Ah, pre-season hype. Of course, a 4-0 drubbing of Liverpool’s reserve squad and a 4-1 victory over Melbourne Victory has got me excited over Manchester United players, who I vowed to avoid just a week ago.

The thing is, with “big at the back”, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Pedro Neto (£5.5m) featuring in almost every draft I see, I am looking for ways in which I can differentiate my squad a little bit.

I always like to have at least 2-3 players who I can get a bit excited about when I watch them play (usually before the crippling disappointment sets in). My first draft video for Fantasy Football Scout over on YouTube for example had me talking up the prospects of Chelsea-bound Raheem Sterling (£10.0m). I’m still very much sold on the new Blues recruit, but of course, when you see what taking out a premium-priced player for the rest of your squad can do, there is temptation.

So, I’ve traded Sterling out for Luis Diaz (£8.0m), who watchers of my “Who is the best £8.0m midfielder” video will know I rated as my top pick in his price bracket. A popular choice on the FFS boards, I’m backing him to have a stellar campaign after his immediate impact when signing for Liverpool in January.

MAN UTD PLAYERS

Using this money, I’ve then been able to upgrade one of my heroes of last season, Bruno Guimarães (£6.0m), who sits in a whopping 20% of all teams at the time of writing. In comes Jadon Sancho (£7.5m). Now I know full well this is off the back of some, quite frankly, meaningless pre-season friendlies. However, when I initially saw his price tag of just £7.5m (a huge £2.0m down from £9.5m last season) my curiosity was piqued. To have any chance of success in the Premier League next season, Erik ten Haag will need to get the absolute best out of Sancho, who managed 38 goals and 51 assists in his time at Borussia Dortmund but struggled in his maiden season in England.

A big factor in my decision as to whether or not to start with Sancho will likely depend on what happens with talismanic figure Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m). Rumours continue to swirl that he isn’t happy at the club, but in truth, it is my belief that his presence in the team negatively impacts the assets around him. If we see Ronaldo depart the club, might we see Anthony Martial (£7.0m) or even Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) lead the line for the Red Devils? If this happens, ten Haag’s new “press high, play aggressively” approach would likely see United’s cut-price attackers back on the radar. However, if Ronaldo sticks around and the team remains glued to feeding the 37-year-old, I fear their assets may be dead weights once again.

I want to see a bright, bold and attacking United side. While Ronaldo’s goals were crucial for Manchester United finishing semi-respectably, my sense is that his general presence in the team hindered those around him. A perfect example of this was the 3-0 win against Spurs last season, in which he scored all three goals. However, United’s general play was really poor, and they simply relied on moments of brilliance from the Portuguese superstar. Looking at Ronaldo’s defensive contributions for example, over the season, he made just two interceptions across all matches (equal with Edinson Cavani who played just 162 minutes). In terms of tackles, Ronaldo’s total of 12 paled to the likes of Diogo Jota (£9.0m; 81), Ivan Toney (£7.0m; 59) and even the likes of Neal Maupay (£6.5m; 31). In fairness to Ronaldo, Spurs forward Harry Kane (£11.5m) didn’t show massive difference in his stats, with just three interceptions and 26 tackles. However, Kane created nearly double the number of chances (49) compared to Ronaldo (26), highlighting the impact he has on the players around him. No player had a better mins/shot than Ronaldo last season (22.3), but it’s likely these will be shared more around the team if he was to drop out, with Sancho (hopefully) reaping the rewards.

I'm on 2 for whatever that's worth. Robbo is one of the best values in the game year in and year out, and given LIV fixtures to start the season it's a no-brainer for me

Having a little play around with a Salahless team and I have to say its interesting.

    Raya, 4.0
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Tripper, (Cash)
    Dias, Mount, Foden, Saka (Andreas)
    Haaland, Jesus (Greenwood)

    0.5 ITB

any 8.0 that suits.....but you get the idea

Solid bench, relatively strong across the board.
Defenders are basically Mids and Mids are basically attackers, most on set pieces.

And I you consider that Haaland is world class striker for the team that scores the most goals in the league most seasons, he could be a set and forget captain. plenty of 3,4,5 plus goals in a game for the team.

      Nice team.
I think having as many 8.0 mids as possible will become more popular before the season kicks off.
      I have a draft below with Salah and 3 * 8 mids not 4
And I just don’t have Haaland and you don’t have Salah.

Very good overall, captaincy is the only issue, but like you said, Haaland could be a perma cap.

Rasmus Kristensen, give the hard man a chance lads.

    > 7 goals 3 assists in 29 league games for RB Salzburg in 21/22
    > Averages 1.5(0.61) shots(on target) per 90,
    > Already playing well in pre-season, popping up in advanced positions and tenacious in his tackle as well. A huge upgrade on Ayling.
    >Only face 2 top6 teams in the first 8, and he rotates well with 4m NFO wingback Neco Williams, who helps Kristensen dodge the United and Chelsea games in GW3 and 8. A Neco/Kris rotation cost just as much as a 4.5m defender rotation, and at that price you're probably looking at CBs/non-attacking fullbacks.
    > Defence SHOULD improve with the inclusion of Tyler Adams and Roca in center midfield, keeping in mind Kalvin had a really poor season in 21/22, which contributed a really poor showing in the back. Marsch has also made them more solid since he came anyway.

If he was 4.5m he’d be straight in my team. He looked good in the Leeds vs Villa game in Brisbane yesterday. I reckon he’ll pick up a few yellows though! Doesn’t shy away from challenges.

Agreed with this, was hoping he'd be 4.5 but hard to justify the extra with the options available at both price points

With the early ‘change entire team’ coming in GW 16 would it be crazy to start with a team with just the first 2 GWs in mind, with a view to an early WC?
    I think we can learn a lot after even just one GW this year, that we don’t know now, like;
    1. Are Chelsea playing wing-backs
    2. Who looks like first-choice for Leister full-backs.
    3. First choice Arsenal attackers
    4. Does Sterling change Chelsea’s system
    5. Zincenko full-back or centre mid

No it is not crazy to plan for an early WC

Im looking at WCing in 8 during IB but yeah, I think we can just WC at any point when our teams go south and we need a quick fix, because of the unlimited transfers in GW16.

I think Chelsea are determined to play wingbacks but like it depends if they get their CB targets.
People say Justin is the favorite but I really like Pereira/Castagne as the starters. They both were the top choice during Leicester's Europe run last season while Justin Thomas were the league fullback duos.
Jesus and Saka are the main people there, rest arre a little unpredicatable.
Not really, Raheen should slot in at LW. Wonder if that means Werner takes up the CF spot again.
      Centre mid, for sure.

It's not crazy - It's a valid strategy. However, I'd advise against WC GW2 as you'd be better waiting for the transfer window to close.

Ok this might be a bit different and my first draft without 5 at the back it’s 451
Obvious cons no Haaland or Kane /Son and if Jesus doesn’t play I get 10 out.
But this is based on 4 strong defenders, Salah perma C + 3 * 8 mids and a nice 6.5 spot for Rashford /Wilson etc
Basically go after the value in defenders and mid spots.
With so many choices with these 8.0 mids is it a viable strategy to only transfer these spots? Or would it end up like GK rotation where you always pick the wrong ones.

Anyway here is the draft. It’s not about the personnel right now just the price points and .5 ITB to allow for Bowen in or price rises.

    Henderson

    Trent Cancelo Laporte James

    Salah Diaz Mahrez Kulu Rashford

    Jesus

    4.0 Neco 4.5 4.5

        Risk it for a biscuit
. 5 ITB could be used for a small upgrade on Neco
But I might actually use the .5 ITB and Rashford to a 6.0 spot to go Laporte Robertson.

Pretty pleased with the latest draft, any other thoughts here? Keeping an eye on Rashford, think the easiest way to get him in would be Ederson & Neto -> Raya/Meslier & Rash, or possibly James/Chilwell -> Tierney/Cash/Cucu

    Ederson 4.5
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell James Williams
Salah Diaz Neto Bailey Da Silva
    Haaland Jesus Archer

I would not go Ederson it blocks you from a third City. Believe me I have been there and having to use 2 transfers to get out of it is annoying. Just get a 4.5, loads of great options and spend the money on that midfield.

im not a fan of 2 chelsea def, so yeah RJ/BC ->someone lower price, for rashford.
      i suggest JWP over rashford.
go for ederson if u like it, 5.5m is not really waste for someone who can deliver 150+ pts over 2 seasons, besides i dont see any other city asset who can be trusted, besides haaland, KDB, cancelo. which is u cant afford them easily.

You know that you need info on a few of the picks during pre season to ensure they are nailed etc, as they have competition for a place, so I won’t comment further except to say they could be great diffs.
Considering it has 3 big hitters it looks good.
I have never got points from Sanchez always own him at the wrong time.
And I think the Liverpool defence has proven itself for enough years now that I would not be going without at least 1 of them.
Thanks for reply above totally different teams but I like both. Pricing has been criticized this year but I think it’s fun we can have so many good players. Does it make it easier for “casuals” - maybe. But if we can’t beat them with the same budget then we are the “casuals” 🙂

pretty sure it will change again, mate!
But I'm now leaning towards three big hitters, and no Liverpool defender is the price for that, at the moment.
I do rate Trent and Robertson very high as everyone else do... Just cant have them all.

"Balance" is overrated, like 'value'. It's 'balance' that kept people tied to 343 long after it became obsolete.
It's like saying temperatures are x degrees higher than normal, when the "normal" hasn't been normal since 1985.
      Just go for maximum points.

It depends what you mean by balance. Is Kane Son Sterling Jesus Diaz etc likely to outscore them; maybe not; maybe yes, so you can put money in other areas. If it means the balance in terms of positions; I would not worry about it too much. FOMO is playing too larger part IMO this season. Play the game for fun and see what turns out. If Haaland gets a brace and Jesus fails for example; so what; it will be 30 points to make up and not the end of your season.

thanks for your comment. I think haaland is a must and cheap by 1.0 tbf.
        by balance I mean:

        Salah + Neto + Jonny
        or
        Diaz + Foden + Diaz
this is meaning of balance in squad.
by selling salah you can upgrade 2 other players.

He'll get very high ownership, unless Undav hits the ground running. Antonio will quickly get crocked or lose form, so Broja should get enough gametime for a 5.5. Would be ideal 2nd striker to a Kane or Haaland, yeah.
Newcastle are also going for him, with Wilson also having a risky injury record and Wood being a flop.

    Thoughts on current balanced draft

    4.5
    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - James
    Salah - Saka - Neto - Bailey
    Kane - Jesus

    4 - Neco - Andreas - Archer

Looks good. Same as mine except I have kovacic and mount over saka and bailey.

Really like the 4-4-2 set up. Looks like the way to go rather than 5 atb. Gives you much needed balance with 2 guaranteed starters in bench.

The only change I would make here is to have more city presence than arsenal. So I would be getting Mahrez/grealish instead of Saka

Think it's where I'm going to go, and is very flexible if anyone gets injured/becomes a worse option before the start of the season

Also Saka is a great pick, but just a placeholder before city's pre-season. Hopefully have more insight by August!

If it's prompting you to pick Diaz, Jota needs to be out for more than one gameweek!

This is my current draft I have been tinkering with.

Would you go Robertson instead of TAA in order to upgrade Ait Nourri to a 5M defender (Cash, Trippier)

    Sanchez

TAA / Chilwell / Laporte / Ait Nourri

    Salah / Diaz / Mount / Martinelli

    Kane / Jesus

    Caballero | Andreas | Williams | Archer

    Thanks

Like it a lot, just will be a worry GW2 not captaining a City player. Personally doing something similar but Cancelo over Laporte so he can realistically be captained

Cheers, plan was to bring in Haaland in GW2, also mount can also become Foden.

Still unsure if going Laporte over Cancelo is the right move? If I go Cancelo it means I cannot have 2 x 8M midfielders.

I think Laporte is great cover for Cancelo and think you can get away with him if you have another City player (or are planning on bringing in GW2)

Laporte has been in individual training due to a "minor niggle" and he didn't travel for the tour in the US.

Haaland traveled and is back in training as of today.

New draft. Is it viable to just pick all the 8m midfielders lol

    Henderson
    Trent, Robertson, Cancelo, James, Chilwell
    Diaz, Saka, Mount, Foden
    Haaland

    4.0, Undav, Andreas, Greenwood

It's definitely interesting. I had an almost identical one with Maddison over Chilwell.

    RMT
    Lloris, 4.0

    Salah, Sancho, Odegaard, Diaz (Andreas)
    Kane (Greenwood, Taylor)

Been settled on this for the longest than my other drafts so far!

    Ramsdale (4.0)
    TAA, Cancelo, Trippier, Alt-Nouri, (Neco)
    Son, Diaz, Mount, Rashford (Andreas)
    Haaland, Jesus (Greenwood)

Considering TAA to Robertson so i can upgrade Alt-Nouri to a 5m defender.
Rashford is a gamble but it's a gut feeling i've had from the start so sticking to it!
No Salah! I think his points can be matched by Son.
If Haaland doesn't start strong then quick swap to Kane.
