Sir Alex Ferguson has today indicated that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the season having suffered a broken metatarsal. According to Ferguson, the former Fulham man will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him sidelined for ten weeks…

“He got an injury on the Wednesday and, straight away, we decided to have the operation so he’s out…It’s difficult to say with a metatarsal but it could be 10 weeks.”

The news follows confirmation that Jonny Evans is also likely to sit out the season openers with an ankle injury. Nemanja Vidic is another possible absentee for United’s kick-off, although Ferguson has been optimistic in his assessment of the Serb’s prognosis. Vidic is building up his fitness following a knee injury that has kept him out since December.

For Fantasy managers, this uncertainty could present the opportunity for short-term acquisitions within the United backline. Their centre-back pairing looks far from certain at this stage, while right-back is a slot that, once again, looks to be up for grabs. Both Rafael and Phil Jones could be set to start the season in Ferguson’s backline, then, presenting a cheaper route to early defensive returns. Rafael is available at 5.5 in the FPL, 6.6 in the Sky Sports Game – the cheapest of United’s defence. Jones, meanwhile, is also available for 6.0, with a 7.0 price in Sky Sports.

While keeper David De Gea’s name has been widely circulated as a likely candidate for our initial Fantasy lineups, due in the main to his 6.0 FPL price tag, these short term alternatives may now be more attractive as coverage options.

Despite De Gea’s outstanding form at the tail-end of last season, his starting role could well come under threat from Anders Lindegaard following his recovery from an ankle injury that saw him displaced as the Old Trafford number one by the Spaniard. Lindegaard is, however, likely to gain the opportunity to stake another claim for the keeper’s jersey in pre-season whilst De Gea is away on Olympic duty. Should Spain make the final on August 10, there’s every chance that Lindegaard will get the nod for the season opener.

That first trip to Goodison presents a stern test for the United rearguard, although the Everton clash is followed by an obliging set of early match-ups that has United face Fulham and Wigan at Old Trafford, with a visit to Southampton providing the filling in that sandwich. All three fixtures present clear potential for clean sheets with Fantasy managers looking to cash in with their initial lineup selections.

Today’s news on Smalling will now have us eagerly tracking the progress of Vidic and Evans, with one eye firmly on United’s pre-season team selections. Interestingly, Scott Wooton has so far started both of United’s pre-season matches in the centre of defence alongside Rio Ferdinand – he retains his place in today’s side that faced Ajax in Cape Town. Wooton is yet to arrive in either the FPL or Sky Sports games.

Given his price tag, it’s perhaps Rafael who currently looks the most intriguing option on offer. He could potentially cement his place if he can start the season and maintain form. The problem here is that he could himself be a doubt for the season opener: Rafael’s participation with Brazil in the Olympics is a concern and another situation that requires monitoring, adding to the increasing uncertainty in the United camp.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just got a point of discussion I'd like peoples opinion on. Why is it teams do better at home than away? Its just kind of accepted thats the way it is, but why so? Obviously playing at home is I guess comfortable in front of your own fans which is supportive, but similarly can be a hinderence if they get on your back, playing away you dont feel this pressure. And more so the opposition is exactly the same in terms of players so why should it be such an issue where the match is played.

This issue translates to FPL in that a team / player is backed a lot more when playing at home than away, which sometimes works in favour but sometimes a team can demolish another team even playing away from home.

      I don't get this either.
Psychological stuff I think. But again, players at this level should overcome psychological holdback, and perform well no matter home or away

yeah i've always found this interesting. it's not just players performing worse though; managers set up their teams far more cautiously away, the preconception that home > away completely alters the dynamic of matches.

It is a common trend in ALL sports.

      I believe the reasons are;

      1. Travel
      2. Home team can go about "daily routine" and sleep in their own bed.
      3. Familiar sightlines on the pitch

A study I saw on newsnight last year claimed that the influence of fans on referees was an important factor. At somewhere like Old Trafford, that definitely rings true.

I guess if your two rotations are:

          GK - Stoke/West Ham

          Def - Fulham/Sunderland/West Ham

You should use a different rotation for one of the those positions so there's no double ups

          will begovic start all games?

i think one of the newcastle defenders are hard to omit at 5 mill , santon, collochini, maybe even taylor depending on how the pre season goes

Cuellar may not start, he didnt always start with MON at Villa. Maybe Turner may be picked instead. hard to know really.

I also like Verthogen with his goal scoring and their easy fixtures.

the defence ive picked so far is:

          Cole A£6.5,Vertonghen,£6.5,Hangeland,£5.0 ,Coloccini,£5.0,Turner,£4.5

and they rotate pretty well for ~10 weeks....again depends on cuellar/turner ...

    Having some trouble...

    Friedel, Federici
    Ivanovic, Lescott, Cuellar, 4M, 4M
    Bale, Hazard, Noble, Maloney, 6M
    Aguero, Rooney, Graham

Cant figure some 4M defenders to work with Cuellar, any ideas? or anything else I can do for 4.5/4/4 for a defensive spot?

          than except Graham>petric,
the defence rotation is real good. should definitely spend .5m on wilson, and save .5m getting dyer instead.

can do, but I would avoid rotation at the bac. Last thing you want is Mancini resting clichy in a easy fixture and played Kolarav/Zabeleta instead, whoever is the LB.

But what i meant is Dyer cost only 5.5m and got good fixture. No need to change to Clichy to get the .5.

also, at 6.0m you would not be getting much better players either.

Bale is better coverage than ade.

Front 3 is too valuable to use a space on ade, unless he proves form

forwards generally have a higher goal involvement than midifelders (forward 40% to midfielders 20%)

but bale has same goal involvement % than ade last season.
and since bale and ade are the same price, you would be better off getting other forward.
