FPL Daily: Lukaku latest, more Covid cases at Liverpool, Everton sign Patterson

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily, a series that will serve non-Premier League matchdays and days when we don’t bring you a team news/press conference round-up.

LUKAKU RETURNS TO CHELSEA SQUAD FOR EFL CUP SEMI-FINAL

FPL Daily: Lukaku latest, more Covid cases at Liverpool, Everton sign Patterson

In Tuesday’s EFL Cup semi-final press conference, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) has apologised and will return to the Chelsea squad for tomorrow’s first-leg clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgian had previously been dropped against Liverpool after comments he made in an interview, claiming he was “not happy” with his role at Stamford Bridge.

“We are happy we took the time that it needed to look on it and to talk calmly about it. This is what we did. Romelu (Lukaku) apologised and is back in the squad for today’s training which is later. For me, the most important thing was to clearly understand and believe that it was not intentional. He did not do this intentionally to create this kind of noise in front of a big game.

Secondly, it was the very first time. Before, when he seemed in his opinion to be ready to play from the start after his injury, and we thought he needed to readapt to the intensity a little bit more, there was never the slightest behaviour against the team.

So, it was the very first time that we actually felt in this way. And these are very important points to stay calm, understanding that it’s not as big as maybe people want it to be. It’s also not small, but it’s small enough to stay calm, to accept an apology and to move forward.” – Thomas Tuchel

CHELSEA INJURY LATEST

Amongst all the Lukaku chat, Tuchel also found time to hand us a quick squad update.

Notably, Trevoh Chalobah (£4.7m) is out of tomorrow’s tie after the defender picked up a knock against Liverpool, whilst Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) remains a doubt.

However, Timo Werner (£8.6m) is back in training and Tuchel is hoping to hand him some minutes.

“Andreas (Christensen) is a doubt for tomorrow.

Trevoh (Chalobah) is definitely out for tomorrow because he has had a reinjury from before.

Timo Werner trained yesterday, we have one more session to go and he feels much better which is a really good sign. He took part in full training, at full intensity and had no reaction at all. If today’s training goes well for him then we will look to have him on the bench and maybe give him some minutes.” – Thomas Tuchel

TOTTENHAM INJURY LATEST

Kane and Son start as Llorente returns to Leeds’ starting XI

Chelsea’s EFL Cup opponents, Spurs, offered an update themselves on Monday, with Antonio Conte discussing Ryan Sessegnon (£4.3m) and Steven Bergwijn’s (£5.9m) injuries:

“Ryan Sessegnon’s situation is better than Steven Bergwijn’s. I think he’s almost ready to be available in the next game, in the FA Cup he’ll be available.

For Steven, I think we have to pay a bit more attention because his problem was in the calf, where you have to pay more attention and wait a bit before we have him available again” – Antonio Conte

COVID OUTBREAK CAUSING FURTHER PROBLEMS AT LIVERPOOL

Gameweek 11 team news: Jota start hopes boosted by Firmino hamstring injury

According to reports, Liverpool’s EFL Cup semi-final against Arsenal on Thursday is in doubt due to further positive Covid-19 tests in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Alisson (£6.0m), Joel Matip (£4.9m) and Roberto Firmino (£8.7m), plus Klopp of course, all missed Double Gameweek 21 after testing positive.

Now, reports have surfaced suggesting there has been further cases, which could put their cup tie at risk.

Worryingly, the Reds’ squad is already stretched, with Mohamed Salah (£12.8m), Sadio Mane (£11.8m) and Naby Keita (£5.0m) departing to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

EVERTON SIGN PATTERSON

Earlier today, Everton confirmed the signing of Rangers full-back Nathan Patterson for a fee believed to be worth around £16m.

The 20-year-old has been used sparingly at Ibrox this season, with James Tavernier first-choice right-back, but has been capped at international level, suggesting he can compete with 33-year-old Seamus Coleman (£4.9m) for a starting role.

Asked what Evertonians can expect from him, Patterson said:

“Athleticism, desire and strong challenges, along with good forward play. I am an attacking full-back. I love getting forward and creating chances to benefit the team. I can’t wait for it.”

Rafa Benitez has already signed Ukraine international left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko during this window, which you can read more about here.

Just shows you need to play week by week. Loaded Everton doubles instead of Bowen in anticipation of 22. Now 22 no Liverpool or arsenal double … more fool me

GW dates are organised by PL (not FPL) before the season begins. Things like broadcast rights are sold based on them (eg Amazon had rights to GWs 14 and 20 in December.

Just seen Lukaku's apology to the Chelsea fans.

If he did love his experience at Inter Milan so much, isn't one logical extension for him to join Spurs and reunite with Conte?

He’s been dropped for a game and forced to apologise. Surely that’s punishment enough? Making him play for Spurs seems very harsh.

a sincere and effective apology is one that communicates genuine empathy, remorse, and regret as well as a promise to learn from your mistakes. In other words, you need to really believe you did something wrong and feel sorry for the hurt you caused.

          Sincerity is a requirement.

As a Villa fan, given we were forced to field the kids against Liverpool in the FA cup (in no small part down to Liverpool being worried about fixture congestion) I hope it goes ahead. They have a great youth system and it’s not as though they don’t normally field the kids in this competition.

I guess they will have to play before AFCON players return.

Who guarantees that the covid outbreak hasn't affected the youth players? With 12+(new covid cases) senior players missing surely the youth players are training with the first team.

You got to play against Liverpool's kids the season before so can't understand why you are moaning.

Lighten up on the salt my friend (maybe use it to season the chip on your shoulder).

To be serious thought I’m not having a moan and I do quite likeLiverpool. Just think there needs to be consistency. The EFL cup game a couple of years back was a different scenario and down to conscious decisions that Liverpool made to send the squad they did to the club World Cup. In any event all example that does is reinforce the point that the game can go ahead.

The youth teams train in separate bubbles to minimise the risk of cross contamination so while I agree with you in principle that the youth teams may also be impacted there is no suggestion (that I have seen) the youth teams own fixture on Friday is under threat at this stage.

I dont hate Liverpool, I just find the contradiction hilarious. Couple of weeks ago when teams started to get struck with COVID, Klopp was like no need to postpone matches just play through it. Now the guys own team has COVID and he is complaining about fixtures and wants postponements. Can't have it both ways?

This is what he actually said:

"It is pretty unlikely that once you have it, that it stays with three players - maybe [it spreads to] another three or four, then you have 13 players available to play on the 26th and 28th and that is impossible," he told BBC Match of the Day.

What is hilarious is how you have twisted his words to suit yourself

Perhaps you can refer to the title of the article as opposed to picking out a section that suits your narrative?

Clearly wasn't concerned about stopping games so why now? A team like Liverpool would surely have reserves and under 18s to field?

Depends on how many first teamers are now out.
The PL recently changed the rules for 13 outfielders and 1 fit keeper to be available. If that’s in doubt then I think it’s fair to postpone.
Even though it’s “just the carabao cup”, the broadcast is still a big deal and nobody would want the integrity of a semi final to jeopardized by fielding the weakest side possible.
As a pool fan, during these covid times if Arsenal were in this position and asked for it to be postponed I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Some people are just too fixated on hating on Liverpool. Standard tall poppy syndrome imo

It sucks for all teams impacted. Look at the likes of Leeds recently who were decimated. If they were in this position and it was a semi final nobody would bat an eye lid.
Newcastle recently lost their best players Wilson and ASM and got their game postponed.
Given the current rules or 13+1, I think it’s a fair request to postpone.

The Arsenal situation in opening round was a bit random following pre season etc and also there were no set rules in terms of minimum number of players needed

Mate, I'm done arguing with you. You've an agenda against Liverpool. But as I've said before, you're not unlike the thousands of others that you'll see crying on EVERY single Liverpool related thread on twitter.

So you had two players missing? Liverpool have at least 11 + new covid cases.

3 first trackers and 3 going to Afcon.

Throw some back room staff in and say you don’t have enough players is their plan.

    Still not sure about FH22

I assume you would still want TAA against Brentford and Jota not a bad pick either (could also swap him for DGW player)

depends how may SGW players there are
      often its quality over quantity!
However, could create more opportunity for the lesser owned players

I am considering same move. Those who have all chips left may consider using it on next big dgw, but it might be good week to TC Salah also. There are different chip strategies for that time, but something like WC, FH, BB, FH is not possible for me.

Also depends on how fixtures fall for players in team you get back in 23 after any FH. Still a wait and see for me but leaning towards not playing

I wonder why it’s always the forwards acting up. Entitlement? Feeling like they’re the most decisive players because their job is to score goals?

Gallas threw a strop as well lol wouldn't say it's only strikers although it is probably more common with them.

Don't know what's with Auba but everytime I see the guy he is always smiling after missing a chance. That's been the case since joining the club, a bit like "if I score then good but if not, oh well"

I would personally sell him this transfer window and bring in a solid centre forward that has physical strength but always like to run behind defenders. That would add so much to our team. Not a fan of this false 9 role that Laca is playing, I would rather have 3 firing forwards than 2.5.

It's a bye to the next round for the other club if the game isn't played before the next round.

So that gives up to Feb 26th i think.

There is much more time to get the games on.

You can’t possibly know that. I mean the manager had COVID over the weekend so it stands to reason many of the player have.

What’s your theory, that they are going to try and postpone all their games ‘til Salah & Mané are back?

Good evening! Which combination do you prefer going forward, until Salah gets back?
    A) Ronaldo/Maddison/Marcal (or up to 4,3 def)
    B) Dennis/DeBruyne/Laporte for -4
    C) Other triple idea fwd+mid+def at max 23,7m

When we thought Liverpool were likely to double I had pencilled in DCL, Robertson and Raphinha which should fit your budget.

Yup, it fits, thx, and not a bad idea. Only have Cancelo from City and would like to double up somehow after next game. Robbo would be great. Small question marks over DCLs fitness and form and Raphinas future, though?

If you get Robbo, you have to ditch either him or Jota when Salah is back. Laporte could be an option, but in this situation I prefer having some decent rotating defenders who are also much needed bench cover.

I looked at my team and have started to wonder if BB should still be in consideration. In normal sgw Trent and Jota would be C material. The one to sell and buy back would be Cancelo, but even he may haul vs Che now.
    Sanchez: dgw
    Cancelo: Che
    Trent: Bre
    Jota: Bre

And it doesn't matter who is on the wheel. Sacking Mourinho helped more than sacking OGS. Well, at least OGS lasted longer than anyone expected and can now say behind closed doors that getting Ronaldo got him sacked.
