Eden Hazard and Marko Marin both notch on their Chelsea debuts as the Blues taste victory in Seattle, while Gylfi Sigurdsson takes just 10 minutes to find the net in his Tottenham bow. Federico Macheda scores the only goal of the game as United squeeze past South African side AmaZulu, Billy Sharp grabs three for Southampton, Marcello Trotta bags a brace for Fulham and Nathan Delfouneso ensures Villa win again:

Seattle Sounders 2 Chelsea 4
Chelsea’s two debutants both notched on their debuts as Roberto Di Matteo’s side started their pre-season on a winning note. Romelu Lukaku is the only available striker in the Blues travelling squad at the moment and bagged a brace in the 4-2 win, with this performance perhaps suggesting he should be confident of a place in the first-team squad next term, despire rumours of a loan deal. Marko Marin and Eden Hazard both impressed with a goal apiece, with the former also providing an assist for Lukaku’s second. Josh McEachran produced a pair of assists for the visitors but was also at fault for the hosts’ opener before making way at half time. Di Matteo made plenty of changes after the break, with the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, Ramires and new boy Kevin De Bruyne all featuring but, despite the introduction of fresh legs, there were no more goals in the second 45 from the away side.

Chelsea First Half: Hilario; Chalobah, Ivanovic, David Luiz, Ferreira; Mikel, McEachran; Benayoun, Hazard, Marin; Lukaku.
Chelsea Second Half: Blackman; Hutchinson, Ivanovic (Kane 63), Cahill, Ferreira (Saville 63); Essien, Lampard (c); Ramires, Hazard (Kakuta 63), De Bruyne, Lukaku (Piazon 63).

AmaZulu 0 Man United 1
Sir Alex Ferguson started with a front three for the first match of United’s pre-season, with Federico Macheda and Javier Hernandez on either side of Dimitar Berbatov. The likes of Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick added a wealth of experience to a team which included many youngsters making their senior bow for the Old Trafford side. Berbatov was superb throughout, pulling the strings from the central position, and aside from teeing up the game’s only goal for Macheda, was unlucky not to find the net himself on a couple of occasions. Anders Lindegaard was called into action a number of times and was equal to the task, helping the visitors retain their clean sheet, while Shinji Kagawa was afforded a mere two minutes as a substitute towards the end as United comfortably saw out the match.

United Starting XI: Lindegaard; Veseli (Vermijl 46), Wootton, Ferdinand, Brady (Blackett 58); Carrick, Scholes (Tunnicliffe 70), Lingard (Petrucci 70); Hernandez (Kagawa 89), Berbatov, Macheda (Anderson 58).

Stevenage 0 Spurs 2
Andre Villas-Boas rolled out a 4-2-3-1 for his first game in charge at Spurs as the London outfit chalked up a 2-0 win. Youngster Harry Kane led the line, with David Bentley in “the hole” behind and Steven Pienaar and Aaron Lennon on the flanks. At the back, Kyle Naughton was fielded at left-back as Benoit Assou-Ekotto is still recovering from a shoulder operation and Danny Rose is with the Great Britain Olympic squad. Spurs offered little in the first 45 but Villas-Boas made seven half-time alterations, with new boys Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen both handed their debuts; the former needed just 10 minutes to open his Spurs account, with Andros Towsend the creator. Both players could have picked up assists after teeing up Souleymane Coulibaly with chances but the youngster spurned his opportunities to put Spurs further ahead. Right-back Adam Smith set up the second, feeding Iago Falque to put the match beyond the hosts side’s reach late on.

The Spurs boss revealed post-match that his tactics and formation were mainly based on what the current squad are used to – with changes to personnel and team shape expected, Villas-Boas went on to explain:

It’s nothing uncommon with what Tottenham have done in the recent past, playing with the No10 behind the striker…I think it’s what the players at the moment feel the most comfortable with. Of course changes will come when we need them. Eventually we will go to the market when we think it is appropriate. There will not be a lot of changes, but steadily we will bring in players.

Tottenham Starting XI: Cudicini (Friedel 46), Walker (Smith 61), Kaboul (Gallas 46), Dawson (Vertonghen 46), Naughton (Bassong 46), Livermore (Carroll 46), Jenas (Huddlestone 61), Bentley (Townsend 46), Lennon (Falque 61), Pienaar (Sigurdsson 46), Kane (Coulibaly 61)

Étoile Carouge 1 Southampton 4
Nigel Adkins fielded a 4-3-2-1 formation as Saints came from behind to record a comfortable win in Switzerland last night. The Southampton boss started with three of last season’s first-choice back-four, with Danny Butterworth also selected at right-back, while Rickie Lambert was flanked by Guly and Jason Puncheon up front. Guly caught the eye with a strong performance, while Adam Lallana went close on a couple of occasions but, despite their dominance, the visitors went behind courtesy of a Jos Hooiveld own goal. Adkins made nine changes at the break as his side stepped up a gear; Calum Chambers was handed a role in central midfield and provided a pair of assists, while Billy Sharp ran riot and bagged a hat-trick, with fellow-sub Luke Shaw also getting amongst the goals.

Southampton Starting XI: Davis (Forecast 46); Butterfield (Richardson 46), Fonte (Stephens 46), Hooiveld (Seaborne 46), Fox (Harding 46); Schneiderlin (Hammond 46), Ward-Prowse, Lallana (Chambers 46); Puncheon (Chaplow 67), Guly (Shaw 46); Lambert (Sharp 46).

Lokomitive Leipzig 0 Fulham 4
Marcello Trotta was the stand-out performer as Fulham strolled to victory in Germany. Handed a starting role up front, the young Italian notched twice in the first 45 before making way after the break as Martin Jol made nine changes. New boy Sascha Riether impressed at right-back, while Mladen Petric opened his Cottagers account after some fine work by Kerim Frei. With Jol rolling out many of his more experienced campaigner in the second half, Fulham were in complete control and Lauri Della Valle turned in the fourth after a knock down by Mahamadou Diarra.

Fulham, First Half: Stockdale; Riether, Hughes (c), Halliche, Riise; Etuhu, Gecov, Sidwell; Mesca, Trotta, Kacaniklic.

Second Half: Schwarzer; Riether (Brister 70), Baird, Hangeland, Briggs; Davies, Dembele, Diarra, Kacaniklic (Della Valle 70), Petric, Frei

Philadelphia Union 0 Aston Villa 1
Paul Lambert saw his new side racked up their second straight win thanks to Nathan Delfouneso. Starting alongside Darren Bent up front, Delfouneso was a constant menace to the home side and fired most of his side’s efforts as Villa took control in the first half. Ciaran Clark was another who received particular praise from the Villa official website for his display alongside James Collins in the heart of the back-four before making way for Richard Dunne last on. Lambert fielded 21 players last night, with keeper Brad Guzan the only player to manage the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 win.

Villa Starting XI: Guzan, Lowton (Lichaj, 60), Collins (Dunne, 66), Clark (Baker, 66), Warnock (Stephens, 60), El Ahmadi (Herd, 56), Holman (Gardner, 60), Bannan (Delph, 56), Ireland (N’Zogbia 46) Delfouneso (Weimann, 52), Bent (Agbonlahor, 52).

REPOST: My uber-rotation spreadsheet is here:

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32207769/rotations.xls

To recap, I wrote a program to analyse 5-team rotations for clean sheets. The program looked at all 15,504 combinations of 5 teams and for each combination, looked for the best 3 fixtures for each gameweek (best being best chance of clean sheets). There are some notes about it on the first page. Please read them.

It’s pretty vast and is only partially digested data. There’s a lot to trawl through but you might find it a useful starting point.

As mentioned in the notes, I am very open to re-running the analysis with different attack/defence rankings. I’m also open to ideas of how to digest the data further.

I am gonna analyse the defences in terms of their home/away clean sheet ratios etc, so shall pass it on when I have done it, and you can do with it what you will.

Not really from a fantasy perspective but seeing Smith, Coulibaly and Townsend all feature pleases me.
Townsend is rumoured to be heading to a PL club on loan. Also talks Danny Rose may head to WBA - would be a decent attacking option at 4.5 if it does come about.

Exactly my plan but not taking the hits. Me taking in Rooney by GW3 for the Southampton game. Been trying to squeeze Rooney in for GW1 but I guess there's always a sacrifice to make.

You see we didn't become the world's best by signing big star players. Take Berba and Tevez, we splashed a lot of cash on them and didn't get the output we would have liked. It's our young players that become stars themselves and I would like that tradition to continue. Anything wrong with that WR?

I disagree here, times are changing. City are the top team in England and they've done it with big signings. A mixture of youth and expensive players is the way to go IMO. The reason we are not the "worlds best" is because of a lack of world class players.

We do have experienced players. Vidic, Ferdinand, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney, the wingers etc to fill out the experienced part. But if we fill all of our team with expensive players and big names, the youngsters won't get a chance and this is not what we are known for.

A few of those guys you've mentioned will be gone soon. You're still avoiding the fact that we don't have enough world class players. And I said a mixture of expensive and youth. I don't think our academy will ever produce Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Neville's, Butt again.

I'd rather we were known for playing good attractive football and winning loads of Prem/UCL titles.

Youve just got to have Siggy and Hazard haven't you? Thinking like this:

Begovic Sorenson (keepers done for 9.0m, the pair combined would have had 134 points last year not too shabby for 4.5m)

    Verm/Kompany Vertonghan Tomkins Hooivled Fabio

    Hazard Siggy Nolan/Noble xxxxx xxxxx

    Rooney Aguero xxxxx

Covers Chelsea, Spurs, City and Utd attacks nicely. Would miss Tony V though.

I reckon the choice of which spud to go with is a real toughie - 4 genuine candidates, all priced 9-9.5m. I think Bale and Ade would see the most game time, and with Ade the likely sole striker and on pens, he just edges it for me.

I'd rather Aguero over Tevez, but if they both start I'm not sure he's worth 2.5m more...

Woah, Hazard and Lampard? I thought we'd be better off with a midfielder and a forward rather than a pair of midfielder, but you should be alright anyway. Not sure about Britton but worth a punt. Rooney, Tevez and Adebayor. I like that.

Yeah, I think I'm definitely Hazard and one of Ivanovic/Terry. 3rd slot is either Lamps (on pens, fairly nailed on to start I think, and perhaps will play more advanced in the first week if Mata is rested after the Olympics) or Torres.

Torres is tempting. I've just been burnt before....

I reckon Torres will assist at most for the double. City first game is Southampton at home so having a Tevez/Aguero is close to a must. Thing is, games like these where we expect a thrashing sometimes turns out against our favour. Like United vs Wigan... vs Blackburn... Arsenal vs QPR... and so on... and it could be 0-0 or only a 1-0. But the logic is there with Aguero/Tevez against Southampton.

I can't see anything other than a Man City drubbing of Southampton. Would be one of the upsets of the season if Southampton get anything from that game.

There isnt really a standard team with the new signings and different strategies for the dgw making teams surprisingly different. Saying that, I am seeing Noble, Torres, DDG, Cole/Ivan, Bale, Maloney in a lot of teams.

Not interested in Torres? How about Torres instead of Rooney and Siggy/Bale/VDV instead of Lampard from the off.

then all you have to do is Torres to Rooney gwk2 and you already have a spurs mid in place.

Rooney away to Everton is not going to get you much.

I always think that the main striker for top teams is always worth having, especially if a double. I know its Torres, but this year he is their main man up top and with that little lot behind him even I could score.

Yeah, that's the other route - problem is, who will start out of VDV and Siggy? Or both? Also, not sure I'd want 2 spuds for GW1 (new)

The way round that is start with Bale and wait and see re Siggy and VDV.

My gwk 1 big hitters are likely to be

          Torres - Aguero

          Hazard - Bale

          Cole

then Torres to Rooney gameweek 2. I'm.just going for tried and tested favourites. My risks ,Torres and Hazard, have doubles which lessens the risk markedly.

Told myself that before, sold him, and in the end he scored a brace. Of course, that was home but still against Everton.

      Thoughts on a few players...
      1) Charles N'Zogbia. For those not punting on Bent surely a good shout? Great fixtures, attacking manager, talented team, whats not to love? Last season was a big Alex Mcleish sized blip.
      2) Nathan Dyer - for people who have Sinclair, why not go for Dyer? Very similar ppg last season even tho Sinclair was on penalties. For 1.5 cheaper its a no brainer altho Michu might provide a better option if he is preferred to De Guzman in the hole.
      3) Yaya Toure - why do people have him? Plays deep often, and is well known for his spectacular 3 pointers. Sure he can get 10+ maybe thrice a season but wouldnt a cheaper option with just as good fixtures and likelihood to get a big haul be a better option? eg. McClean, Pienaar, Nolan. Also Sess at the same price looks a better option too (altho i would have mcclean due to the price diff)

Morning all - another write up on the Villa which may be of interest to some. Stephen Warnock assisted the fonz for their only goal last night which caught me eye. Under MON Warnock was a very effective left back, and I remember reaping the rewards of a number of Warnock assists in the FPL a few seasons back. Early days I know, and he was dreadful last season under McCleish, but he may be worthy of a place in your watchlists in pre-season.

not put a team together yet as cant be bothered until the sites up and running, my thoughts so far though:

    1) maloney/noble are worth going for as cheap rotating midfielders, not perfect rotation early on but is after gwk6, but gwk3 they both have nice home fixtures means you can potentially bench a chelsea attacker

    2) rooney and aguero are must-haves, proven scorers, nailed-on and gives you a captain choice each week when theyre at home

    3) bale is a must-have, see him benefitting from AVB's formation

    4) federici/DDG looks the best keeper combo, federici to play gwks 1 and 9 when utd have everton and chelsea away

    any thoughts?

      1) Agreed. Both in my team at present. 5.0m penalty takers with decent fixtures. Yes pls.

      2) Probably right, unless Tevez does indeed cement a starting role, in which case he has an argument for MCY attacking cover given the 2.5m saving.

      3) Not sure he's a must have. He will do very well though. I'm tempted.

      4) Yeah, they're good.

Agree with most of the above but am looking at Friedel / Federici myself as I'm a bit wary of Lindegaard and Friedel seems a good way into Spurs defence. Also allows an extra £0.5m which gives me funds to go Cole/Ivanovic --> Vidic after GW1.

Bale could be great but will be monitoring his injury situation closely.

Aguero is not in my team - City strikers are very rotatable. Im punting on tevez - extreme value and just as likely to be nailed on as Aguero imo. Agree about Noble/Maloney and Bale. Keepers have so many possibilities - DDG/Fed gives u terrible fixtures gw5-8 though.
