The Scout Squad’s best FPL players for Gameweek 23

The best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards for Gameweek 23 are debated by the Scout Squad panel.

For those new to this feature, it’s a weekly piece that always takes the form of a ‘Free Hit’-type selection for the upcoming Gameweek.

Fantasy Football Scout contributors Az, Sam, Neale and Tom each propose an 18-man long-list of Fantasy players, explaining their notable inclusions and omissions in the article below.

The Scout Squad also serves as a precursor to the Scout Picks, as the players listed will then be narrowed down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83.0m) for final our weekly selection ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Each writer must meet the following requirements:

  • At least one goalkeeper costing £5.0m or less
  • At least one sub-£5.0m defender
  • At least one midfielder listed at £6.5m or below
  • At least one forward priced at £7.0m or lower
  • No more than three players from the same club

Which move would you prioritise out of the following 2? 1FT

    A) Gray to Raphinha
    B) James to Digne
    C) Both for -4

Would probably start him ahead of Gray in a 4-4-2. What you reckon?

        Foster
        Cancelo TAA Laporte
        Bruno KDB Jota Bowen Gray
        Watkins King

Yeah would also start ahead of Gray if you did B

It's actually pretty tricky, Raph a better buy but James a better sell. Don't think you need to do both either. I guess do A as it prioritises points now.

        Who for then?

Already have Trent/Cancelo/Laporte. I prefer AV's fixtures to Spurs. Regi/Royal would probably be my next picks. Or i could downgrade to a fodder and use the cash somewhere else?

I think Ait-Nouri has one of the highest ceilings in the game vs Brentford. It's the games after where he becomes more benchable

"Last 4 matches" are for the last 4 appearances of the player/team highlighted. Since it's a player, you'll be shown the last 4 games where he was on the pitch as a starter or subbed on. That's also why DCL's stats are like that: DCL's last 4 matches include Leeds and Brighton in GWs 2 and 3

Not Bruno because I expect Ronaldo to start. However he did just play midweek and I imagine he still feels the hip injury at least somewhat. He could play 90, he could play 70, he could play 30 but I’m just not 100% sure. I may still cap him but it could be Trent or Cancelo also.

is KDB worth the 4.1 over Foden? and do you prefer Raphinha or Coutinho?

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

In my opinion, in the current metagame, absolutely not. Especially if you ignore the noise around Foden's data (injury, Covid, clubbing incident), and realise he's a permastarter in Pep's front 3 when available, preferably CF, and his points per *start* as an 8.0m OOP mid. If KDB had more penalties or was more of a box presence than Foden, maybe. But nope. Maybe both, if affordable. But Foden's price is something

Nope. Coutinho is in a better team (which is improving a lot atm) and has better fixtures until GW28 (plus guaranteed for BGW30 atm). Maybe both, but Coutinho first for me

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years

I agree here with Foden, especially if you have decent enough bench options.

On second point, I actually prefer Raph while Bamford is out just because he’s on form, on Set pieces and pens and I’m not 100% sure yet about Coutinho fitness and nailedness. If it’s a double I’d go Coutinho obviously. It’s a bit more risky but it could have huge upside to jump on before he inevitably explodes.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 2 months ago

I think Raphinha being absolutely nailed for GW23 might be overshadowing the fact that you're unlikely to make the switch for GW24. If I may suggest: wait if you're unsure he starts GW23, then get Coutinho from GWs 24 to 30. Or get Raphinha for GW23, then add Coutinho from GW24

I will not knock on Raphinha as an asset. I believe he's good too, but those Villa fixtures with Coutinho in free roam...

For sure. He’s a good option. Looks like he’ll be first choice #9 and on pens with all this new creativity around him and good fixtures.

Not clinical. Hasn't been, since forever. But clinical strikers aren't very common in FPL atm, so he can win via elimination there

There are also two possibilities in the 4-3-2-1 formation: Watkins plays like Firmino (linkup) or like classic Antonio (spearhead). I'm not sure which it'll be, as the formation hasn't fully happened yet. Looked more like Firmino during the Coutinho cameo, but that was short, and my memory might be incorrect

But if you need a striker, you can't go wrong with those fixtures. This makes my answer to your question yes, definitely a good alternative

Gerrard is setting Villa up to play much like Klopp's Liverpool. Ings is taking the Firmino role. Watkins looks a decent option for me (mind you, I've owned him for a while).

Oh. Do you think Buendia drops out? I see 4-3-2-1 suggested everywhere, but you're suggesting 4-3-3 with Coutinho and Watkins as the inside forwards, right?

                    • 11 Years
                    2 years, 2 months ago

Yeah. But it's tricky with Buendia and McGinn to fit in too. I think Ramsey keeps his place. There will be rotation and I'm not sure Coutinho can do 90 mins constantly yet, and won't play all of a DGW until he's fully match fit.

I think it will be Ings off the bench, with Coutinho and Buendia in support behind Watkins. Just imo. If they stay in the 4-3-2-1.

In terms of answering the OP, Raph's time is fully secure whereas Coutinho might get short minutes in the near future. So I'd edge towards Raph, allowing a triple Villa with Ollie, Rambo and Digger.

I’d say it’s worth it if you don’t have a decent enough attacker on the bench - Gray/Martinelli/Broja etc. If you didn’t then I’d go KDB.

Yeah Duffy/Dawson out. Wolves/City in. I’d keep in mind you need money for Salah later on. Guessing you’d swap Raz for him?

Btw play Gray over Moura IMO.

Duffy (not starting anytime soon, regardless of fitness) to Ait-Nouri and bench Dawson

Dawson to Digne any time from GW24

Or both moves for -4 and bench Moura, so your GW24 moves can focus on Salah. Keep Livra at 3rd sub: he's nailed when everyone's fit (Dawson isn't), and his good fixtures start soon

You probably meant "A unanimous decision" there 🙂

Fwiw, I agree too. Dude did not look good vs Leicester, even though he's OOP. Probably because it's simply not his position. Madders and Jota also happen to be undroppable in FPL for GW23, although they can go from GW24 (fixtures for Maddison, Salah + Firmino + Mane threatening Jota)

depends on how far Egypt goes in AFCON

      1. BIGREDDOG

        I could be wrong but:

AFCON final and 3rd place playoff are Feb 7. Liverpool have Leicester on 11th Feb. I’d guess if Salah gets to the semis then he’ll miss Leicester and be back for the following match vs Burnley. If they go out in the groups he is back for Leicester. If he loses the QF on Jan 30/31 he should be back for Leicester.

Cheers, he is still in my team but I am thinking WC now followed by BB- it might be worth the risk transferring him out and getting him back in 2 weeks' time after Leicester.

No worries. Yeah I think I’d keep if you have him now and hold both chips til later in the season when perhaps COVID calms down and you can plan with more security.

Partey was eliminated from AFCON on the 18th, yet played for Arsenal on the 20th

AFCON ends on the 6th. Liverpool's GW24 match is on the 10th. I have very little doubt that Salah and Mane start. Heck, every AFCON player should be available if their GW24 match is on the 10th: Salah, Mane, Keita, Iheanacho, Ndidi, Marcal

Ah well there you go. My dates mixed up as I’m in Bali atm haha.

The only difference is that Partey got knocked out early. So basically 3 fixtures, I think.

He started from the bench vs Arsenal last night which I think will happen to the rest depending on how far they go in the tournament but we will see

It's 3 games per week, just like the calendar for most EPL clubs in Europe this season. But yeah, coming from that to meet the rest of the squad on a winter break puts them closer to the bench than a start

Klopp refuses to rest Salah and Mane often. Maybe it'll happen for GW24, I guess, but only one of 'em

This is all assuming they make it past the quarter-finals though

just saw this now. only thing I would add is that the next game is 3 days later so Klopp might give preference to form players vs Leicester and not rush all of them back. In saying that, I expect Ivory Coast to beat Egypt ha

He’s always been on my radar got him back last week. Some tough fixtures and options like Bowen and Jota have kept him out. The fixtures are turning green so it’s the time.

Plus I think most of us assumed that considering the amount of player Leeds have had out that this would affect his output

To be fair, it did. He was living on penalties and last gasp points for a while. Raph could have scored a whole lot more if there were better players around him, as he created chance after chance...

Here's hoping things ease up even more from now on. And yeah, those fixtures until GW32. Set and forget, maybe

Bamford will be back very soon and Leeds will rise (still w/o Phillips though). I'd say Raph should very much be on people's radar.

I am so far off a ManU supporter but I would really like Ralph to pile into the Sun newspaper. They say he is too weak for the job. I would love him at a press conference to tell them to stop taking news and embellishing things to a point of ridiculousness. Just kick them out of the press conferences..

Got this problem wrong several weeks in a row when I had Ramsdale instead of De Gea. Hard to go Watford keeper over United, but then West Ham seem five times likelier to score than Norwich. Going back and forth.

Hoping we hear Watford get a double (Burnley) before decision time, would settle the issue I suppose. Crellin's spreadsheet currently shows it as a go so he must believe.
