Michael Laudrup’s third foray into the summer transfer market since becoming manager of Swansea has seen the Spanish attacking midfielder Michu arrive for a deal in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old – whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta – joins up at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year contract from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, after his goalscoring exploits helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation by a mere two points last season:

The move for Michu continues Laudrup’s policy of plundering talents that have previously caught his eye in Spain’s top-flight, with fellow new boys Jonathan De Guzman and Chico both having featured under the Dane in La Liga. Similar to De Guzman and Chico, Michu admits the allure of playing for Laudrup was simply too good an opportunity to miss:

I’m very happy. I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach, the style of play and the Premier League. I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style. I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that.

The Statistics

Michu began his career in the lower leagues in Spain where, as a 16-year-old, he debuted for Real Oviedo. Over the course of four campaigns, he notched 13 times in 100 appearances before being snapped up by Celta Vigo in 2007-08. Initially, he featured in the club’s “B” team but a tally of 10 goals from 28 games saw him end the campaign in the first-team at the second division side.

A modest 15 goals in 103 appearances over the next three seasons were unable to help his side win promotion to La Liga – a missed spot-kick in the 2010/11 promotion play-off against Granada proved costly as his side slipped to defeat 5-4 on penalties. Michu’s chance of playing in the Spanish top-flight was not to be denied, though; Rayo Vallecano came calling last summer after his contract with Celta expired and snapped him up on a Bosman.

Handed a role in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Michu was a sensation in his one and only season in La Liga. Despite their lowly league position, Vallecano racked up 53 goals – only six less than third placed Valencia – and their attacking approach helped Michu return 15 goals and three assists, making him the top scoring midfielder in Spain’s top division last time round.

The Prospects

Initially, many had expected De Guzman to slot into the attacking midfield position vacated by Gylfi Sigurdsson but Laudrup perhaps hinted at an alternative slot upon the player’s arrival when he stated the Dutch international could play in “anywhere in midfield”.

Michu, on the other hand, is a far more direct type of player and seems to be in the driving seat for the central role behind a lone striker as Laudrup goes about rebuilding his squad in light of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Although his ability to create opportunities for others isn’t quite up to Sigurdsson’s level, Michu is likely to offer a substantial goal threat for the Swans; standing 6 foot 1, he’s good in the air as well as on the ground and his strong work-ethic should also stand the Spaniard in good stead as he adjusts to the rigours of the Premier League.

With both player and manager experiencing the English top-flight for the first time, there’s some trepidation as to how quickly the Welsh club will settle under Laudrup but the Dane has already spelled out his intention to maintain the same shape and style of play from last term, suggesting the transition could well be seamless. Already, Michu is garnering plenty of attention, despite the fact he has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game; bearing in mind that De Guzman came in at 6.0, a similar cost looks on the cards, though. The Spaniard has been handed a 5.5 valuation in the Sky Sports game, offering us a viable mid-price Fantasy contender for the season ahead.

Casting an eye over the fixture list, Swansea have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any side. Over the first eight Gameweeks, they play at home five times – with (WHM, SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) all visiting the Liberty Stadium, in addition to trips to QPR, Villa and Stoke, some level of investment in Laudrup’s troops seems a sensible tactic. If Michu can settle quickly and replicate his Vallecano form, Swansea – and Fantasy managers – may well have found their Sigurdsson replacement for the season ahead.

Anyone want to have a guess at the City starting XI next season? I know its impossible to tell but just want to see what the general idea is. I would love:

Hart, Richards, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy, Yaya, Milner, Silva, Nasri, Tevez, Aguero.

For the life of me, I can't figure out what incriminating evidence the Milner possesses that would get him picked for teams like City and England.

I'm not having a go at you, I'm honestly wondering ... he seems so 'mid table' when I watch him. I can't believe that a team with City's money can't do better.

Perhaps I'm missing something that you could elaborate on? Honest question.

True, City could do better but his records have been consistent and impressive for the position he plays in. He gets plenty of assists each year. All depends on whether City want to play a defensive game or add attack by rotating Milner/Barry.

Even big teams need more than flash and flair. Milner is a solid, consistent performer. Reliable, you know exactly what you'll get from him (think balotelli opposite) won't set the world on fire but will do a job for you. With all the star power in city they really do need guys like milner who aren't too full of themselves and will work for the team

Yeah I have 3 expensive strikers so could upgrade if required.

If I dwongrade De Gea to Friedel (little difference IMO) I can upgrade Kagawa to Valencia/Nani. Not sure that's actually an upgrade though!

Not sure it is worth it.

It is an unpopular view point but I think it is best to load up on the attack. Naturally a must have expensive midfielder (last season - i.e. Silva) and cheap striker (last season i.e. Cisse) will appear. You will then have the cash to make the switch.

As I see it the top strikers are all likely to perform from the off whilst there are more question marks over the expensive midfielders.

I would prefer DDG/Kagawa to Friedel/Valencia or Nani.

Nice, so you concur with my starting approach?

I agree exactly with that - strikers more reliable from the start and the more money you have in fewer players the more flexibility you have to bargain-hunt later.

I'm almost sold on the 3 striker plan now.

I agree. My current team is....

                DDG/Federici
                Lescott/Kaboul/Wilson/McCartney/Mariappa
                Marin/Tarrabt/N'Zogbia/Noble/Sinclair
                Torres/Aguero/Rooney

I might bring Michu in for Sinclair and upgrade Noble.

Nice, liking the flair punts on Marin, N'Zogbia, and faith in Sinclair. You've made the mid pretty balanced by not going for Hazard, all 5 could deliver in their own ways with 2 penalty takers. On the other hand of course, all 5 could end up being anonymous 2/3-pointers.

The epic forward line, may, as we think, deliver the goods regardless.

That's the plan to be honest. A lot of people are lining up with 2 big midfielders and 3 very cheap midfielders with 2 heavy hitters and a cheap striker.

Our shape allows us to cover most people's heavy hitters i.e. Rooney & Aguero or Rooney or Aguero as well as having another heavy hitter i.e. Torres/Adebayor etc We should outscore the opposition players 8 times out of 10.

Onto midfield. Most people have 2 heavy hitters and 3 very cheap players. They should get 1 good return and maybe 2 small return eg an assist most weeks. A balanced 5 means that 2 might score well and 3 might do nothing. All in all similar returns.

And like I posted previously it is easier to swap a pricey striker for a pricey midfielder if needed than the other way around.

    Everton

Ars loose rvp and go crap, spurs fail badly under avb, Newcastle do ok as do Liverpool. But jelavic scores bundles and after a storming start for once everton finish 4th. Their 2nd half of previous seasons is top 3 or 4 I think. With a good start this is achievable. Jelavic a must IMO

Quick question - Does the m.fantasy.premierleague.com, give real time updates of someone else's scores? It will be much faster getting data from there.

So if I see http://m.fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/12345/history, will it work to see that week's live scores for that person?

So have you used the mobile version of the site to view your rival's live scores? I just used it to make a last-minute transfer, nothing more?

My idea is that when i get it (hopefully Wednesday) I was going to change my phone over to BT and that would then give me the connection i need via their wi-fi hotspots. it seems pretty good. my mate used that when we were up in the highlands in April Got connected no probs whereas the house we were in couldn't get wired broadband due to its location.

Oh yes it does. But it would only take about 20 minutes, top, to do it old school ... and then you could laminate it and post it up in your shower for your morning fixture analysis. Try doing that with your 4G iWhateveritis.

That's probably true. One for a rainy day. If only you'd suggested this at ANY OTHER TIME DURING THE SUMMER. (still might give it a try)

Although - BIGBOSSMAN - not exactly a ticker but I did just find this which probably works as a decent visual aid. Not that I've sat down and used it yet...

Reckon Evans could outs Ferdinand, as Fergie kind of hinted they would be 1st choice. "Cant guarantee 100% that Evans or Vidic will be fit to start the season" And Fergie loves Evans.

Also See Nani getting more than Young if he stays, lastly...

      Where RVP gonna play? 😀

That's not a hint ... Vidic and Evans are 'hurt' and are looking to be fit for the start. Rio is not hurt, and so is fit.

And Young > Nani, as SAF rates them, imo.

Young didnt play much last season, what makes you think things will change? Thats just your opinion... He played Evans over Ferdinand last year many times... Ferdinand im sure with his age and injury history will be a rotaion player.

Young was hurt. When healthy, he started over Nani. Same with Evans/Rio.

            True Story.

We'll see 😉 And yeah Young was out inj for a while. Also dont forget Fergie at one point last year when all 3 were fit... "Nani when he is in this kind of form is undroppable"

A lot of uncertainty with his future now, so lets see what happens.
Evans played a lot because of the injury crisis, but I have a strong feeling he will be above Ferdi in the pecking order. Fergie never dropped him, even when he had a few shocking games and Jones was fit at one point.

Lets just hope Utd win the title!

Good enough ... we'll see. I surely think Rio's on the phase-out and theoretically Evans is the most-likely to take over. That could continue to develop this year. Cheers.

    Gonna start with
    Silva Hazard Rooney Torres
Apart from Aguero i'll have all the most expensive players in the game. Silva and Rooney will be permanent. The other two can go out for anyone! I like this approach. Havin both Aguero and Rooney cripples the team as there are just 2 10+ options left in the game

      my MF+atack is

      Adebayor / Torres(will become Rooney in gw2) /Graham

nice.. If Rooney gets injured i'll get aguero and vice versa. so there's never too much value left on the bench. If i have both and one gets injured/goes off form i'll have to downgrade quite a lot. Either way, i love silva and think that he'll have a fantastic season. 1.5 cheaper than aguero and should get within touchin distance of him too

          yep

i aslo belive that aguero will share a lot of atacking returns with balotelli/Tevez/RVP

silva is the way to go in city atack

if you have silva over aguero it's easier to upgrade your team

    DDG - Federici

    Ivanovic - Lescott - Hangeland - Demel - Wilson

    Silva - Bale - Ramires - Maloney - Noble

    Torres - Bent - Pog

3m in the bank. 2m for Torres -> Rooney. Remaining 1m can be used to get rid of Pog (-> Graham/Petric), or Ramires -> Sess. Thoughts?
