Southampton’s home form, Broja’s goals and Brentford’s defence: FPL Double Gameweek 21 notes

Southampton swept aside Brentford in the only Double Gameweek 22 match of the day, after Everton v Leicester City was postponed on Sunday.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

FORTRESS ST MARY’S

Following tonight’s convincing 4-1 win over Brentford, Southampton have now lost just one of their 10 Premier League home fixtures in 2021/22.

Across the season, only Liverpool have lost fewer on home turf, with their only defeat arriving against Wolverhampton Wanderers back in September.

SOUTHAMPTON AT HOME 2021/22:
GameweekOpponentScore
21Brentford4-1
20Tottenham Hotspur1-1
15Brighton and Hove Albion1-1
14Leicester City2-2
11Aston Villa1-0
9Burnley2-2
8Leeds United1-0
6Wolverhampton Wanderers0-1
4West Ham United0-0
2Manchester United1-1

From Gameweek 26, the Saints embark on a kind run of home fixtures, taking on Everton, Norwich City and Watford, which suggests their budget options could offer FPL managers plenty of value during that run.

BARGAIN BROJA

At the start of the season, Armando Broja (£5.3m) wasn’t one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first-choice strikers.

However, the Chelsea loanee is developing into a player who will surely start most weeks, after producing his fifth goal of the season in Double Gameweek 21.

As a result, Broja has now racked up seven attacking returns across 16 Premier League appearances, though it’s worth noting only eight have been starts, with all of his goals arriving in those fixtures.

BROJA’S PREMIER LEAGUE STARTS 2021/22:
GameweekOpponentScoreGoalsAssistsBonusFPL points
21Brentford4-11028
19West Ham United2-30104
17Crystal Palace2-211312

15Brighton and Hove Albion1-11028
13Liverpool0-40002
9Burnley2-21028
8Leeds United1-01028

Given the schedule detailed above, plus the fact they have a home tie against Newcastle United that still needs to be rearranged, Broja surely won’t remain a differential too much longer.

“This is not a surprise, he is quick and has a fantastic finish. He has some weapons that are definitely helping us. Young players can take a while to adapt to the Premier League and we knew it would be a tough start, but we are not getting worse we are getting better every day.” -Ralph Hasenhuttl on Armando Broja’s form

DEFENSIVE ISSUES AT BRENFORD

While a relegation battle looks unlikely, Brentford’s defensive form on the road is a real concern, having shipped 16 goals across their last six away games.

Given the opposition faced, which hasn’t exactly included the divisions most potent attacks (Southampton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Burnley), owners of Diogo Jota (£8.3m) and other Liverpool assets will be relishing this weekend’s matchup.

Notably, most of their chances during that six-game run have been conceded from their right, a theme which continued against Southampton, which is captured on their expected goals conceded (xG) shot map:

Brentford’s xGC shot map v Southampton in Double Gameweek 21

“Fair play to Southampton but my job is to look at my team’s performance. If we are not playing every second of every Premier League match 100% then we are not getting anything out of it. We needed to do better at 2-1. We can’t give three of the goals away, especially the last two. We tried to change it offensively (when Wissa came on). We were slightly better but it didn’t help. That is why it hits so hard. The big thing we want to be good at is defending well and we have done it well this season but didn’t today.” – Thomas Frank

Southampton XI: Forster, Bednarek, Lyanco, Salisu, Tella (S Armstrong 70), Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Diallo, Perraud, Redmond (Adams 65), Broja (A Armstrong 78)

Brentford XI: Fernandez, Ajer, Jansson, Pinnock (Jensen 68), Roerslev, Janelt, Norgaard, Baptiste (Wissa 56), Canos (Stevens 76), Mbeumo, Toney

If nothing else changes before deadline, who would you play out of these?

    A) Cash (MU home)
    B) Tierney (Spurs away)
    C) Allan (Norwich home)

    Hi all,
    Is TAA 100% out?
    Maddison or Lucas for Son?
Should I play Watkins or transfer in Dennis/king?

TAA was due to return to training early this week, he tested positive shortly after the Chelsea game. He should be fine, they still don't play for another 4 days

Got 2m in the bank and 1FT, how's this look for a transfer to then play my BB? Who's my best captain option here, Dennis?

    Son > Maddison/Tielemans

    Lloris
    Taa - Cancelo - Coufal
    Son - KDB - Bilva - Jota - Bowen
    Antonio - Dennis

    Bachmann - Lamptey - Rudiger - Broja

Also, what's wrong with Broja? I know TAA is flagged because of Covid, do we think he makes the team? Also not sure what's going on with Dennis flag

Dennis was snapped in training yesterday, so he should be good to go.
The only thing 'wrong' with Broja is his minutes, as the article indicates. When he's on the pitch, his minutes-to-goals ratio is good. The issue is the rotation of forwards when available. It was interesting to notice Ralph using Tella as wingback in Livramento's absence - that takes one striker out of contention.

Any ideas what I should do here. 2 FT 0ITB

    Sanchez
    Laporte Cancelo TAA * Dier*
    Son* Salah* Bowen Jota
    Dennis* Antonio

    Ramsdale Coufal Ramsey Broja*

That Son injury thrown a spanner in the works now. Anyone know how bad Broja injury was? Was thinking to use some of cash from midfield to upgrade him to Kane

Given the circumstances, I consider it wrong to attach bench points with the label "luck". Over the last few GWs, I have intentionally formed my team in such a way that I am prepared for unforeseen cancellations. As a result, not only is more money invested for the bank players, but also more emphasis is placed on their fixtures and the general team sustainability. With these measures, however, I consequently weaken the upside potential of my first 11 team for each GW. Contrary to the opinion of many managers, I think that these circumstances place even greater demands on the sensitivity of the managers, which is why it feels more and more wrong to me when "random" point boosters from the bench are labelled as "lucky"...

I don’t think anyone with half a brain would be calling bench points ‘luck’ in the current circumstances

Probably doesn’t help when every time someone gets a point off the bench they are straight on here saying ‘X in for Y lovely jammy pointe’

Completely agree. I've had a strong 15 all season, and usually made the right calls with who to bench. Even when you get it wrong, the benefit of having a strong squad has been clear this year.

From GW9 to GW12 I had 17, 29, 20 and 15 points on my bench, but at the same time climbed from 152k to 14k.

Crazy run over the mentioned period Ameisin, congrats! And at that time of the season it was even less necessary to focus on a strong bench, but it general still more evident then before COVID situation affected managers plannings.

However I can imagine that the bench focus will become less evident again towards the end of the season, when the situation and the corresponding GW planning become more stable again.

It also relates to the general balance of the team. One or more double or triple ups can have dangerous effects on team performance, which was less the case in normal circumstances.

Thanks! Yes you're right, at that part of the season it was more my strategy than simply a necessity, but it's how I've chosen to play the last couple of seasons and has generally worked well.

And yep, I think it will be less important as we get to the end of the season, assuming this Omicron wave dies down - I certainly won't be using any of my chips until then as it's near impossible to plan for that at the moment!

Might just ignore stressing in DGW players this GW and go quality over quantity. What do you think of Son & R.James --> KDB & Cash (-4).

Leaving me with 3 DGWers. Not overly keen on other DGW assets than Watford strikers but really dont want them long term.

It’s not just the late postponements and nature of the rescheduling of the postponed fixtures that is causing havoc for fantasy football managers planning, it’s also the number of players missing regularly due to Covid and injury. You can have the best intentions for planning what to do with your FT and then those plans are continually wiped out week after week trying to repair your team. The second FH was pretty pointless, they should just give everyone 2 transfers per week instead of one.

Even with regard to player-specific planning, there are ways to protect yourself against the occurrence of possible scenarios. Players who have already been positive have a lower chance of being tested positive again in the corresponding period, etc. The complexity increases, of course, but the information level remains the same for 99.9% of all managers.
I find the current situation exciting in that the new complexity demands even more sensitivity and the usual template discussions are less important and thus the diversity of the various strategies is increased.

Ronald, Kane and Lukaku must be amongst the worst values this year. All three poor. But based just on fixtures, Ronaldo. Kane without Son might be ineffective. Lukaku plays City and Brighton away.

All lottery though with these three.

You are aware he's probably off to Newcastle, aren't you? He won't double anymore.
Wood, that is, not Ronaldo 🙂

If I make my planned move of Son > Maddison, this is definitely worth a BB right? Would have 6DGW players, and a good set of fixtures for non DGW'ers.

    Lloris
    Taa - Cancelo - Coufal
    Maddison - KDB - Bilva - Jota - Bowen
    Antonio - Dennis

    Bachmann - Lamptey - Rudiger - Broja

Depends if Broja plays now, Its also against Wolves and Rudiger plays City one game.

However, just think about when you're next Wildcarding and if you'll have better fixtures then or afterwards. If not then it's decent enough.

Not sure myself. I'm just that skeptical that even with his form before he wasn't getting starts, niggle makes it worse. However, article above is good and better than my comments.

Personally I wouldn't BB. A lot more fixtures to be rearranged too. up to yourself though m'man. Hope it goes well.

To be honest I don't think I would. Broja (wol) looks like a blank to me, and I'm skeptical whether there'll be a single CS in all 4 Che/BHA games. Also a bit risky Covid-wise still too

Yeah I hear what you're saying, not sure I see a better opportunity to use the BB chip.. plus I hate it every year so might aswell use it when I can get a load of additional players playing without taking a hit. Understand your point though for sure.

After having wasted freehit (3 Everton) I could really do with an Antonio Hattie, Fab clean sheet and maybe 1 assist for Bowen

James to Robertson for free? Gives me 3 pool but means in a couple of moves I can offload one either Jota/ Robertson with Son to bring Salah back.

At this stage of the game, i dont care whose price rises and falls, despite having a rank around 30k i dont care who does well or not. I just want to watch football without blooody cancellation

I kinda agree... All the cancellations and postponements are challenging my "care" for this season. Makes me pretty indifferent tbh.

I feel like we came so close to a shutdown/break a few weeks ago that I'm grateful we still have any games on, and starting to let a little optimism creep in that we'll see fewer & fewer cancellations soon

Hope you are right about that last part. I'm a MU fan as well, so that as well makes it difficult this season haha.

Agreed. FPL, like Poker, is a game with a large element of luck anyway (50/50?).
But Covid postponements and players often missing on short notice is making this game more akin to playing the National Lottery.

Still having fun plodding along mind you

Which of these options would you go with to possibly bring in Lamptey/Davies keeping fixtures after this GW in mind.
    1. Sell Coufal. -4. (Seems to be fine after COVID).
    2. Sell Dalot. -4. (a double so should play once at least)
    3. Don't do the -4.

    DDG.
    TAA, Cancelo, Dalot, Coufal.
    Son**, Bowen, Jota.
    King, Ronaldo, Anto.
    Bach. Martinelli, Foden, Tierney.
    1ft (Son replacement), 0.4m ITB.

Pick a captain assuming all are fit.

    A) Kane
    B) Maddison
    C) Jota
    D) Trent

You pretty much have it in order of preference for captaincy tbf.

    Son, Antonio -> Maddison, Ronaldo

Depends. Who can you play if you simply benched Son?
Antonio has a good fixture and United attack a bit off the boil not to mention Ronaldo's slight hip issue which could see him play only 1 game of double.

Son to Maddison seems good for this DGW. Keep an eye on Leicester situation, though.
