Sam Allardyce continued his summer of first-team restructuring on Wednesday with the acquisition of Modibo Maiga from Ligue 1 side FC Sochaux. The highly-rated 24-year-old arrives on a four-year deal thought to be in the region of £4.7m and is the fifth player to make his way to Upton Park since the club’s promotion, following the transfers of Jussi Jaaskelainen, George McCartney, Stephen Henderson and Mohamed Diame:

The Mali international has already received Premier League interest this year – he failed a medical last January at Newcastle, with the Magpies turning instead to Papiss Cisse to boost their strikeforce. A versatile player, he is primarily a centre forward but can also play on the wing; at 6 foot 1, though, Big Sam is likely to play him through the middle as he goes about addressing his options up front. The new boy made all the right noises upon his arrival earlier in the week, going on to say:

I am really happy and excited about joining West Ham United. I know West Ham are a big club in England and I’m really looking forward to representing them. They have huge tradition and it is like joining part of a family and that is one of the main reasons I wanted to come here. I know some of the big names that have played for the club in the past and I am proud to be part of a new team back in the Premier League.

The Statistics

Maiga first start in professional football came in his native country for Stade Malien at the age of 15. He featured just three times there before making his way to Morocco to turn out for Raja Casablanca where, despite failing to score in 22 appearances over the course of a couple of seasons, he won the Arab Champions League and Moroccan League. As a 20-year-old, he was snapped up by French side Le Mans and flourished in a team that also featured the likes of Gervinho and Stephane Sessegnon – Maiga returned 15 goals and six assists over 88 appearances prior to signing for FS Sochaux in time for the 2010/11 campaign.

His first season at Sochaux was a spectacular success, with 15 goals and three assists from 36 appearances, though Maiga suffered in comparison last term. The club’s refusal to allow him to join Newcastle in August 2011 saw him go on strike in order to force a move through – eventually returning to the first-team, he found the net nine times and produced a pair of assists from 23 league matches as his side stuttered to a 14th place finish. Maiga has represented his country on 31 occasions and notched five times – no doubt we’ll be subjected to plenty of “the next Freddy Kanoute” headlines over his time at Upton Park.

The Prospects

A powerful striker, Maiga will also bring plenty pace to the Hammers’ up front options next season. His dynamic game is suited to the speed of the Premier League and will perhaps stand him in good stead in terms of game time next term, providing he can keep his temperament in check. Allardyce still seems undecided on Carlton Cole – 12 of the forward’s 43 appearances last term came from the bench and while Ricardo Vaz Te impressed with 12 goals in 18 appearances upon his January arrival from Barnsley, question marks remain over his ability to produce in the Premier League.

At present, plenty speculation surrounds the West Ham front line. Moves for Andy Carroll and Dimitar Berbatov have been mooted and, while neither may come to fruition, the intent is clear – Big Sam is looking to freshen things up in the forward positions. Looking at the stats, Maiga is clearly best utilised as part of a front two – those 15 goals in 36 appearances in 2010/11 saw him partnered up front in a 4-3-1-2 but Sochaux’s move to 4-2-3-1 last term clearly dented his potential.

If he can nail down a regular role under Allardyce, Maiga could earn interest as a cut-price option in our Fantasy squads. Similar to Cole and Vaz Te, he comes in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) though intriguingly, the Sky Sports game has priced him as the cheapest of the trio at just 6.1 – many are likely to hold fire at the moment, however, with the Hammers certain to continue their summer spending.

Certainly, the opening set of fixtures have been kind to West Ham. Over the first five Gameweeks, Allardyce’s men play host to (AVL, FUL, SUN) and with trips to Swansea and Norwich also on the agenda, confidence in their budget and mid-price Fantasy assets will be relatively high. In terms of ownership, looking at the Sky Sports game, Maiga is the least popular of the Hammers forwards so far – while he’s likely to sneak under the radar of many, then, the new boy may well be quick out the blocks.

Cech is guaranteed 2 starts, possibly two CSs and maybe some save points (maybe). As captain, he could easily net 24-28 points.

Hazard *might* play only one, 1+, and might not do much. [And, of course, he could score ... ]

It's called a differential and not a terrible one, imo.

Ok, I did say he could score some points but he is quite expensive for a GK. if you have him then it's not a bad idea to captain him but I just wouldnt have him in the first place

You may be entered into a broadcaster league:

A Fox Soccer league for managers from the USA, Anguilla, Antigua, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Eustatius, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rica, Saba, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Pierre & Miquelon, St Vincent & The Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands, US Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique, St Barts and St Martin.

Rumors according to who? Adebayor was in New York today, a New York Red Bulls coach posted a picture with him https://twitter.com/Jamie__Edwards/statuses/226735779777486848

The fact that he has travelled to New York and told a coach he is meeting up with Spurs there is more reliable than paper talk though. Even if Adebayor doesn't join Spurs, we will still sign at least one other striker, theres absolutely no chance on 1st September will just have Defoe and Kane.

    Friedel Federici

    Lescott Ivanovic Hangeland Tomkins Gunter

Will possibly get and Arsenal/Tottenham dender in GW 3 or 4.

Would like to have Tomkins in the team as an attacking threat, pretty much why Brede is there.

Bank: £ 1.0 mil. Would like to keep 0.5 mil to get ROoney in GW 2 and ditch Kun.

Personally not sold on Hangeland - Fulham were struggling for cleanies last term, can't see them suddenly change that around. Much more value in a New/Sun defender, imo.

I'm preferring Federici right now as a Reading option. As for Tompkins - very solid, could be a bonus magnet but I'm not sure on Big Sam's defence, both in terms of potential or the presence of cheaper options at full-back.

Hmmm... Would have an extra 0.5 mil to spend on a defender. Was thinking Fabio at first but not sure about his potential in the new club. Who can possibly be better than Tomkins for 4.5 mil though? Can't seem to find many options 🙁

What i'm saying is I wouldn't spend £5.0m on someone who i'd be rotating with two other defenders. I'd rather have Wilson, Cuellar & Demel and spend elsewhere.

yeah, i'm thinking there's a ridiculous amount of love going on for Hazard. Nearly 30% ownership for someone who hasn't played yet in the prem. Mata & Silva kinda took a bit of time ot settle in and Lamps has been doing damage for 5 years. At 9.0 I think his price is pretty decent and if he doesn't do much in the 1st 3 games pretty easy to downgrade, also a good early differential at only 4%. I know not necessary to look for diffs early on but just a though

Think you're right Mark. Add Community Shield to that. Think we'll spread quite wide in the rotation spot for that sort of oppo. Is leading me to going really safe 3 for DGW in Cech, Ash and Torres

Hazard and Mata for Newcastle game would be Di Matteo's priority I imagine. He'll also feel some pressure to give the home fans a glimpse of Hazard vs Reading too though - could start on the bench in that one, particularly if he starts with him at Wigan.

I have a quick 2 questions. Not seeing Pap Cisse in many teams. Surprising considering his form last season showed he is dangerous against any team. Could he be a good differential? There seems to be a generic pattern in most teams based around Kun, Lescott, Hazard etc.

    1. Does anyone think as a strategy GW1 is a time to look for deferentials or is it too early for that?

    2. Is it better to just stick with a mostly generic team to stay in touch with most in the league. Prevents that awful early WC conundrum in GW 2-3.

Too much money spent on your forwards as nice as it would be to have all 3 of them, it is detrimental to the rest of your team, downgrade one of them and upgrade the defence

Morgan is the best striker in our academy, keep up 😛

Sterling and Suso looked good, but we didn't create much atall, the goal came from a jinking little run from Sterling and a Morgan tap in.

Joe Cole and Adam were both shite too, quicker Cole leaves the better

Many seem to be opening with Pog because of the DGW. Graham and Holt were solid cut-price options last season. Lambert could be an x-factor, really hard to ignore his stats. Tough decision.

Just reviewing early pre-season page... who are these sides that QPR are putting to the sword... clean sheets at that. Any chance Rangers big improvers this year?

Also, no scout comments or summaries yet.... any knowledge on this baldock character scoring all Hammers' goals. Cheers

    De Gea | Jaaskelainen

    Ivanovic | Vertonghen | Demel | Williams | Clichy

    Mikel | Valencia | Song | Bale | Noble

Clichy bears some watching, to see/verify his 'lock' on the position, in re: Kolarov.

Mikel: is he likely to start, and often? That huge midfield list a Chels scares me a bit.

Tevez: need to monitor that RVP/AC Milan situation for their effect.

I love Valencia, but many are punting on the 0.5 cheaper Kagawa.

And I just am bearish on Arse, in general.
