Sir Alex Ferguson has today indicated that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the season having suffered a broken metatarsal. According to Ferguson, the former Fulham man will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him sidelined for ten weeks…

“He got an injury on the Wednesday and, straight away, we decided to have the operation so he’s out…It’s difficult to say with a metatarsal but it could be 10 weeks.â€

The news follows confirmation that Jonny Evans is also likely to sit out the season openers with an ankle injury. Nemanja Vidic is another possible absentee for United’s kick-off, although Ferguson has been optimistic in his assessment of the Serb’s prognosis. Vidic is building up his fitness following a knee injury that has kept him out since December.

For Fantasy managers, this uncertainty could present the opportunity for short-term acquisitions within the United backline. Their centre-back pairing looks far from certain at this stage, while right-back is a slot that, once again, looks to be up for grabs. Both Rafael and Phil Jones could be set to start the season in Ferguson’s backline, then, presenting a cheaper route to early defensive returns. Rafael is available at 5.5 in the FPL, 6.6 in the Sky Sports Game – the cheapest of United’s defence. Jones, meanwhile, is also available for 6.0, with a 7.0 price in Sky Sports.

While keeper David De Gea’s name has been widely circulated as a likely candidate for our initial Fantasy lineups, due in the main to his 6.0 FPL price tag, these short term alternatives may now be more attractive as coverage options.

Despite De Gea’s outstanding form at the tail-end of last season, his starting role could well come under threat from Anders Lindegaard following his recovery from an ankle injury that saw him displaced as the Old Trafford number one by the Spaniard. Lindegaard is, however, likely to gain the opportunity to stake another claim for the keeper’s jersey in pre-season whilst De Gea is away on Olympic duty. Should Spain make the final on August 10, there’s every chance that Lindegaard will get the nod for the season opener.

That first trip to Goodison presents a stern test for the United rearguard, although the Everton clash is followed by an obliging set of early match-ups that has United face Fulham and Wigan at Old Trafford, with a visit to Southampton providing the filling in that sandwich. All three fixtures present clear potential for clean sheets with Fantasy managers looking to cash in with their initial lineup selections.

Today’s news on Smalling will now have us eagerly tracking the progress of Vidic and Evans, with one eye firmly on United’s pre-season team selections. Interestingly, Scott Wooton has so far started both of United’s pre-season matches in the centre of defence alongside Rio Ferdinand – he retains his place in today’s side that faced Ajax in Cape Town. Wooton is yet to arrive in either the FPL or Sky Sports games.

Given his price tag, it’s perhaps Rafael who currently looks the most intriguing option on offer. He could potentially cement his place if he can start the season and maintain form. The problem here is that he could himself be a doubt for the season opener: Rafael’s participation with Brazil in the Olympics is a concern and another situation that requires monitoring, adding to the increasing uncertainty in the United camp.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

anyone liking this idea of having one expensive def at the back(lescott, cole, terry, ivanovic) with 4 players priced under or at 5 from defensively solid teams who also rotate well?

    im thinking

    DDG,fed

*Hangeland,Coloccini,Cuellar,Alcaraz* with someone like cole to begin with

total cost 25.5 and cole can be switched to any other big def after two weeks:

    Fixtures don't look bad either

the defence is not going to provide u a lot of points plus u only have 3 mids that can actually guarantee you points. downgrade either tevez or rooney , get noble or maloney and get at least one more defender from a sold team

Role in the team - main striker for a team with plenty of supply. Great at 6.0. Petric is competing with Rodallega, Pog won't get much supply.

Right with the news Pienaar looks like staying with Everton I've reshuffled the midfield:

    Federici Friedel
    Cole Lescott [Cuellar Gunter McCartney]
    Kagawa Hazard [Pienaar Dyer Noble]
    Aguero Torres Graham

    Torres > Rooney GW2

A for me. Bale Is always a goal/assist threat and I think Torres might come out storming after the euros and a more suited team for him this year at Chels.

Hazard untested in prem (although in my team) and Rooney has a poor record against Everton, who at home, are a decent side even if they do start slowly.

Daniel's post has got me thinking about having a weak bench, so what do people think about this team?

    Al-Habsi Green
Ivanovic Lescott | Cuellar Demel Clyne
Valencia Hazard Kagawa | Noble McAnuff
    Aguero Torres Graham

Noble or McAnuff will always be on my bench in case of injuries/rotation etc, but it is thin after that. On the other hand, needing two or more subs will happen rarely. Anyway, marks out of 10 for the final team? 🙂

      7.75.

Don't like the keepers or the double United attack, downgrade either Tony V or Kagawa and leave some money in the bank for Torres to Rooney in GW2.

I personally like having 2 heavy hitters at the back but that would hamper your plans to get Rooney in so I'd stick. Haven't checked but if your 4 cheapies at the back form 2 pairs of rotating defenders then it looks pretty decent to me. Walters could be an interesting pick, but personally not taking a gamble on someone who finsihed the season poorly and went to the Euros.

If Gerrard stays fit all season he'll probably play about 80% of PL games, but he'll probably be limited to one game a week.

As for Chelsea, I don't know how the new signings are all fitting in, but I imagine he'll still have a prominent first team role, but again, not play every game.
Capable of big things when he does play though I reckon, though he is likely to be used defensively in midfield considering the depth of attack they have now

Well, he can be deadly. It rather depends on whether he can maintain his composure at this level. O'Neill and Collison worth looking at too. Won't be touching Nolan with the proverbial bargepole, although I hope he does well, obviously.

Yeah I did, but there's normally a gentlemen's agreement that the yellow jersey isn't fought over, especially when there's a 3 min gap. It's virtually impossible to make up significant time because the stage is so flat anyway and it's easy to cover moves.

Thoughts on this team? I like the heavy front 3, with a couple of heavy mids, a couple of high potential mids, a heavy defender, and the rest cheap fillers with hopefully guarenteed starts.

    Jaaskelainen - Begovic
    Cole - Williams - Fabio - Fox - Harte
De Guzman - Lallana - Hazard - Kagawa - Noble
    Torres - Rooney - Tevez

I'll start with Torres captain probably. However, not sure about the rotation of the two keepers, plus whether Harte will start ahead of Shorey.

    DDG Jussi

    (Mariappa) Ivanovic Rio Koscienly (Fonte)

    (Frei) Nasri Kagawa Hazard (Guthrie)

    Tevez Torres Giroud

I will definitely be changing, final team will be done a couple of days before I would think but i do quite like teh look of this. With Smalling and likely Evans injured, Rio is nailed on, Fergie has been raving about Kagawa so again i think he'll start.
