In the Meet the Manager series of videos and podcasts, Joe chats to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with an interesting story to tell or a strong track record in the game.

Jordie van der Laan ticks both boxes, as a ‘notorious’ former professional footballer, most notably in the Dutch leagues, and an excellent FPL manager.

Jordie (@Jocckie_FPL) is arguably best known at Fantasy Football Scout as the footballer who called in sick from training with his team, Dutch side Telstar, so he could see his former youth academy side PSV Eindhoven take on Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League.

He attended the match, in pitch-side seats, with our very own TopMarx. However, by half-time his phone was full of messages and texts as television cameras had picked up a beaming Jordie throughout the match. He’d been rumbled.

Telstar sacked Jordie for his front-seat faux pas and his story hit the headlines globally following the match in May 2019.

Even now he sees the funny side and Jordie soon found other clubs in the Netherlands and Australia, but sadly injury has blighted his career. He still plays in the Netherlands, now at an amateur level.

Aside from his troubles at Telstar, striker Jordie has been able to use his on-the-pitch knowledge to help his Fantasy career, which started a decade ago when he was a teenager.

By assessing the on-the-field prowess of players, such as Brentford’s Ivan Toney (£7.2m) recently, he is able to assess which Premier League stars can earn his team points in the long term.

It’s certainly paying off, with a 55th-place finish in 2016/17 as well as two other top 10K finishes since then and multiple other top 100k conclusions to a season.

During his chat with Joe, he discusses his career, ‘that Spurs game’, as well as his top tips for a strong FPL finish.

Joe and Jordie also look ahead to Gameweek 9 and beyond. With both managers Wildcarding the previous week, they are well set up for the coming Gameweeks. But there are some tricky fixtures to navigate in the future, with a blank for Manchester City and Arsenal on the horizon. Jordie reveals how he plans to tackle the upcoming Gameweeks ahead of the World Cup.

Watch Now

Joe’s thoughts

Jordie is now the second former professional footballer who also has a stellar track record in FPL that I’ve interviewed for this series.

Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Ukrainian footballer Vanya (@winter_2-close), who ended the season as the top manager in his country with his third top 5k finish.

These rare beasts, who can see first hand what is going through the minds of players and managers, can often use this knowledge to support their FPL decisions.

What is a striker really thinking if he’s in the middle of a goal drought? How patient are managers with a player out of form? The likes of Jordie and Vanya can offer that unique perspective to their fellow FPL managers.

Superb defending by Italy. They have the better defensive players.

These English youngsters are lacking in the final third. Kane can't score all the goals. They aren't ready.

    1. DARK SIDE OF THE LOON

Not even their first choice defenders!

    2. Deulofail

Take Kane off and they might have a chance of winning the ball further up the pitch as well as having more pace on the counter.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

Good grief, that might be the last thing I do. Kane is England's best player.

They have pace on the counter, as do Spurs. Kane is not the problem, he is one of the few shining lights.

        1. Deulofail
          • 9 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

I said *more* pace on the counter. If you watched this game in isolation without prior knowledge of the players, I very much doubt you would think Kane was a shining light. And I think that's the case quite often in England games.

        2. Lieutenant Frank Columbo
          • 13 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

Problem is he has to compensate for them all over the pitch instead of playing as an actual striker.

          1. Deulofail
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

He doesn't though. England have a load of quality technical players. If he needs to compensate for something, it must for things that result from mismanagement.

          2. Piggs Boson
            • 14 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

Yeah, I think the gaping hole in defence has a knock on effect.

England have to play 3 at the back or they risk getting smashed 4-0. That takes players away from the midfield and Kane has to drop more.

I wish England could play a 433 but they don't have the defenders for it.

This is pretty much my team and think it will be fairly popular WC selection. Nothing much wrong with it. Just that Solanke v Toney decision. My thought with Solanke is give him the next 4. If he blanks downgrade Maddison in a few weeks and upgrade him.

I want Trent and Salah in now. I don't want to think about how I might bring them in later. Salah could be captained in 9, 12, 13 and 14 so think he's worth a place.

Don’t be ridiculous. We had the easiest routes to at least two tournaments we’re ever gonna have, and we absolutely blew it. I’m convinced we’d have had silverware if we’d have had any other manager than Southgate in charge. All this rubbish about “he’s a good talker” etc is just completely irrelevant, he’s tactically inept and the sooner people realise he’s a terrible coach the better. Why throw away yet another opportunity for us to win something in the next tournament by keeping him in charge? Open your eyes, get rid of him now and replace him with somebody who not only can coach a team successfully, but also play some kind of football that’s not going to melt my eyeballs it’s so bland. He’s not successful, he’s been an absolute failure, and to be quite honest I’m angry you and everyone else don’t see that clear fact.

    Rather go Pickford and Bego.

It's so sad that a clown will ruin this great generation of England national team.

Can't believe almost whole nation supported him deceited by some luck in getting an opponent in knock out phases and FA gave him a new contract. I thought at least in England people know football.

Look in England we’re fed up of experts. We’re trying something different at the moment be it football, the economy or the NHS. Let’s just see how it plays out.

I'm not interested in international football as it became a nonsense long ago when players started getting picked for countries they didn't know existed only because their granny's cousin took a shite there once (was it Ireland who started it in the 90s??). As for Gareth Southgate I will say only this; he definitely comes across as a bit of a fanny but he'll be hard to displace as he's soooo nice.

Great generation? What is it with English football fans forgetting that other teams exist, our best player is Harry Kane who isn’t even in the top 3 of his position in the world, our keepers and defence bang average premier league level and now world class midfielder. We had better players under Sven but a worse team.

We hugely outperformed under Southgate getting to two of our five semi finals in our history , two of five and you don’t rate him!

He wouldn’t get a top 4 premier league job but but international football is different and he’s done great and so long as we get out the group (which is much easier than the NL group) he should stay in role.

        I'm from Serbia, mate.

Based on names only, England is in top 5 national teams right now. You can't tell me this team can't beat anyone with right managing:

        Pickford
        Walker Dier Stones
        James Belingham Rice Chillwell
        Maddison/Mount
        Foden Kane

Any thoughts on Tavernier as a cheap option to tap into Bournemouths good fixtures?

Kinda leaning towards keeping Jesus and selling Martinelli. So it would be Tavernier and Jesus or Martinelli and Solanke.

I’d certainly prefer that to Solanke in mine team. That would be a big mistake. But I’m not even remotely interested in Bournemouth. Maybe when I retire.

Fair call. I don’t expect to own a Bournemouth player for long, but just need a cheapish player for a few weeks so works well for me. Keeping Jesus for now also allows me to get Mitro in a couple weeks rather than being stuck with Solanke.

Wildcarding in GW13 to jump off whoever I choose anyway.

What's your honest prediction for the next 4 Bournemouth games? I know they look 'decent fixtures' on paper but do you really see them winning any, or even just opening up & starting to create some chances?

      1. Jackie Moon
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

I don’t know how many they’ll win, but I do feel they have to score some goals in these games. Even just 2 attacking returns over 4 games would suit me fine for a cheap player.

Fair enough, I guess that's realistic. I just think these fixtures are tougher than they look & expect something like:
          BOU 0-2 BRE
          BOU 1-3 LEI
          FUL 2-0 BOU
          BOU 1-1 SOU

As an England fan, that was a fantastic result tonight (would have preferred 0-4 but will take 0-1). Too late for the World Cup but when he is sacked in January we can rebuild with a proper manger (Southgate will continue to be a lovely person btw)

I think only benefit of WCing during IB is more time to tinker and deal with international injuries (if any...)

              Catching price changes is history.

Don't think you can make big money anymore, but can make early moves in safety and squeeze out a little extra. Better than panic WC an hour before deadline.

If you want someone to be injured all you have to do is ask me to put them in my side in the international break. All transfer planning in GW8 has gone right out of the window. I thought I dodged a bullet with Patterson, Digne and Isak all getting points last week. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? (lol)
