FPL Double Gameweek 21 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Sunday’s Double Gameweek 21 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes over the winter period.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

INJURIES AND BANS

Fit-again Watkins can return to 2020/21 form in Villa's new-look 3-5-2 formation

Alisson (£6.0m), Joel Matip (£4.9m) and Roberto Firmino (£8.7m) were ruled out of Liverpool’s clash at Chelsea on Sunday after returning suspected positive tests for Covid-19.

As a result, the trio are now isolating.

A statement from the club prior to kick-off confirmed that all other members of the Reds’ playing squad have subsequently been tested and received negative results.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard declined to state the specific reason for Ollie Watkins’ (£7.8m) absence, but did confirm his squad are suffering with Covid and injury problems.

However, he did go on to say he is expecting him back against Manchester United, along with Tyrone Mings (£5.0m), who missed Double Gameweek 21 through suspension.

“I’m not sure I’m in the position to give you the details on it but we have got a mixture of Covid and injury problems at the moment. Ollie (Watkins) should be back for the next game.”

Brentford, meanwhile, had to contend with more injury issues, with Bryan Mbeumo (£5.3m) absent with a calf injury, and Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) and Sergi Canos (£5.5m) picking up knocks during the match.

“It’s a hip for Mathias (Jensen), and for Sergi (Canos) it’s a hamstring. I hope neither are major.” – Thomas Frank

On the suspension front, Aston Villa’s John McGinn (£5.8m), plus Leeds United duo Diego Llorente (£4.5m) and Tyler Roberts (£4.8m), will miss Gameweek 22 after receiving their fifth yellow cards of the campaign on Sunday.

GAMEWEEK 21 TAKEAWAYS

LUKAKU DROPPED AFTER INTERVIEW “BRINGS NOISE THAT WE DON’T NEED”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel dropped Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) from his matchday squad in Double Gameweek 21, after the Belgian said in an interview that he was “not happy” with his role at Stamford Bridge, adding that he would like to return to Inter Milan in the future.

Discussing his decision, Tuchel said:

“I decided to protect the preparation of the match and that’s why he’s out. Of course, we have spoken, twice. I have spoken to the main players, then we had to realise it is too close to the match. The thing got too big, the thing got too noisy, so close to the match. We delayed the decision and while we are doing that we have to protect the preparation of the match. We have a big match of football to play. We need full focus which is hard enough to get without this decision, but that is why he is not playing. For sure it was a difficult decision to take.”

Further comments then emerged after full-time:

“He is our player, there is always a way back, we will clear this behind closed doors and once we have made a decision and Romelu (Lukaku) knows, you will maybe know also. It is not to be discussed now.”

SALAH AND MANE SET TO DEPART FOR AFCON

In a breathless Stamford Bridge encounter, Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) and Sadio Mane (£11.8m) were both on the scoresheet ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) departures. Both players are now set to fly out and join up with their respective teams for the tournament, with Naby Keita (£5.0m) also poised to turn out for Guinea, and are expected to return for Gameweek 24.

The absence of Salah in particular is a real blow for FPL managers. However, it does open up a free Liverpool slot alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.3m) and Diogo Jota (£8.2m), who are owned by 96.92% and 85.45% respectively in the top 10k.

That heightens the appeal of a short-term move for Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), who has now completed his three-match suspension. Notably, the Scottish international had produced a goal and four assists in his six appearances prior to his ban, averaging over seven points per match during that time.

Liverpool now face domestic cup ties against Arsenal (x2) and Shrewsbury Town, before they are back in Premier League action against Brentford at Anfield, with a second match possibly to be added as part of a Double Gameweek.

CALVERT-LEWIN FRUSTRATES

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) frustrated his new owners on Sunday after failing to convert his first-half penalty at Goodison Park. The England international, subject to 135,378 transfers in ahead of Double Gameweek 21, certainly had his chances, ending the match with four shots in the box and six penalty area touches.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s xG shot map v Brighton and Hove Albion in Double Gameweek 21

However, all hope isn’t lost, as he should at least be handed another opportunity to impress next week, when Everton take on Leicester City in the second-part of their double-header.

“That was not the idea… it was maybe too demanding for him but we were losing and had to do it. Obviously, we didn’t want to keep him on the pitch as we felt, physically, he wouldn’t have the match fitness. Maybe he has the strength but not the stamina. But at least he’s fine and, hopefully, he can recover quickly for the next one.” – Rafa Benitez on his decision to use Calvert-Lewin from start to finish

BURNLEY FORM A WORRY

After today’s 3-1 loss at Elland Road, Burnley remain in the bottom three and have not won since October. It’s also worth noting that their away form is particularly bad, having failed to win a single game in 10 Premier League attempts this term, conceding 19 goals in the process.

It won’t get any easier for them, too, as their next four league games are against Leicester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

They will also be without goalscorer Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) for a period, who is now set to link up with Ivory Coast for AFCON.

UNDERWHELMING START TO DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 21

After West Ham United lost their clean sheet late on at Selhurst Park on Saturday, it was another underwhelming day for FPL managers who had invested heavily in Double Gameweek 21.

Brentford and Everton both lost their clean sheets early on, and whilst they did score four goals between them, the likes of Ivan Toney (£6.6m), Demarai Gray (£5.5m) and of course Calvert-Lewin, failed to get in on the act.

Instead, it was budget options Mads Roerslev (£4.3m) and Anthony Gordon (£4.5m) who were the unlikely Double Gameweek heroes, at least for now, as they both delivered double-digit hauls.

I get it he didn’t save it, but it’s not that simple is it. The role of a keeper is to do anything he can to make the player miss, if he out psyched him & made him miss he should get the points, sports psychology 101. Thanks all those who simply answered my question, to the others trying to make me feel foolish for asking, try and be better.

You're overthinking it. The rules of FPL around this are straightforward and have been the same for years. The shot was taken by DCL, Sanchez didn't make any contact with the ball prior to it going wide. End of.

Genuinely, was this what you implied with your original question? Do you really think there should be points involved for psyching out the opposition?

Or did you just not see the penalty and assumed it was saved? This feels a little bit like you are post-rationalising the question because of Al of the sarcastic questions. It's OK to be angry at all of these sarcy responses even if the question had an obvious answer.

Fair point, I’m surprised I wasn’t aware of the rule but I’ve never read them, which is why I asked. I still think keepers should get points for a miss, Maddison putting Salah off proves that a miss can be influenced

Obviously you need to go back and watch Maddison speak to Salah just before his run up. Do some research, it's all over the net. Fair play to him. Once you have established that Maddison has done even more to put the player off than the goalie ask your fpl question again and see if it holds water. What's good for the goose us good for the gander.

it’s a fair question and perhaps the keeper should get penalty save points if the penalty is missed.

If the penalty taker scuffs the penalty and it rolls to the keeper, that would not even register as a shot normally or even a save … so would this be a penalty save ?

Perhaps the easiest way to allocate points is whether the penalty is scored or not, maybe ? rather than actually saved.

      1. MYNAMEISBigtopmark.sman
        • 6 Years

A scuffed shot that would go in the net if the goalie was not there is surely a save as the very definition of a save is to prevent a goal. It matters not the velocity or quality of the shot, only whether a goal has been prevented.

during the game isn’t that considered as a ‘collection’ rather than a save ? I don’t believe that every time the keeper picks up the ball that is directed at the goal that it is considered as a save ?

There are thousands of ways the ball could be collected that would not be considered a save. Let's keep it in context. Any shot that would be a goal no matter how poor must be a save if the keeper has prevented a goal.

I am pretty sure that such a scenario doesn’t get classed as a save or gets a save allocated. Loads of times I see the keeper collecting the ball and I expect a save to be allocated but it never is because it’s not really a save and just a routine collection, no diving or difficulty that makes it a save that warrants a point.

Sometime my keeper is on two saves and flops on a really weak shot but we never get that as a save and we don’t get the bonus.

Is it not possible that you want it to be a save and so you view it that way? If so then a biased person may conclude that any time the keeper touches the ball they should get save points even if the ball would never have ended up in the goal. If it is uncertain that a goal has been prevented I don't think that should be classified as a save, but if a goal has been prevented this should count as a save. Not sure it works that way but it should

not at all, there are times when the keeper collects a rubbish shot bouncing towards goal and doesn’t get a FPL save allocated for it, even though had the keeper not been there the ball would have gone in the net. Sometimes the keeper even goes to ground to collect the ball (rather than risk the ball bobbling through his legs) but doesn’t get the save allocated.

Watch the next game on TV and you will see what I am getting at and you will understand that your definition above of a save certainly doesn’t always result in a FPL save being allocated that collates in to a bap for 3 saves.

It is and I'm considering the same, although somehow cannot convince myself to captain a defender. It's the high time to change it I guess.

What you can do is trying to think that TAA, James, Cancelo etc. are basically mids who just happen to get extra points for clean sheets (and goals).

Salah and ESR > KDB and Saka for a -4?

I have exactly the right money and concerned that Saka’s price will go up and Salah’s price will drop and I won’t be able to do the transfers. Also worried I’ll jump the gun and miss out on DGW players. The season is so difficult.

No plan- waiting to see what doubles go into 22 and may BB, FH depending how it looks. Would not want to use WC this soon particularly with postponements still likely. Week 27 a long time away in current environment- lol!

Used my WC this GW, as team was totally wrecked. Will strongly consider BB next GW if DGWs fall nicely, although the Covid can easily scupper that so maybe better to wait until later in season

      1. Esalman
        • 14 Years

Using BB right after WC seems like a sensible plan. I need to sort out Salah situation next week, so perhaps I will WC, get a strong bench and then BB the following week.

Plan was to BB22 the minute the chance of a DGW materialised. Getting less and less enthusiastic about it the closer it gets, but its still a fortnight away. WC soon after with a view to later DGWs, and probably FH in a big BGW. Don't know what to do with the 2nd FH, but there's still plenty of twists and turns in this season yet.
Was very close to TC this week, but saw sense in the end

    7. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

No plan, just trying to stay fluid and adaptable. Happy with my team as is overall so don't see myself using WC for a while, and BB feels very risky in the current climate. Depending on how the DGW fixtures are and how they relate to my team FH is definitely a possibility but we'll see. Holding for later could be advantageous but it's also important to recognise when you have a good chance to use a chip on a week where it can be a springboard for you, saving for later constantly could mean you miss out even if it's being sensible and covering yourself in case of a difficult week.

Gordon stole the headlines but if you remove the ratings pump that goals give, Gray was the best player on the pitch. Brighton defence had no answer for him, could have easily had a goal and three assists, if not for some good saves from Sanchez and the general dreadfulness of his team. Shared set piece duties with Gordon.

I'm kind of on the fence about selling Salah - well, I bought him at 12.5 and then after today's likely drop to 12.8 and further drops, I'd guess I'd need to rebuy potentially at 12.7 and would then also have to watch that he doesn't drop and get run up to even 13.0 for his return...

Also, the "best" replacements seem to be Everton (Gray) and maybe Watford (nobody) and Son (poor fixtures) and maybe Arsenal (Saka). What about Liverpool who has a good run of fixtures and certainly playing to win = Fabinho or Henderson seem poor choices but someone has to step up in the midfield?

    A. hold Salah
    B. Fabinho/Henderson
    C. Gray
    D. Other

Or maybe Salah -> Gray, and Edouard -> Ronaldo for -4 = could work but might cost -4 getting Salah back in later depending how I need to use my FT's in the meantime.

I still think you have to wait. Crellin is doing his best guess work but it's exactly that. Guess Work. Any transfers before we get news on dgw are nothing more than stabs in the dark imho. I get the value argument but honestly........building team value is a first 10 or so gw of the season sorta thing by now and with these circumstances its best just to take the drop and wait.
