634x258 Pre-Season

In seasons gone by it almost seemed irrelevant as to where Darren Bent plied his trade, such was his consistency in finding the net. Given enough game time, the goals flew in with incredible regularity – Bent had notched double figures in eight of the nine campaigns prior to 2011/12 but the arrival of Alex McLeish to Villa Park put paid to his prospects as a Fantasy force last time out:

Bent has grabbed 41 goals in his previous couple of campaigns with Sunderland and Villa and, having looked set for another strong season, was slapped with a 10.0 price tag by Fantasy Premier League (FPL). In front of his own fans, Bent’s form caught the eye to begin with last term – his first six home games harvested five goals and an assist but on the road he was literally pointless; it took the Villa forward until December 31 to pick up his first attacking returns away from home, as the midlands outfit struggled badly on their travels.

That New Year’s Eve goal at Chelsea sparked a run of four strikes in five Gameweeks and suggested the new boss had finally worked out a way to utilise his star forward but Bent lasted just three more matches before disaster struck. With 78 minutes on the clock in the Gameweek 26 trip to Wigan, he sustained ruptured ankle ligaments and was to play no further part in his side’s campaign; Villa resultantly limped over the finishing line, scoring eight more goals in the remaining 12 matches to escape relegation by just two points. Bent, meanwhile, ended the FPL campaign with nine goals and 91 points to his name – 104 and 67 less than the hauls accrued over his previous two seasons respectively.

The Prospects

Now fully recovered and ready in time for pre-season training, Bent’s prospects have been afforded a timely boost with the installation of Paul Lambert to the Villa Park hotseat. McLeish’s negative style of play saw Villa end the 2011/12 campaign with just seven victories and a mere 37 goals – the second worst tally in the entire league – and there was no surprise when the former Birmingham boss bit the bullet.

Lambert is a different prospect. Guiding Norwich to 12th last term, his attacking style of play helped the Canaries rack up 52 goals; a tally only the top six managed to eclipse and one that Randy Lerner is hoping can continue in the upcoming campaign. For Fantasy managers, the new boss was a source of frustration last season as he chopped and changed his formation and personnel but bearing in mind his rebuilding of the Villa squad is in its infancy, there’s every chance Lambert will look for stability in order to steady the ship.

At present, Villa are bereft of up front options – with only Andreas Weimann and Nathan Delfouneso as first-team alternatives, Bent will arguably be the midlanders’ most crucial player in the season ahead, though investment looks inevitable before the end of August. Norwich’s dire defensive record under Lambert of 66 goals conceded suggests Villa’s attacking assets may well be the ones to watch and with spot-kick duties also in the bag, a return to the form of old is more than a possibility for Bent – given last term’s woes a drop in price is perhaps likely, down to 9.0 – 9.5.

A look at the opening schedule indicates he will be afforded every chance to hit the ground running. Bent welcomes Everton, Swansea and West Brom to Villa Park in the first six Gameweeks and, with trips to West Ham and Southampton also on the cards, only a visit to Newcastle seems a real stumbling block. The omens looks good, then, and free of injury and McLeish, Bent could once again prove a solid source of goals in the season ahead.

Yes mate, have seen a lot of him.

Workhorse midfielder. Biggest attribute is work ethic, but good in the challenge and a very good strike on him, so decent goalscoring potential. Likes to play in the hole rather than central or deep. Scored a poachers goal against Ghana in last worldcup and that sort of player - i.e. works hard, first to the ball, puts himself in the right places

he's box to box yes, and clocks up the km's, and sprays as many passes...

Nowhere near the class of Stevie, but perhaps a little sharper if anything. Looks like a late 20's Aussie surfy, but is decent.

Tim Cahill when he not playing up front, better similarity, although Tim heads a bit better

Keep in mind a major reason for the rotation at Norwich was the increased fitness needed to compete in the premier league which the majority of their players didn't have because it was a squad assembled from the lower leagues and that the class difference between the 'first teamers' and the bench players was very little.

Grant Holt played in all but one of their league games last season.

Was to do with the second point, he was their most important player so wasn't subjected to rotation like the others.

Expect the same for Bent at least, plus N'Zogbia, Albrighton etc. if they can find form.

Villa have little options up front - Bent will be on penalties and playing 90 minutes every game, in a much more attacking team with decent quality in midfield (Albrighton, N'Zogbia and Ireland are all creative). I always have to have a token Villa player so it might as well be the best.

You need at least one captain, I fall into that trap year in year out.

I would drop Bent personally, and also be highly controversial by getting Naismith instead of Jelavic. When they played together at Rangers Naismith was the one scoring not Jelly. Think how Jelly and Mandy played together for Croatia.

Take your advice and stop reading my posts then 😆

Like I said not perfect, you will end up having to play a keeper away some weeks but I should be manageable, just pick the guy you think is more likely for a CS or the guy you think will get more saves.

FWIW I'm moving away from having Noble. Am leaning towards Lallana on a rotation with Taarabt, Clint or Pilkington

It's so hard to predict though - one team could be useless (all three could be!) so once a team or two is useless, you have to remove them all as they're rotating with each other. I prefer rotating two defenders who are a little more likely to keep clean sheets (who are also cheap; players like Simpson and Caulker). There were teams in the PL who kept 3 or 4 clean sheets last season.

True, it is unpredictable and that's why I wouldn't swear by that strategy from the start but it's a great strategy to employ once a good rotation has been earmarked- I certainly didn't start with Swans and Newc rotation last season but once I did it was great.

The Departed has an absolutely brilliant script, one of the best, and it's visually amazing needless to say (Scoresese).

No Country is just as visually amazing but it's plot isn't as good as the departed. One of the characters (a villan, I won't spoil it) is one of the greatest characters in all cinema but even he can't carry the film to the level of The Departed.

Leon, decent on both levels but really out of it's depth in this three-way 🙂

You crazy. The Departed, whilst a solid remake, does not have a single memorable line. No Country is chock-full of them. Leon too. No Country lingers longer in the memory than The Departed.

    Guys,

I have a lingering suspicion that I am doing something really quite stupid, but when I try and create a team on the Sky Sport fantasy football site, I click Submit... and then nothing happens. I observe this behaviour in chrome and IE, and also with two different e-mail accounts when registering.

Anyone else had this happen to them, or know what I'm doing wrong?

cheers, ps paid up for the full membership to this site and its looking a highly astute purchase. I'm more of a lurker on these boards but will try and get a bit more involved as the season progreses.

Very good source amongst several decent sources available online in my opinion.

And if people are going to rubbish other people who provide transfer info then at least they should come up with their own evidence as to why what is being claimed is supposedly rubbish.

Pick to teams that rotate well for keepers

Then pick 3 different teams for defesive rotation.

Personally I'd want a Sunderland and QPR keeper or defender, their defensive record at home at the end of last season was superb. Stoke may also get back to that without Europa in the schedule.

Just a tip from previous years, don't get too bogged down in defensive rotation patterns, they rarely actually work. Apart from Swansea and Newcastle, no budget teams really kept many clean sheets (even in so called easy home fixtures). Just get two good defenders and three others. It's not as difficult as it's made out to be. Keeper rotation is fine with two decent teams.

Boooooo! Formulating *perfect* defensive rotations is the most enjoyable part of the game for me! Much more fun than "oh look, X scored 15 points last week, I'll put him in my team".

It's also the reason why I had Stephen Ward for about 20 weeks last season.

Wolves' fixtures dovetailed so well with the rest of my defence!

Wigan at home. Glorious moment. He also scored at home against the mighty Chels, but unfortunately I had him on my bench.

Wolves kept two clean sheets in the first three weeks, I wildcarded before week 4, brought Ward in, and then they didn't keep another clean sheet for the rest of the season!

It wasn't actually that much of a glorious moment. Was watching it on Sky Go, which is generally about a minute behind, and got a text from my brother saying 'f*cking Ward' before I'd even seen it. Totally ruined the drama. Bastard.

There were feck all clean sheets last season though, it's fun until you realize it doesn't actually work and you bench 9 point Danny Simpson regularly.

So many defensive bandwagons and then some unknown Wigan defender will score 15 points in the first week.

In my opinion, fpl will be up and running either tomorrow on tuesday because Telegraph ff starts on wednesday and they are offering free teams as well as better prizes. So if the game is ready, they will want to be out first to catch the casual players imo.

Thinking along the same lines of others by possibly picking Bent due to a different style of play used by Lambert. He's done well for me on other occasions.
