In-form Robertson an appealing FPL differential for Gameweek 23 and beyond

Gameweek 23 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Liverpool, Aston Villa and Burnley, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing.

ANDREW ROBERTSON

Who is the best third Liverpool asset to own during AFCON?
  • FPL ownership: 3.2%
  • Price: £7.0m
  • GW23-27 fixtures: cry | LEI | bur | NOR | –

Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) has blanked just once across his last seven Premier League appearances, yet is still owned by just 3.2% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

During that time, the Scot has produced one goal, five assists and 10 bonus points, plus four clean sheets, averaging 7.9 points per match.

His ability to create has caught the eye, too.

Since Gameweek 13, Robertson ranks amongst the top three defenders per 90 minutes for chances created, big chances created and crosses, whilst his 2.26 expected assists (xA) tally is only bettered by team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m). There isn’t a great deal of goal threat on offer, with just four shots in the box registered, though it is worth noting that his 34 penalty box touches are at least eight more than any other backline option.

Liverpool’s forthcoming schedule offers further encouragement that he can continue producing, with this weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace followed by appealing ties against Leicester City (h), Burnley (a) and Norwich City (h). Robertson’s share of set-pieces could be key here, too, with the Eagles, plus Brendan Rodgers’ side, both vulnerable defending dead-ball situations at times this season.

Robertson’s recent form suggests he can be an effective differential for that run, and perhaps even stake a claim to be the third-best Liverpool option behind Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and Alexander-Arnold going forwards.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO

  • FPL ownership: 5.5%
  • Price: £7.0m
  • GW23-27 fixtures: eve | LEE | new | WAT | bha

Despite Philippe Coutinho’s (£7.0m) ownership already surpassing our usual 5% differential threshold, we’re making an exception this week, due to the Brazilian’s impact off the bench against Manchester United in Double Gameweek 22.

The playmaker’s goalscoring cameo swung the tie in Aston Villa’s favour, ahead of an appealing run of fixtures which gives Steven Gerrard’s side a real opportunity to build some momentum. There is also potential for a Double Gameweek to be added into the mix, with postponed ties against Leeds United (a) and Burnley (h) still to be rearranged.

As for Coutinho, it’s difficult to gauge his fitness levels from a 22-minute run-out, and because of that, it is by no means certain that he starts against Everton on Saturday. However, it surely won’t be long before the Brazilian is locked into Gerrard’s 4-3-2-1 ‘Christmas tree’ formation, which is arguably the perfect set-up to get the most out of him. That’s because the system involves two number 10s rather than traditional wingers, which means Coutinho will have the freedom to drift infield and affect the game in more central areas.

Normally we preach a ‘wait and see’ policy with new signings to see how they bed in, but with Villa’s next run of fixtures of such an attractive nature, Coutinho could be an excellent differential.

JAY RODRIGUEZ

Who are the best budget FPL enablers for Gameweek 2 and beyond? 1
  • FPL ownership: 0.5%
  • Price: £5.2m
  • GW23-27 fixtures: ars | MUN | LIV | bha | cry

Following Chris Wood’s (£6.7m) surprise departure to Newcastle United last week, plus Maxwel Cornet’s (5.9m) ongoing involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Burnley are woefully short of striking options.

As a result, budget forward Jay Rodriguez (£5.2m) will likely be tasked with spearheading the Clarets’ attack, which Sean Dyche touched on earlier this week:

“It’s not the perfect scenario, but it is what it is. I do believe in people having the chance, and Wood has been one of the mainstays, but now he’s gone, it opens up the next window.

We do want people to take on that challenge, and down the years I’ve believed in the players to do that, and I still believe in the players we’ve got here to take the challenge on.

Jay (Rodriguez) is a great servant to what it is, a fantastic pro, and we do believe in Jay. He’s been very unlucky this season with injuries and the timing of them, because he’d have played more football.” – Sean Dyche

Worryingly, Rodriguez’s last Premier League goal was 11 months ago, though it is worth noting that he has netted five in cup competitions this season, whilst his combined tally of 14 across the previous two campaigns does at least offer a bit of encouragement that he can deliver.

Notably, the Clarets’ schedule detailed above does underwhelm, with tough games against Arsenal (a), Manchester United (h), Liverpool (h) and Brighton and Hove Albion (a) up next. However, they also need to fit in five postponed matches – a trip to Aston Villa along with home games against Leicester City, Watford, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur – which means plenty of future Double Gameweeks.

Rodriguez has showed glimpses of his quality throughout his time at Burnley, and with so many out, could be the man who steps up.

Am I the only person hoping the double doesnt happen? I would then have the decision of playing Ramsey over Bowen, Jota etc..

What's happened before? The Premier league may add a match after the first match that week but for a game like FPL which locks the game based on deadlines to then drop in additional matches while having locked the game doesn't make sense.

Yeah, his answer is plain wrong. It wouldn't be bringing deadline forward 12 hours, it would be more than 3 days and that has never been done before.

Either solution is possible, neither are certain.

PL is using FPL to sell TV rights for better price. Therefore it is in the interest of PL to avoid announcing dgw:s after deadline. Aliens may come to earth to visit tomorrow if they exist and want to. PL has no reason to forget FPL when announcing dgw:s. However, everything is possible, but dgw to be announced after deadline is highly unlikely. Aliens coming even much more unlikely, thouough.

Hard to make sense of that. 😕

FPL is a marketing tool, sure, but one of many. The decision about when a game is to be played will be made with zero reference to FPL.

All that remains is what FPL decide to do with it. Either they include it in GW23 - the natural course. Or they move the GW24 deadline forward by nearly 4 days, something they have never done before. Your guess is as good as mine but I doubt alien time-travelers will have much to do with it. 🙄

    2. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years

Yes. As there is a 2-week gap, the added game could well be announced after GW23 deadline. FPL would then have to decide whether it sits in GW23 (would be natural) or they bring the GW24 deadline forward by around 3.5 days, meaning the extra game would be in GW24.

My understanding is the the Premier League sets game-weeks - not FPL.

And that the PL would not change a game-week once it's started.

      Is that not the case?

(I would believe that we don't know because its' never happened before)

The Premier League sets Matchweeks, but FPL sets Gameweeks, and most of the time these correspond exactly with each other.

Last season however the PL decided to introduce a staggered winter break by splitting Matchweek 18 into two halves, with 5 matches in Matchweek 18a played in the midweek before Matchweek 19 and another 5 in Matchweek 18b in the midweek after. This gave all teams a staggered break without leaving a gap in the TV schedules.

FPL then decided to put the matches from Matchweek 18a into a BGW18 of only 5 matches, and to combine the matches from Matchweek 19 and Matchweek 18b into a DGW19 of 15 matches.

Sometimes the FPL deadline is brought forward by a day because of a Friday match, but this has always been announced before the start of the Gameweek, when the TV schedules are announced.

It would probably be unprecedented to bring forward the deadline for the next Gameweek after the current Gameweek has started, but there's probably no hard and fast rule to say that this can never happen. And it would probably be even more unprecedented to add an extra match into the current Gameweek after the deadline, but who knows - we live in strange times!

Being on WC this week makes things slightly different - can't commit to Son without a clear understanding of his injury.
I'm not sold on Coutinho yet - i expect him to not get the mins. But it's easy to move to him at his price.

So far have KDB, Jota, Bruno, Bowen, Raphinha

Enough money to Jota > Salah in 2-3 weeks.
Bruno could become Foden, giving me a Foden > Salah route too if I want double Liverpool attack. (hence the 3 week time frame)

In the back of my mind I'm concerned that we're looking at Ramsey like we looked at Dennis GW1 - if he's that cheap, he has to be bench fodder. He might well prove to be 2m underpriced yet the way Gerrard has him playing.

its not about Kane, its about Kanes price point. At some point one of Kane, Lukaku or Ronaldo will be firing and its an easy switch. Kane looks the best option at the moment

I wish I was tempted by Kane but he almost always returns too little for his tag

yea true, im just trying to morph your team into my wc team 😀

          DDG
          TAA - Cancelo - Laporte - Robbo
          Bowen - Raph - Jota - KDB
          Kane - Dennis

          Foster, Ramsey, Ait Nouri, Idah

0.8 itb so I could do KDB to Salah, but KDBs fixtures are nice. I have a few ideas re Salah

Not sure of ASM but obviously great, that is some serious defence there, would never want to play with any less than 4 defenders, which obviously brings some risk, but great anyway

2 free transfers and 1.2M itb

    Ramsdale
    TAA | Cancelo | Tierney
    KDB (c) | Jota | Foden | Bowen | Mount
    Watkins | Antonio
    ------------------------------------------
    DDG | Alonso | Coufal | Scarlett

Mount + Alonso >>> Raphinha + Alt Nouri (for free) is my current thinking. Any other options that you'd suggest?

I wish Elanga was a forward...didn't think that was a sentence I'd write this year.
Would be a great little gamble at the end of the bench for MU's fixtures - midfield slots are too valuable though I think.

Yup … that price point would be marvellous as a forward.

Is there a better bargain bucket bench?

    Foster, Idah, Ramsey, Ait Nouri

Davies and Broja are other candidates

I'd be planning on playing Ait-Nouri.
Broja is proven more than Idah - and Southhampton are better than Norwich.

But yep these options are pretty good. Ramsey is a great one (though again I'd want to play him sometimes!)

even Ramsey is possibly worth playing in addition to Ait. Might have to do that if I want Son at some point.
Given Covid, they will make appareances regardless

Hm, which one here for captain?

    A) Trent
    B) Jota
    C) Cancelo
    D) Dennis
    E) Foden

    Currently on Cancelo or Trent

Not Foden just due to risk of not starting

Restlessness, tedium, weariness … anyone else feeling this when they look at their team?

Anyone else considering WC going into GW24 … lots of time to tinker, perhaps catch a few price rises and factor in the return of Salah?

      me!
      so i wildcarded this week.

and i'm loving it. i feel like i get to re-start my season and ignore everything that's gone wrong.
wc time is truly fun - and i always like going 1-2 weeks ahead of other people, i tend to get a couple of things right and wrong and so it doesn't make much difference.

I’m tinkering already and my potential new team gives me a little lift … moving back to 352 as it stands … think it will depend on how the GW goes but I think I’ll pull the trigger after this GW ends ..

I free hit last week and coming back to my team this week, it was like the morning after moment. I have wildcarded, I thought about it, I know what I want, I dont see the point in wasting 5 weeks to reach it.

    Gray + Kane >> KDB(c) + Broja -4?

Broja would be benched this week.
This would leave 1.1m itb to upgrade either Fernandes or KDB to Salah.

    On a WC for GW23

One week only choose 2 of these 3.

    A. KDB
    B. Bruno
    C. Jota

(Of the rep chosen for GW23, one will become Salah in GW25)

    Last decisions on WC ...

    5.0 defender.

    a/ Digne / Cash
    b/ Tierney
    c/ Just do a 4.5 (Davies/White)

Rest of defense is TAA, Cancelo, Ait-Nouri, Lowton
Aim is to play 3/4 at the back, Lowton firmly 5th bench except for doubles.

Is there anything to be said for Cucurella?
If I were looking at B I'd also be considering Tomiyasu I think. A bit more robust, shall we say.

I do like Cucurella, almost listed him as an option but didn't want to make it too long.
I think I'm ok stumping the extra for Tierney over Tomi - but it's a good point.

    Thoughts on these moves?

James + Brownhill to Ait Nouri + Raphinha (-4)

    DDG
    TAA | Cancelo | Dias
    Bruno | Jota | Bernardo | Bowen | Raphinha
    Watkins | DCL

    Bachmann | Antonio | Ait-Nouri | Livra* +0.3m

this is taking a -4 for benching Antonio for Raphinha Maybe if Raph has a double
