Sir Alex Ferguson has today indicated that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the season having suffered a broken metatarsal. According to Ferguson, the former Fulham man will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him sidelined for ten weeks…

“He got an injury on the Wednesday and, straight away, we decided to have the operation so he’s out…It’s difficult to say with a metatarsal but it could be 10 weeks.”

The news follows confirmation that Jonny Evans is also likely to sit out the season openers with an ankle injury. Nemanja Vidic is another possible absentee for United’s kick-off, although Ferguson has been optimistic in his assessment of the Serb’s prognosis. Vidic is building up his fitness following a knee injury that has kept him out since December.

For Fantasy managers, this uncertainty could present the opportunity for short-term acquisitions within the United backline. Their centre-back pairing looks far from certain at this stage, while right-back is a slot that, once again, looks to be up for grabs. Both Rafael and Phil Jones could be set to start the season in Ferguson’s backline, then, presenting a cheaper route to early defensive returns. Rafael is available at 5.5 in the FPL, 6.6 in the Sky Sports Game – the cheapest of United’s defence. Jones, meanwhile, is also available for 6.0, with a 7.0 price in Sky Sports.

While keeper David De Gea’s name has been widely circulated as a likely candidate for our initial Fantasy lineups, due in the main to his 6.0 FPL price tag, these short term alternatives may now be more attractive as coverage options.

Despite De Gea’s outstanding form at the tail-end of last season, his starting role could well come under threat from Anders Lindegaard following his recovery from an ankle injury that saw him displaced as the Old Trafford number one by the Spaniard. Lindegaard is, however, likely to gain the opportunity to stake another claim for the keeper’s jersey in pre-season whilst De Gea is away on Olympic duty. Should Spain make the final on August 10, there’s every chance that Lindegaard will get the nod for the season opener.

That first trip to Goodison presents a stern test for the United rearguard, although the Everton clash is followed by an obliging set of early match-ups that has United face Fulham and Wigan at Old Trafford, with a visit to Southampton providing the filling in that sandwich. All three fixtures present clear potential for clean sheets with Fantasy managers looking to cash in with their initial lineup selections.

Today’s news on Smalling will now have us eagerly tracking the progress of Vidic and Evans, with one eye firmly on United’s pre-season team selections. Interestingly, Scott Wooton has so far started both of United’s pre-season matches in the centre of defence alongside Rio Ferdinand – he retains his place in today’s side that faced Ajax in Cape Town. Wooton is yet to arrive in either the FPL or Sky Sports games.

Given his price tag, it’s perhaps Rafael who currently looks the most intriguing option on offer. He could potentially cement his place if he can start the season and maintain form. The problem here is that he could himself be a doubt for the season opener: Rafael’s participation with Brazil in the Olympics is a concern and another situation that requires monitoring, adding to the increasing uncertainty in the United camp.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Re 3 team rotations..

    SUN/STO/WHU - 4.5/4.5/4 - 5 reds, 1 orange, 2 yellow on spreadsheet

    SUN/SOT/WHU - 4.5/4/4 - 4 reds, 3 orange, 1 yellow

SUN/SOT/WHU will give 0.5 saving to get Untied defender. Thoughts?

I am going SUN, SOT, WHU. I guess i will mainly be putting the SOT on bench to start. Now i need to settle on a 5.5M mid. Enough tinkering for now.

I still like my FUL/QPR/WHU rotation, it is by no means perfect and will occasionally result in me having to play a defender away from home, but in the home fixtures it has 2 yellows and 2 orange with 0 reds.

Got the team down to one remaining problem: how to spend 17m on three mids.

Looks like my team basically depends on how many penalties Swansea (Sinclair), West Ham (Noble) and Wigan (Maloney??) get.

If they're going to be rare, might well end up chopping and changing.

    3 way rotation.

Using 3 players for one spot. Meaning. You have only one substitution. The 2 left overs are shit and can't come from the bench. So when injury/ cards/ rotation comes woalah 😀 You RDG defender comes from the bench in away game against City. You are gonna be so happy.

Alternative? Yes of course. I saw that money analyze. Well I don't buy it. One premium defender and one good value arond 5.5 - 6.5m There is always some options from the top teams. Then you have 2 way rotation and depending on the cash the 5th one is either Simpson like last year or Enrique like last year. A keeper. Thanks but for me no 3 way rotation.

Time will tell but its not gonna work especially for the fact that you are not gonna have a bench and this is a squad game.

Whats your solution? Play one big hitter, then two rotating pairs of mid-priced? That sounds like you're benching a lot of 5m players and in exchange for losing another big hitter. If a defender does come against a good team(it will never be City as you will always have 3 options) then that's fine, your other two big hitter defenders will probably supply the CSs. If that's the worst case then i'm fine with that 🙂 I see your point though, but it's not for me 🙂

I think since you don't like the theory of it the best thing is for you to suggest one of your 2x2-way defences and we'll look at how the fixtures and price compare against a 3-way defence.

Then at least you can see in practice how it works out. It's actually got more protection against players not being able to play than the 2x2-way system.

you make a good point, but I'm just not convinced I can go without City or United cover at the back. If Rafa was nailed on at 5.5 life would be easy. Sometimes I play 4 at the back as I feel that my attackers' don't have as nice fixtures. I see the merit in your argument for sure but I think I have found a nice fit with my defence.

In order to afford a decent number of big hitters, there need to be weaknesses in the team somewhere. And having one 4.5 defender and two 4 defenders isn't the worst place to have it.

Indeed. I like it though. All have potential to get attacking or bonus points. All have some cracking fixtures. And it allows for easy transfers, i could easily swap one out for Glen Johnson, Rafael, Gibbs, Baines etc.... It's also easier to downgrade then upgrade.

slight variation on my initial thougths but kinda happy with this lot so far.

    Friedel / Schwarzer

    Cuellar / Rafael / Clichy / Jenkinson / Rangel

    Maloney / Valencia / Hazard / Dyer / Ramires

    Tevez / Torres / Petric

    3.0 in the bank

Still not overly convinced with Ramires but he should do for the double g/w. Other than that, the spare cash goes for funding Torres to Rooney/RVP
