Sir Alex Ferguson has today indicated that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the season having suffered a broken metatarsal. According to Ferguson, the former Fulham man will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him sidelined for ten weeks…

“He got an injury on the Wednesday and, straight away, we decided to have the operation so he’s out…It’s difficult to say with a metatarsal but it could be 10 weeks.â€

The news follows confirmation that Jonny Evans is also likely to sit out the season openers with an ankle injury. Nemanja Vidic is another possible absentee for United’s kick-off, although Ferguson has been optimistic in his assessment of the Serb’s prognosis. Vidic is building up his fitness following a knee injury that has kept him out since December.

For Fantasy managers, this uncertainty could present the opportunity for short-term acquisitions within the United backline. Their centre-back pairing looks far from certain at this stage, while right-back is a slot that, once again, looks to be up for grabs. Both Rafael and Phil Jones could be set to start the season in Ferguson’s backline, then, presenting a cheaper route to early defensive returns. Rafael is available at 5.5 in the FPL, 6.6 in the Sky Sports Game – the cheapest of United’s defence. Jones, meanwhile, is also available for 6.0, with a 7.0 price in Sky Sports.

While keeper David De Gea’s name has been widely circulated as a likely candidate for our initial Fantasy lineups, due in the main to his 6.0 FPL price tag, these short term alternatives may now be more attractive as coverage options.

Despite De Gea’s outstanding form at the tail-end of last season, his starting role could well come under threat from Anders Lindegaard following his recovery from an ankle injury that saw him displaced as the Old Trafford number one by the Spaniard. Lindegaard is, however, likely to gain the opportunity to stake another claim for the keeper’s jersey in pre-season whilst De Gea is away on Olympic duty. Should Spain make the final on August 10, there’s every chance that Lindegaard will get the nod for the season opener.

That first trip to Goodison presents a stern test for the United rearguard, although the Everton clash is followed by an obliging set of early match-ups that has United face Fulham and Wigan at Old Trafford, with a visit to Southampton providing the filling in that sandwich. All three fixtures present clear potential for clean sheets with Fantasy managers looking to cash in with their initial lineup selections.

Today’s news on Smalling will now have us eagerly tracking the progress of Vidic and Evans, with one eye firmly on United’s pre-season team selections. Interestingly, Scott Wooton has so far started both of United’s pre-season matches in the centre of defence alongside Rio Ferdinand – he retains his place in today’s side that faced Ajax in Cape Town. Wooton is yet to arrive in either the FPL or Sky Sports games.

Given his price tag, it’s perhaps Rafael who currently looks the most intriguing option on offer. He could potentially cement his place if he can start the season and maintain form. The problem here is that he could himself be a doubt for the season opener: Rafael’s participation with Brazil in the Olympics is a concern and another situation that requires monitoring, adding to the increasing uncertainty in the United camp.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Pls RMT

    Jaaskelainen Henderson
Cole A Williams Lescott Gorkss Hangeland
    Bale Lampard Sinclair Nolan Guthrie
    Rooney Aguero Pogrebnyak

I worry about Gorkss but will change with someone other 4.0m defender. Maybe that new guy from Readin. I have 6 double players. Is it too much. Torres is in GW1 and Rooney is in GW2.

    Thoughts ?

P.S. Before WC we won't know what goalkeeper strategy is the best so I am not gonna spend money in a small risk/ reward part of my team. I am not gonna spend 2 more m for 3 - 5 GW's.

To start, Kagawa, Hazard, Petric, Michu (providing he's less than 6) are all attackers with no Prem exp. I think the risk is calculated and I think the potential reward could be terrific.

    For Daniel:
"I don’t get it. Why everybody are mentioning 3way rotation? What that means. 3 defenders to pay for on spot in starting 11? 2 x 2 rotation is way much better. IMO"

Here's an example of team with 2x2-way rotation

    6.0 4.5/4.5 4.5/4.5 = total cost of 24

For each rotating defender, you have only two fixture choices every week. Thus you probably need to get more expensive defenders.

    and with 3-way rotation

    6.0 6.0 4.5/4.0/4.0 = total cost of 24.5

You have three fixture choices every week for your one rotating defender. Thus you can make at least some of the defenders cheaper.

The result is that with 3-way, for a similar cost you can have two elite defenders and one rotating defender with a good fixture, as opposed to one elite defender and two rotating defenders with poorer fixtures.

problem is big team's defensive record is more steady, while mid-table teams' defensive record varies. But you got a point, may play around with it for a while.

Yeah exactly - so I'd rather have what the 3-way rotation offers which is 2 defenders from a steady big team with 1 defender from a variable small team (instead of 1 defender from a big team and 2 defenders from a small team). .

I always go with 5 way rotation - look for 3 or 4 bargains then fill the gaps with players who have good fixtures in the GW's where you are struggling. So far I've come up with:

      Kaboul - Rafael - Hangeland - Fabio - B.Jones

      Ok but as previously mentioned.

I don't think you're thinking this through Dan, the 3-way rotation by definition has more cover for cards/injury/players being dropped than a 2-way rotation.

It seems 3 way rotation has taken a bit of a hit today. If you have two 4m defenders in that rotation i think it can be quite strong. For example:

    Al-Habsi Green
Ivanovic Lescott | Cuellar Demel Gunter
Valencia Hazard Kagawa | McAnuff Noble
    Aguero Torres Graham

Cuellar Demel and Gunter rotate over one slot and because of their price, it doesn't comprimise the rest of the team. Is there something i'm missing?

Yep when you have more money in individual players it takes fewer transfers to free up that money. If you've got a bunch of 4.5s it will take multiple transfers to free up their money.

That's why I'm going for Rooney and Aguero up front - the money is very easy to free up if anything happens.

      Yes

      - De Gea & Rafael at the Olympics, and i wouldn't double up on any defence early on.

      - Jenkinson won't keep his place for long, and has no decent replacement.

      - Kagawa & Hazard and both Prem newbies, one or the other IMHO.

      - Pienaar and Everton are known for there poor starts.

It's a forum where people come on here to give advice and receive advice, I try to give advice if I think it will help or benefit people and like minded people do the same. I'm not asking people to pick my team for me

That's an expensive 3 team rotation. You want one or two 4m players as they are occupying just one slot in your team.

save .5 and do Fabio to Demel.

      (if you want)

Predictions on price and position for Hoillet? If he's a 6 million mid do we think he's worth the investment. Was looking at dumping McClean for Michu and maybe Taarabt for Hoilett, but am tempted to keep McLean and just have Fabio from QPR.

Certainly looks set to be a Forward after playing so far forward last season, if he was a £6.0m Mid i'd take him over Taarabt any day.

as would I, but I don't see it.

hmm, may have to drop Clichy to Lescott to get Bent in then.

What do you think of Petric as punt?
