Tuesday was a busy day at Swansea City. Just hours after announcing Jose Manuel Flores as the first transfer of the Michael Laudrup regime, the Welsh club revealed they had also acquired the services of attacking midfielder Jonathan De Guzman. The 24-year-old arrives on a season-long loan deal from Spanish side Villarreal, with an option to make the move permanent.

De Guzman is primed to fill the vacancy created by the end of Gylfi Sigurdsson’s loan spell and has the chance to reunite with Laudrup, having played under the Dane at Mallorca a couple of season ago – a factor he admitted was key to the decision:

Once the opportunity came along to join Swansea and Michael Laudrup it was a done deal. I didn’t have to think twice about it. I’m grateful for the opportunity and grateful that the manager has acknowledged me as a player. I’m fortunate that I will be working under a good coach at Swansea who lets you be free and allows you to do what you do best. I like to attack as a midfielder, box to box, and hopefully I can add my share of goals along the way.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, De Guzman left his home country Canada at the age of 12 to join the youth set-up at Dutch club Feyenoord. De Guzman was not allowed to appear for the first-team until the age of 18 and less than a week after that milestone birthday, he made his debut in September 2005. Despite his young age, he became an established figure in the Feyenoord first-team and his first three seasons at the club saw him make 94 appearances, scoring 20 goals and assisting a further 20. The following two campaigns were plagued with injury, however; De Guzman featured just 15 times between 2008-10, scoring three times and providing a pair of assists. Available on a free transfer, he moved to Mallorca to team up with Laudrup for the first time.

Handed a role behind a lone forward in Laudrup’s 4-2-3-1, De Guzman flourished despite his side’s poor campaign – he featured 33 times, scoring five and assisting four goals as Mallorca finished just one place above the relegation places. The following year he was snapped up by Villarreal for €8.5m but a change of manager midway through the season resulted in his game time rapidly diminishing – De Guzman ended up with just a single assist to show from his 19 appearances as the Yellow Submarine dropped out of La Liga.

The Prospects

With regards to De Guzman’s potential, much will depend on Laudrup’s ability to adapt his brand of football to the Premier League – though there’s no question the omens look good. His preferred style and team shape are similar to Brendan Rodgers’, suggesting a continuation of last season’s form may well be on the cards, with little tinkering required. Laudrup has great faith in De Guzman’s abilities and is likely to install him as a key figure within the first-team set-up; the manager explained the reasoning behind his latest acquisition to the Swansea website earlier:

He receives and moves the ball, can play in small spaces, so I think he will fit in perfectly with this team. He will suit the style here because he is used to that kind of football. He is an offensive player, but he can also play anywhere in midfield which can give you some alternatives.

De Guzman can be expected to be priced relatively low across the Fantasy games; bearing in mind Gylfi Sigurdsson was valued at 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in the previous campaign, there’d be no surprise to see the new boy come in at 5.5 – 6.0, now that the Swans have established themselves in the top-flight. He’s also likely to get his fair share of set-pieces; De Guzman took the vast majority of free-kicks and corners under Laudrup at Mallorca – a factor which will certainly further his appeal when assessing cut-price options for our Fantasy squads.

There’s little doubt De Guzman has a tough task ahead of him in the eyes of many Fantasy managers; living up to the exploits of Sigurdsson as Swansea’s chief creator is no easy feat but a kind opening schedule could well see him flourish. Laudrup’s men have three home clashes in the first five Gameweeks (WHM, SUN, EVE) and with trips to QPR and Villa also on the agenda, he’s set to be handed plenty opportunity to show whether he’s capable of stepping into Gylfi’s shoes in the campaign ahead.

Looks like FPL didn't appreciate my email about just releasing 3 player prices a day, not had a response.

Kagawa and Cisse seem right but I'm a little disappointed about Siggy, didn't think he'd suffer quite that much inflation.

8.5 would be fair. If they have Ade and vdv and bale then competition for bonus will be intense. A tad overpriced.

Yeah, quite a few attacking options to choose from for Spurs good fixtures. I always thought reputation was a factor in pricing and Siggy doesn't have the level of mainstream recognition that Adam built up in his first PL season, thought Siggy would be 8.5 max.

It is a factor for sure but stats have to equally considered too. The guy's PPG couldn't be ignored and playing for a top four team sealed it.

There's already a lot of choice in the 9m category from those released so far. If Siggy is that price Bale could be stratospheric.

Doesn't this rather show that Siggy is FFS's first FPL bandwagon. Spurs still signing players, not so much as a pre-season friendly to go on and only guesswork how they'll line-up/play. Siggy might prove to be FPL gold, but he was always one to watch first half dozen games, then start drawing conclusions.

Ade/Bale remain the key Spurs attacking talent, assuming former signs.

I agree. There's only room for 9-13m players at the start of the season and I can't see me picking the likes of Siggy when Chelsea players have a double and there's rooney, Valencia, Ade, Bale, Ageuro, Silva, Dave (possibly Bent) all waiting in the wings.

The Van der Vaart signing for Hamburger SV rumour turned out to be a PR own-goal by the German club which was similar to the one made by Bayern Munich last year.

Hamburger SV said earlier today that they were going to be making a "major announcement", and then people put two and two together and made five. It turned out to be just the announcement of a supporter share option and "HSV Campus", a new training centre for the club's young players.

    http://www.abendblatt.de/sport/article2336565/HSV-praesentiert-Fananleihe-und-Campus-im-Volkspark.html

I've just flown back from Bremen this morning and, believe me, the North German media aren't expecting a quick signing, if at all. Hamburger SV would have to take out substantial private backing to afford Van der Vaart.

Schalke was always the more likely, but both the player and Spurs have implied that DVD is going nowhere. Sounds like Hamburg's tactic was similar to the one Tony Fernandes attempted the other day. 🙂

Spurs are about to launch their new kit today and VdV is front and centre of the away kit. If he'd been announced as leaving a few hours before it would have been a huge cock-up.
Still think he'll end up going though.

Which player's prices would be released tomorrow? Uptil now 5 out of 6 players whose prices have been released are new signings. Cisse too hasn't played in the PL for too long. I would guess one of Podolski/Giroud, Jelavic and Fabio maybe.

Cisse was massively under priced last season, £7m, look at his goal ratio.

£9.5m is cheap, I expect him to score over 20 goals next seaon.

Anyways, the price doesnt really matter, as we all have the same amount of money.

The higher the prices are, the harder the game will be & I love a challenge.

How will his ratio be affected by whether he's settled in or not?
He might score goals this season but his shots/goals ratio was outrageous and unsustainable last year. No striker - doesn't matter who it is - can keep it up long term.

He might still score a lot of goals sure but he'll need more chances to do so IMO.

Re FORCA INTER's Suarez comment above

Maybe you would be better served to say potentially the best striker in the Prem.
Leading the league in hitting the woodwork and getting multi game suspensions wont qualify.
Also his best crosser last year was a 50 year old ball hog munchkin (who I love dearly)
Maybe with a proper gaffer and Gerrard's superior service this year it will all come together.
    Potential is certainly there

Saying the potential is there does him a huge disservice. He is already a world class player as he has shown when playing with technically gifted players for Uruguay & Ajax. Not a surprise he wasn't the best player in the league last year in a poor & tactically inept Liverpool team. They should join the 21st century and play him as part of a 4-3-3

Judge his performances not statistics. He almost never has a bad game, makes a mockery of just about every defender and most games he's one of the best on the pitch. Yes his scoring touch has been a bit off but there's much more to his game than goals

From what I've observed over the last few seasons, they base prices on projected points and the team that they play for.

It wouldn't make sense to price him at £6.5-7.5 in a Spurs midfield.

That said, I thought he'd come in at £8-8.5 so a bit dearer than I'd thought, but his PPG is pretty solid. Playing for a better team too now.

Siggy at 9.0m is still decent if he plays each week 'in the hole' behind the striker and not as a box to box midfielder, BUT if Bale is no more than 10.0m then I would rather pick him, especially to start with.

Cisse value being so high means that FPL believe that Newcastle weren't a flash in the pan and that they will kick on from that. I can't see them being as good as last year but to be fair when you look at their team there are good players in all positions.

I'm hoping Ben Arfa's price won't have shot up because of his late season form.
