Using LiveFPL’s vast array of tools, we look at the squad make-ups and chip usage of the world’s leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

We will examine the 1,000 names in LiveFPL’s ‘Legendary Managers’ list – the historic cream of the crop, much like our own Hall of Fame – but chiefly those in the top 10k in the current overall rankings.

Between the two groups (where there will of course be some overlap), these are the managers who can offer us a better gauge of FPL ownership and chip strategy, as opposed to the overall figures that are skewed by the growing number of untouched ‘ghost teams’.

There is heaps of useful information beyond overall and top 10k figures on the LiveFPL site, of course, such as ownership stats for different rank tiers.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: GAMEWEEK 26 CAPTAINCY

Above: The Gameweek 26 captaincy stats for the top 10k (left) and the 1,000 historic FPL greats (right)

Let’s get the easy bit out of the way first.

Over 95% of both the top 10k and the ‘elite’ list unsurprisingly handed the armband to Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) for Liverpool’s Double Gameweek 26, and the Egyptian got off to a solid start with a double-digit haul against Norwich City.

FPL’s leading points scorer has a chance to build on that tally on Wednesday when the Reds take on Leeds United, who have conceded 30 goals in their last 10 matches.

TOP 10K: CHIP USAGE

Chip season has begun in earnest as we enter the final third of the campaign.

As of Gameweek 25, there was still a sizeable 38.6% of top 10,000 FPL managers who hadn’t used a single chip outside of the first Wildcard.

That number has dropped dramatically to 1.2% in Gameweek 26, with Wildcards and Triple Captain chips widely deployed.

Well over half (57.1%) of the leading managers have now used two or more chips; that number was down at 20% in Gameweek 25.

Usage of the second Wildcard almost doubled in Gameweek 26, no doubt off the back of Friday’s late-in-the-day Double Gameweek 28 and 29 announcements.

But it was the Triple Captain chip that saw the biggest spike, with over 70% of the top 10k activating it – and mostly entrusting Salah with the responsibility.

Around 6% of the high-flying bosses used either a Free Hit or their Bench Boost chip, meanwhile.

How the world’s leading FPL managers are set up for the Blank and Double Gameweeks 3

After the weekend’s matches, and with four fixtures of Gameweek 26 still to go, there’s not a great deal splitting the points tallies of the respective chip users in the top 10k: only around 5.5 points separates the average totals of the Free Hitters, Wildcarders and Triple Captainers.

As is to be expected, those bosses who didn’t use a single chip are already lagging behind and likely stand to lose further ground on Wednesday and Thursday.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: TEMPLATE SQUAD

There are some big changes in the top 10k template squad this week, with seven new entries compared to last week’s XV.

Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) is in for Ben Foster (£4.1m) between the posts, while Kieran Tierney (£5.1m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.2m) replace Tino Livramento (£4.3m) and Sergio Reguilon (£5.3m) in defence.

Three of the midfield are overhauled: Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m), Diogo Jota (£8.4m) and Phil Foden (£7.9m) make way for Son Heung-min (£10.7m), Bukayo Saka (£6.5m) and Raphinha (£6.5m), all of whom returned at the weekend.

And it’s the misfiring Michail Antonio (£7.7m) out, Armando Broja (£5.4m) in up top; the Watford front two retaining their places.

OWNERSHIP STATS FOR THE 1,000 ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’ IN GAMEWEEK 26

TOP 10K: TEMPLATE WILDCARD SQUAD

There’s even more change in the Wildcard template from last week, with those playing the chip in Gameweek 26 stocking up on Arsenal players, Wolverhampton Wanderers assets and a handful of options from Leeds and Aston Villa, not just taking advantage of these teams’ Double Gameweeks but also perhaps with one eye on Blank Gameweek 30.

Secure starter Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m) is in for the injured Jota as the third most-owned Liverpool player in the Wildcard template.

TOP 10K: AVERAGE NUMBER OF PLAYERS OWNED PER TEAM FOR GAMEWEEKS 27-30

No. of players whose teams have a guaranteed* fixture in Double/Blank Gameweek 2710.33 (of which 0.48 are Burnley players)
No. of players whose teams ‘double’ in Gameweek 284.35
No. of players whose teams ‘double’ in Gameweek 296.15
No. of players whose teams have a guaranteed* fixture in Blank Gameweek 304.49

*barring any unexpected postponements because of Covid/weather

Most FPL bosses are well set up for Blank Gameweek 27 and should be able to get out a starting XI with a free transfer, despite the blanks of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea – although with money probably tied up in Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) and co on the bench, there’s no surprise that some managers are considering a Free Hit (40% of the site readers we polled are doing this).

If Chelsea v Arsenal is slotted into Gameweek 28 as some people are touting, then then the average number of players who ‘double’ in a top 10k squad will rise from 4.35 to 6.42.

The average manager in the top 10,000 also has around half a dozen players with two fixtures in Double Gameweek 29.

Results in the FA Cup fifth round will dictate whether any more fixtures survive in Blank Gameweek 30 (the quarter-finals of that cup competition clash with this league round) but looking only at the three matches that are unaffected (Arsenal v Aston Villa, Wolves v Leeds and Leicester v Brentford), the average top 10k squad currently has only 4.49 active players.

I am coming round to a GW28 FH because I don't think I would want Southampton, Aston Villa, Wolves, Newcastle and Leeds players over the long term and Man City, Man Utd and Liverpool have relatively tougher fixtures in that GW.

    Repost written wrong.
Did a FH for GW26 so returning line up for GW27 is as follows with 1FT & £1.7ITB

    Sanchez
    Cancelo Digne Cucurella Livramento
    KDB Bowen Fernandes
    Edouard Antonio Dennis

    Sub: Foster, Luiz, TAA, Jota*

    Should i:
    A. Stick with things and hold for 2FT GW28
    B. Move in any particular player this week on a free and do another next week

Not sure if I should move in say Jiminez or Weghorst now to avoid any further price increases. I also need Salah back in at some point.

One of Edouard/Antonio -> Jiménez/Weghorst/Broja looks tempting but depends what moves (& how many) you have in mind for GW28

If I left as is, with 2FTs i could go for a -4, absolute max -8 if it was really worth it. Currently in a 3 way battle on ML with 30 points between us so don't want to give away unnecessarily.

I think WC27 is a really bad idea personally.

A good team in GW27 is not a good team for 28, 29 and 30 to some extent. A WC in GW28 will look very different from one in GW27 especially once we get more info on the blanks.

Anyone that is thinking of WC'ing in 27, I'd recommend FH'ing instead if you have a serviceable team in 28 or taking some hits to survive this week and then committing to a WC in 28.

WC27 can give the opportunity to BB28 which is much better than BB29 imo. A hit or two in GW28 gives me the same team if I would WC in 28. But WC27 gives me the opportunity to attack Leeds with Kane, have a City mid, get Weghorst for the double and keep Bruno as a placeholder for Salah.

It depends on the team and how you want to play the chips I guess. BB28 is a great opportunity to get it out of the way.

BB28 is quite good on paper. But to set it up you must remove all your Burnley and City players who are the key assets this week imo.

Also, the Chelsea fixture that could fall in GW28 and the potential blanks which we'll know only before GW28 will change your plan quite a lot imo.

It just doesn't mesh that well. You end up with a weaker GW27 on WC if you want to BB to the maximum in 28 or you have a decent-ish 27 that also then means you don't cover the run up until 30 well.

I've tried building it. There are too many uncertainties and it just doesn't work imo.

I don't love FH28. I thought this too at first.

But I realized I was losing my Arsenal players to get Wolves defenders. And if Arsenal double against Chelsea I'd probably prefer them. It just felt like it had less upside since the limiting factor is the fact you can only play 11 guys. BB28 is what's appealing if you have the team for it.

Whats wrong with losing Arsenal players(If they dont double) for wolves players(with a double)?
In 28 with a fh I can get Raphina/3 wolves/ Livra/ASM(if fit). All players with doubles and low ownership

Arsenal have Watford and might even double with Chelsea.

I am far from certain that Sa and Saiss will outscore Ramsdale and Tierney. Especially if they double.

A double for Arsenal would be nice. Then I would take hits for Wolves/Raphina and play Ramsdale/Martineli/Tierney and most likely BB that week.

With regards to City and Burnley, I would have Cancelo and a City mid and only Weghorst from Burnley. I can also get a Burnley defender instead of a 2nd Wolves defender (or Livramento), hoping Burnley do not blank in BGW30.

Yes the Chelsea fixture can be a spanner in the works I agree with you on that Camzy. But I guess you can't have it all. Atm I'm only interested in maybe a Chelsea defender for that run, keeping in mind Chelsea blank in 30.

Also I do not intend to have 15 players with a double, even in past seasons when I tried the BB at the end of the season you always have a few players who play only one game from the double.

Any WC in GW27 is unlikely to possess sufficient Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea moving forward for future game weeks and is a crazy idea, to be frank.

      Hi camzy

Appreciate your thoughts. Personally, i'm considering both right now, as my GW26 team needs chopping.

Currently leaning towards a WC27, and save the FH for later on.
If I can build a team like this, and for instance do Mee to Rudiger in GW28, I really can't see the big win in wildcarding in 28 in stead?

      Ramsdale/Forster
      Mee/Tarkowski/TAA/Saiss/Digne
      Salah/Son/JWP/Raph/Saka
      Weggy/Jimenez/Broja

Southampton and Wolves got nice fixtures, and this gives me a chance to attack 27 with Burnley still. Thinking to BB, when a good week should come, 36 maybe.

I do miss out on City and Kane GW27, but I think the team I would Wildcard in 28 would look a lot like this anyways

I disagree because I don't think a WC in 28 will look anything like this.

It will have triple Arsenal, Chelsea might have a DGW in 28 and have amazing fixtures (while also blanking in 27) and you have 3 Burnley players who are more or less deadweight after this week.

You also don't take particularly good advantage of this week without any City, United or Kane.

Apologies for such a long-winded reply, however I'm using WC in 27 and happy to share my plans.

Firstly, I'll have a fairly decent (although not spectacular) team for GW27:

      Dubravka
      Coady - Cancelo - KWP - Digne
      Son - Raphinha - Coutinho
      Jimi - Weghorst - Broja

I'll have no subs on my bench (Salah - Trent - Ramsdale - Saka) but I'm willing to take the chance on that for one GW.

For GW28 I will have the same players, but will switch Weghorst to a Newcastle or Arsenal forward giving me 11 DGW players plus Salah, Trent, Cancelo and Son for my BB.

In GW29, I will probably switch Coutinho and Digne to VVD and Kulusevski giving me 9 DGW players in that week.

Of course a lot could happen between now and then but at least that's my plan.

It depends on present team and what chips you have. But the upside of getting Kane, Son plus 2 City midfielders and 3 Burnley players in 27 on a FH and then WC in 28 is much higher in my view

I think that GW27 team is poor to be honest.

It has just Cancelo, only 1 Burnley, and no United. This team also has 0 Chelsea and no easy way to manage that. Couple that with upcoming knowledge we will get in GW28 regarding BGWs in 30. I think it's better to use FTs this week, hits even, and then WC in 28 with the extra knowledge instead.

But I guess if your BB in 28 fires it could work out. I think it would've been better to WC in 26 if you wanted to plan the BB in 28.

    4. Conners
      • 6 Years

The other reason I chose to WC in 27 over FH is simply that I wanted to save my FHs in order to have one for the blank GW30 and the other for GW36 (big DGW).

    5. Conners

If having a slightly below-par team for one Gameweek (GW27) means getting 11 & 9 DGW players for the next two GW's, that's a trade-off I'm happy to take.

As far as Chelsea are concerned, I can do VVD to Rudiger or James after DGW29. Beyond that there's no other Chelsea players of interest to me other than perhaps Mount who is cheap enough.

    6. ElliotJHP

Think you can still attack this week, I am looking at Kane + Son, Burnley x 2 a City mid and praying Saints x 3 turn Norwich over.

The big question is Chelsea and Arsenal to an extent. Chelsea is a tricky one, James is the only player I would really want, perhaps Rudiger. Unsure on James immediate minutes and potential doubles as a result of medium term injury, but it'll be a risk I will want to take.

    Pope
    Cancelo Dalot Pieters
    Sterling Mahrez Son JWP
    Kane Ronaldo Weghorst

    Bench is B.Williams + fodder

Obviously a choice in Ronaldo over Bruno, but believe Ronaldo has to explode soon. Can't keep missing chances any longer.

Taking hits this GW reduces the potential gains of FH27.

King to Broja this GW (play with 9) keep the 6 Liv/Ars for DGW29, then FH30, WC35, BB36. GW28 is a poor DGW where SGW players and a few DGWers should be fine.

Not sure losing King over Antonio (hardly any GI) and Watkins (not first choice). Prefer Weghorst over Broja this GW, ideally go with both.

Don't agree GW28 is poor for doubles. There are potentially good returns for the likes of wolves defenders,

I have a choice, what would you do?

    1) Use FH and get in Fernandes and Sterling
    2) No FH but -4 with Williams and Bowen (instead of Fernandes and Sterling)

    With Free Hit
    Pope
    Cancelo, Livramento, Dawson
    Son, Coutinho, Fernandes, Sterling
    Kane, Broja, Weghorst

    Without Free Hit (-4)
    Pope
    Cancelo, Livramento, Williams, Dawson
    Son, Coutinho, Bowen
    Kane, Broja, Weghorst

Basically is a FH worth 4 points and having Fernandes and Sterling?

I would assume most drafts will be pending injury updates and Peps presser. Team this weekend is easier to predict after losing last weekend and FA Cup game v Peterbrough after Everton

I doubt Pep will play Bernardo in F9 so likely to revert back to #8 with KDB. Front 3 will depend on the injury status of Jesus and Grealish. If both missing then expect Foden, Sterling and Mahrez.

Reason was Bernardo is much better defensively than Mahrez, and as we saw Pep was right, Spurs were good on counter attack, so the change did not help but its very logical from Peps pov.

    Thoughts on the below FH27?

    Pope

    Bruno/Son/Mahrez/X
    Kane/Weghorst/X

Comes down to Livra/Dalot/Sterling/Broja vs KWP/Maguire/Foden/Adams.

Going all in with total cheapies on bench.

Exactly my predicament right now, mate.

      A) Cancelo Mee KWP Sancho

      B) Walker Mee KWP Sterling

      C) Cancelo Pieters Livra Sterling

I have Foden in normal team and I feel one of him and Sterling will be benched. Mahrez probably starts after being benched. But its just logic guess.

    FH team:

    Pope
    Cancelo, XXX, Mee
    Fernandes, Son, XXX, Mahrez
    Kane, Weghorst, Broja

    Foster; XXX, Amartey, XXX.

    A) Maguire, Foden, Livramento, Ramsey.
    B) Livramento, Sterling, Tsimikas, Gilmour.

So basically do I go for a very weak bench in order to afford Sterling or get Foden, Maguire and a solid bench.

Just ride the storm this week? Looks like I could field 10/11 if all fit:

    Sanchez (Foster)
Livra / Cancelo / Coufal* (TAA* / Tierney*)
Bowen / Bruno / Ramsey / Cornet (Salah*)
    Dennis / King / Ronaldo

May just move Ronaldo to Kane/Weghorst & may take -4 for Broja at most

    Advice very much appreciated
