Brentford v Man Utd postponed as Gameweek 17 hit by Covid cases

The Gameweek 17 clash between Brentford and Manchester United was officially postponed by the Premier League late on Monday evening.

This is the third Gameweek in five in which a fixture has fallen by the wayside, after Tottenham Hotspur’s matches against Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion were called off.

This latest decision follows an outbreak of Covid-19 among the Red Devils’ first-team players and staff, with a statement reading:

Manchester United can confirm that our Premier League fixture at Brentford FC, on Tuesday 14 December at 19:30, has been postponed and will be rescheduled in due course.Following PCR confirmation of positive LFT Covid-19 tests among the first-team staff and players, the outbreak requires ongoing surveillance. A decision was taken to close first-team operations at the Carrington Training Complex for 24 hours to help minimise risk of further infection, and individuals who tested positive are isolating in line with Premier League protocols.

Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the Club requested the match to be rearranged. The Premier League Board took the decision to postpone based on guidance from medical advisors.

Manchester United regrets the inconvenience caused to Brentford FC and to the fans of both clubs by Covid-19.

WHEN WILL BRENTFORD V MANCHESTER UNITED BE REARRANGED FOR?

With Brentford in EFL Cup quarter-final action next week, there aren’t any free midweeks to accommodate the postponed fixture this calendar year.

Gameweek 21 is the first chance of a Double Gameweek but only if the Bees lose their EFL Cup last-eight tie against Chelsea: two free midweeks would open up between Gameweeks 21 and 22 if that were to happen.

After that, Gameweeks 25 and 28 could accommodate the match as those are ‘off’ weeks for United in between their Champions League round-of-16 tie against Atletico Madrid.

COULd MANCHESTER UNITED v BRIGHTON IN GAMEWEEK 18 BE AFFECTED?

The Gameweek 18 clash between Ralf Rangnick’s troops and Brighton on Saturday lunchtime is the next cause for concern, following as it does only four days after the two clubs’ scheduled Gameweek 17 fixtures.

With Carrington shut for 24 hours at the very least, it wouldn’t take much of a delay in proceedings for United’s Gameweek 18 preparations to be disrupted to the point where another request to the Premier League for a fixture rearrangement might be submitted.

With both sides out of the EFL Cup, the match could theoretically be shifted back a few days (from Saturday 18 December to, say, Wednesday 22 December) to help ease with any training ground disruption.

Albion themselves reported “three or four” positive Covid cases ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers but as far as we know, that match will still go ahead.

OTHER GAMEWEEK 17 FIXTURES AT RISK?

We discussed other Gameweek 17 fixtures potentially at risk in our earlier article, along with a section on ‘Covid coping strategies’ in FPL.

POSITIVE COVID CASES RISE SHARPLY

This was the second big news announcement of the day, following on from the Premier League’s weekly bulletin on positive Covid-19 cases.

They confirmed that between December 6-12, there were 3,805 players and club staff tested for Covid-19. Of these, there were 42 new positive cases.

The previous high mark for weekly positive cases in 2021/22 was 16, so we really are entering into a period where disruption could wreak havoc in FPL.

Will we get any "reasonable" City lineup leaks? I wonder if Gundogan-Gallagher will be worth -4 with no bench at all?

Transferred Sanchez and Duffy for De Gea and Dalot last week, annoyed is an understatement lol, what do I do here? 1free transfer, 2.3m in the bank.

    De Gea*
    Trent, Rudiger, Reguilon*, Livramento
    Salah, Bernardo, Raphinha, Gallagher, Smith-Rowe
    Dennis

    Steele, Ronaldo*, Toney*, Dalot*

    A) Steele > Guaita
    B) Steele + Reguilon > Guaita + VVD (-4)
    C) Steele + Toney > Guaita + Ings (-4)
    D) Something else?

Thought I looked pretty solid for the week prior to postponements. Will have to scrape by with a few dodgy players, but should get 11 out at least.

    Guaita
    TAA / Alonso / James
    Salah (c) / Jota / B Silva / Bowen / Allan
    Dennis / Hwang

    Steele / Ronaldo* / Dalot* / Cancelo*

Would this be a week to triple cap Salah? Likely a low scoring week, if he does well, you could be looking at taking advantage.

    Ramsdale
    TAA-James-Tomiyasu (Cancelo/Livra)
    Salah-Gallagher-Bilva-Foden (Kovacic)
    Vardy-King-Maupay

    2Fts 0.2 itb

    What to do?

    A. Kova and Vardy > Jota and Watkins
    B. Kova and Vardy > Mount and Watkins

Both these look good for this GW but would then require a hit to get Ronaldo in next time. So there’s also a simple

    C. Kova > Henderson which more or less guarantees 11 and leaves me with 2 Fts next time.

    Thoughts appreciated.
    Cheers guys.

Okay... I've slept on it. Here is what I'm thinking regarding Ronaldo and MUN postponement.

    1. It depends on how good your bench is. It doesn't have to be a really good bench, it just needs to be one that can cover you. I have a bench of Livramento + Brownhill which I think will just about skate by. But if you have multiple Brentford, MUN, blanks etc then you should probably look at taking some hits.

    2. United will *probably* play in GW18 vs Brighton. The fact that it can be rescheduled midweek in GW18 is promising. I think unless things get bad at Brighton as well it has a good chance of being on.

    3. Ronaldo's fixtures are so good and he'll have a potential DGW in 21. If you get rid of Ronaldo now he ain't coming back in. The money burning a hole in your pocket will be used for beefing up the squad. BHA new BUR in the next 3 and then a DGW with Brentford is possible. You're looking at a lot of hits to rebalance the squad and then if you want back in, more hits.

    4. If in doubt, do nowt. I can't justify taking a bunch of hits for players I'm just not that convinced on. Watkins, Foden, Dennis/King are who everyone is getting and taking hits for players that I am not sure about long term is just not something I want to do. Additional postponements and stuff will make them annoying to replace again. If you're missing the likes of Jota, Silva, Bowen then yeah take a hit for them since they are long term parts of your team but if you're doing it for Watkins or a 2nd City mid, I'd really reconsider.

    5. Cancelo is making our teams look a lot worse than they actually are. The timing for Cancelo's suspension couldn't be worse. But I feel like he is making us feel like our teams are a lot worse than they are. Next week, when he comes back and lets say you blow up your team structure and do Ronaldo + Brownhill > Watkins + Foden. You could end up needing to bench Alonso, King, Bowen or something crazy like that. I'm not opposed to bench points, more opposed to having an imbalanced team structure that leaves a lot of money out of the XI.

    6. It depends if you back your own decisions on hits. Going the route of removing Ronaldo practically guarantees you have to take a bunch of hits to rebalance and take advantage. If you think you can pick winners and strong differentials even, then go for it. I don't think I can/I have all the guys I really want already. It's squad dependent and risk tolerance dependent. Just don't kid yourself saying you'll leave 5.7m ITB. You won't. You've gotta gamble on hits for short term gain if you go the Ronaldo out route imo.

Yes, pretty much my thoughts this morning. Barring any further bad news, I will bench Ronnie, start Gilmour and roll my FT.

You have chosen the way of hits haha.

I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm just saying I don't trust myself right now to pick the right options long term and doing hokey cokeys is against how I play FPL. I always give my players at least 3 weeks before shipping them out unless they get injured/suspended for multiple games.

        1. Karan14
          • 8 Years

Yes I agree but I have no other way getting a City mid. The only way for me to afford Bilva plus Ronaldo long term is if I downgrade Alonso and that doens't seem like a good option this week.

Have a look at my team I posted above I think you would agree with what I'm trying to do here.

Informative post - particularly agree with point 6, which is where I think many of us are. I did Vardy > Ronaldo on Sunday knowing full well of the risk to the fixture (so no excuses really, poor and rash decision making). The challenge is in picking the right 'short term gain' upfront - there are no clear and obvious candidates

What do you think of this camzy?

      A) D.Luiz + Ronaldo > Jota +Watkins (-4)
      B) Just Toney > Watkins with FT ( D. Luiz will play in that case)

I'd do B. You save the hit, you get rid of Toney who blanks and bring in Watkins who is nailed onto play (if they have a fixture) for nor BUR.

This is interesting but I'm not sure I understand why rebalancing the squad requires multiple hits? If, for example, I downgrade Ronaldo this week I could then upgrade Brownhill next week at no cost.... Where are all these hits coming from?

You leave lots of money ITB and you'll see moves like Brownhill > Foden which look like they'll pay off. You're really gonna not take a hit when you have 5.7m ITB and can buy Foden or Sterling for LEE? I don't think I could hold off. But maybe you're more disciplined than I am.

Well, I already have triple City (Cancelo, Dias and Silva) so I suppose that is one avenue of temptation that is closed off for me! But I haven't taken a hit yet this season and I'd be perfectly happy to carry the money over to next week. My issue is really another one that you mentioned, namely the underwhelming replacement options for Ronaldo. I'm really tempted to try and hold him, which would be absolutely fine if Broja was definitely fit. But with Broja in my starting 11 and Brownhill my only (possibly) playing sub I'm looking a bit weak.

in my case, on top of Ronaldo and Cancelo, I also have Townsend, Mbeumo, Reguilon, and Benteke, also Livramento..

My original plan was to do Townsend Mbeumo Benteke >> Gallagher Bowen + 4.5

Changed my mind. Loose RONALDO as the gains from CITY over two spreads is well worth it!!

      Hulkable post!
With no obvious Ronaldo replacements, I'm leaning towards holding and praying GW18 vs Brighton goes ahead

Think there is scope to get Ronaldo back when Salah goes to AFCON which could cover a possible DGW.
It all comes down to gambling on whether the Brighton game goes ahead and which games between 17-20 you might captain Ronaldo over Salah.

Not sure if mentioned already, but it is worth noting that Ronaldo has already had covid-19 so the likelihood he gets it again should be lower?

The issue isn't with Ronaldo, it's whether United matches go ahead.
I'll put Ron next to Cancelo and Livramento on my bench. That leaves me with no wigglr roon for a further injury or rotation (eg ESR, Foden or Jota all of whom gave me 1 point). If United's weekend game is also called off, I'm in all sorts of a mess.

This is the point Andy. Chances are it will be called off right? Spurs had about 10 days between the moment of calling it off and the next match. ManU won't have anywhere near that long. That is my biggest fear: benching Ron Just to find out his next match is also postponed...

He’s had it twice actually. Perhaps if anything he is more susceptible to it than others and is more likely to get it again…

I had similar thoughts but didn't yet solve my dilemma.

I have Livra and Gundo in my first 11 with no bench cover. If they play, great, if not I could do Ronaldo out for -4 but it looks wrong IF Brighton match goes ahead.

For now I will probably leave it as it is and if some good info that Gundo is on the bench then maybe Gundo-Gallagher is an option? What do you think guys?

I think number 2 on your list is key Camzy.

Is it wishful thinking to suggest that the Brighton game will *probably* be on? Even if there is a window in mid-week next week to reschedule it, is that still enough time to have passed if players have to isolate for 10 days? The thing is, currently, we simply DON'T have enough information to make an informed decision.

To put it another way ... if we knew for certain now that the Brighton game is going to be off as well, would you still hold Ronaldo?

It's murkier. But the fact the Spurs game vs Leicester is likely on after a much more serious outbreak points to them being back in time for GW18.

We don't know is the answer and if we don't know I'd rather think positively than negatively. Next week Cancelo is back so I have a stronger bench to deal with Ronaldo. He might sit again. Warmup for when Salah might go to AFCON.

For someone like you who has a just about enough bench of Livramento + Brownhill, why isn't a simple hokey cokey of Ronaldo with Kane or Lukaku and option? Get either one of them this week as a punt, no hits taken and possibly high upside. Then get Ronaldo back next week. Thoughts on this?

Don't want to hokey cokey. That's 2 key transfers you could be using to fix other more important issues.

Kane and Lukaku are also big punts with uncertainty of starts.

Brilliant post. Very reassuring. I was on the side of holding Ronaldo anyway but reading this has just made me think it is definitely the right thing to do.

It is also worth noting that more postponements could happen and it would be very easy to fall into the trap of making hit after hit to have a decent starting eleven.

      7. Just use your FT to remove Ronaldo and then reverse it if we find out Brighton game will go ahead. As you say, most have a playing bench, so we shouldn’t need to make many transfers over few weeks and Cancelo is back next week.

It just offers the chance to do Ronaldo to Watkins/Ings/Lukaku/Jesus/AnTonio as a 1 (or 2 if MUNBHA game called off) week punt.

        I don't consider that a good option.

I hate hokey cokeys because you're effectively using 2 transfers for one slot over two weeks. It almost never works. When I buy players especially for a hit I give them 3 weeks unless they get long term injured/suspended.

Given we don’t know if the weekend game will even go ahead or who has COVID within the team… is a potential Hokey Cokey really any worse than leaving a 12.4m player on the bench for 2 gameweeks?

I will replace Ronaldo with Kane (no hit). Historically he has scored goals against Leicester. Of course Kane has been out of form this year but I can always go back to Ronaldo next week.

Great post. I got rid for Watkins and has worked out OK so far but probably wouldn’t have done had I read this 1st and realised Ronaldo vs Brighton could still go ahead next mid-week. Even with the 12 points in the bank almost wish I hadn’t as I don’t see me going back before Watkins faces Burnley.
