Burnley’s defence in superb form ahead of Double Gameweek 27

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Wednesday’s Double Gameweek 26 fixtures.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Cornet and Smith Rowe 4

There weren’t too many injuries to round up from Wednesday, with Diego Llorente (£4.5m) reportedly absent from the Leeds team because of a hamstring problem and Rodrigo Bentancur (£5.0m) said to have picked up a thigh issue in Spurs’ defeat to Burnley.

Vicente Guaita (£4.6m) was absent from the Palace squad, meanwhile, after sustaining a knee injury on Saturday.

The main fitness-related headline was the absence of Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m), although Sean Dyche said after full-time on Wednesday that the Ivorian could be back for Gameweek 27.

Josh King (£5.9m)’s substitution at Vicarage Road was also later explained as partly injury-related.

“I don’t know, we’ll have to see tomorrow. He took a knock in our last training session, unfortunately, so this exacerbated the problem for him.” – Roy Hodgson

FPL TALKING POINTS

Leeds’ defence the best advert for Spurs assets in Gameweek 27

Four days after producing one of the best performances from any Premier League side this season, Tottenham Hotspur slumped to a 1-0 loss to Burnley.

That result at the Etihad looks anomalous now, as it is sandwiched by four league defeats to Chelsea, Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Clarets.

Chances were few and far between in Lancashire, although Son Heung-min (£10.8m) came within inches of an assist when first Harry Kane (£12.2m) nodded the Korean’s free-kick against the bar and then Dejan Kulusevski (£6.0m), who again started behind the front two before moving to right wing-back, curled a shot from another Son pass just wide.

“The reality is this. That we lost four games of the last five. No one deserves this type of situation – the club, me, the payers and fans, but this is the reality.

“I came in to try to improve the situation in Tottenham but maybe in this moment, I don’t know, I’m not so good to improve the situation.

“I’m too honest to close my eyes, you understand, and to continue to say ‘ok I want to finish the season in this way and ok my salary is good’.

“But I’m not this type of person. I have ambition, I’m a person who has ambition, I hate to lose and we lost, I repeat, four games in the last five games. And for me, I repeat, this is unacceptable.” – Antonio Conte

Antonio Conte’s remarkable post-match comments, some of which are above, don’t suggest a happy camp or that Spurs players are ‘must-buys’ ahead of Gameweek 27, when many managers are playing their Free Hit.

The one positive to cling onto is that it’s Leeds next, who have the division’s worst defence in 2021/22 and also on current form: they’ve shipped 36 goals in their last 11 matches alone.

Liverpool ran riot against the Whites, racking up six goals and spurning more chances besides: their xG of 4.44 was one of the highest of the season.

Raphinha (£6.5m), incidentally, turned in another below-par showing, despite returning to Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI.

Burnley in form ahead of Double Gameweek 27

Any FPL managers who went early on Burnley assets for their two Double Gameweeks have generally been handsomely rewarded so far, with four clean sheets and a Wout Weghorst (£6.5m) haul thrown in for good measure.

The hope for the rest of us, who belatedly come to the Clarets party ahead of Double Gameweek 27, is that their good form can carry on into the upcoming round of matches.

(above image from Soccerstats)

The goals aren’t flying in, it must be said: Sean Dyche’s side are the second-lowest scorers this season and even during this six-game purple patch against admittedly tough opposition, they are still scoring at a rate of less than one goal per match.

But in Crystal Palace and Leicester, they’ll at least be coming up against defences in not-too-brilliant shape, not to mention two backlines that have shipped goals aplenty from set plays in 2021/22.

Weghorst was excellent again against Spurs despite a blank and an expected goal involvement (xGI) of just 0.04, while Jay Rodriguez (£5.2m) stands to benefit in terms of starts if Cornet is ruled out for any length of time. Rodriguez, in fact, has a better rate of xGI than Weghorst since the Dutchman’s arrival and had two big chances to his strike partner’s zero on Wednesday night.

The main focus has to be on the defence, however.

Nick Pope (£5.4m) has remarkably conceded just three goals in his last nine appearances, registering six clean sheets along the way. He hasn’t even been that overworked, ranking just joint-10th for saves made across his last half-dozen run-outs, which is a testament to the back four in front of him.

Ben Mee (£4.8m) jumped the gun on our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ inclusion with the match-winner against Spurs, topping the shot count at Turf Moor ahead of those meetings with the aerially suspect backlines of Palace and Leicester.

Connor Roberts (£4.5m) is a name worth mentioning for bargain-hunters, too, after registering three chances created and as many bonus points in Gameweek 26.

Wildcarders v Triple Captainers

A 6-0 win for Liverpool would usually be a Scout Notes headline but their players now take a backseat in Gameweek 27, so they temporarily move away from our thoughts.

The main Fantasy narrative last night was over Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.1m) latest haul, which took his overall Gameweek 26 score to a whopping 28 points.

It’s advantage to Triple Captainers, then, but big returns from fresh targets elsewhere – including double-digit scores for semi-popular Wildcard buys Andrew Robertson (£7.2m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m) – means that there’ll be very little in it by the time that Arsenal v Wolves comes to a head on Thursday:

It’ll be future Gameweeks, and not this one, that will properly determine just how successful each chip strategy is.

EDOUARD AND KING DISAPPEARING FROM VIEW

It was a dismal Double Gameweek 26 for owners of Josh King (£5.9m) and Odsonne Edouard (£6.6m), who failed to muster a return between them. King – who has just one attacking return in his last 12 appearances – was hooked after 50 minutes of Watford’s 4-1 home defeat on Wednesday, while Edouard was only on the pitch for a matter of seconds across Palace’s two matches.

Form and rotation risk respectively are good reasons to sell the pair, with only Watford’s forthcoming double-header in Gameweek 28 the smallest of incentives to keep hold of King.

The Norwegian failed to register a shot against the Eagles but Saturday’s goalscorer Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m) was prominent enough to maintain interest, spurning two big chances here.

Watford’s defensive blip after some promising displays at the back ought to be put in context: Palace scored four times but had an xG of just 0.71, only registering seven shots throughout.

Two-goal Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) was at his best and Conor Gallagher (£6.2m) delivered a fifth double-digit haul of the campaign but without a double in the upcoming matches, Palace assets will surely only come onto the FPL radar if they are dumped out of the FA Cup by Stoke next week and have a Gameweek 30 match going ahead.

Beginning to contemplate Pope(C) over Kane. May be silly as despite poor form Leicester still tend to score often and Palace will be on a high after scoring 4 last night (as well as being far better at home than away) but even though Kane and Son are playing a dreadful defence it's very hard to know what shape they'll be in after Conte's comments last night.

I mean, that's bold! But CP - Watford aside - haven't exactly been free-scoring. But you can deffo see them and Lei scoring one each.

Conte's comments might invigorate?! Plus, as you say, it's Leeds...

True, even with Spurs in middling form they should put a few past Leeds, and if I can see Pope conceding in either or even both games then I best avoid

Mind you, I say that, but Burnley's defence - as the article is all about haha - has definitely improved, so *shrug*. Could do worse! Are you chasing/bored with normal options? Might be an option then!

I'm top of my MLs at the minute and in a decent position regarding chips (still have TC and both FHs and don't need to use one this week) so I'm OK there. I guess I'll see how the next day goes and see how I feel, cheers for the input, good luck

Got quite a nice dilemma that died at the bottom of the last article. Thoughts?

    A) Saka + Maupay --> JWP + Weghorst (next week: Bowen --> Saka & Weghorst --> Broja)

    or

    B) Saka + Maupay --> Sterling/Mahrez + Broja (next week Saka --> Bowen or Jamsey)

I'm leaning towards B because I have no other City cover; SOU vs NOR looks good; no hit; and that will let me have a midfield of Sterling, Jamsey, Saka, Salah, & Son.

    My team for this gameweek

    DDG

    Davies, Cancello, Livra,
    Bowen, Foden,
    King, Antonio, Dennis

Do i need to FH or could i get away with -4 to field 11?

Still have WC and 2 FHs

Maybe don't think about it as "need" to FH or not, but what the potential value to doing so would be, especially given the other chips you still have. Personally, I'd FH that to get DDH, Davies, Bowen, King, Antonio and Dennis out for better options

No worries. Some people advocate for looking at points predictors, comparing your current team to a potential FH, and if the predictor thinks you can get 20 points more on a FH, that's the tipping point. Obviously that's just one way of thinking about it, but I don't think it's a bad starting point

Depends on your team. As it stands I have 3 x West Ham (playing liverpool) and City play Utd which could be tight. Also leeds, villa, southamton, all have doubles that could be high scoring. Wolves have a great defensive double.

Chelsea would also be nice if that happened

Mini league rivals have DDG, I'm on a free hit this GW and leaning towards keeping DDG for Watford at home over Pope as already have Mee

Good safe idea or would people gamble on the Burnley defensive double up?

Its quite embarrassing reading the comments last night on ppl who TCd Salah mocking WCers and FHers. You can bet WCers would have done the same if Salah somehow blanked. The fact is you cannot judge anything without looking at individual teams and you cant judge it before GW30. There's way too much gloating at the expense of others on here and twitter

There seems to be a big rivalry based on chip strategies this week. PPl are more concerned with whether they beat others using a different strategy rather than whether it was the best strategy for how their team was set up.

      Agree.
WC is the most powerful chip as it goes beyond single game week, those who played it this week may still handsomely outscore TC'ers over the course of next few game weeks.
Also let's not forget that most would have captained Salah anyway so only have 28 points to make up.

Salah did very well for TCers but there were popular sgers who didnt do well so it evened out to some extent. I would have the same score now if I TCd instead of WCd but others would have been set up worse than me so a WC would have been more beneficial

It's typical of this place and Twitter on matchday I guess. At the end of the day this is only a game and nothing that happens is in our hands so luck is an enormous part of it. I was disappointed last night while I sat on 143 on BB and still 4 to play tonight with the way some go on! Better to just try and have some fun with it with the more level-headed players and people you can have good-natured banter with in minileagues. If I ever tried to focus on overall rank and getting to an insanely high rank I think I'd never have any fun

Oh, I know well, I think when that happens then its time give up on the game for sure. This is my first season back playing in about 6 years. After this year I probably wont play for another few, its too time consuming and sometimes knocks the enjoyment out of football. I love football but when watching games seeing who gets assists, bookings etc isn't the way to watch football. I entered this year as work were doing a league and few mates in golf club. I'm top of both mini leagues at the moment, if I dont win either its no big deal.

cant take a bit of banter then this site isnt for you (and i dont mean banter in the richard keys andy gray sense, i mean a bit of trash talking after you did something in FPL that paid off) theres times when it goes over the top on here for sure but sorry didnt see that last night. no worse that LoL x or y. just accept it and move on. if you have a good score without a TC then throw that back in their faces.

Ducked out of here early last night - sometimes this place can turn a bit mean-spirited for me during matches. I TCed Salah & got my highest ever GW score - and yeah, theres nothing wrong with celebrating this kind of success, but don't get the need to beat up on others at the same time

I don’t get mocking others over a game but I get that to a game so don’t get upset by it.

      Current GW 27 Team:

      Butland

      Cancelo Duffy
      Bowen Gallagher Foden
      Jimenez Antonio Dennis

Not Playing: Ramsdale, TAA, VVD, Tierney, Saka, Salah

I want to avoid playing the FH this week and rather than filling the team with Burnley players i am leaning towards SOTON as they have great fixtures and may mean i can save my WC (was planning to use in 28).

      Question is, who do i switch out....my thoughts are;

      Duffy OUT Livramento IN
      Dennis OUT Broja IN

      Is Livra nailed now?

Or i could do Dennis to Weghorst as then i would only have 1 Burnley player to worry about.

If on FH and have spare cash, would you go for JWP in 352 or Broja in 343 ?

Broja has the better xG so I would go with him. JWP is a nice alternative but I suspect he will need a pen or direct free kick to score a goal. His assist threat is good and Norwich are vulnerable from set pieces

Trying to avoid using a FH this week, need to make one move for a -4 to field 11, which of the following do you prefer for one week? Would likely do a reverse and bring that player back in after next week.

      1. Salah > Mahrez
      2. Salah > KDB
      3. Salah > Sterling
      4. Saka > JWP

I have Trent and Robbo, intention was to be bringing in James/rudiger from 28 or 29 for one of them.

But now In the short term I’m thinking Trent to mee -4 for 11 players in 27

Likely 29 switch digne (after his double) the disappointment to James

Leaves me with Robbo cancelo James ait mee from 29

      Good idea?

      A) Lowton (cpl, LEI)- Dropped but can roberts play 4 games in 2 weeks?
      B) Reguilon (lee) - may have gotten Covid at a good time, does he come back into the 11?
      C) Westwood (cpl, LEI) - Covid but does he get his place back after 2 huge wins in his absence?

Tough one. Cornet has the double but might miss one of the games, and Bowen has a tough fixture. I'd see how Wolves look tonight before deciding, think someone here said their xGC was a lot higher in recent weeks so if they look a bit leaky I'd be tempted to bench Cornet

      Pope
      Cancelo Mee Livra

      A) Broja to Elanga
      B) Mee to Roberts

Not playing FH. Want Spurs coverage for Leeds game. Which of these moves would you do? My team below.

      a) Salah > Son (Bruno to Salah GW 28)
      b) Toney, TAA, Foden > Weghorst, Son, Mee (-8)
      c) Watkins, TAA, Foden > Weghorst, Son, Mee (-8)
      d) Watkins, TAA, Foden > Kane, JWP, Mee (-8)
      e) Something else?

      Foster
      Cancelo, Tarkowski, Emerson, Dalot
      Fernandes, Bowen, Foden, Ramsey
      Dennis, Toney

      Subs: Ramsdale, TAA, Salah, Watkins

Hmm not so sure on Salah to Son now with those Conte comments, Spurs not a happy family at the moment it seems.

I already own Kane and Mahrez. I may go Salah to Sterling before WC28.

"The reality is this.

And for me, I repeat, this is unacceptable.”

It's in the article, he said plenty more but that's the brunt of it. I thought when he first signed that he didn't plan to be there long but sounds like he might feel like he can do no more
