We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Manchester City v Manchester United in our latest Scout Notes.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

DE BRUYNE INSPIRES CITY

Man City defeated rivals Man Utd 4-1 in the derby on Sunday afternoon, with Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) producing a whopping 18-point haul courtesy of two goals, an assist and maximum bonus.

The Belgian’s brace means that he has now scored eight Premier League goals on home turf in 2021/22, a tally only Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) and Sadio Mane (£11.7m) can beat.

His underlying numbers at the Etihad were particularly eye-catching, too, as he registered six goal attempts, five shots in the box and five created chances.

Following the match, Pep Guardiola was quick to praise his captain, whilst also playing down a possible injury problem:

“A little bit there but I think it is not a problem. He makes an incredible effort and he is playing the minutes very well. He is back at his best. He played with pain at the beginning of the season but Kevin is at his best. He is strong. I spoke with him and he was focused on assists, but I said you have to score goals and win games. Hopefully he can continue being fit and scoring these goals.”

Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m), meanwhile, has now racked up five double-figure hauls in his last nine Premier League appearances, and actually trumped De Bruyne on the day for goal attempts (eight) and shots in the box (seven).

“I don’t know if I’m a great goalscorer; I’m trying to help the team as much as I can every game. This season, I’m more efficient because of the work we do in training. I’m trying to get in the box, I’m trying to be involved everywhere, to score goals and to help the team.” – Riyad Mahrez

Elsewhere, Jack Grealish (£7.5m) put in one of his best performances in a City shirt to date, as he vindicated Guardiola’s call to select him in front of Raheem Sterling (£10.7m).

In fact, he did everything but score, which his manager touched on after the match.

“He was excellent. (At one) moment he will understand in the final third, ‘this ball is for me’. He is very generous. When you see Phil (Foden) and Riyad (Mahrez) in that moment, it is their ball. This is the next step for Jack, but in terms of decision making, and using players in space, he was exceptional.” – Pep Guardiola on Jack Grealish

Following today’s win, City have now won 16 of their last 18 Premier League games, although their lack of ‘doubles’ and Gameweek 30 fixture suggests most Fantasy managers transfers will be focused elsewhere, at least for now.

UNITED COLLAPSE

With Raphael Varane (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m) both absent after testing positive for Covid-19, United unsurprisingly struggled at the back, as they allowed 24 goal attempts, 20 shots in the box and three big chances.

Notably, eight chances were allowed from their right-flank, as they struggled to contain the impressive Grealish and Joao Cancelo (£7.0m).

Setting up in a 4-4-2/4-2-4 system, the idea according to Ralf Rangnick was “to be as compact as possible” and “when we have possession, to be dangerous on the counter-attack.”

That meant Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) and Paul Pogba (£7.4m) both played central roles high up the pitch, with Anthony Elanga (£4.8m) and Jadon Sancho (£8.9m) on the flanks.

Sancho’s strike, meanwhile, means that he has now been directly involved in four goals in his last five Premier League appearances.

Above: Manchester United’s average position map v Manchester City in Gameweek 28, featuring front four Anthony Elanga (36), Paul Pogba (6), Bruno Fernandes (18) and Jadon Sancho (25)

The strikerless system, of sorts, was partly due to Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.3m) and Edinson Cavani (£8.4m) both missing out through injury, which Rangnick discussed after full-time:

“We had two Covid cases midweek with Rafa Varane and Luke Shaw. Cristiano (Ronaldo) had some problems with his hip flexor again on Friday. That is why they are not available.” – Ralf Rangnick on his absentees

“I don’t know. I was hoping to have them available for this game. We have two important games coming up against Spurs and Atletico and we have to put our full focus on that.” – Ralf Rangnick on when Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani will return

The defeat, whilst hugely disappointing, is just the second United have suffered in 14 games under Rangnick, with some big fixtures coming up for the Red Devils, which includes Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 29.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo, Rodri, De Bruyne (Gundogan 80), Bernardo, Mahrez, Grealish, Foden

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles, McTominay, Fred, Elanga (Lingard 64), Pogba (Rashford 64), Sancho, Fernandes

Bench order right here? Plan is to roll transfer so in 30 I can do Rudiger & Wood > Amartey & Vardy for free.

    Ramsdale
    White / TAA / James
    Coutinho / Salah / Raphinha / Saka / Kulusevski
    Wood / Kane

    Dubravka / Rudiger / Broja / Kilman

Team is in good shape overall but I'm trying very hard to get Son into the team. I think he's a super strong pick for the next 4 weeks or so and I'm willing to take a few hits to get him.

    Team is:

    Ramsdale DDG
    TAA Cancelo James Tierney Livra
    Salah Saka Raphinha Bowen Maddison
    Kane Broja King
    (1.9m ITB)

There are two main ways I can get Son.

    A) Bowen + Cancelo -4 > Son + Holgate/Amartey (depends if I want to be stronger in 29 or 30)
    B) Bowen + DDG + King -8 > Son + Foster + Richardson 4.4m fodder

Being able to keep Cancelo is a big draw of B. But I'd essentially be taking a -8 just to get Son since King and DDG transfers are purely to raise funds.

    C) Don't get Son. Do Bowen > Kulusevski for free.

Essentially then it boils down to is Son -8 better than Kulusevski? I'm genuinely not sure....

I’d go A or C. Kulu is v good cover as you already have Kane. But I also want him in so in a similar position. Just seems to ruin my team (which is v similar to yours)

C seems the best option since u already got kane. Dont think spending quartet of ur budget on inconsistent spurs worth it.
I have son but i dont have kane.

I dunno. Maybe I just value Son super highly. I think he could be the highest scoring player in the game for the next 2 GWs. That's worth a -8 to me.

But Kulu covers the same team at a much cheaper price. Tough call.

I much prefer B to A if you're set on Son. Assuming you've BBed, there is some structural value at least to liquidising your budget by downgrading DDG (no longer required imo) & retiring a striker spot. I'm looking at a similar move though fortunately only -4 of Havertz & Jimenez -> Son & 4.4

I think I agree with you on B over A.

But C is now looking quite enticing. I save some money which can then be used to upgrade King or Maddison > Havertz in GW31.

B basically gets your team to where you want it to be so prefer that over A.

Personally rate Son as a key pick and see Kulu as a trap but I’ve been wrong many times!

This is a similar problem to mine and I ended up WCing last GW mainly to get Son and Kane as I decided they were so vital.

Yeah but I want Son! 😛

4.7m and -8 points be damned.

Let's see what happens tonight. If Kulu is good and looks like he can cover Son I'll likely be reasonable and go C. But if Son hauls or Kulu is benched/looks off, it'll be hard to ignore him.

I have not bought back Salah yet, which obviously worked this week. But I now have a quandry as to whether I:

    A. Havertz -> Salah
    B. Weghorst -> Kane

Kane has the double this week and a fixture in BGW30. Will watch this evening's game closely, but fancy Kane against both Man U and the Seagulls. Although being without Salah will be a nail biter for sure.

    Would you A or B?

You can look at xG and xGI for a start.

For example, in GW27, Kane/Son had four-game xGI comfortably exceeding 2x Weghorst, and they had Leeds as opponents, so even factoring in extra points for appearances there was a really good chance of them being the better captain choices. I posted about it at the time.

Unfortunately, despite swerving Weghorst for the captaincy I didn't go for Son/Kane either - thought that with Burnley's defensive form Pope might be a better shout... Pope still outscored Weghorst, but only by two points.

I’ve held on to constantly on the verge of a return Tomiyasu for so long now, even through his last DGW in which he played 0 minutes. I’ll almost certainly keep him for this one and 30 too, because hey. Got to hope.

See how Wolves do tomorrow first. They keep a CS and it ain't looking so bad.

If you were doing something like Saiss to VVD for GW29 then perhaps it would be worthwhile. But Saiss has a GW30 fixture, which makes him useful.

Spurs, so far, don't really do CS better than Wolves.

Think the brentford game in 30 is one of the best and they have plenty to rearrange, and cheap. What other defender would you bring in for 30?

Amartey's cheap and seems to be getting solid game time recently; tho' I think there are a few defenders out with injuries so who knows what happens when they start coming back...?

I doubt Alonso plays as he has symptomatic covid, so no. However if he does play then it's worth considering.

Its far from a strong BB, but if by playing it you free up funds to strengthen elsewhere then it could be worthwhile.

For example, I'm playing it GW29. I've 4 sure starters nd will get 5 games. I'm sure I could BB36 and probably get an extra game or two. But by playing it now I get to downgrade my 3rd forward to a 4.4, could also downgrade my 2nd GK to a 3.9. This gives me alot of money to boost my team elsewhere.

    Care to help?

I have no Salah, and only three doublers for this GW. So I have to either free hit into a great team, or wildcard.

What would you choose with the below team? It has six players for GW 30 as it stands, so with a hit or two I could get to 8-9

    Sa

    James - White - TAA - Digne - Livramento

    Son - JWP - Fernandes - Ramsey - Raphinha

    Broja - Ronaldo - Dennis

    1. CABAYE4
      • 14 Years

Fernandes and Ronaldo to Salah and Kane plus one more transfer to make it work on prices.

      1. FPL Emu
        • 15 Years
        3 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, considered it. But at that point I have taken a -8, and I still have only six doublers, and still only 8 players for GW 30.

At that point wildcarding into a good team with 8-9 doublers and 9-10 players for GW30 seems more viable, doesn't it?

Or free hitting in 11 doublers

        1. CABAYE4

WC certainly an option - all depends if you can use it better later on or not.

Don’t particularly like FH this GW as I think you want the players longer term.

    Foster | Ramsdale

    Mount | Ramsey | Salah | Saka | Son
    Broja | Dennis | Toney

Mount will go to a GW30 player before bringing a CHE mid back in 31. Then will use FH and WC somewhere in GWs 32-34.

Can't really see much I'd want to change tbh. Digne stands out if you dont mind losing 1 for 30, but not sure if its really worth it to get, say, a Spurs defender short-term. Maybe just Digne - James in 31? Could take a punt on Jota/Diaz (for Mount) this week but mins are uncertain, esp in light of Klopp quite yesterday. And maybe Maddison to take the spot in/from GW30?

Yer, Digne could be shifted, for sure - but as you say, unappealing replacements and happy to keep to get out as a player in 30. I'm reluctant to double up on Liv mids for the obvs. reasons. I'm currently thinking Mount --> Maddison for GW30 move and then Ramsey --> CHE mid in 31.

I would look to triple on Arsenal, maybe Lacazette for Dennis or Martinelli for Mount? This would also give you a extra player for 30. If you can afford maybe Mount & Dennis ---> Kulu & Laca?

Thought? An unusual situation approaches: a DGW followed by a BGW. Some players have a single match in the DGW followed by a BGW. Cancelo for example has one game in the next two GWs. Trading for a DGW and then SGW player (-4) should return the -4 back again meaning nil net cost.NB: Three games instead of one. PS: Nailed players only need apply. In addition one DGW player in GW29 can be your free transfer for GW30 meaning attaining close to a full team at no cost. Comments?

Makes sense if you are not FHing in 30. If you have WC for 31 (unlike me) you could really go to town on such moves if you dont mind losing some value tied up in Cancelo & co
