Southampton’s home form, Broja’s goals and Brentford’s defence: FPL Double Gameweek 21 notes

Southampton swept aside Brentford in the only Double Gameweek 22 match of the day, after Everton v Leicester City was postponed on Sunday.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

FORTRESS ST MARY’S

Following tonight’s convincing 4-1 win over Brentford, Southampton have now lost just one of their 10 Premier League home fixtures in 2021/22.

Across the season, only Liverpool have lost fewer on home turf, with their only defeat arriving against Wolverhampton Wanderers back in September.

SOUTHAMPTON AT HOME 2021/22:
GameweekOpponentScore
21Brentford4-1
20Tottenham Hotspur1-1
15Brighton and Hove Albion1-1
14Leicester City2-2
11Aston Villa1-0
9Burnley2-2
8Leeds United1-0
6Wolverhampton Wanderers0-1
4West Ham United0-0
2Manchester United1-1

From Gameweek 26, the Saints embark on a kind run of home fixtures, taking on Everton, Norwich City and Watford, which suggests their budget options could offer FPL managers plenty of value during that run.

BARGAIN BROJA

At the start of the season, Armando Broja (£5.3m) wasn’t one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first-choice strikers.

However, the Chelsea loanee is developing into a player who will surely start most weeks, after producing his fifth goal of the season in Double Gameweek 21.

As a result, Broja has now racked up seven attacking returns across 16 Premier League appearances, though it’s worth noting only eight have been starts, with all of his goals arriving in those fixtures.

BROJA’S PREMIER LEAGUE STARTS 2021/22:
GameweekOpponentScoreGoalsAssistsBonusFPL points
21Brentford4-11028
19West Ham United2-30104
17Crystal Palace2-211312
16Arsenal0-30002
15Brighton and Hove Albion1-11028
13Liverpool0-40002
9Burnley2-21028
8Leeds United1-01028

Given the schedule detailed above, plus the fact they have a home tie against Newcastle United that still needs to be rearranged, Broja surely won’t remain a differential too much longer.

“This is not a surprise, he is quick and has a fantastic finish. He has some weapons that are definitely helping us. Young players can take a while to adapt to the Premier League and we knew it would be a tough start, but we are not getting worse we are getting better every day.” -Ralph Hasenhuttl on Armando Broja’s form

DEFENSIVE ISSUES AT BRENFORD

While a relegation battle looks unlikely, Brentford’s defensive form on the road is a real concern, having shipped 16 goals across their last six away games.

Given the opposition faced, which hasn’t exactly included the divisions most potent attacks (Southampton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Burnley), owners of Diogo Jota (£8.3m) and other Liverpool assets will be relishing this weekend’s matchup.

Notably, most of their chances during that six-game run have been conceded from their right, a theme which continued against Southampton, which is captured on their expected goals conceded (xG) shot map:

Brentford’s xGC shot map v Southampton in Double Gameweek 21

“Fair play to Southampton but my job is to look at my team’s performance. If we are not playing every second of every Premier League match 100% then we are not getting anything out of it. We needed to do better at 2-1. We can’t give three of the goals away, especially the last two. We tried to change it offensively (when Wissa came on). We were slightly better but it didn’t help. That is why it hits so hard. The big thing we want to be good at is defending well and we have done it well this season but didn’t today.” – Thomas Frank

Southampton XI: Forster, Bednarek, Lyanco, Salisu, Tella (S Armstrong 70), Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Diallo, Perraud, Redmond (Adams 65), Broja (A Armstrong 78)

Brentford XI: Fernandez, Ajer, Jansson, Pinnock (Jensen 68), Roerslev, Janelt, Norgaard, Baptiste (Wissa 56), Canos (Stevens 76), Mbeumo, Toney

It sounds good but Antonio against Leeds be a backfire.
KDB could be a good move he seems to be gaining some momentum.

Yes. Really want to get KDB. But the only way I can do it is by either downgrading Antonio or Rudiger.

Contemplating the exact same move, but for a hit. Highly depending on whether I think having King is enough Watford, and my thoughts about losing Antonio.

Also considering some alternatives like Ronaldo and Lookman, or Kane and Trossard. But KDB and Dennis edges it

I keep seeing people moaning about FPL this season given. Am I the only one who thinks this season has been a complete mix up and adds an element of surprise/excitement ? Having little predictability around the fixtures separates the men from the boys in some regards, having to follow updates/news around postponements etc, back up plans with a decent bench etc. Obviously it’s unfortunate when you have players that have games that are rescheduled (Leicester this week for example) but that’s the nature of covid FPL and have to work around it. Similar to injuries that make it interesting, son is out, now everyone is forced to pick an alternative punt (maddison, moura etc) or hold/wait for Salah which makes it interesting. Might just be me but this is the most interesting season yet, granted whoever wins it likely has an element of luck! Just my opinion, each to their own 🙂

I don’t mind it tbh, I think if you’re really invested in your rank and planning it could get more annoying but if you can zoom out a bit and stay a bit relaxed then it’s actually more fun

The luck should roughly even out over the season for everyone

I think some people can't cope with the relative underperformance of so many big stars, Who would have predicted at the start of the season that Fernandez KDB Sterling Lukaku Mane Rashford Aubameyang Calvert Lewin Robertson Kane Maguire etc would all have such trifling ownership? I think it is inevitable with the punishing fixture schedules and with more and more internationals being played, that players consistency levels have burnt out. COVID has exacerbated that, rather than causing a frequency of abnormal postponements in itself.

yes FH it is. Already have 5 DGW without the FH but thinking of going all out and hence a strong bench too giving the fact that games can get cancelled or worse a chosen player doesn't play a single game at all.

you could be absolutely bang on with the Bobby's call. i just want to triple up Pool just yet because of the limited knowledge of how they will line up without Mane and Salah.

McAllister and Greenwood/Rashford could be a good punt for sure but I would like to keep Bowen for Norwich and Moura minus Son is very tempting.

    Is this worth a -4?

    Son & Toney > Lennon & Kane

Means my team for this week would be:

    De gea
    Dalot / royal / cancelo / TAA
De Bruyne / jota / Bowen / Lennon
    Ronaldo / Kane

    Bachmann / broja / Ramsey / Williams

Could work but why Lennon? Is he going to be on PK? I'd prefer Gray is he's sub 6m, or Trossard if you can afford 6.1 and really want a DGWer. heck even Martinelli at 5.4 could be a better pick.

Literally only because I have 4.9m available and he’s in the the best form of them. Having a double is a bonus but in all honesty I expect nothing from him

Then don't force yourself to get Kane. Dennis King Antonio could even do better. Get a strong mid instead

Question for all non - free hitters; how many DGW players will you have in your team this week after transfers?

      4 here/ possibly 5 with a hit.

      (C)Dennis, (VC)Maddison, Royal

Might switch Antonio to (VC)Ronaldo if Coutinho is 7.0 or below (long story)

        Coutinho is 7.0!

The door's open for Ronaldo in my squad, then 🙂

Started with 5, now down to 3 (Son and Wood).

Will probably have 4 if I get Maddison (for free) or Dennis (for a hit).

You got Wood so far ahead of the curve that you went full circle

          Lol.

Been waiting for ages for his DGW, first flagged now going to Newcastle.

Now after completing a full circle, I have no other option than to flatten the curve with a brace on his debut 😉

That's the hope. Good luck 🙂

Should get more service here than at Burnley this season anyway

              Yeah here's hoping. Thanks man.

If Newcastle don't get a result in the next 3, surely they'll be doomed. Wood should be fired up to prove the doubters wrong, mind you. 🙂

      6 with a hit. Plus 2 x WHam, 2 x Liv and either Cancelo/Foden/Gray for last spot

    Thoughts please.

For a hit, Son and Antonio to:
    A. KDB and Dennis
    B. Ronaldo and Lookman
    C. Kane and Trossard
    D. Just Son to Maddison/Moura/Raph

This is a little tricky for me. I want Watkins in GW 23 if gets a double.
But this article has convinced me that holding Broja is also smart.

    Other forwards;
King - Norwich in GW 23
Antonio - good long term fixtures (have Bowen).

Keep Broja or sell for Watkins' double?

    Thanks.

Sell for me, I'll be doing the same. Next few fixtures are against tighter defences, I'll bring him back for GW25 v MU

Im still selling. Maybe get him back later but for once there's actually quite a few forwards I want and next 4 fixtures (rather glossed over in article) are poor: wol MCI tot mun

I think there was a good chance even with him they'd go down. I'd like to see Vydra get a little more gametime now. They need to pick form up very soon though
