Having rolled out a series of articles on the promoted sides, we now focus on the main protagonists from each of the three clubs in terms of likely Fantasy impact. First up, then, we take a look at the top scorer in last season’s npower Championship, Southampton’s Rickie Lambert:

With a total of 85 goals, Nigel Adkins’ runners-up found the net more times than any other side in the Championship in 2011/12 and a look at the stats shows just how crucial Lambert is to the team’s attacking potential. Aided by penalty duties and his fair share of direct free-kicks, the 6 foot 2 forward racked up 27 goals last term; supplementing this with 14 assists, Lambert played a part on 41 (or 48%) of the Saints’ goals – double the ratio of next best Adam Lallana, whose 11 goals and 10 assists equate to 24%.

The Statistics

It’s fair to say Lambert has led a somewhat nomadic existence amongst the lower leagues. He began his career as a 16-year-old at Blackpool in 1998 but after just three sub appearances, was released by then-manager Steve McMahon in 2000. The forward remained without a club for four months before Macclesfield Town rescued him from obscurity and, after notching eight goals in 44 league matches, was snapped up by Stockport County ahead of the 2002-03 campaign. Lambert netted just 18 times in 98 league appearances, however, and was shipped off to Rochdale midway through the 2004-05 campaign – his one full season there saw him find the net 22 times in 46 league games before Bristol Rovers came calling on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2006.

A modest first couple of seasons produced just 21 goals from 82 league matches before Lambert set the tone for what has subsequently followed. The 2008-09 campaign harvested 29 goals in 45 appearances as Lambert finally found his feet; finishing joint-top scorer in League One, his displays afforded him a place in the division’s Team of the Year and, after scoring in the opening day of the following campaign, he was snapped up by Southampton in a deal thought to be in excess of £1m.

Under the guidance of Nigel Adkins, Lambert has gone from strength to strength, returning double figures for goals and assists in each of his three seasons at St Mary’s. In 2009/10, he produced 29 goals and 13 assists in 45 league games – combined with his goal for Bristol Rovers in the first match of the campaign, he was the top scorer across all four divisions in England for the second successive season and was also voted PFA Fans’ Player of the Year for League One. Since then, his performances have helped the club record back-to-back promotions; 21 goals and 13 assists in 2010/11 elevated them into the Championship, where last season’s above-mentioned displays earned Lambert the division’s Player of the Year accolade, in addition to being voted the Southampton Fans’ Player of the Season for the second time since arriving at the club.

The Prospects

Priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.8 in the Sky Sports game, Lambert is an intriguing mid-price option for Fantasy managers to consider for the season ahead. While the Saints striker is yet unproven in the top-flight, Norwich’s Grant Holt demonstrated last season that the step up in class can be seamlessly achieved; the Canaries skipper was joint sixth top scoring forward in FPL, accruing 138 points thanks to 15 goals, three assists and 19 bonus points.

Adkins’ approach is key to Southampton’s Fantasy potential next season. Last term, Swansea’s propensity for picking up clean sheets was mainly down to Brendan Rodgers’ refusal to alter his possession-based game after his club’s play-off promotion, while Norwich benefitted from Paul Lambert’s attack-minded philosophy and racked up 52 goals; the seventh best tally in the Premier League.

The Saints’ default 4-4-2 formation has been fundamental to their success under Adkins but the past couple of pre-season friendlies have seen him trial a 4-3-2-1 formation; perhaps there are lessons to be learned from Norwich’s failure to pick up a single clean sheet away from home last season. It could well be that the Saints will rein in their gung-ho approach on the road and hand Lambert a lone striker role, with 4-4-2 rolled out for their matches at St Mary’s but, at present, it’s too early to come to any conclusions.

Certainly, if Southampton are to flourish in the upcoming campaign, Lambert’s potency will be key. The first four Gameweeks (mci, WIG, MUN, ars) provides them with just one good fixture and hands them a schedule which will be enough to deter even the most optimistic of Fantasy managers. On the positive side, though, the trips to City and Arsenal could afford us a window into Adkins’ thoughts on away tactics for the season ahead, allowing us to begin the campaign with alternative mid-price candidates before we consider throwing some investment Lambert’s way.

Not necessarily. It depends on how well you expect QPR to be overall. If you think they'll struggle then yes, but if you think they can do as well as Sunderland/Fulham/Similar then no.

Personally, I think there's better value elsewhere.

Yup.. same. But you can do a lot with the extra £2.5m.

I'm gonna do it I think.. he ended the season that way, I think its fair to expect him to at least to continue initially.

As I understand it conventional wisdom says he'll be rotated with Balotelli - while Aguero remains 'nailed on'.

The understanding between Tevez and Aguero when they played together might suggest they should both automatically start - but equally, Mancini hates Tevez doesn't he?

You'd think it'd count against him that's for sure. But as long as they perform up front I expect they'll continue together as you say.

I'm pretty convinced its worth it now; just get ready to be shot if he puts in a few bad performances.

Tevez and bad performances dont go together. If anything Aguero will be rotated with Balotelli when the CL kicks in - Tevez has awesome stamina and can play 3 games a week without performance levels dropping. Tevez ftw!

True. I am looking at it now! Could be a nice make-weight for Suarez who I am keen on for the season but perhaps not right from the off.

Getting ready to be shot would involve having one of Silva/Nasri/Yaya in midfield I suspect. Or the cash to upgrade to Aguero. Or sideways shift to Balotelli!

If you don't have one of those in place and City are firing (without Tevez) then it's hits to bring some cover in.

At the moment I have Silva so this is working out OK...!

Tevez AND Suarez?!! That's a 'nice guy' front line if I saw one.

All you need then is Lee Barnard. And perhaps keep some powder dry from Joey Barton to play in the hole later on in the season

atm he's nailed on, but Kolo is unhappy and likely to leave, Savic is awful. No way Mancini will go in with Kompany and Lescott as his only senior cbs. Whoever comes in is not come in to sit on the bench, and they sure as heck aren't gonna challenge Kompany. Lescott will therefore be a rotation risk.

        My thoughts exactly, milord.

If Bale injures a cruciate ligament in the first game (wouldn't that be ironic after feigning injury to avoid the olympics), then you'll need to transfer him out immediately or his price will fall off a cliff.

I just get nervous about every second poster here saying that they'll have him for the DGW and then will swap him for Rooney the very next game. His price may never recover, and I could be stuck with a team worth less than 100.

you'll hate your 3 4.0 defenders once the season starts.. Also if Kagawa/Bale etc do well you'll be able to get just one. ALSO.. if Graham/Holt/Ba look brilliant you'll have to downgrade one of your strikers to them leavin lots of wasted value in your bank. Just saying

Yeah but the 3 4.0 defenders rotate quite well.. I'll see how Hazard vs Kagawa vs Bale starts to pan out and then go for the one who is doing the best.. Always have the option of downgrading one of my strikers to Bent/ Suarez or even Tevez and upgrade the midfield or defence

Quick heads up - I know Frei has been getting a fair bit of love, some people suggesting he'll get a lot of starts if Dempsey leaves. Personally think Kacaniklic (who's signed a new contract for us today) will get just as many and also there's Ruiz, Rodallega (if deployed as a winger), Davies & Duff to compete with so personally wouldn't go there just yet, even for 4.5

Agree, Kacaniklic has been getting more starts in friendlies I believe. There are too many options in the Fulham midfield and attack, and a whole bunch of players who can't decide if they're midfielders or strikers (Dembele, Ruiz...)

I always thought Rodallega was a striker and thus would diminish Petric's goal threat. Is he not going to?

I would expect him to play as a striker, especially if we go 4-4-2. If Jol fancies a bit of 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 then maybe as a winger. Hard to tell if he's ahead of or behind Petric as he wasn't able to go on the pre-season tour due to his work permit.

Think Kaca & Frei will be behind Dempsey & Ruiz and on a par with/slightly behind Duff but will get more opportunities as the season progresses.

The reason I have Michu is this

        1) I have Bent up front

        2) Think Swans coverage is needed for the first 8, but will Dyer be prolfic enough?

        3) After those 8 fixtures, if he has done well his price should have risen and he will be easy to move out for McClean, Pienaar etc.

OK, so you've gone for Bent (over Graham I suppose, as your alternative Swans coverage) and are getting Michu in over Dyer. And hoping to make a profit on him.

All sounds reasonable enough, it doesn't work out for me though as I can't squeeze in a 6.5 midfielder with my Aguero/Rooney/Torres strikeforce. The only big-ish mids I have are Kagawa and Ramires with Taarabt the next most expensive. Downgrading Ramires to Michu will leave it looking rather weak.

You could downgrade Torres to Adebayor and then upgrade Taarabt to Michu.

I'm a bit wary about Torres. People are piling into him for the DGW and they plan to dump him in GW2. It could be like short selling in the stock market.

A lot of us yes, but FPL in general? Not so sure. We're just a drop in the ocean, we wouldn't bring him anywhere near a drop ourselves.

Would want to start with Torres over Ade for the DGW reason we're all familiar with... perhaps Michu can come in a little later after I downgrade Torres to Ade?

Ramires can also be swapped for a McClean/Pienaar type leaving a bit of spare cash to maybe get a 4.5 defender over Demel/Clyne.
