We’re always happy to promote Ragabolly‘s LiveFPL site here at Fantasy Football Scout, with its excellent array of tools and visual summaries of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) chip usage and player ownership.

A regular look at the FPL managers out in front in the top 10,000 and those with strong track records has found a home on this site in recent years.

With the international break upon us and eight (or should that be seven) Gameweeks-worth of data and ranks under our belt, it’s time to once again assess how the front-runners, the historic high achievers and managers overall are set up.

CHIP USAGE

It seemed like every man and his dog was playing their Wildcard last week but in reality, less than 10% of the top 10k – and fewer than 7% of managers overall – hit ‘activate’ for Gameweek 8.

A lot of those currently in the top 10,000 won’t finish in such high positions, of course: while many FPL managers are yet to even burn a single chip, some of the front-runners have already cashed in their Wildcard, Triple Captain, Bench Boost and/or the Free Hit.

In fact, only 41.1% of the current top 10k have kept their powder completely dry.

Over 20% of the top 10,000 have already used two or more of their chips.

TEMPLATE WILDCARD SQUAD

 1

There was most definitely a ‘template’ Wildcard that existed in Gameweek 8, with managers in the top 10k and the overall FPL user base sharing 13 of the most-selected players.

‘Big at the back’ hasn’t completely gone but Liverpool representation has evaporated in the above squads, while there’s a return to the good old days of a three-man forward line.

Reece James (£6.0m), James Maddison (£7.9m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) were clearly investments for the medium-term and the favourable fixtures from Gameweeks 9-16 but there is still heavy reliance on Arsenal and Manchester City assets, despite their upcoming Gameweek 12 blank.

THE ‘LEGENDARY 1,000’

As for the managers with the best track records, there was considerable more Wildcard movement: a whopping 44% of these 1,000 historic greats activated it, scoring around seven more points in Gameweek 8 than the chip-less 55.6%.

A template ‘Wildcard’ squad isn’t available for these all-time high achievers but we can see who they’re favouring in general from the ownership list above.

15.7% have still hung on to Mohamed Salah (£12.9m), who is not listed above as his ‘effective ownership’ didn’t top 10% in Gameweek 8.

Just 5.2% had a tidy differential in Son Heung-min (£11.4m), meanwhile.

EFFECTIVE OWNERSHIP AT DIFFERENT RANK TIERS

 1

The above table shows how ownership of the key players differs (not too drastically) depending on your current rank tier.

You can get more relevant ownership/chip usage stats to your own current overall rank via the ‘local’ tab on LiveFPL.

        As first order of business!

    2. Maybe, but while the rule is there and everyone knows the consequences, nobody can complain if they then get booked for breaking that known rule. It's a bit like complaining about getting fined for doing 35 in a 30 limit.

With so many big hitters around now competing for our attention, is there an appetite to go for the second best alternative in the same side for a significantly cheaper price? Particularly when the likes of KDB and Son might not be completely immune to rotation. As an example I've punted on Bernardo and Kulusevski in my recent WC.

      Other cheaper options may include:

Mount (instead of Sterling) - new manager factor
      Eze (instead of Zaha)
      Diaz (instead of Salah)
      Soucek (instead of Bowen)

      1. The Knights Template
        • 12 Years

Diaz in mine team too. Mount was there but was politely asked to leave before security was called. There is a penguin here somewhere that knows a bit about Eze. Palace assets definitely on the radar.

If Eze was a better finisher he would be gold (PAlace fan here).

It is still Zaha for me though. Eze on all set pieces ATM (could change when Olise is more nailed)

Tak of Ayew taking up the Gallagher role (as he is much better at running with the ball, and pressing than Schlupp and Eze).

        Zaha is still the talisman

Guaita has stepped up a little since Sam Johnstone came in, so isn't 100% nailed

Doucoure in real life is gold but not an FPL asset. So i would only pick one of 1> Eze and 2 Olise moving forward until the WC.

Salah's ownership could probably be in the 20%'s by the time GW9 starts. I think you will be able to survive without him unless he is at 60 to 70% ownership again.

He will hardly be capped either. Feels weird not owning Mo but think this is the first season where you do not have to stress about owning him, well at this point.

I got him. With that fixture run he's bound to get something. 90min, pens, Bournemouth looking better(slightly) since Parker and it allows me to get zaha for dasilva next week. 5.7mil...can't go too far wrong with that

Agree. Anytime I see him plays it's just Bournemouth with 10 men back with him stood at the half way line. They give him the ball and expect him to take on the entire defence and score. X stats probably won't tell you that. Awful option imo

Scored a hatrick against worst team in the league and the worst GK in the league, wouldnt look into it too deep.

      Possibly neither.

I'd have a frontline of Haaland Mitrovic Toney on WC

I've loved having Kane all season. Seems to be a bit of a differential. I have KDB too at the mo. Can you fit them both in + Haaland?

    Ward
    TAA, Saliba, Cancelo
    Diaz, Martinelli, Foden, Andreas
    Kane, Haaland, Jesus

    Sanchez, Patterson, Gross, Neco

    2ft 1.4m itb

Sanchez & Gross to Iverson and Antony? Leave .5m itb and brings in a future superstar but leaves me with two dire keepers.

    That or something else?

I know the next week is ages away now but who would you start out of:

    A) Andreas vs Newcastle (H)
    B) Botman vs Fulham (A)
    C) Emerson vs Wolves (H)
    D) Bailey vs Leeds (A)

Morning all, appreciate any thoughts on next move here?

Really want Maddison but only way without a hit is to sell KDB.

    Pope
    Cancelo Trippier James
    KDB Martinelli Gordon Bailey
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

Iversen Andreas Dier Neco 1FT 0.9 ITB

Yes, starting to regret Kane on WC, it was 50/50 him or Isak, wish I’d done the latter with Maddison & Zaha.

KDB > Maddison or keep for 9-10?

Maddison is likely to get more minutes than KDB. That's the only selling point I can think of.

I'm keeping both but if I was to choose I'd say sell trent because they'll likely concede in 2 of the next 3

          Switched to Isak with 2FTs
          Already had Cancelo
If you have 1FT, and Cancelo, then wait for 2FTs maybe, and then get a mid assuming you already have 3 up front

I’ve sold both of them with the intention of getting Salah and Trent (maybe even Robbo) back in GW 12.
Can see both of them dropping further in price by then so could be a nice pickup with the fixture swing.
Need to see a bit more from them before investing in them again to be honest

    B) Sanchez (liv)

Very early tinkering. 1ft and 0.2itb. Saving seems like the most logical choice. Biggest question at the moment is if I should start Zouma over Trippier due to Newcastle double up against Mitro.

    Pope
    Cancelo James Trippier
    Bowen Maddison Zaha Martinelli
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

    Iversen; Zouma, Andreas, Neco

City's next two UCL games are vs Copenhagen and they have 2 wins from 2 already as well.

I can see them rotating quite a lot so KdB should in theory be a safe pick from here until the blank.

I'm tempted to do KdB > Salah this week but it requires a hit and with SOU in GW10 I'm finding it very hard to do.

I was hoping that City's European games could hint at a KdB benching but it really doesn't seem likely tbh. KdB will either play 70 mins in those UCL games against Copenhagen or be benched so he's fresh for the PL.

Yeah. Whether I Wildcard this IB depends on that move (did the reverse last week to bring in KDB for the blanks).

Otherwise I think I'll wait and see and use the FT to exchange a cheap defender (maybe Tarkowski v Saints or Fofana vs CPL).

Do we think Zaha is a better option over the next 5-6 games?

More proven than Martinelli in FPL, though which balances it out a bit I reckon.

Big shout out to Iwobi this morning. What a redemption arc that boy is having. Not much of an FPL prospect (albeit pretty decent stats) but absolutely loving his last 9 months in a Blue shirt.
