With many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers planning to Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 33, we’ve picked out some of the best budget options on offer in each category.

Not far off 20% of the site readers in our sidebar vote said they are planning to activate the Bench Boost chip this week, making it the second-most popular option behind Double Gameweek 36.

All stats from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

GOALKEEPERS AND DEFENDERS (sub-£5.0m)

Kasper Schmeichel (£4.8m) is an appealing goalkeeper for those activating their Bench Boost chip in Double Gameweek 33, with Leicester City scheduled to play twice against Newcastle United and Everton. Brendan Rodgers’ side aren’t exactly in stellar defensive form, but have kept a couple of clean sheets in their last six outings, conceding just five goals. Across the season, it’s also worth noting that Schmeichel ranks fourth for saves (103) and joint-fifth for bonus (10) among ‘keepers. Another appealing factor is that he is nailed, which given the Foxes’ European schedule, isn’t the case for budget defender picks like Wesley Fofana (£4.3m) and Daniel Amartey (£4.0m).

Martin Dubravka (£4.4m), meanwhile, is a solid alternative in goal, and injury permitting someone we can rely on for two starts in Gameweek 33. In his last 11 appearances, he has kept four clean sheets, averaging 4.1 points per match, while his +1.40 xG prevented figure only trails three other goalkeepers in that time. Following Friday’s clean sheet against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which notably saw Dubravka collect bonus, Newcastle United have now conceded only 13 goals in their last 13 outings, and five of those arrived in the heavy defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 31, highlighting the defensive improvements made under Howe. Fabian Schar (£4.4m), Dan Burn (£4.4m) and Matt Targett (£4.7m) are alternative cheap options at the back, with the former taking on a share of free-kicks of late.

Budget defender Ben White (£4.6m) is another appealing option at the back, despite Arsenal faltering in their last couple of games. Luckily for the Gunners, it’s Southampton up first in Gameweek 33 – and they seem like the perfect opposition for rediscovering form. White’s partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.4m) has gone from strength to strength in recent months, with the duo keeping their 13th clean sheet in 27 league starts together at Villa Park in Gameweek 30, both collecting bonus points in the process. White has proven to be one of the bargain FPL buys of the season, too: his total of 105 points is only beaten by Max Kilman (£4.6m) among the sub-£4.9m options in any position.

Diogo Dalot (£4.2m) feels a little risky with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.1m) lurking, so a better bet may be Charlie Taylor (£4.4m) or Tino Livramento (£4.3m), both of whom ‘double’ in Gameweek 33. Of the single Gameweek options, Emerson Royal (£4.5m) is worth considering in light of Matt Doherty’s (£4.9m) injury in Gameweek 32. The former Barcelona man bagged a goal in Gameweek 31 and has an appealing home match against goal-shy Brighton and Hove Albion in Saturday’s early kick-off.

MIDFIELDERS (sub-£6.0m)

Martinelli can provide value FPL route into Arsenal's appealing fixtures

Following damaging defeats against Crystal Palace and Brighton, cut-price midfielder Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m) probably isn’t at the top of many FPL managers shopping lists, but he does present an intriguing differential to the more popular (and expensive) Bukayo Saka (£6.8m), not least because his minutes-per-expected goals (xG) figure is better than all of the other Arsenal midfield regulars in 2021/22:

It has been a case of one step forward, one step back for Leicester this season, but they are now starting to get into their stride. Following Sunday’s 2-1 win against Crystal Palace, they have now lost just one of their last six Premier League matches, winning four. It is no coincidence that form has coincided with a number of Brendan Rodgers’ big-hitters returning, although Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£4.4m) has remained first-choice, and has now started the last 15 Premier League matches in a row. The 23-year-old bagged his first double-digit haul of the season in Gameweek 31, while only James Maddison (£6.9m) has created more chances amongst team-mates in the last six matches, which isn’t bad for just £4.4m.

Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m), meanwhile, is the pick of the Burnley attackers given the uncertainty around who starts up front in Gameweek 33, while Bruno Guimaraes (£4.9m) is a cheaper ‘doubler’ at Newcastle. The Brazilian’s stats aren’t anything to shout about – he has managed five shots in the box across his last six appearances – but he is one of the more advanced midfielders in Eddie Howe’s 4-3-3 formation.

Of the ‘single’ Gameweek options, you could do a lot worse than consider Christian Eriksen (£5.6m) – or cheaper still Bryan Mbeumo (£5.2m) – at Brentford. Since making his return against Newcastle in February, the former has scored three goals and registered one assist across seven appearances for club and country, while Mbeumo has racked up one goal and four assists in his last three outings. With a trip to Watford in Double Gameweek 33, plus an appealing run-in which sees the Bees finish up with Southampton, Everton and Leeds United, the duo might just be worth considering.

FORWARDS (sub-£6.0m)

The latest on Tierney as Mateta makes his case as the best budget FPL forward

This is where it gets tricky, with a real lack of appealing budget forwards on offer, especially those who play twice in Gameweek 33.

If you can stretch to an Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.8m) or Chris Wood (£6.7m) that is probably advisable, although that of course won’t be possible for everyone.

That leaves Armando Broja (£5.5m) as one of the better options, who will at least be fully-rested as he was ineligible to face his parent club Chelsea in Gameweek 32. A decent run to follow against Brighton, Crystal Palace and Brentford is also worth factoring in, for those eyeing up the Albanian international.

However, a ‘single’ Gameweek option might just be the best bet.

Jean-Philippe Mateta (£5.3m) is an intriguing budget differential, and despite not ‘doubling’ in Gameweek 33, faces Newcastle United, with appealing matches to follow against Leeds United, Southampton and Watford. The Frenchman produced his fourth goal of the campaign against Arsenal in Gameweek 31, with three of those strikes arriving in his last six appearances. In that time, he is averaging 5.2 points per start, with his tally of 12 shots in the box only one behind Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) among team-mates. Minutes remain a bit of a concern: he has started five of the last six but has passed the 70-minute mark on just two occasions. However, if he continues to deliver, it’s hard to see him being dropped anytime soon, and given Palace’s schedule, he stands out as one of the best budget forwards on offer in FPL right now.

Finally, an alternative to Matata could be Emmanuel Dennis (£5.9m), who may come back into Roy Hodgson’s starting XI if Cucho Hernandez (£5.1m) is ruled out through injury.

Afternoon. How are we all doing?

I've been trying to map out my strategy for the rest of the season. As I'd hoped, DGW36 is looking like a good bet for Bench Boost, so I'll do that.

My other remaining chip is my last Free Hit. I had considered 33 but, as I have 3 free transfers between now and then and the big hitters have some nice single fixtures, I wonder if I'd be better using FH in 37?

Asterisks denote DGW33 players. Would you?

    A) Use FTs for 33 and FH in 37
    B) FH 33 (and use 2FTs in 32 to plan for 34)

    2FT 2.0ITB
    Ramsdale* Dubravka*
    TAA Robbo Rudiger White* Doherty
    Salah Saka* Kulu Raphinha Ramsey
    Kane Weghorst* Broja*

    Thanks!

I will be bench boosting 33 and FH in 36/37. Can't see any good bench players from smaller teams in 36 or 37 as you'll load up on expensive player from the top team most likely

Cheers. I'm on 12 DGW36 players at the moment and have had a stab at a decent looking squad with 15, so I think BB36 is the way to go for me. Can definitely see the appeal of BB33 if you've got the right squad for it, though.

Would bench boost in 33 with that squad. Raphinha to a Leicester mid in 33, and Ramsey to KDH (Leicester) if you wsnt to keep price structure. 8 doubles with singles that have Nice to decent fixtures, and Dubravka only have this double left so you will need to change goalie if you want a double gw goalie for your bb. Bb in 36 with whom? Watford and Pukki?

Thanks. Definitely an option. Think I'll do Raph to Leicester mid in 33 whatever happens. For 36, money in the bank would allow me to move Dubravka, Weg and Broja to Schmeichel, Watkins and someone like Mateta or a Watford striker.

    Pope(whu/SOU)
    Schar(LEI/CRY)-Doherty(BHA)-Cancelo(BHA)
    Maddison(new/eve)-Saka(sou/che)-Salah(MHU)-Bruno(NOR/liv)-Barnes(new/eve)
    Broja(ARS/bur)-Kane(BHA)

I'm considering going without Salah and bring in a different player as a punt tbh, 50pts behind ML leaders. Also might consider ASM over Broja.

    Ramsdale Dubravka
    TAA AR Doherty White Kilman
    Salah Son Saka Raphinha Eriksen
    Kane Weghorst Broja

I would probably get rid of Kilman and Raphinha for two DGW-ers, potentially Justin and Maddison, to use bench boost in GW33.

I'm asking for your opinions whether it's worth it with 6 SGW players from Liverpool and Spurs + Eriksen vs Watford?

We have similar squads (yours is better with Son instead of Kulu) and I'm saving bench boost for 36. We're only a couple of transfers away from a full DGW36 squad.

BB33 could work too but I think 36 is better

Yeah, would be a shift to KDB & Son. Rough plan is Salah - Son this week, Sancho - KDB in 34. I wouldnt be captaining Salah for at least the next 2 GW anyway, and if I start to regret it I can still go back to Salah (+ Mahrez/Gundo) instead of of KDB in 34.

I like him a lot, positioning against Brentford caught my eye, it's just Leicester's schedule is a bit off-putting.

They play PSV away a week Thursday, Newcastle away Sunday, Everton away Wednesday, then Villa at home Saturday.

Cracking option if he does get those 2 x GW33 fixtures tho.

De Gea, Toney, Weghorst and Broja do not have doubles in 36. I’d look to move them out before 36. I’d be wary of getting Digne out as Villa assets will be precious due to their excellent fixtures from 34-36. I’d just maybe get James in as part of your GW37 FH.

Thanks, Digne has 1a in 1800+ Minutes, 3 negative scores! Rough plan was:

        32: Digne+Broja to James+Cucho
        33: FH
        34: Save
        35: Weghorst+De Gea to Watkins+Foster
        36: Son+Toney to Maddison+Vardy (13DGW+Cancelo)
        37: FH

seems like a very good plan. also like the Vardy punt. I’m not sure if cucho will get the game time. Watford even benched Dennis last game. There’s cucho, pedro, sarr, dennis and, less likely to play, kalu and king to fit in 3 positions. however, he is playing well atm so u never know. if ur budget could stretch to pukki that would be ideal but cucho is still a good option (and a bargain at 5.1m!)

Thanks. If Vardy is back fit he could be gold for 36 NOR/EVE, likely my cpt. Yeah, budget constraints mean there isn't really anyone else, I'd have roughly 5.6 for that fwd slot depending on price rises / falls. I can wait till 35 for the move though and just get Foster now, see how they lineup in the next few weeks.

            I guess it's Digne/Pukki or James/Cucho

I have a decision to make between him & Kulu. Currently leaning towards benching Broja.

    Is the below worth it?

    A. Robbo > Matip
    B. Tierney > Cancelo

    Thanks

Tough one. Maybe simpler to think about it as replacing Tierney with Matip, then whether you'd rather have Cancelo or Robbo for the run in..? I would probably side with Cancelo, just.

I see... Yeah, I'd prob go for that. Still prefer the balance of TAA + Cancelo over TAA + Robbo

Anyone else considering going Salah-less for the rest of the season?

I'm thinking of getting in KDB and using Jota for Liverpool's third spot for the rest of the season - I've got about 100 points to catch on the ML leader so thought I'd go with rogue captain choices (he doesn't have Son/KDB).

Personally, no. He may even become a semi-differential.

Top 4 premiums are Salah, Kane, KDB and Son. It's tough to pick only 3 and can see why some are going without.

I am currently doing that. Going well past 2 weeks at least with Son and Kane

Yes I'm looking at doing Salah > KDB & Ramsey > Jota but with no contingency funds I would need to do Salah > KDB now, or risk the price drop tonight. Its a potential season defining transfer, I'm currently leading in my ML by 3 points with 4 others right in the mix to win it.....it feels like a case of who blinks first!

I think if you are chasing a deficit like that then it makes sense but if its a small lead, or if leading a league then its a hard no.

Salah in a liverpool side chasing the title, i wouldn't want to back against him

      Thanks all, great feedback.

I'm probably going to do it after the games tonight, it's a huge lead I'm chasing and I don't really have much to lose, I'll finish 2nd if it goes wrong.

I am "only" 25 pts behind top 10k atm and with Salah, Son and Kane + without any major compromises to template elsewhere in my team (no Robbo though), I think the risk is bit too high for me.

Salah to Bruno would give me funds to get Jota (for Kulusevski) or Robbo (for Cash)... Bruno has also decent dgw and better fixture this week. But I think I would want Salah back come gw 34. The problem is that I don't trust MU at all atm. And whether it's Bruno or CR7 who hauls, I have no idea. Tempting, but risky. On his day Salah converts his small chances against any team.

BB this in 33 or wait till 36?

    Ramsdale / Dubravka

    TAA / Cancelo / White / Rudiger / Doherty

    Salah / Kulsevski / Saka / Raphinha / Coutinho

    Kane / Broja / Wood

If 33, Coutinho, Raphinha & rudiger would move on for maddison, sancho & fofana for free over the next 2 weeks

Would potentially hold the FH until 37 too as a point of difference, but thats to be figured out later!

Could be an option but øde played there last time Partey was out. And with Øde there Arteta can field both Esr and Martinelli which is why i think he prefers that option.

    1FT, 1.8 ITB -

    Pope - Bachmann
    TAA - Cancelo - Coady - White - Livramento
Salah - Saka - Raphinha - Kulusevski - Douglas Luiz
    Kane - Antonio - Toney

What is the best strategy do you think, I have WC, FH & BB left

Also, what transfer would you make this week? Salah out? Antonio out? Something else?
