Erling Haaland (£12.1m) returns to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) captaincy conversation in Gameweek 13, but the decision over who to hand the armband to isn’t entirely clear-cut with a range of options from Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal rivalling the Norwegian.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Erling Haaland dominates the captain poll, with almost two-thirds of the total votes cast by users at the time of writing.

No other player has garnered more than 21% of votes at this stage, with Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) currently in second place, backed by around one in five of our users.

Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) occupies third place with a little under 4% of the vote, followed by Kevin De Bruyne (£12.3m) a mite further back.

THE MAIN CANDIDATES

ERLING HAALAND/PHIL FODEN

Erling Haaland makes a welcome return to the captaincy debate following Manchester City’s Blank Gameweek 12, in which a host of alternative options failed their armband auditions.

The status quo remains for the best fantasy asset in the division – and Erling Haaland continues to produce gold-standard numbers.

The Norwegian leads the division for shots inside the box (24), big chances (eight), and shots on target (16) over the last six matches.

The all-important expected data confirms Haaland’s dominance, ranking best for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI) over the last six matches, with 4.90 and 6.14 respectively.

A screenshot of a computer Description automatically generated

Above: Erling Haaland leads the division for shots inside the box (24), big chances (8), and shots on target (16) over the last six matches

Phil Foden (£8.3m) has been snapped up by 300,000+ FPL managers before Manchester City host Brighton in a hugely enticing home fixture, the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 13.

Foden has scored six goals and supplied four assists this season and, except for his strike against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 8, all his returns have arrived at the Etihad Stadium.

While understandably Erling Haaland sets the pace as far as City’s underlying goal threat numbers are concerned, Foden is no slouch.

Among City teammates over the last six matches, Foden plays understudy to only Haaland for shots inside the box (13), big chances (three), and shots on target (nine).

Guardiola’s charges host De Zerbi’s Brighton in Gameweek 13, with the match of playstyles suggesting an open high scoring encounter.

Analysing the Seagulls at a team level, over the last six matches Brighton have registered a single clean sheet, against Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 12.

However, the underlying defensive numbers for Brighton remain strong: the Seagulls rank in the top four over the last six matches for shots on target against (19) and expected goals conceded (xGC), with 5.98.

Stil have WC and 1FT. But maybe GTG?

    Raya (Ward)
    VVD Tripp Cresswell Saliba (N.Will)
    Salah Martinelli Zaha (Andreas, Jensen)
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

    Only one ManC asset...

Got to be honest...cresswell is a weird one. West ham cant keep clean sheets and he's had zero attacking returns.

      Is N. Williams fixed?

Need more city. I would get foden in.

Jea, thats the reason im asking. At the same time theres no better moment to give Cresswell a chance.

I am worried about ManC assets, but 50/60 Pep will roulette and maybe Foden is benched...

Tbf, West ham are quite good defensively. But they tend to let one in each game, so i can ser your point.
Cressy are fairly attacking and at 4.8 its ok IMO.

Maybe in some situations u need Saliba, Saka, Martinelli, Jesus, Ramstale which are better options than White. Also there more 4.5m decent defenders.

Arteta is always awful at being clear and 'honest' in press conferences.

I doubt we will get anything that gives proper confirmation either way.

Strange how tro persons can have the exact opposite view on the same tving. Arteta usually prerty easy and straightforward to interprete. But if you are exoecting this player plays or not play, then he is not your kind of guy, but not everyone is Bielsa. Howe is much worse for example.

Should be fine. I think the next stage in Saka's development is to stop being a wuss honestly and Arteta knows this. He needs to toughen up, something that we have seen from Martinelli and is paying dividends. If Saka can become stronger, deal with minor knocks, learn to stay up/ride challenges etc. - it will be difference between him being merely good, and world class.

I am still going Foden this week and Saka next though 🙂

Coufal to Gabriel for a hit? Already done Trossard to Foden.

Other defenders are Cancelo, Trippier, Doherty and Williams. Can’t see Doherty starting and Williams probably good for a point at best. Coufal may get rotated in but West Ham forums seem to favour him not starting.

Lets try and get a debate going:

So with Haaland in everyone's team, which other 2 strikers to pair with him for the next 4 GW's?

Seems like far too much choice at the moment (% ownership)
Darwin 7% - great fixtures and form and teammates injured so should be front and centre literally, differential too.
Kane 23% - good form, but never more than 1 goal a match so far - might take it easy in WC run up to avoid injury, expensive
MItro 25% - Mr Consistent this season, relatively cheap still
Jesus 60% - think he can be "covered" by having Saka and Martinelli
Toney 27% - Also Mr Consistent and on penalties.
Solanke 4% - form, differential and cheap if you need funds elsewhere.
Scamacca 2% - cheap, couple of goals couple of GW's ago. meh.

The reality is they're all decent options.

      Buy
      - Darwin worth punt with stats.
      - Kane consistent, but expensive
      - Mitro & Toney, both great
      - Scamacca has potential...

      Avoid
      - Solabe, unless mostly bench
      - Jesus as 4YC, can get Saka

If the money wouldnt be the issue Darwin&Kane
Toney has awesome fixtures. Mitro cheap and will score fixtureproof so long term him.

Toney&Darwin ultimate choice for next 4

Scamacca deserves way more than meh. He has BOU CRY and LEI as 3 of his next 4 all at home and West Ham's offensive stats since the fixture turn that has seen Bowen get a ton of points has really shot up.

I'm eyeing Mitro > Scamacca in 15 personally. But yeah probably not deserving of a striker slot just now.

Currently on Darwin & Mitrovic. If I had an extra FT I might actually look to move Mitro on now as his fixtures aren't as good as others. The Darwin/Firmino double up is appealing but the latter might he benched this week. Currently not too sure which way I'll go in GW14 - maybe hop on Jesus for Forest (triple up with Saka & Martinelli) then Scamacca/Firmino/Kane for 15-16

I think if you got Mitro he is fine. For me, who needs to to Foden from Trossy, i nerd 0.3 and i get that by going Toney to 6.9. Scammaca for me, because i like West ham fixtures better than Fulham and i gamble on him being on pens. 6 out of 6 in Italy.
Mitro Nice next 2, then double Manchester. At 2.8 something million in rank i will try to differ from all those Mitro owners.

De Zerbi reminds me of Nibbler from Futurama.

Neale, why does de Zerbi always get the 830 shift? I can barely string a sentence together at that time let alone deliver a press conf. Does he get a say in what time it happens?

I'm the same. It must be on his insistence as Potter was always around lunchtime!

      A) Play Perisic (Webster as cover on bench if he doesn’t play)
      B) Perisic to Robbo (-4)
      C) Webster to Gabriel (-4)?

Gerrard being seen partying with Irish drug kingpins in marbella probably wasnt the wisest move on his part.

Why has Jesus become unpopular? Purely because he is one card away from a ban?

Speaking personally, as well as the 4YCs, there are a lot of other options, and I’m not sure Arsenal will find Southampton an easy match. Definitely on the radar though.

Aha didn't know he was close to ban, that might sway it for Firmino. But I agree with you, still think he's decent and can get some hauls.

Firmino’s stats look good, close to Jesus and Nunes. I’m contemplating him instead of Nunes to avoid a hit.

Do we expect Nunez to get longer on the pitch until the World Cup

Only taking this from Twitter but apparently he was very fit and a consistent starter at Benfica. Not sure about Firmino’s fitness but feel that Klopp is sticking to the same team as much as possible to maintain recent form and subbing early to maintain fitness

      A) Toney with his 4 YCs
      Or
      B) Firmino?

Already got Salah in the team.

Wait for press conference to see if Darwin plays or not as it could effect Firmino. If he plays, for this week only I'd definitely get him. It should be a massacre.

On WC essentially its between dropping Mitro for a fodder forward if so who?
Or dropping Rashford for a Almiron to go on bench and having Jesus CF?
      Please help

Depends on budget, but Eduoard at Palace at 5.3 is a decent one. Daka at 5.7 the most explosive one but shares gametime with oldVardy. Solanke 5.8 but awful fixtures, pens though.
