Michael Laudrup’s third foray into the summer transfer market since becoming manager of Swansea has seen the Spanish attacking midfielder Michu arrive for a deal in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old – whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta – joins up at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year contract from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, after his goalscoring exploits helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation by a mere two points last season:

The move for Michu continues Laudrup’s policy of plundering talents that have previously caught his eye in Spain’s top-flight, with fellow new boys Jonathan De Guzman and Chico both having featured under the Dane in La Liga. Similar to De Guzman and Chico, Michu admits the allure of playing for Laudrup was simply too good an opportunity to miss:

I’m very happy. I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach, the style of play and the Premier League. I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style. I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that.

The Statistics

Michu began his career in the lower leagues in Spain where, as a 16-year-old, he debuted for Real Oviedo. Over the course of four campaigns, he notched 13 times in 100 appearances before being snapped up by Celta Vigo in 2007-08. Initially, he featured in the club’s “B” team but a tally of 10 goals from 28 games saw him end the campaign in the first-team at the second division side.

A modest 15 goals in 103 appearances over the next three seasons were unable to help his side win promotion to La Liga – a missed spot-kick in the 2010/11 promotion play-off against Granada proved costly as his side slipped to defeat 5-4 on penalties. Michu’s chance of playing in the Spanish top-flight was not to be denied, though; Rayo Vallecano came calling last summer after his contract with Celta expired and snapped him up on a Bosman.

Handed a role in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Michu was a sensation in his one and only season in La Liga. Despite their lowly league position, Vallecano racked up 53 goals – only six less than third placed Valencia – and their attacking approach helped Michu return 15 goals and three assists, making him the top scoring midfielder in Spain’s top division last time round.

The Prospects

Initially, many had expected De Guzman to slot into the attacking midfield position vacated by Gylfi Sigurdsson but Laudrup perhaps hinted at an alternative slot upon the player’s arrival when he stated the Dutch international could play in “anywhere in midfield”.

Michu, on the other hand, is a far more direct type of player and seems to be in the driving seat for the central role behind a lone striker as Laudrup goes about rebuilding his squad in light of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Although his ability to create opportunities for others isn’t quite up to Sigurdsson’s level, Michu is likely to offer a substantial goal threat for the Swans; standing 6 foot 1, he’s good in the air as well as on the ground and his strong work-ethic should also stand the Spaniard in good stead as he adjusts to the rigours of the Premier League.

With both player and manager experiencing the English top-flight for the first time, there’s some trepidation as to how quickly the Welsh club will settle under Laudrup but the Dane has already spelled out his intention to maintain the same shape and style of play from last term, suggesting the transition could well be seamless. Already, Michu is garnering plenty of attention, despite the fact he has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game; bearing in mind that De Guzman came in at 6.0, a similar cost looks on the cards, though. The Spaniard has been handed a 5.5 valuation in the Sky Sports game, offering us a viable mid-price Fantasy contender for the season ahead.

Casting an eye over the fixture list, Swansea have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any side. Over the first eight Gameweeks, they play at home five times – with (WHM, SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) all visiting the Liberty Stadium, in addition to trips to QPR, Villa and Stoke, some level of investment in Laudrup’s troops seems a sensible tactic. If Michu can settle quickly and replicate his Vallecano form, Swansea – and Fantasy managers – may well have found their Sigurdsson replacement for the season ahead.

In all seriousness though, what do people think of this team:

      Friedel, Federici
      Cole, Lescott, Hughes, Cuellar, Wilson
Hazard, Kagawa, Maloney, Noble, De Guzman
      Aguero, Torres, Graham

(2.0 in the bank to go Torres to Rooney)
(De guzman is just a filler, to become Michu if he's priced at 6.0)

    Federici-Jussi
    Cashley-LEscott-Hangeland-Fabio-Cuellar
    Hazard-Bale-Noble-Tarrabt-4.5
    Rooney-Aguero-Graham

Gonna have Torres in there for Rooney for GW1, but after that it’ll be Rooney.

Is there too much money in defence?

Michu could very well slot into my well priced midfielders if he's as much as a threat as this promoses, but i think this is how i will start..

    De gea Jussi
Lescott A Cole Jenkinson Cuellar, Williams
    Cabaye, Bale Taarabt Larsson Noble
    Aguero Rooney Pobgrenyak

I’m hoping to use De Gea, Lescott Cole as a constant, with 3 rotational defenders all low cost
One big hitter in midfield with 4 others very integrated in set pieces etc,
Two big hitting forwards and one low cost punt..
    Any thoughts appreciated.

    A. Bale / Tevez

    Ivanovic – Coloccini – Williams A – Lescott – Cuellar

Like you, I too am a Premier League FF snob…however this Skysports game is actually pretty good and notably different to the PL version. The main differences? Squad size (pick 11 only) and scoring (MoM, tackles made and passes completed will score you extra points; but, no BAPS and lessdifferentation between positions). Really makes you think…and the FFS Members stats are a massive help when choosing your team.

    There’s a FFS league too 😉 http://fantasyfootball.skysports.com/

Say Michu is 6.0/5.5 he will be worth considering.

Taking that into account Sinclair has pens and set pieces.

I thought he was a quality villain. It's a great film but quite a few flaws in it. Solid 4 stars.

    Pog – discuss.

I just don’t get it. Okay so he got a few goals when he first arrived at Fulham, however:

    1. He did little in the remainder of the season.
    2. People who knew him before EPL don’t rate him and suprised by his flurry of goals. Don’t think it will last
    3. Reading.
    4. vs Chelsea in one of the DGW games, so likely only an extra 2pts, let’s be honest…..
    5. Likley to want to ship him out within a few weeks which is hard for a 5.0 and probably requires two transfers.
    6. Reading…..

….of course he might be the bargin of the season and get the golden boot……but really??

He's cheap as chips at 5m, so him being my third striker allows me get Rooney and Aguero. I won't play him every week, and him being 5m makes it easier to bench than say a 7m striker

On the plus side...he did bang a few in for Fulham, looked strong as an ox/had decent control/could finish well/looked confident and will be the main attacking outlet for Reading this season. I don't remember anyone saying anything positive about Swansea pre-season last year, so we shouldn't write Reading off just yet. And he costs little more than a packet of Scampi Fries...

      1. He picked up an injury towards the end of the season.
      2. He was a big prospect while at Spartak and Zenit. Okay it never happened for him at Stuttgart but that happens sometimes.
      3. Yes he plays for Reading but weren't Graham, Holt and Cisse good shouts last season? Or Carroll the season before that.

Hi guys.. What do you think of this team? Could be a bit generic but i think it's pretty solid. Any advice?

Gorkss is not nailed on this season - get Mariappa instead (straight swap). I don't rate Yaya as a fantasy force.

Do you think he'll come straight into the team? I don't know much about Reading so i'll take your advice 🙂 Not really too keen on Yaya myself but for 8 mil you can't go wrong..I have a extra .5 in the bank, don't know who I could swap him for? Kagawa if i didn't already have 3 United!

Interestingly Michu provides a significant airial threat at 6 foot 1. Only one player in La Liga won more aerial duels per game than Michu's 4.1.

yea, theyre not quite physical in La Liga, but i do think he'll hold his own in the EPL and be around the league average for aerial duels.

In the Sky game Michu is .5m cheaper than Dyer who is £5.5m on FPL, he's even cheaper than Bradley Johnson! If that reflects in his FPL pricing he will be the biggest bandwagon ever seen on here! 😀

with the chelsea DGW to start what are people's thoughts on who to invest in. for example my first draft i went for ivan/hazard/torres and in my second i went for ivan/cole/hazard. so really is there more value in the defence or the attack? Also with the second option it allows for rooney!!!

seems to me that they'll be more attacking than last year, and therefore trying to outscore opponents. can't see them getting loads of CSs.
