Our series on the newly-promoted Premier League sides continues with this look at Nottingham Forest’s head coach, Steve Cooper.

We assess his background, tactical approach, tendency to rotate and openness with the press ahead of Forest’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) debut, as well as looking at areas of his squad he might strengthen in.

An article on the Championship play-off winners’ defence and attack will follow.

To help us with our research, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout’s founding father and Forest supporter, Mark Sutherns, to provide a fan’s view.

Everything you need to know about fellow new boys Fulham and Bournemouth can be found here.

WHAT IS COOPER’S BACKGROUND?

After a fairly unremarkable playing career in Welsh football, Steve Cooper stepped into coaching at academy level, first with Wrexham and then with Liverpool, a period which saw him develop such young talents as Raheem Sterling and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He then moved to the England set-up, guiding the under-17s side to World Cup success in 2017, with his team widely praised for their attractive, attacking style of play.

“It’s about playing our way… we want to play with purpose, dominate possession, play forward and get the ball back as quick as we can. That’s always our plan.” – Steve Cooper discussing his team’s approach whilst England Under-17s manager

Having achieved international success with the Three Lions, Cooper took his first step into senior football management with Swansea City in June 2019. During his two seasons in charge, he led the Swans to back-to-back play-off qualifications, but suffered defeat on both occasions and departed after losing to Brentford in the 2020/21 final.

Cooper’s next job was at the City Ground in September 2021, where Nottingham Forest were rock bottom of the Championship upon his arrival. The side he inherited from Chris Hughton had lost six of their first seven games, but he instantly transformed their fortunes, guiding them to Premier League promotion at the first time of asking via the play-offs.

In his 46 games in charge at Forest, Cooper has won 27, drawn 11 and lost just eight.

WHAT TACTICS DO FOREST PLAY UNDER COOPER?

Above: Nottingham Forest’s starting XI vs Huddersfield Town in the play-off final

Steve Cooper has mainly used a 3-4-1-2 formation at Forest, a system he settled on during an excellent second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

A back three of Joe Worrall, Steve Cook and Scott McKenna formed a tight defence, with Djed Spence deployed as an advanced wing-back on the right. The youngster was not only allowed over the halfway line but actively encouraged to bomb down the wing.

Above: Djed Spence’s 2021/22 season heatmap, via SofaScore

However, with Spence not expected to return to the City Ground next season, it will be interesting to see who will play this role in the Premier League, as it does carry potential in the current set-up.

Central midfielders James Garner and Ryan Yates were largely box-to-box, with Philip Zinckernagel at his best in a number 10 role behind forwards Keinan Davis and Brennan Johnson.

Having previously been deployed in a wider role, the speedy Johnson thrived in a front-two alongside Davis and was the outstanding young player in the Championship last season.

Matters are further complicated, however, given that three of those aforementioned players – Garner, Zinckernagel and Davis – were also on loan and have since returned to their parent clubs.

Cooper can be flexible but already has a preferred system tailor-made for the Premier League. He’ll unquestionably go with a 3-5-2 with the wing-backs pushing up very high in home matches, while sitting deeper in away matches. I imagine we’ll sign a defensive midfielder – perhaps Ainsley Maitland-Niles – to partner Yates in central midfield and unlike Garner last season, they will likely remain more disciplined, with Yates the most likely to raid the box late when in possession.

Cooper has shown willingness to switch formation according to opponent and the match situation and will revert to a straight back four if he feels the midfield is being overrun. However, he’ll need the personnel to do that so much depends on the squad size as to the level of flexibility available to the manager. Yates can be used as part of a back three, so we might see McKenna sacrificed in some games to chase a result, with Yates an option to drop back should he seek to revert back later in matches.

Don’t be fooled by the front two either, as the forwards will often drop into wide areas between the full-back and centre-backs to open up gaps for a raiding number 10. This is why I personally find Johnson’s classification as a forward as a little unkind given that he not only shows propensity to naturally take up a wide role, he’ll also often be instructed to take up this position, even in a front two.” – Mark Sutherns

WHAT STYLE OF FOOTBALL DOES COOPER FAVOUR?

“Our ambition is to play a certain style of football. It is not easy because I am asking for us to play a brave, positional game which is about trying to be creative and exciting. Those are things that are hard things to do in the game. Sometimes we get it right, other times we don’t. That’s football.” – Steve Cooper

Forest are likely to be a counter-attacking side next season, which is where they were at their best in 2021/22, with plenty of fast transitions.

In the Championship, they looked to dominate the ball and score goals, but were equally comfortable mixing it up. For example, at Swansea in April, they had just 30% possession but still ran out 5-1 winners.

They aren’t necessarily a pressing side but do look to win the ball back high up the pitch when there is an opportunity.

Can their current style translate to the top-flight? Some alterations, of course, will need to occur, but their approach last season should stand them in good stead, as evidenced by their FA Cup run:

“Forest are not a defensive team, they just defend well and, when they win possession and attack they are often quick and decisive. Cooper will likely create his tactics around those qualities, conceding possession to the majority of opponents and relying on organisation and Henderson’s shot stopping to keep Forest in games, while looking to the front two to provide a clinical cutting edge when the ball is turned over. So don’t expect high possession or even a high press, instead watch for Forest adopting an organised shape and then springing quickly, moving the ball without hesitation from back to front. The two wide centre-backs are often key to progression, they will be charged with driving into midfield, attracting defensive cover to spring the two wing-backs who, in turn, will look to slot in the front two with their pace in behind. Awoniyi – in the Keinan Davis role – will be expected to hold the ball up and bring others into the game, particularly the number 10 who will be charged on joining the attack at all times.” – Mark Sutherns

DOES COOPER LIKE A SETTLED SIDE OR WILL HE ROTATE?

    Most seem insistent on Cancelo

Here I agree with you. Bruno on pens and without Ronaldo is basically a must have on his current price. However, not having Haaland or Salah is scary scenario.

I do have Haaland, at least. Salah is scary, 100%. Just have to hope Nunez bedding in, and Diaz’s lack of end product remains initially.

I'm not totally convinced on Bruno, what sort of role is he going to have now under ETH? He's a player thar thrives in transition, making long runs with the ball and playing risky passes and taking shots from distance. Where he excels is in a style that is almost the antithesis of that of ETH who wants a possession-based team. He does like his teams to attack in numbers which should help but apart from that I think he's going to have to adapt his game a lot.

      1. Athletic Nasherbo
        • 8 Years

Yeah it’s a question mark, but Bruno (particularly if Ronaldo leaves) has so many routes to points. Ten Hag knows Bruno is key, as he mentioned how well the team did a few years ago.

How would you rate this team 1-10?

    Sanchez - 4.0
    TAA - VVD - Cash - Cancelo - Jansson

    Son - Salah - Neto - Wissa - Colback

    Haaland - 4.5 - 4.5

How do you rate an 11 or even 15 man team out of ten? Even if someone says 7, or 9, how do you decide where their votes go?

Why can’t you rate a team of 11/15 players out of ten?

He’s not asking to rate every player individually and calculate an average.

Lots of reviews rate products out of ten. Ever read a movie review? Often give ratings out of 5 or 10.

        Strange comment.

Strange? Your reply is stranger. Movies are not marked out of 11 or 15 categories. It’s purely a subjective opinion on the thing as a whole.

Exactly. He’s not asking you to rate his team in individual categories.

He’s asking for a ‘subjective opinion as a whole.’

It’s quite a common thing for people to ask for feedback on this site, but you felt the need to be a pedant and moan about it.

Obviously assumes 4.5 fwd is a thing but putting that to one side I think it highlights the problem with 3 premium attack, I think you’ve probably done well with the rest of the budget but it still looks too weak elsewhere.

There are so many potentially viable options at 6-8m in midfield think I think it’s a mistake to have no spots at all for them, at the very least I’d be downgrading VVD to upgrade one of the cheap midfielders.

Relying on Jansson, Wissa, Colback and Neto every week really doesn't sound good to me. Even Wissa, who I do like, is a risk with Eriksen not returning to Brentford, the difference between their form pre and post-Eriksen was stark

In the nicest way I look at that and wonder where the money's gone. There have been a few triple/quad premium teams posted that looked stronger.

The midfield and forwards make me wince. I'm not sure I'd want to be relying on Wissa & Colback.

If they are getting stuck at the update personal details page on the website it's because of a problem with the website - the password page has already been taken care of.

The solution I was given and have passed onto others is to instead download the latest FPL app and use that avenue and you should be able to get past the update personal details page.

unless there are no 4.5 forwards, I'll be going 451; those first 3 I can see Vardy matching Haaland - if you conclude Haaland and Nunez are not in the best 3 City/Liverpool picks then it's basically Vardy vs Kane unless I'm missing someone (Wilson maybe?)

A low ID is a mark of esteem. It proves beyond any reasonable doubt that you are not an irritating casual and that you are probably a very shrewd fantasy football manager to boot. It also fills you with profound optimism that the season ahead will be fortuitous and this is highly conducive to getting off to a good start which as we all know is imperative. Personally, if I don't get a three figure ID I will be overcome with despondency and despair and will probably delete my team immediately. 😀

Updated draft-any thoughts welcome. Taken some cash out of back 5 to get 2 midfielders at 8 m- Saka over Martinelli and Mount ( who could be LDias/ Kulusevski)

    Ederson
    TAA Laporte Gabriel Chilwell Cash
    Salah Saka Mount Neto
    Haaland

"Taken some cash out of back 5"

Futile attempt at a terrible level of humour.

I like the team though, 5/6 of these end up the template for sure and I think I'll end up with a couple of the ~8m mids to allow chopping and changing between them.

I kind of like that. Thinking Laporte over Cancelo to save some money also myself. I am planning Diaz over Saka and Martinelli over Neto. That means Gabriel to Tomiyasu and/or cheaper gk.

Think there’s plenty to merit here and nice print points covered.

I’d be downgrading Ederson personally - partly to free up budget but mainly so you have locked up that 3rd city spot if a value midfielder emerges

5 substitutions means teams can now change 50% of their starting 10 outfield players.

I don't even really know the rule, I know it's 5 players - but is it 3 sets of subs? or 3 sets of subs and 1 half-time set (4 total possible); if so, half-time substitutions could be bad; if it's just 3 sets then most will still make it until 60 you'd think

I feel like this 5 subs thing is being over egged I doubt we will even notice it. We will get less 90 minute players but I imagine it will be like Europe where players come off in the final 10 minutes or really late in games to waste time.

I don't think so. FPL is a game of probabilities, like poker; and is therefor no more a lottery than poker is. Expected minutes is just another factor that the shrewdest fantasy managers will pay attention to. How big a factor it is remains to be seen, but I don't expect it to be much

Gabriel at 5m is great too.

Unpopular opinion but I can't see Everton being as bad as last season and Myko has an engine, good value if Lampard sticks with wing backs.

Leicester have no Europe and I'm a fan of picking up players from teams push for but are without European football. Those additional rest/prep days tend to really count.

    How does it look?

    Sanchez
    TAA - James - Dias - Tomiyasu
    Salah - Saka - Diaz - Foden - Neto
    Haaland

    4m - Jonny - 4.5m forward - 4.5m forward

    Why I like this setup?

    - Easy access to all the 8m mods like Maddison, Raphinha (?), Kulusevski, Bowen etc ( I think this is where ground would be made up this season)
    - Easy access to the plethora of 4.5m defs
    - Triple City, Triple Pool, Double Arsenal
    - Only 2 moves to get a striker by downgrading one 8m mid to 5-5.5m mid
    - All the likely highly owned big hitters in place
    - Son plan if he goes crazy, Dias > 4m, 8m mid > Son , 8m mid > 6m mid ( in for -8)

This setup with the price points tick most of the boxes and should have enough insurance against rank kills and just enough for the rank gains.

    Thoughts? 🙂

Looking at potentially a 442 with Haaland and Vardy up front, but no Salah.
Plenty of options in Midfield at around 8.0 million.

What's the team? Let us see if we can find the 0.5 there.

        Mendy
        TAA/Robbo/Cancelo/Chilwell/Tomiyasu
        Diaz/Son/Odegaard/Martinelli/ASM
        Haaland/4.5/4.5

Tbh, it's a moot point if we don't have any 4.5 FWDs!
I could lose £0.5m off of Mendy - but his value is sooo good.
And my plan is to rotate Tomi/ASM (or just have one bench option to cover for rotation/injury), but, I could always downgrade ASM to a £6.0 - Neto for example. But I quite fancy a bit of ASM fun.

Where would you trim the fat?

Well, personally, I'd ditch ASM — but I reckon you'd like to party.

          Here's a few options:
          Downgrade Mendy;
          Robbo to VVD;
          Chilwell to Cash;

          and my favourite option:
          Odegaard to Martinelli.

I'm pretty set on my back 5 (and I already have both Odegaard and Martinelli), so think the only viable option is either downgrading ASM or Mendy.

            Thanks.

Or ignore all I've read on Bruno G - and his ridiculous purple patch - and just pretend that he's as good as ASM

Would probably do Odegaard to Neto (or Rice if you prefer). You have Arsenal coverage in Tomiyasu and Martinelli anyway

That would put you £0.5m in credit

I'm quite excited about Odegaard though - there was some under the radar stat about chances created and xGI (not my standard wheelhouse).
Happy to double/treble up on Arsenal for their early run.

Neto is defo on the watchlist though - far better value than Rice.
Thing is, there's not a lot in midfield below the £6.5m mark is there?
Aside from Martinelli who I think is head and shoulders above the rest!

Very sympathetic to all points. Maybe Robbo to Dias for the same net result as my last suggestion?

There are just too many fantastic defensive options aren't there!
How are we supposed to choose just 5?

The Mendy being value thing is a bit of myth. Out of the regular first choice keepers he ranked 8th for points per match last season - and current signs are Chelsea could have a weaker defence this season

Yeah, I've been musing on that.
If I ditch my 'rotating 5th MID' from ASM>Neto (as has been suggested above), I was actually considering using that £0.5m to move Mendy>Ederson and then just put it to bed.

See I also don’t like Ederson as you would then have a triple up and be locked out of any value city midfielders that emerge. If you wanted an extra 0.5 why not just downgrade Mendy?

Because Raya/Sanchez is so dullard isn't it!
But you're right - if you look at points per million for GKs last season, Sanchez was 4th. And Raya was 5th for ppg (of GKs that played 5 or more games)

Certainly different... I don't quite get the Odegaard/Martinelli hype. They're good players for sure, but are they at all nailed/do they have enough output to justify not being nailed?

Jesus and Saka are immovable in the first team but then you've got quite a few players for the other attacking spots. Could be wrong of course but feels a bit risky.

Saka was great for me last season.
            Fantastic value.
And I agree - Jesus could be amazing.

Essentially it comes down to (in that mini cluster)
            A) Son/Odegaard/Martinelli
            B) Kulu/Saka/Jesus

            I like both.
(B only allows a £5.5m on the bench - so would be Neto)

I'd lose ASM, but in similar drafts, I've converted Robbo to VVD and Cancelo to Laporte.

It’s going to be him or Mendy.
I think the compromises in those defender options are too much (for me)

I quite like the idea of having ASM to hit Newcastle’s first couple of prime fixtures - then assess if it’s worthwhile.

I usually like to have at least one (sometimes two) punts in my team to allow a little ‘fun’ and have that differential factor.
ASM has great potential - especially with Newcastle likely to be much improved this season.

      Bruno based on CR7 leaving?
Could be back to his best again.

I'm not confident on Mitro - this that could be better used in midfield, but appreciate that changes the squad balance.

      Gabriel 4.2 in 35
      Tomiyasu 3.6 in 21
      White 3.6 in 32

some fantastic mid priced forward options again … no need at all to go down the route of non playing forwards with lower player prices generally in the game this year
