Covid latest and how it affects FPL

The increase in Coronavirus cases has already seen 10 Premier League fixtures postponed, with six of those arriving in Gameweek 18.

It could have been more, too, with Chelsea seeing their request to call off Sunday’s game at Wolverhampton Wanderers rejected, which infuriated manager Thomas Tuchel, who said forcing what remained of his squad to travel to the match had put them at risk of catching Covid.

Now, all 20 top-flight managers are due to meet with the Premier League on Monday to discuss their concerns, so we may get an update soon as to what’s going to happen moving forward, but for now, here is what we know so far.

PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS SET TO MEET ON MONDAY

Premier League clubs will meet on Monday to discuss the growing crisis, with a number of issues to be tackled, including the schedule, late postponements and jab take-up.

There are also concerns over player release for next month’s African Cup of Nations, which has implications for the likes of Mohamed Salah (£13.1m), Emmanuel Dennis (£6.0m), Edouard Mendy (£6.2m) and Sadio Mane (£11.9m), all of whom are currently due to miss Premier League matches.

Managers and captains are also due to hold their own meetings, with several discussing the impact of Covid over the weekend.

“We play now on Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday. That is impossible. We do not have the players. We could maybe have another case or two. We have to think about it, we cannot just push it all through. First of all, take away the second semi-final of the Carabao Cup. Just play once, wherever you play it I don’t care. The 26th and 28th of December is really not possible. We would prefer to play but we need some help. If we carry on we cannot carry on as usual. If we don’t play anymore and have a break I am fine. But I know the problem. When do you want to play the games? It is not that easy to fit them in. We said before Coronavirus that it was a bit busy and now it gives us a proper punch.” – Jurgen Klopp

“The regulators will make the decision over whether a game is played or not but we all need to understand the reasons behind it. We are going to have to find a way. We knew when we started the season this (Covid problems) could be a possibility and I am sure there was a Plan A, B and C. We need clarity.” – Mikel Arteta

“I think it’s probably on a knife edge would be my verdict on it. I think when you start losing players to Covid, I think then the worry for me is that the competition becomes slightly unfair. I don’t think anyone wants to see that. The biggest thing people want to see is a fair league. They don’t want to see disparity in games and players missing. We all want the product to continue, I’m desperate to continue the programme myself but I do think that the welfare of the players and supporters has to come first.” – Eddie Howe

GAMEWEEK 20 POTENTIALLY OFF?

On Sunday evening, The Athletic reported that one of the options to be discussed is to trigger a Christmas circuit-breaker, which would involve an entire round of games – Gameweek 20 – being postponed.

The fixtures impacted in this scenario would be:

Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 20 schedule

That would have huge implications for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

For example, Chelsea would face successive matches against Liverpool (h), Manchester City (a) and Tottenham Hotspur (h) after facing Brighton and Hove Albion (h) in Gameweek 19, whereas the likes of Leicester City, Newcastle United, Watford and Everton would head straight into more appealing runs.

If that block of fixtures above is to be merged into a current Gameweek further down the line, it also increases the likelihood of a huge Double Gameweek involving all 20 teams, which would seem an ideal time to deploy the Bench Boost chip.

WHICH GAMEWEEK 19 FIXTURES COULD BE AT RISK?

As is stands, all Gameweek 19 fixtures are currently scheduled to go ahead, at least for now, but this handy graphic from the excellent @Legomane_FPL details those most at risk.

The purple blobs indicate a match which involves a squad with a current Covid outbreak, while the yellow ones are squads that are yet to reach the Premier League threshold for postonement.

This is a fast-moving situation, and with cases rising daily, there are likely to be more postponements in the days ahead. Because of that, holding onto those transfers till as close to deadline as possible is of course advisable.

We’ll be back with an update and reaction from today’s Premier League meeting as soon as information is released, but for now, you can read the club-by-club latest via our Covid watch page.

      Sensible move IMO.

If they have them in later rounds would get rid of those as well now.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been banned from driving for six months and fined more than £30,000 for driving while disqualified and without insurance.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/aaron-wanbissaka-manchester-united-lawyers-london-west-yorkshire-b1979437.html

The fine is inconsequential for somebody on his salary, and the 6 month driving ban probably is as well given that he was already driving while disqualified and without insurance. Should have been a custodial sentence, or at the very least community service. Famous people like him and Katie Price act like they are above the law.

      6 months ban seems light.

Would be in favour of a much longer driving ban and community service but custodial sentence too far IMO.

If they gave it one it would deter the rest that act like they are above the law. Hitting them in the wallet, or driving bans don't work.

Or just increase the fine to celebs/VIPs as a % of their value/earnings.

Same goes for the super car drivers who park on double yellow in big cities

This is already how the judicial system works out the fines handed out to motorists, traffic offences are one of the only sections of law that allow a judge to work out the fine amount based on the defendants salary.

Hence why it was £30k, you wouldn’t see that sort of fine fished out to Average Joe. Albeit, AWB is an average footballer at best!

My opinion is drivers should serve a prison sentence and within that sentence have some education lessons so they can fully understand why they are there and what the impact of their act is.

It's incredibly selfish and it puts innocent people's life at risk.

I know people who have done it, I have heard horror stories of those impacted by these selfish individuals.

The instigator of one of those horror stories was Luke McCormack who killed two kids whilst driving drunk and without insurance on the M6, seven years and four months of which he only served half was nowhere near enough IMO for his
irresponsible above the law like behaviour that killed two and crippled another. Those boys will never get their lives back but both my local clubs Plymouth Argyle and Truro City still signed him up after he got out of prison.

Can't remember which scandanavian country it is but I'm sure I read their fines are proportionate to wealth, I'd fully back that because otherwise anything that gets a fine is just a poor people law

          Did you read the article?

He's obviously still to blame but IF you believe the reason he used in court, he in theory didn't actually know he was banned as he didn't update his address with the DVLA when he moved and so the letters saying he was banned were sent to the old address.

Again, he's still guilty and deserves punishment but IN THEORY he didn't knowingly drive will banned. Which is why the judge did what he did.

He's brain dead. Lost all respect for him when this happened back in septermver.

The $#%@ can afford to pay someone 50k a year just to drive him around while he was disqualified, but hes bigger than the law apparently.

        Wilson (MUN)
        Watkins (CHE)

Any player earning five bookings from their side's first 19 Premier League matches will serve a one-match ban in the same competition. Yellow cards are not carried over to the EFL Cup or FA Cup.

Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) was shown a red card following a VAR review for a foul on Emerson Royal in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur. He will miss the visit of Leeds to Anfield in Gameweek 19 and the subsequent trips to Leicester City and Chelsea

I am all for the games continuing, but there needs to some compromise.
Play behind closed doors and create a strict bubble for players and staff.

They are, but your team would get more points without Kane and an actual bench.

Maybe, hopefully Manquillo back after illness and Brownhill should play, hopefully enough coverage.

Kane (C) vs Palace, reckon he’ll go on a run now

No but they’re only there to provide the odd 1-2 points when needed.

After a nightmare of benching Soucek’s hauls last season I only want low ceiling players on bench

Why though, it's Covid central and most of your defence can be benched at any time.

I've had 14 points off Tomiyasu last two weeks from the bench.

Yes, was happy to see flag on Manquillo and that illness was the reason he didn’t play vs Man City.
Should slot straight back after losing 0-4 too.

Hopefully Brownhill back in too and if I get Broja and have Gelhardt getting mins too that leaves just another sub keeper to get

Yeah, vaccine status isn't enough, you can still have it and transmit it.

Whatever you think about it, to have the govt/cities declaring emergencies and planning lock downs, to continue having 60k plus fans attending games, its just out of sync with what the govt and cities are saying. Makes no sense in my eyes.

Yes you can transmit it but hopefully the person you are transmitting to will also be vaccinated. If they are not vaccinated then TBH I don’t have a lot of sympathy if they get ill (unless they have a good reason for not getting the vaccine ofc).

Because people need to make a living

Same reason you can cram 200 people into an unventilated pub right now without masks and it’s totally fine by the rules, whilst you can do things like that I don’t see the extra benefit in stopping people going to football which is mostly outside

Most people before to long will be triple vaxed, if you can’t go to football after 3 jabs, when can you ?

I'm not saying do it for rest of season, but even for a few weeks while this thing seems to be rampant.

Other governments/countries being more pro active. In Ireland, all hospitality is closed from 8pm, and by all accounts in UK, it seems like they are just trying to get Christmas over before having a more restrictive lockdown, as people in power don't want to lose popularity ruining another Christmas.

With all this, and lockdown likely, be preemptive and restrict fans for a few weeks.

All these ''covid emergecies'' and restrictions seem to be decimating our hospitality industry and town centre businesses
at no personal cost to the perpetrators, but at least it's stopping the bodies piling up in the streets. How many dead so far?

All this chaos left me pretty confused and made confused decisions. I did Vardy -> Watkins as a free transfer. Then the Aston Villa Vs. Burnley game was canceled and I ran out of eleven players. I then traded Gilmour -> Raphinha because I thought you could play the 1-5-5-0 formation. Now Raphinha is on my bench with seven points. The transfer was absolutely counterproductive. This is no longer fun.

Premier League clubs have chosen to fulfil festive fixtures despite ongoing disruption caused by Covid-19 cases.

The league's 20 clubs met on Monday to discuss how they could deal with the challenges faced after six fixtures were postponed because of Covid-19 numbers over the weekend.

The postponement of a round of games over Christmas was a possibility.

No vote took place and so two rounds of fixtures are in place across five days from 26 December.

It had been expected that gameweek 20, starting on 28 December, would be postponed in order to ease the pressure on Premier League squads.

Instead, clubs have been advised if they have 13 fit players, plus a goalkeeper, they should fulfil their games.

There are however talks between clubs and authorities to scrap FA Cup replays in rounds three and four, and to reduce EFL Cup semi-final ties to one-leg matches.

Last week, Premier League players returned 42 positive Covid-19 tests in a seven-day period, the highest number since the start of the pandemic. Updated figures for the most recent seven-day period are expected later on Monday.

What great news - now to find a path through the chaos

May as well make the deadline the night before the 1st game and hope for the best if moving the deadline isn't a good idea. Of course, it doesn't help those around for the deadline but stops bringing in Villa players for example.

As is always the case there are players from multiple time zones - a fixed deadline is fair to all

When they keep moving it it gives the advantage to those who are free to monitor constantly - it’s as bad as the leaked team news advantage from last year

Moving the deadline to know which games are on is far more important that leaked lineups. Had the Arsenal game been called off, we would have locked in teams over 24 hours before a game played. Just hope the 1st game is on then there's no issue.
