There have been few, if any, more frustrating Fantasy assets over the past or two than Fernando Torres. The 24-goal haul in his debut campaign with Liverpool may have been five seasons ago but many still cling to the old adage that class is permanent, despite his recent woes. Others insist El Nino is way past his best, that his pace is gone and, bitten once too often by disappointment, swear blind the Spaniard will never darken their Fantasy squad again:

Expectations were raised last term when Chelsea were afforded a kind opening schedule. Torres had notched just once in 14 games after joining from Liverpool in the January 2011 transfer window but, with new boss Andre Villas-Boas at the helm, the Spaniard was instilled as the lone forward in the 4-3-3 ahead of Didier Drogba for the start of the 2011/12 campaign. With Juan Mata purchased from Valencia to provide the creative spark, Torres was expected to thrive off the service of his fellow-Spaniard but the script didn’t quite go to plan.

Goalless in the first three Gameweeks – including home clashes with West Brom and Norwich – Torres was dropped to the bench against Sunderland the following week. Back in the starting XI for a trip to Old Trafford, his woeful open goal miss overshadowed a smartly-taken finish and underlined a player shorn of all confidence. Torres notched again the following week at home to Swansea but a wild two-footed challenge saw him pick up a three-match ban and signalled a downturn in game time and attacking output.

Didier Drogba’s African Cup of Nations duties afforded him a run of starts in January but Torres continued to frustrate and failed to find the net in the Ivorian’s absence. Indeed, he notched in just four league matches last season, returning a total of six goals and seven assists for a total of 92 points. His starting price of 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) had dropped to 9.9 by the end of the campaign and, with a mere 4% ownership, Torres scored less than half the points hauls of fellow Fantasy heavyweights such as Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero.

The Prospects

Back from Euro 2012 with the Golden Boot in hand, Torres will return to the Bridge with a spring in his step. The sceptre of Drogba no longer hangs over him and, with assurances from Roman Abramovich that he will be the club’s first-choice forward next term, a boost in confidence is maybe, just maybe, all that’s required to turn him into a bona fide goalscoring machine once again.

His cameo performance against Italy in the Euro 2012 final highlighted Torres’ capabilities if his team mates play to his strengths. A change in playing style is likely next term at Chelsea – Abramovich wants his team to entertain and dazzle their way to victory rather than grind out results and the Russian has already shown he is willing to splash the cash. The Blues have added Eden Hazard and Marko Marin to their ranks so far this summer – along with Mata, they form a trio of outstanding creators that will give Torres chances aplenty to feast upon as Roberto Di Matteo looks to add further silverware to the Champions League and FA Cup picked up at the tail end of last season.

A drop in price is on the cards across the Fantasy games, with an FPL valuation of 9.5 – 10.5 looking feasible and, with the likes of Van Persie, Rooney and Aguero all set to rise in cost, some will be contemplating Torres once again in light of Chelsea’s summer signings.

Certainly, the opening fixture list has been kind. A double Gameweek 1 sees Di Matteo’s side travel to Wigan before playing host to Reading and is sure to see huge investment come the Blues’ way. With home games against Newcastle, Stoke and Norwich, in addition to a trip to QPR all on the agenda by Gameweek 7, there is no question that Torres has one of the kindest starting schedules of any forward for the season ahead. Whether he fails or flourishes is really anyone’s guess; given his previous, snapping up Torres’ services will always be looked upon as a leap of faith – taking a punt depends on how much you still believe.

I think with Drogba away and the golden boot at the Euro's he will be pricey. I think Cech/Ivanovic and Mata/Hazard might be enough for me.

I think he needs to hit the ground running, with early goals this season or I could see him slide back into his 0 confidence of the last year or so.

I suppose it will depend if FPL pricing will be based on the very end of last season and the odd Euro game or last season as a whole.
I imagine an awful lot, maybe 40% will start with him given the DGW and if he fails then the only way for his price to go would be down.

Good point, due to a large ownership before GW1 his price will drop dramatically if he fails.

So we can pick him up again later on at a bargain price 🙂

      Totally agreed...

No sure, for sure, but I sense his confidence might be back. A UCL winners medal, a FA Cup winners medal and a Euro winners medal in a season he has mostly been utterly tragic. If he can't take confidence from that little lot then there is no hope.....

Villas Boas is going to get fired by the end of the season. Can see spurs being vulnerable at the back against almost any PL team, and Ade is just too inconsistent. Much like chelsea when under his reign, they will be leaky at the back and struggle to score, finishing around 8th.

No chance. Vertonghen, Oscar and Adebayor all signing this week. If Modric leaves then theres a lot of money to replace him.

Adebayor only became "inconsistent" once he (and most of our team) were exhausted due to no squad rotation all season. With a more intelligent manager and possibly Raymond Verheijen as fitness coach that won't be a problem this season.

Chelsea were weak at the back because their players are not suited to playing a high line as they're not quick enough - Kaboul and Walker are two of the fastest defenders in the Premiership.

You have no idea how much misery I went through in my GW36 WC after leaving Torres (C) out for Ade (C). I think he owes me big-time.

the problem is that at 9.5, he is the cheapest guaranteed starter among the top 6
with not much competition (for now) he seems nailed on
i dnt think ill be able to resist him especially with that dgw

I just said why. Factor in that he will now lead the line and not play 2nd string to Drogba plus he put his horrible form behind him towards the end of the season and had a good Euro tournament.

We don't know the formation, or nailed on starters of Chelsea's recent midfield acquisitions.

We do know Sturridge is ill. Which leaves one recognised first team striker - Torres. There are too many variables in the Chelsea midfield. Mata aside perhaps.

Just went on the Fantasy site to read that the biggest disappointment of the season was Luis Suarez and that the highlight of the season was Arsenal 5-3 Chelsea. Lol, are the writers United fans? It's fair to say Suarez was a disappointment but surely the likes of Nando, Nzog, Nani were also big disappointments?! Highlight of the season was City 6-1 United, no doubts or arguments about that. Didn't expect such bias articles if i'm honest.

The writers are from this site.
They are writing from a strictly FPL point of view, ie RVP hat-trick vs Chelsea was the highlight of the FPL season.
Everybody knew Fernando sucked already, and Nzgobia didnt come with anywhere near as much expectation to succeed.
As for Nani he was up there with the top midfielders by the end anyway.

Think about expectations, they were massive for Suarez pre-season and not so high for the others you've mentioned. Chelsea Arsenal was far more competitive and therefore better viewing than the one sided City Utd game. Only a biased Liverpool fan would think otherwise 😉

Hi all, the wait for the (once again slow) fpl continues....

    few quickies -
    1) vdv worth a punt?
    2) any of the new teams play a lone striker?
    3) welbeck or hernandez to start, or neither?
    4) top 3 defences for this season?
