Frank Lampard and John Terry are amongst the goals as Chelsea slip to a last-ditch defeat at the hands of MLS All Stars. Shinji Kagawa opens his United account after some good work by Bebe, Ricardo Vaz Te bags a double for West Ham, West Brom hit Copenhagen for three, while Liverpool slip to defeat against Roma:

MLS All Stars 3 Chelsea 2
Roberto Di Matteo fielded a strong starting XI for the game against MLS All Stars earlier this morning. Branislav Ivanovic started at right-back, with Gary Cahill partnering John Terry at centre-half, while in midfield, Frank Lampard sat in the double-pivot and Ramires was handed an attacking role on the right flank, with Romelu Lukaku the lone striker in the 4-2-3-1. After falling behind in the first-half, the Blues equaliser came from a familiar route, as Terry rose to nod home a Lampard corner and leave the match all-square at half-time. Di Matteo made four changes at the break, with Marko Marin’s creativity continuing to carve open the hosts’ defence without any reward. The Premier League side eventually took the lead through Lampard after sub keeper Dan Kennedy had misjudged a Ramires cross but another host of changes cost Chelsea – their rhythm disrupted, the Blues conceded twice to fall to an unexpected defeat. Di Matteo admitted post-match that although his tinkering perhaps led to the loss, the main issue was to give plenty players game time under their belt.

We’re disappointed with the result, we are always looking to win and we were a little bit stretched in the second half. I made some changes and the team was maybe not as together as in the first half….We have to look to improve the way we play a little bit but I was happy with the play in the first half and it was a good test for us. We need to help our striker a little bit more for sure, he needs more support and we need more penetration, but that will come. We have players who have only trained for five, seven or 10 days, so we weren’t expecting to be sharp but we are working towards our first league game which is important for us.

Chelsea Starting XI: Hilario (Turnbull 46); Ivanovic, Cahill (Chalobah 74), Terry (David Luiz 46), Cole (Ferreira 46; Essien (Mikel 60), Lampard (Meireles 60); Ramires (Hazard 60), Marin (Piazon 60), Benayoun (Malouda 46); Lukaku (De Bruyne 74).

Shanghai Shenhua 0 Man United 1
Sir Alex Ferguson handed Michael Carrick a role alongside Rio Ferdinand in the heart of the back-four, with United’s central defensive options currently stretched to the limit. Antonio Valencia and Davide Petrucci were given the wing roles, while Shinji Kagawa one again operated in “the hole”, with Federico Macheda the lone forward. New signing Nick Powell also started and should have given his side the lead but fluffed his lines when put through by Petrucci midway through the first-half – in a game affected by heat and humidity and their opponents’ willingness to sit deep and break on the counter, this was United’s only real chance prior to the break.

Ferguson made a trio of changes at half-time and once more it was the introduction of Bebe that made the difference. Having scored in the previous match against Ajax Cape Town, the winger was described as the “star of the second half” by the club’s official website after bedazzling the hosts with his trickery on the left. Not only did he lay on the only goal of the game for Kagawa, Bebe also went close on a couple of occasions and, with the Japanese playmaker also impressing, United were unlucky not to extend their lead – due to an inability to finish off their chances, Ferguson’s side instead had to settle for a slender 1-0 win.

United Starting XI: Lindegaard (Johnstone 46); Veseli (Vermijl 71), Carrick, Ferdinand, Brady; Valencia (Lingard 71), Powell (Tunnicliffe 46), Anderson (Scholes 71), Petrucci (Bebe 46); Kagawa, Macheda (Hernandez 60)

Rot-Weiss Erfurt 0 West Ham 3
Sam Allardyce started the game with three triallists in the Hammers XI; defensive midfielder Bilel Mohsni, right-back Michael Lamey and Colin Kazim-Richards (playing centrally in a front three) were all afforded a chance to impress. The first-half ended goalless and was a bit of a non-event from an attacking perspective for the Premier League side – indeed, if it wasn’t for the heroics of summer signing Stephen Henderson in goal, they could easily have gone in behind. After a couple of changes at the break, the visitors quickly went ahead – Kazim Richards’ cross was diverted his own net by Erfurt’s Phil Ofosu-Ayeh as West Ham stepped up the pace.

Sam Baldock – on as a sub at half-time – lasted just 15 minutes before making way for Ricardo Vaz Te, with the former still not over the effects of a recent illness. Vaz Te needed just two minutes before finding the net after good work by Blair Turgott and the forward notched again on 77 minutes – Nicky Maynard was the provider this time. Henderson continued to defy the home side and racked up a clean sheet thanks to a string of second-half saves; his display over the 90 minutes was afforded plenty praise by the club’s official website and suggests Jussi Jaskelainen may not have it all his own way next season.

West Ham Starting XI: Henderson, Lamey (Driver 46), O’Brien (Baldock 46, Vaz Te 61), Spence, Potts, Mohsni, Moncur, Hall, Turgott, Maynard (Taylor 78), Kazim-Richards

Copenhgen 0 West Brom 3
Steve Clarke rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for West Brom’s game in Denmark last night, with Peter Odemwingie and Jerome Thomas on the flanks and Marc-Antoine Fortune through the middle up front. Despite his wide role, Odemwingie was an immediate threat to the hosts – he was inches away from connecting with a Fortune cut back with just over a minute on the clock and continued to show menace, letting fly with a 30-yard effort soon after. It was no surprise to see Odemwingie involved in his side’s opener; a foul on the Nigerian allowed Steven Reid the chance to fire home a superb free-kick from outside the box to give Clarke’s side the lead. Jonas Olsson, Shane Long and Simon Cox were all afforded their first game time since Euro 2012; the trio were handed 45 minutes apiece, with the latter two on as second-half subs. Cox almost added to his side’s lead on a couple of occasions but it was Long who eventually notched the second from the spot after being brought down in the box. Reid was denied another wonder free-kick thanks to a superb stop by the opposition keeper before Gabrial Tamas (on as a sub for Olsson at the break) added a third late on.

West Brom Starting XI: Daniels; Reid, McAuley, Olsson (Tamas 46), Ridgewell; Mulumbu (Gera71), Morrison (Thorne 62), Dorrans (Mantom 62); Odemwingie (El Ghanassy 71), Fortune (Long 46), Thomas (Cox 46)

Liverpool 1 Roma 2
Brendan Rodgers handed Raheem Sterling a place in his first XI for last night’s match at Fenway Park. The likes of Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani also featured from the off, with the latter handed a role as the most advanced central midfielder and Sterling almost gave his side the lead early on after some good work by Cole. Liverpool’s midfield caused the Italians plenty problems in the first 45; Jonjo Shelvey and Cole both had a couple of efforts, while Nathan Eccleston also went close, but the Roma keeper was in fine form and ensured the teams went in goalless at the break.

Rodgers made seven changes at the break but Liverpool continued to create chances without finding the net; Shelvey went close with a free-kick and sub Suso should have netted as Roma made the Mersyesiders pay with two decisive finishes. Charlie Adam grabbed a consolation with 10 minutes remaining but Roma held out for the win.

Liverpool Starting XI: Gulacsi; McLaughlin, Skrtel, Carragher, Enrique; Spearing, Shelvey, Aquilani; Cole, Sterling, Eccleston.
Second Half Subs: Adam, Agger, Flanagan, Jones, Morgan, Pacheco, Suso.

Why? As long as he is taking corners, free kicks and pens he will always stand a chance of scoring well.

He don't need to be running into the box 100 times a game, he just needs someone to get on the end of a corner or free kick and chip in with the odd goal here and there and he's repaid your faith.

A goal (penalty), an assist, a clean sheet and a couple of boni from the double gives you 2 x 15 pts to kick off your season. Seems like a good idea to me!

Chelsea have bought a lot of new, young, untested in the PL players, I would be very surprised if they threw them all in, it will be too much of a transition, Di Matteo will need Lampard and terry in there to guide them.

Its seems to me unlikely that Southampton will play lambert and him every week, they'll be forced to be more defensive in my option, than they were in the championship.

However my point is, you could afford to wait to see if he starts first few games if you went with Pog for gw1?

I know Pog plays twice that week, but his goal ratio isnt that impressive.

People always make the mistake of assuming a DGW player will do better than a player playing once.

He plays against Chelsea, so he could easily get 4 points that week, maybe less, as the manager may have to show some loyalty to the strikers that got them promotion.

Here’s my squad and reasoning behind decisions!

GK: De Gea – Nearest thing to guaranteed starter in United’s back 5 and I want United defence cover
GK: Federici – Initial double gameweek. First 6 weeks rotate well with United. Guaranteed starter. Should get save points if not clean sheets

DEF: Cole – I’ve had him every year. Want Chelsea defense cover. Has never let me down
DEF: Lescott – Should be guaranteed starter unless Mancini invests in another CB. Pops up with some goals. Completes my strategy of getting United/City/Chelsea defense cover
DEF: Clark – Loving Villa’s start to the season. A risk he won’t start but I think he will. If not CB with Dunne then OOP as holding midfielder
DEF: McCartney – West Ham have a dream first 6 games. Despite what some people here think, I reckon he’s nailed on starter at LB. Good crosser could lead to assists
DEF: Wilson – Stoke rotate well with West Ham (full season). Nailed on LB starter. Possibility of moving OOB CM later in the year if there are injuries. To rotate with McCartney.

MID: Noble – See McCartney. Nailed on for set pieces and penos. Turned off by Nolan’s yellow card record
MID: Guthrie – Double gameweek to start. Back up midfielder with hopefully guaranteed starts if needed
MID: Larsson – Tough opener away to Arsenal but nice run of games then. Sessengnon too dear this year. Larsson should have control of set pieces too
MID: Pienaar – If moving to Everton on time. Decent run of games after United opener. Should fill the spot left by Cahill hopefully
MID: Walcott – Sun and Sou first 2 home games are the kind of opportunities for Walcott to get those explosive double pointers he’s capable of. Cash in the bank to upgrade to Silva after GW4 if he’s back fit from Olympics

STR: Torres – Only striker available for Chelsea. Double gameweek plus nice run of games up to week 5. Worth the gamble to begin the season with. Captain week 1
STR: Rooney – Only United attacker guaranteed a start. On penalties. Dream GW2-4 to takeover captaincy (RVP arriving might change things)
STR: Bent – Lovely run of fixtures for Villa and Bent to go on scoring spree hopefully. Especially the home games.

Strategy covers the big 3 defensively, 1 main midfielder (Walcott/Silva) & 2 big hitters up front to cover captaincy. My main worry is no Spurs cover currently with weeks 2-5 looking very appealing. I’ll probably bring in Dawson/Kaboul for Wilson dpending on GW1.

Like I said worth monitoring. If he starts when Big Sam plays his first choice guys we may have a bargain on our hands, and I will go to Hammers/Stoke rotation. 8.5 for keepers leaves so much spare cash.

who are the best cheapies this year?
i mean bottom price in their position and or close to it.
so far for defense i've got
    Clynne, Demel
considering Gorkss, McCartney, Barnett, Stam also Ness from stoke is a midfielder but is listed as a defender @ only 4mil
and at 4.5 Fabio looks decent as does Cuellar

    Mids
at 4.5 i've got Britton though i'm not sure with all of swansea's signings.
    looking at
    Guthrie, El Ahmadi, Frei, Puncheon

    FWDs
    at 4.5

Has anyone retrospectively looked back at last season to see if cheap GK rotation works?

I understand the cheap gk rotation:

    - historically there's always cheap gks who score nearly as many points as ones who are alot more expensive

    - pick two cheapies and rotate (normally play whos at home)

    - then, in theory, total points scored should be more points and better value.

BUT, does this actually end up happening (or are cheap keepers picking up points where you wouldn't play them)?

Yes. Isacki posted about it yesterday. New/Sun rotation gave 16 clean sheets as opposed to City's 17. Considering New/Sun was a helluva lot cheaper, it won by miles.

Yup. New/Sun at home gave 16. I think it would be higher if you looked at fixtures when they play a big team at home and the other has a weaker team away. Rotation ftw.

Its a bit risky I understand, but thats what fantasy is all about making predictions on the outcomes in the epl and basing your team around those outcomes. If your predictions fail your team fails, if your right you get a big rewards.

Fair enough, their early fixtures are good. Personally, i'd rather have a Swansea attacking player in those matches and spread the risk defensively. I prefer to play the odds more than take a gamble.

Man Utd suddenly realise that not EVEN the Americans can be conned into buying a completely crap deal?

    Mingolet/Green a good rotation?
Sunderland solid at home under MON. QPR could be this year's swansea defensively.

Big Sam started his reserves last night. If Henderson starts when he plays his first choice guys he may be worth it. Henderson and bego for 8.5 could be gold.

Morning people. So after the signature of Oscar, I am not too sure that any Chelsea mid is guaranteed to start both the games.Who are people getting for Chelsea's DGW?

Marin is very risky, don't you think? Mata too said that him playing in Olympics won't affect him for the start of the season. He may play one but not both IMO.

      Cole,Hazard,Torres

Hazard cause he cost 9.5M and it would be easy to get rid of him

aslo he can play at Torres role (if Torres fail to deliver AGAIN)

I have Hazard for now, but I am thinking of taking him out for Dempsey/Bale. He wasn't that good for the limited time he played yesterday and he is unproven in the PL too.

Any Reading fans on this board?

It's hard to gauge their likely starting line-up, with or without current injury concerns.

All I know about Reading FC is it's built on an old rubbish tip.

Suprised I'm not seeing more Mignolet Foster combos.

They come out cheaper than having de Gea who is going to have a depleted defence in front of him, they both have excellent home cs records and rotate well..

I had the combo at one point. But I currently have Cuellar at the back as he's a little cheaper, but I do like that combo.

Same - I ended up going for Foster/Begovic with Cuellar for SUN cover. Could still be tempted to go back though!

Think Cuellar has a lot to do with that. Im looking for a good 4.5 rotater with Ming, reckon a 5/5 rotation isnt worth it may as well get DDG/4.5 for 0.5 more.

Anyone got an idea as to Arsenal's starting backline? Perhaps:

    Jenkinson - Verm - Koscielny - Gibbs ??

Is Djourou the other option at RB?

Yes, except Koscielny will probably play to the right of Vermaelen.

If Jenkinson doesn't play, Coquelin will probably play there out of position, as Djourou is far more comfortable at CB, and Coquelin is just better than him at RB.

I doubt that Coquelin will play there ahead of Jenkinson though. Jenkinson has improved a lot defensively over the course of last season and is a consummate crosser on the ball, which counts more now that we have Giroud.

Ok, I've decided on my squad (for the 99th time). I want silva but need to field a 4.5 striker - is Sammon the best option?

    Thoughts?
