ownership of just 0.8%, could be an effective defensive differential.

CHRIS WOOD

Scout Notes 4
  • FPL ownership: 1.3%
  • Price: £6.7m
  • GW13-17 fixtures: TOT | wol | new | WHU | WAT

Chris Wood (£6.7m) may have had a slow start to the season, but has now netted two goals in his last three appearances.

The New Zealand international has been a model of consistency since joining Burnley from Leeds United back in August 2017, scoring at least 10 goals in each of his four top-flight campaigns.

This season, he has posted team-leading totals for goal attempts, shots in the box, efforts on target, big chances and penalty area touches, while his performances over the last three Gameweeks have helped his team beat Brentford and take points from in-form Chelsea and Crystal Palace. That’s coincided with Wood and Maxwel Cornet (£6.1m) being paired together up front, a period which has seen Sean Dyche’s side score more goals than any other team bar Liverpool.

Looking ahead to Gameweek 13, Wood could find some joy against a Tottenham Hotspur backline which is still adapting to a new style of play under Antonio Conte, while fixtures to follow against Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Newcastle United (a), West Ham United (h) and Watford (h) offer further encouragement that he can kick-on.

Burnley appear to have moved up a gear in recent weeks, with more confidence on the ball, and given that Wood has scored two in his last three, could be a nice differential pick for our frontlines.

      Is "neither" an option?

Rudiger vs Man U's set piece weakness

White might not keep clean sheets, but Spurs is just as likely to avoid clean sheets. Reg has the attacking threat though, so I'd prioritise that over losing Rudiger now

Maybe Rudiger to Alonso next GW instead?

    Hey DZ!

    Usual team/plan update:

340k OR. 1 FT spent on Antonio to Benteke. 2.5m ITB

    McCarthy
    TAA Cancelo (VeeCe)James
    (C)Salah Son Foden Gallagher
    Jesus Benteke Hwang

    Matthews • Brownhill Livra Chilwell

If Foden's out for one or two GWs, I'll use my bench (Brownhill GW13, Hwang GW14). If Pep says it's any longer than that in his presser today, I'll switch to Jota for -4

Chilwell to Alonso for free next GW, won't even lose price on that switch. Alonso then starts over Hwang

I'll get Guaita for free for Matthews in GW17, instead of a hit for GW13. Trying to go hitless except when obvious

Plan's still rolling, except I can now afford to keep Livra over getting Johnson: Son + Hwang > CR7 + Gilmour in GW16; Jesus > Antonio in GW18, Benteke > DCL in GW19; AFCON madness from GW20, all for free.

As always, I'm ready to adapt as things change

    Good luck folks 🙂

Just realised that the more sensible move, if Foden is out for only GW13 ± GW14, is Chilwell to Alonso for -4

Since I expect Alonso vs Man U to match/beat Brownhill vs anyone for points

Pep's been more predictable than usual this season

For instance, his GW12 presser confirmed to me that Grealish was out but Foden was likely to start, even though Pep's words were as vague as possible

I think Pep will leave it open to interpretation again, and I'm ready to trust my interpretation. If there's enough doubt but it's short term (like Grealish in for GWs 11 and 12), I'm getting Alonso for a hit this week. If it sounds ominous, like Torres for GW5, I'm getting Jota

          fair call
i've taken a hit already chilwell to james so will trust my bench (Dennis Gilmour White) and if he's out longer then Jota can wait a week.

Bench Rudi (not feeling good about it) ?

I presume it comes down to Rudiger or Townsend.
It a tough one given the fixtures
but neither Eve or West ham have been great lately and it’s been a long time since Townsend got a return - 5 blanks - so that might swing it to starting Rudiger

Is this strong enough for the busy period ahead or too many risks?
Either ESR or Raphina would usually start in a probable 442. I still need a hit or 2 to get to this team.

    Guaita

    TAA Cancelo James Alonso

    Salah Jota Foden Raphina

    Jesus Antonio

    Steele ESR Regullion Dennis

You have the best bench I've seen so you're set for a lot of rotation. This isn't risky at all over the break. Personally I wouldn't spread the funds that much but to each their own.

Thanks for the reply I agree with you that the funds are probably spread too thin but I don’t see much headaches I know the 10 I want to play most weeks. I have taken way too many hits this year and I am trying to minimize the hits I take to get the ones I really want now. That path just happens to end up with a pretty strong bench if that makes any sense:)

I think the second premium spot is coming back

Actually, it didn't die: it went from Bruno to Ronaldo to Mané, but folks simply won't buy Mané... Including me 😀

With this in mind, I'm working towards this *playing* bench, rather than a heavy one:

      McCarthy/Guaita • Livra Gilmour Brownhill

A nailed 4-3-3, with Livra coming in with 1 to 6 points or the 4.4 mids coming in with 2 points, counting as a blank for my rotated/injured asset that GW

Thanks all. I was benching points with a strong bench and as soon as I weaken it I only got 10 out so this is a difficult balance to strike.
I think the bench might be a bit too strong but my first 11 will see rotation so hoping that I can get more than 2 pointers off the bench when required.

Alonso will probably score more points than everybody else bar Salah, TAA, Cancelo and James

Gallagher is still a great asset in the midfield though. That's why "both" is the answer. But if forced, Alonso wins it by some distance

Because it's 4 CS and 6 goal points for an inside forward on free kicks playing for one of the league's best defences and attacks

Definite roll from me. I am trying to get Foden and Antonio into my team over the next 2-3 weeks. Antonio has a few bad fixtures on the way but they turn really good again after that. Foden is probably ok and if he is I see him as a season keeper, if starting day more than 80% of games and I think he will. He offers way too much value this might just be his breakthrough PL and FPL season

      Dias + Jota + King vs Saka + Antonio + B. Davies

I would go with the Jota option. Dias is a solid pick as well and allows for an easier move to an Alonso or Regi if they start firing

Some hot takes while I'm wasting time at work. I do 100% believe all of these, although not sure I will follow through on any of them.

** Everyone is desperate to get Jota. He's going to return regularly... but at about the same level he did at the start of the year, when everyone hated owning Jota. Would back Raph to roughly match him for 3-4 weeks, and Foden to score more if fit.

** Cancelo is nailed, but nailed players at Man City still get spelled occasionally. Like maybe in the next 1-2 games.

** Selling Vardy for anyone who costs more than him is crazy. Buying high, selling low scenario for 2nd rate premiums. Could argue the same with Antonio, but there are better options at this price level than at the premium price. And Antonio has trickier fixtures than Vardy.

** Defender tiers are TAA/James/Cancelo, then Alonso, then daylight. Reguilon is not a differential in that conversation. Would rather get a 4.5 DEF and save the 0.6 to use elsewhere.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk 🙂

      Agreed

My fear of a Cancelo rest is pushing me towards Chilwell to Alonso for -4, as I have Livra coming in if one of my defenders misses out, to join McCarthy as my keeper. Possible double negative points vs Liverpool there

        • 3 Years

Taking a hit for fear of the player who's started every PL and CL game this season feels very far from the optimal play. McCarthy and Livramento are unlikely to get negative points.

Chilwell to Alonso is happening this GW or next

I'm not adding Livra to McCarthy vs Liverpool. Not for my team. I'll take a hit to prevent that

Note that I have Foden too, so I'm not comfortable. I understand that others play the game differently, so that's fine

But I might hold these knees. This will go down to the wire

I think the Jota rush is fuelled by his last goal, while GWs 1 to 11 have been swiftly forgotten

A great asset if your team has an easy route, but too wasteful with few assists for the mad rush, to me. Same tier as Raph and maybe Foden for points, imo

              Goals > Assists

Significantly better than Raph for me, one plays for Leeds one plays for Liverpool.

He actually overperforms his xG, so certainly not wasteful - just creates so many chances for himself that people's minds are warped by the biases of the eye test due to focusing on the misses. Has a fair few decent finishes in his locker to make up for it, as he showed last weekend.

Jota has always been more than fine. I think he's a great option. Didn't stop loads of complaints about owning him over the first 11 weeks of the season. Won't stop people doing it again.

    2. NABIL - FPL otai

Agree with almost everything. I'm still 50/50 about getting Jota, as always. Should prosper, but doesn't like the fact that too dependent on Firmino availability and get hooked around 75th minute almost all the time.

Upgrade Vardy can work if you're lucky enough. Kane has the fixtures.

Liking the defender tiers. However you fail to mention that Alonso is just another rotation worry. CHE's deep squad means I think he's not nailed for every game during the hectic schedule even with Chilwell out. But I like the idea of going cheap and use 0.6 elsewhere.

      1. Casual Player
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

If Foden is still a doubt I'll probably get Jota this week. My hesitation to now has been not trusting the Firmino injury timetable, but there's so few MID options I like I'll probably just chase the upside.

Just expecting a lot of knee jerking and complaining with any blank. Plus there's going to be a rotation benching for Origi at some point that'll send people wild.

I don't think any Chelsea and Man City players are nailed. But if you can get 7-8 starts out of 10 from James or Alonso its probably worth it. I think that's feasible.

Alonso is more nailed now than Chilwell was a week ago.

Will soon replace Chilwell in the template, but for now players are understandably flocking to James.

FPL has become a 7 man game - Cancelo, TAA, Salah and James will have such EO their points will have a minor effect on the rank.

For those plus Jota and Alonso will be huge so discounting those and the keeper it’s really a 4 man game for now.

Chelsea back 3 - some help please
And let me know if this is totally wacky.

This might sound mad but how about Chalobah at 4.8 as a third Chelsea defender in our team but first on the bench.
7th highest scoring defender but only played about half the games.

3 spots Rudiger has one pretty much nailed.
Christensen plays lots but doesn’t have Chalobah goal threat
Azpilicueta not played the last few PL games at all
Sarr only seems to play when both Rudiger and Thiago are out
But Thiago might be the kicker here. Surely at 37 years of age he had to see some rotation thus increasing the chance of a Chalobah start.
(Ok he didn’t look 37 making that goal line clearance in CL but ...)

So plan is Chalobah first bench and if he doesn’t play second bench comes on instead. What ye think?

How would Chalobah compare to someone like Regullion who I am also considering for first spot on the bench.

    1. Holmes
      • 10 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

Since its for a bench spot, I dont mind the risk.

Generally you have to get nailed players for bench but I doubt we would need 3 auto-subs in any week, so its alright.

Yeah as per comments below you would need to get lucky. But there is a lot of luck in this game.
Imagine the scenario where James and Alonso have hauled and add to this with Chalobah points from the bench!! We will not think about the last minute consolation goal conceded 🙂

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years

Not getting a team's backup player when going into the fixture congestion

You need a lot of luck for that to work out the one or two times you'd need your sub

Neither Chalobah nor Christensen has nailed the spot during Azpi's absence so far, and Tuchel has said the absence was due to match fitness. In his presser after the UCL match, he said he brought Azpi on instead of Alonso because they had already planned to bring him on for James, to "finally give Azpi some minutes" after his injury recovery

I don't think the RCB slot is anywhere near guaranteed for Chalobah. I also don't think Azpi is done for at RCB. That's still speculation, mind

There are other assets. Have you considered Rico Henry's stats and fixtures?

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Thanks Azpilicueta still being a major factor might blow this out of the water and I also see what say about needing to get lucky with this strategy. Henry I probably won’t go to just because it’s Brentford.
Any opinion on Ben Johnston to save some cash or is a return for Coufal too much of a concern?

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years

Look again at Henry, imo. Stats and fixtures. I understand the defensive worry though

Yeah, Johnson's fixtures are horrible for now. If he's still nailed over Coufal by the time things clear up, I'd support the switch

Actually, if you can just see beyond this GW for Livra, he's still perfectly fine too 🙂
